No too bad, I didn't use any focus rings, I just moved the lenses towards and away from the subject until it was in focus and hit the shutter. These were done handheld, no tripod, no focus rail. Just stop down to f/22 and hope for the best. :lol:

I did a 50mm reversed on a 100mm macro and took shots of lilly stamen but that pales into insignificance compared to this! :D

Nope... My wife can still see just fine, in fact, she didn't even see spots afterward. I shot with the flashes at ~50-60% power, but aimed them from the side and across her eye, not into it; so I'm thinking this may have something to do with her lack of spots after having two flashes fired so closely to her eye.

I finally picked up a new 85mm f/1.8 today (thanks to all posting in this topic for convincing me :D).

I love it. It is so much better than the 50mm f/1.4 in my opinion. It is sharp wide open (the 50mm f/1.4, at least mine, is VERY soft), the contrast wide open is great and the auto-focus is quick and accurate. With the 50mm f/1.4 I'm getting so much more completely misfocused images. The 85mm f/1.8 is much, much better in my experience so far!

Really, the only problem of this lens is the purple fringing. But this can be corrected in Lightroom (or any other tool) quite easily in post-processing.

I'm loving this lens!

Usually shooting with a shade WB when not in the shade ;) I also add desaturation to most of my stuff too [aside from my HDR/Urbex stuff] but in truth there isn't a lot to say otherwise - there's no secrets or plug-ins or layers/masks etc.... I didn't even use CS for the above shot aside from resize/bars for web use, purely edited in LR.

Thanks for the kind words. No gels used, I just replaced the grey bg with the solid texture. I shot using my 5D2 with a 580 EXII through a 24" softbox, camera right, a white reflector camera left and a 430 EXII as a hairlight. The grey background is a "Savage" 5' x 6' collapsible with two shades of grey.

I hope you don't mind but here's a crop showing the 'fly away' hair better. I also did some extra pp work on this version. Using a grey bg makes masking quick and easy.

I should also mention I'm very impressed with this lens.

My awesome wife bought me this lens for Valentine's Day and I finally got a chance to take a few pics at lunch today. As much as I like my 28 f1.8 I was a little nervous about getting another non-L lens just because the 28 is more of an f2 vs. an actual f1.8 lens. The 85 on the other hand is way better than I expected. The sharpness and DOF are wonderful.

I thought it fitting with so many dog pictures here that my first post be of my miniature Beagle. Converted in LR3, Camera Neutral, Bright 50, Cont 25, re-sized with zero sharpening at any point... even with the compression of the upload they still look great!!!

Both shots are ambient light with 1D3, ISO 1600, f1.8, 1/160, no noise reduction.

Don't ever be worried about a Canon lense just because it doesn't have a red ring around it! It's all great quality, especially the 85mm f/1.8, I looooove my copy! The only lense in my collection I can say for sure I will never sell.





Unless of course, I strike it rich and can afford the f/1.2!

yeah. i thought it was a good idea at first. now im not wanting to take pictures of myself daily. its a pain at times. oh well. im already on day 50.

i still try to shoot other things too. but some days i dont even feel like taking any pictures. haha.

+1...love this shot. I have come back to it a couple times today (yes, I am forced to be in front of the computer a lot). I have a daughter just about this age, I very much know this expression. PP is right on, subtle, but there nonetheless. Nice job

Nothing too special. I use PS (CS5) for my PP.

Basic flow is: sharpen - heal - curves - exposure - contrast - hue & sat. I basically set the tone and tweak as I add adj. layers.

It may sound like a lot but this photo took about 15mins to do...and that includes opening PS! :lol:
