The 85 1.8 is a great lens. Hard to justify spending big money on the f1.2L version when this lens is more than capable of producing stunning imagery. If I could do it all over again, I would not have sold the trinity. If you have the means, get the 135L and don't look back.
Lovely shot LM, a good job on what looks like some very varied lighting.
Lots of big windows with natural light coming into that place. The interior was lit with tungsten lighting that was somewhat overpowered by the natural light coming in from all the windows and huge overhead skylight.

I hired a 85mm 1.2 a while ago and like you say it is very slow to focus up. It makes you shoot with more care, the images are lovely, but for my wedding photography it is just not practical. I am buying the much cheaper 1.8 in a couple of weeks. I am looking forward to exploring its low light capability too. I usually shoot with the Canon 2.8 zooms....
I'll let you guys know how I get on...
Geoff
Certainly.
The 85mm f/1.2 ain't the cheapest lens on the shelf. The quality of the image from the f.18 version is stellar, so one would need to ask oneself if one should spend all the extra dough, wouldn't one?
Also, and this is a big factor for me, the f/1.8 version has lightening quick focus. The f/1.2 version? Not so much...

I've been leaning towards picking up this lens; I'm quite happy with my current lens stable (17-40L, nifty 50, and 135L, all of which are very sharp and vibrant), but I think an 85 might help fill in the range in-between. I have 100 2.8 Macro coming on Monday, so I think I'll play with that first and see if that can get it done. Otherwise, I'm thinking this lens will probably be next on my list.

After going through this long thread 2 times in a row, i was stunned by the quality and raves of this lens. About 10min later i was on ebay getting one. Hope its super sharp. Should be here in a week. Will try to post something soon and give my first impressions of it on my Canon XT...
Thanx Guys

Here is one my wife took of me while I was trying to convince her that we needed one. :) Well mine arrived yesterday so I guess it worked. The EXIF was stripped, but this one is at f/1.8 I believe. There is ZERO processing on this shot. Only resized for web, no sharpening.

Sad to hear that. My parents' dog Funny, and Irish Terrier has the same problem. It's absolutely forbidden to give her any treats. So sad, 'cause she's such a happy and lovely dog.

Try some veggie type treats for your dog. Ours love broccoli, squash, carrots, and green beans.

One thing I noticed about this lens is that when I tried to focus say on the right eye, and then re-compose while pressing the shutter halfway, the focus is thrown way out and causes out-of-focus shot (on the original focus point). Is it just me or you guys has noticed that, too?

Haven't noticed that but I know if it's in AF and you turn the focus ring manually it switches to MF. I guess I like the manual focus for portrait stuff.
Do most of you use AF for portraits?

It's not just you.. it's actually poor technique. When you focus and recompose, you're throwing the focal plane off to a different angle. So when you're shooting portraits near wide-open on lenses such as fast primes, you'll lose your focus when recomposing. That's why you should be using different AF points.
