I was shooting an AAU basketball game & saw a wife of a friend shooting with a larger lens - it obviously wasn't an "L", or a 70-200, so I guessed it was a 100-300... and I guessed right. She let me take a look & I let her look at mine. She naturally said: "WOW, what a view! Now I know why people buy these!" ... and she didn't even know about the fast AF.

:( My 85mm is going to the Canon Service Center... It's been giving me ERR 01 on my camera for quite some time now, but it seems to be getting worse, doing it almost every time I try and use it now. Contacts look clean (even cleaned them), and the contact block seems to be attached to the lens quite well, so I think something inside is going wrong. It's out of warranty, (bought it 3rd hand here on POTN), so I'm hoping the estimate doesn't get any higher than they have originally given me...
Love this lens, hope I am able to get it working again, for minimal cost.

Well, the initial quote was for $132+tax, so hopefully that is all it will cost. Still worth it to get it repaired, if it doesn't get higher than that, I bought the lens used, which at this point, if I pay that, I could have bought a new one...
Oh, well, if it sky rockets, then I will just have them return it, and figure something else out. Hopefully it is a quick and cheap repair.

Do people feel the tendency for this lens to produce purple fringing varies from lens to lens? Mine def. has this a lot with back lit shots at the wider apertures, say 3.2 and wider. I know this is the ideal condition to produce this, but it is annoying. It is not always an easy fix either. It seems to be hit or miss. I just would like to know if this is a naturally occurring phenomenon with all these lenses or can some be worse than others? Thoughts.

Mine does it too. It is a well knows issue with this lens, I often get purple spots in the eyes when using my speedlite flash, have to be careful with that because when it's too much it could be hard to remove in post processing.

I bought this lens fully aware of the CA, but when I finally got to use the lens, I was suprised the purple fringing isn't as much of a problem as most people put it out to be. This leads me to believe that the extent of CA varies between copies.

I think I would as well. I really only use mine outside. I justify its long FL on the crop by convincing myself that my kids like it better when I'm not all up in their face! The whole crop thing is why I have finally decided I'm done with the 50mm primes. I went with the sigma 30 and am totally stoked. So much more usable. I guess at some time I'll just go full frame. Of course then the Sigma will go bye bye.

I use mine on my crop body pretty much solely for head and shoulder or less portraits. It gives a great depth of field at that distance, imho. I use a sigma 17-50 if I want something in the 30-50mm range and love this combo. Though, Im a rank amateur so... :D

I did use the 85mm I had before on the 7D, but it wasn't very often so when I needed the money... I like both the 30mm and 50mm on the 7D, sadly although the 30mm is my favourite lens on the 7D it's sort of replaced with the 50mm on the 1Ds so I'm going to sell it and pick up either a 35mm f2 or 28mm f1.8.

The 85mm can be a bit long on a crop. You need some room with this lens for crop.

Technically it's the long end for crop if you consider the portrait range on ff to be 85-135.
I'm even considering the 135 for my 60D but only outdoors though.

Assuming he is shooting wide open at f1.8, then this would be about the same as approximately 135mm f2.8 on full frame, which is about right for this type of work. I agree nice job here and just proves it isn't just the equipment, but I certainly prefer working on full frame with a 70-200 f2.8 IS MK II.

Yh, but I'd rather shoot at 1.8 or lower on FF - I'm a shallow dof junkie! :D I'm currently still weighing up whether to get the L or settle for the 1.8...so I'm kinda impressed with what I'm seeing in Dan's work on a crop!

Yh, but I'd rather shoot at 1.8 or lower on FF - I'm a shallow dof junkie! :D I'm currently still weighing up whether to get the L or settle for the 1.8...so I'm kinda impressed with what I'm seeing in Dan's work on a crop!
I have looked at many of Daniel's photos on his flickr for EXIF data. I would say 99% of what I have looked at was shot at 1.8. He must really be quite a distance from the ladies in order to get full body shots.

Sold my 24-70mm 2.8L for this lens yesterday. So glad I did. I used the 24-70mm 10% of the time, and when I did, it was at 70mm.
But hot damn, the depth of field is thin at 1.8 when framing is tight. How do people shoot with 1.2?

