One thing I noticed about this lens is that when I tried to focus say on the right eye, and then re-compose while pressing the shutter halfway, the focus is thrown way out and causes out-of-focus shot (on the original focus point). Is it just me or you guys has noticed that, too?
I know you posted this 5 days ago, but no one addressed your problem, so:
When you are set to a wide aperture, such as f/1.8, your "depth of field" is very narrow, meaning that the region of your image that will be "acceptably sharp" is narrow. The actual physical dimensions vary with your focal length and your distance from the subject. But if you are shooting close up, like with a head-and-shoulders portrait, the depth of field for wide apertures can be millimeters -- and I mean millimeters because inches is way too broad.
You can see this just by taking a picture on a tripod with a 3-dimensional subject with a "fast" lens taken wide open and close up. Very little of your subject will be sharp.
So, the problem you are likely seeing, or at least that you should be aware of, is that if you are doing a close up portrait or whatever, at a wide aperture, you are probably best served shooting where you focus, because if you move your camera to recompose, you may shift your distance to subject -- even two or three millimeters -- and so what you intended to be in focus is not. Look at your picture and you will probably see some spot that is in focus that, logically, was "in line" with your "recomposing movement".
I'm not saying that's always the cause, but at wide apertures, it is always a consideration!

Collin and Tony, thanks much for your response to my concern. Your comments does makes more sense. Much appreciated.

I have this lens. I love how sharp it is, sharpest lens in my batch right now, the others being a tamron 17-50 and the other a 100-400. Excellent for portraits and beautiful bokeh.
That said, I'm pretty dissapointed in the AF. Sure it is fast and quiet, but it hunts like crazy whenever you have something behind a focus point that doesn't have a ton of contrast.
Anybody else notice this?

if i were to start shooting models / portraits, aside from my 50mm 1.8, should i choose the 85 1.8, or the 135 f2?
im torn between these two lenses. but they both seem to be amazing.

Dude 135 f/2 ROCKS for models and portraitsThe 135mm/2 sounds great, but on a 22mm camera indoors it might be too long.
In my house, 85mm usually gives me head and shoulders.
How much room do you have?

I went through the same dilemma myself not too long ago. Finally, I opted for 85 1.8 thinking my 17-85 gives me wide enough view. I don't regret the decision.
Having said that, UWA is still on my wish list.

Ok got the lens like i said i would.
I would have to say its real sharp in most cases, prone to some flare (i got no lens hood) Fast and accurate AF and virtualy silent as well. Very solid but kinda of heavy. Blokeh is perfect and very nice. I paid $250Can for a mint used copy and dont regret it. Well worth the money. It definately compliments my EF50 1.8II (two of the best lenses for the $ imo)
Must have a bit of extra room to make this work for you, so taking pics in small spaces isn't easy, but thats to be expected from a prime lens more than 50mm imo...
My final words... GET IT! :)

I doubt the L gives you any better pictures then those...
I am afraid it won't. I am giving it up for the versatility of the 24-70 F2.8 with my 30D for portrits. Will buy it back when I get a FF!!!

I understand your comment about the reflector, but trust me, in no way does your image really suffer without it. Were you thinking that it could have been used to lighten the back of her head? - Stu

You're very welcome Vic - always happy to compliment work that has been well executed. I see what you mean by a possible hair light, although I'll bet this would look better as an actual print. I find a lot times when I complete work in PS and then "save for web", the web image gains a bit of contrast, tonal range is lost slightly and dark portions go darker.

So.. I was beginning to hate my choice to shoot primes... luckily shooting my mates dogs under tree cover on a dull English day has re-opened my eyes :D
Used shadow/highlight to bring out shot 1, hard working shooting a very fast and completely black dog! Might have over saturated the eyes... shot 2 has just had basic contrast.

What do you mean blow out? If you can't keep the shutter speed low enough to shoot at f/1.8, then you need to lower the ISO. If you are talking about lens flare, then get a lens hood.

Nice shots Mike, you have a very cute daughter!
As I mentioned in a previous post, I bought this lens early last year primarily for my boy's basketball games. Last night I tested it out along with the off camera lighting gear I received for Christmas. This was taken while my boys were playing video games before bed last night, it's not a great shot but I was amazed by the sharpness while shooting wide open. I really need to play with this lens more...
Converted from Raw in Canon DPP with +4 sharpening and -0.5 exposure. No additional PP.

Of course it will! the XT have a 1/4000 shutter speed limit and the x0D and 5/1D series 1/8000. The lens is made for LOW light not for noon at the sahara desert...:) In good light you got f2.8+ until you get a proper exposure.

are these taken w/ the regular 85MM or the L lens? Also, i'd addume this lens performs similar to my 50MM 1.4 on my xti right??

These are all taken with the regular 1.8 lens, not the L. The L costs significantly more.
The lens would be similar in focal length to your 50mm but only if this lens was on a FF body, such as the 5d. But optical performance is very similar (ie sharp and nice bokeh)
