I have a 400D and was wondering what mode most of you shoot at??
I use pretty much M most of the time. If it gets hectic I turn it into Av mode as well :)

My camera usually sits in Aperture Priority mode. This allows me to decide how much depth of field I want to aim for, balanced with how much sharpness. If the shutter speed becomes too low I increase the ISO accordingly.
Thanks for that Jo....will see how I get on

Congrats!
There is a bit of a learning curve if you have never used an F/1.8 lens before, that DOF is razor thin. This is an exceptional lens and one of the sharpest Canon makes.
And Welcome to POTN!!!

but for a low light lens, it's truly fast and wonderful.
don't be afraid to shoot at higher ISOs as well.
you'll get some extra speed, and noiseninja/lightroom works wonders, if your shots are noisy.
it took me a little to get used to mine (and i still am), but you'll love it. i promise!

I agree, it takes some getting used to. If you shoot at very wide aperatures you have to make sure you're focus is dead on. All of the shots look good except the first one which looks like there's some motion blur or something. It's hard for me to distinguish where the focus was put on that shot.
rooftopsuicideclub
31st of March 2008 (Mon), 09:24
if i can make a recommendation, you should try getting used to focusing using only the center box on your AF. it looks to me like you're shooting with all points of the AF active, which may account for some of your focus issues. for me, i started using the one point focus and it not only improved my shots, but improved my eyes. it taught me to frame my shots, and now i use the wheel to adjust my focus points on the fly. a vertical shutter/battery grip makes this technique even more versatile. wanna frame your shot with the singer in the right side, with stage lights on the left? one button press/6-7 clicks of the wheel, and your subject is in focus! the more you do it, the better your technique becomes. this is just what works for me. the good news is your 85 is faaaaaast! enjoy it!

Hmmmmm.....Mum, how's this newest setup going for you? You didn't like the 24-105?
Not going anywhere yet. Nope, wasn't fond of the 24-105L, but had to return it anyway as I depleted our bank account by mistake (money hadn't cleared from Paypal yet, yada, yada...). Anyway, I think I'm just an idiot and can't handle zooms. I really want to try to figure out depth of field better and I was getting too confused with my zooms. I also have had the privilege of the primes, so that also played into this. I just threw the 200L in there so I could have some length again - and it was cheaper than the 70-200s and a prime. I'm trying to branch out from kid pics, so I figured I could use the 200 for both nature experimental stuff, etc. as well as kid portraits.

if your dog doesnt like to sit for you, take him somewhere that you can get about 20 feet away, have someone hold him, compose & prefocus your camera on a mark about halfway between you or a little closer (with reasonably shallow DOF)... then have the person holding the dog release him and you call him to you. when he gets to your selected mark, shoot
you might have to take a couple of goes to get it right but you should get a lovely portrait out of it

Petja proudly showed me what Grandma let her handle. Even so, it was a split-second job, on single shot and AI Servo. The cellphone keyboard just happened to fall on the same focus plane as the eye. I adjusted the image for print, so it looks a bit harsh on the monitor.

The 85 1.8 nicely doubles as a macro lens!
85 1.8 + set of kenko tubes.
That's my one problem with this lens; I wish it had better native close-up capability. That's why I prefer the 60 macro, but it can't do f/1.8 though. :(

This lens continues to impress me! After shooting my 70-200mm f/2.8L IS at T-ball events almost exclusively, I decided to give my 85mm f/1.8 a shot. All my shots were wide open at f/1.8, and I have to say the keep rate is phenomenal, not to mention the quality!
Shot in High shutter speed mode, AI Servo focus, ISO 100, 1/800". First image is an unprocessed (other than RAW to JPG), no sharpening adjustments, full shot. Second is a 100% pixel crop, and not even a center crop. I can read the small print on his glove!

Went to the Circus last night. I am sure that no other lens could have captured this shot. It is a bit soft due to the thin DOF and mostly due to not being able to get the shutter speed down any more, but still a very usable image, to me at least.
Not cropped, only played around with it in LR2.0 to try and even out the lighting a bit. (First time using LR too)

Never even crossed my mind. If I had more money than I knew what to do with....maybe. The 85L is a completely different lens though. The AF on the 1.8 is unbelievable and the sharpness is amazing.

thought about it briefly... I consider my lens collection pretty well nailed down right now. The only thought I have is going back to the 17-40 from a 16-35, but this lens and the 50mm prime will remain non Ls for me. The 85L is too big, heavy, expensive, and slow to AF for me. It's the AF that kills it, but the size is also insane if you've handled one. The bokeh is awesome on the L but is it that much better than this 85mm? Because this lens rocks.

i'd have to agree, although I'd love to have the L. The size of the L makes the 1.8 look like a dwarf. But if you NEED 1.2, you need it.

TheAztech - Love the shot. Do you shoot with a large aperture in the studio setting or do you do the blurring of the background in PP? I really like it as it makes the model "pop" out from the background. Someday I hope to shoot as well in the studio.
One last question - do you shoot hand held or strictly with a tripod of some sort? Your pictures have amazing sharpness.

One of the best statement so far. NO PP should be allowed (besides resize) for lens reviews.

Well these aren't reviews but an archive of photos.
Of course if the web is always the final destination for your photos, almost any lens will do.

With a telephoto lens, you don't have as much depth of field to work with. f/5.6 on an 85mm lens is not the same as f/5.6 on a 30mm lens in terms of DOF at the same distance from your subject. You have to really narrow up your aperture (larger f/stop number) or get further away to be able to get everyone in focus. you may want to start a new thread in the lens section with an example photograph to get some great help on this subject.
Here is a very detailed explanation of DOF, but it probably won't make much sense.

The 85 1.8 IQ has a unique look to it of my lenses. I can usually tell which pictures were shot with it and a lot of the pics I see here look familiar.
Pros:
Sharpness
AF speed for low light situations
Wide aperture
Cons:
Significant CA problems around lighting with wide apertures. Not easily fixed with ACR or Lightroom.
So so color rendition
So so contrast
So so bokeh "quality" (not quantity)
This lens is a must have IMO for sports shot in sub par light and is okay at portraits, but the colors and the CA are not what I'm used to with L glass. But then, when it comes to low light AF it outperforms the L glass equivalent at 1/4 the cost so it deserves a place in Canon's lineup. It's not often the lens I reach for, but it's the "only" lens I reach for in some situations.
I'm not near my pics, but I'll post some when I get around my samples.