It isn't when you look at the full res pic. Plus given the distance to subject at f2 on a crop (to frame the pic) he may well have had nearly 2ft of dof to play with.

only negative about this lens i could find is purple fringe @.@. (but it not that bad unless shooting high contrast and not exposing right)

Just got mine last week from a fellow POTN member and love it. You definetely have to watch the purple fringing at wide aperture and high contrast situations. Try to avoid these situations as much as possible, but in can be fixed with software.

They look sharp to me. Maybe with a bit of motion blur in the first shot. What was the shutter speed?
PS, I dont know how into the freestyle scene you are but I used to work with Eric Malone. He has lots of cool old shots of himself that you can use to compare. EricMalone.com

ilias, its hard to tell at that resolution if its sharp or not on the skier and after 5000 shots I'm sure you know what depth of field is :)
You will see the full size version so will know better than we can tell from that size and if you think its not sharp then I'm sure you're right.
You say your other lenses seem soft to have you considered getting your camera calibrated? Or can you try the lens on another body, maybe even at a local retailer if they're kind enough.

can anyone tell me how well the "lens corrections" preset set to auto for this lens in lightroom 3? it does rather well for other lenses i've tried and the examples in my kelby books but obviously due to copy variation in lenses this feature isnt going to work well with all lenses/copies. if the lens correction preset works well for this lens i think i'll save the cash i been lusting to spend on the sigma 1.4 version. i dont mind the 1.8 or iq of the canon version i just dont want to have to constantly worry about weather or not a certain composition is going to give me tons of ca because i got my 85 1.8 mounted. that and i suck at PP anyway so its to the point that i shoot every day but rarely edit besides examples while im studying and learning more pp skills. so the last thing i want to do is add an extra segment to my workload.

Just got mine yesterday. :D AF is quite fast, maybe, this will be my lens in practicing sports photography. Not sure if it is soft wide-open? Noticeable purple fringe too in highlights.

can anyone tell me how well the "lens corrections" preset set to auto for this lens in lightroom 3? it does rather well for other lenses i've tried and the examples in my kelby books but obviously due to copy variation in lenses this feature isnt going to work well with all lenses/copies. if the lens correction preset works well for this lens i think i'll save the cash i been lusting to spend on the sigma 1.4 version. i dont mind the 1.8 or iq of the canon version i just dont want to have to constantly worry about weather or not a certain composition is going to give me tons of ca because i got my 85 1.8 mounted. that and i suck at PP anyway so its to the point that i shoot every day but rarely edit besides examples while im studying and learning more pp skills. so the last thing i want to do is add an extra segment to my workload.
anyone????

Looks sharp to me...can see that CA on the OOF branch on the tree though...but this lens seems to do that.
I can't wait, my copy comes back from the Canon service center today...

At wide-open right? Thanks for the reply. :D I didn't took much time to check the lens when I bought it last Monday here. The CA is really noticeable in highlights.

Pretty simple set up really. Find a light or object at infinity and focus on the object/light in MF and leave the focus there. Point your camera towards the area of interest and then set your camera to M mode with BULB as the shutter speed. I change the aperture depending on how far away the lightning is from you. If it's close you'll have to stop it down between f/8 and f/11 but if it's further away you'll have to open it up to around f/3.5-f/5. Not sure what this one was taken at but it was definitely further away. Then grab a shutter release and hold down the exposure until you see a bolt in your frame and then release. That's about it.

Not sure, if it's soft wide-open.
If you want to check for softness then:
a) Use a full size picture, not a resized one
b) Don't focus and re-compose, as there is a risk that you will change the distance to the focus point when doing the re-compose. I can't see if you re-composed or just used an off-center focusing point.

Everyone keeps saying that the PF and CA aren't that hard to fix in PP. It is hit or miss with me. I don't find LR3 to have a powerful CA removal system and it always has to be done manually as opposed to with the simple slider in the lens profile. Can a particular lens be improved in this area if sent to canon? Mine just seems pretty bad.
