So I have been following this thread for a long time and we all know whenever you follow a thread for too long, what happens next; you end up bying the lens :)

I found a local craigslist deal. The lens is still under warranty. I met the guy tonight and checked the lens for dust, etc. Well, there were quite a few dust spots in there. Seemed liked the lens had been used quite roughly although the physical appearance made the lens look like almost new. I took a few shots with it attached to my 5DII and didn't notice any dust spots on the LCD even when I magnified the image. Should I pull the trigger on it? Does anyone know how much would Canon charge for cleaning this lens? Is it typical for lenses to have visible dust but not show up on images.

Your help would be much appreciated.

Ive got one that has what I would call a good bit of dust on the front element. I dont know if its on the inside or the outside but it wont come off with a blower. Anyway, Ive never seen any of it on my images and the lens kicks butt. If I were selling mine in the condition it is in, Id probably ask $250 for it.

I've bought this lens four months ago, great deal, secondhand for 270 Euro's and I love it. I have a hard time choosing between this one and the 135 f2 when I go out and only want to take one lens. I think it's a very nice focal on FF, I use it on a 5D II.
Taken tons of images in those four months with this lens. It's a great lens for portraits, lightweight, fast, sharp, ...

I agree with both sentiments! The picture of the duffel bag is the reason I bought a 5D, to me it just produces a sort of "cinematic" look to whatever I shoot. I was fortunate to have already had the 85mm previously and it's a like a whole new lens on the 5D coming from the 7D.

If the lens is still under warranty I believe canon will clean it for you for free. Don't quote me on that, but they have done lots of "small favors" for me when I drop stuff off in person at Canon Irvine. Maybe because I'm in CPS?

I don't see any obvious dust on those images. However at web sizes it's hard to evaluate.

Thank you pridash, I found it a very photogenic detail. It was actually used as a tool bag. These folks are just amazing, keeping this steamy, greasy beast alive.

(I'm not sure if there's a limit in image size, but this is the size I put my images on my blog, just plain easy to re-use them here in the same size.)

This lovely '92 civic just turned 258,000 mile old:D and can fly up the canyon to the river with 4 boats top and a few stinky whitewater junkies piled in as well as anything else out there. With kayaking you do a lot of driving, this baby is great on gas!! I have never tried any car photog and was going for a similar look with regards to perspective and processing as I see in some of the shots of the fancy European sports cars I see!! DO you think it works??? (just for fun of course)

I shot this pic with the 7D/85 f/2.8 and Fader MII and studio strobes. It shows the Lightcraft is a very good vari-neutrel density filter if you match it up with the right lens.

I'm debating my 35L on a FF too...A lot of money on a lens to not get used as much as I would like, .it takes great photos just the FL I can't get used to quite yet. 50 just seems right. I gotta get me a 85 though, I had it once and it's a great FL. Just not sure in regards to the canon-sigma 85s. Both lens sample pages are phenomenol.

It doesnt make any sense to sell a workhorse lens capable of lots of things, to buy a specialty lens. I understand about budgets, but save a little and build a kit rather than surfing from one thing to another.

Just a question for everyone here, I have a 60D (so no MFA) and I think my new lens is front focusing. How many people here have had to send in their lens for adjustment? I think it may just be me getting used to an entirely new setup to be honest with you.

There hasn't been much talk of this lens front or back focusing. I say give it a little time with real world shooting and see if it works out for you.

Oh heck, I don't know...Mine has been fine and coming from the siggy 30 thread and all the complaining about focus issues with that one, I just can't remember a lot of that going on with this lens. Maybe I'm wrong.

Ok I did some quick photos of a few of my students. Not the greatest shots but all were taken at 1.8. Shot in .jpg with some PP. I think it was me pixel peeking stupid focusing objects that got me all worried. I think this lens is fine. Comments?

And iadubber, nice aquarium shots! I tried taking my 85 to the aquarium figuring it would be a good low light lens, but I quickly realized it's not the best for that since it has a relatively large minimum focus distance. I'll have to check out those extension tubes!

Thanks for your input. I am focusing on the eyes however I think it may be either the way I'm shooting or the camera holding technique that's letting me down. I've tried shooting using back button focus and have found that helps as it prevents me from jabbing at the shutter button if that makes sense.

I guess I'm so unsure because I see so many great examples here sharp at wide open.
