Actually.. as long as you frame those 5 people the same, it does not matter which focal length you use. It will always have same DOF. (assuming same aperture)

If you used 30mm to frame all 5 people from.. let's say 10 feet away.
You will have to stand 28 feet away to frame them the same with 85mm.
And about 67 feet away for 200mm.

In each case.. the background will change and so does the bokeh, but the DOF will remain the same.

I'm not sure about the CA issues that so many talk about. Maybe I just don't have the eye for it, or my copy doesn't suffer as badly. My trapeze photo is about the most extreme contrast situation there is, and I did notice some CA, but it was only visible when viewing near 100% (to me at least). I didn't even bother trying to take it out when I posted the image here.

Thank you, I kinda left that out. I meant to explain as an "or" situation. I fixed it in my post.

I shot these birds several times. MOST of the shots show almost no CA, and then there's ones like this one below....

Don't get me wrong. My 85mm f/1.8 is the sharpest lens I own (and it's not an L) but it does have its limitations which I need to figure out how to work around. I wonder if the 85L has these same issues (anyone?)

the L has CA as well, but it goes away faster than the 1.8 version. I did a comparison and the L was gone by around 2.8 and the non-L had to stop down 1 more to get the same result (so f/4). It was a non-scientific test, but it was back to back on a tripod with cable release. At least these were the numbers for my subject, it could vary. Taken with a 5D, I shot a 1D III and was looking at the CA around the wording on the front of the camera.

Gosh, that CA was ugly. What aperature did you use for the specific shot?

The 85L has severe CAs as well, that's probably the only thing I don't like about the lens.

Wide open, f/1.8... I generally shoot at f/1.8 and get excellent shots - that one is probably the worst CA I've ever gotten out of it though. In general, it's not there at all, but for some reason that one particular one was ugly.

Here's EXIF:

Ok. Thank you. in fact, this is a 1.8 shot. Its all above expected at 1.8 as far as I'm concerned. Even better if this is just happening now and then, eg. worst case scenario.

Im going to order this right now :)

Despite being my example, don't let it scare you off. my 85mm f/1.8 is my best lens as far as IQ and speed, and I shoot by far 90% of my shots AT f/1.8. What you see above is abnormal for this lens.

Excellent lens, despite its low cost!

Love that shot, Lars. I don't think the composition is that flawed; angle at which the horse is positioned is very dynamic and it being in the center doesn't affect the composition in this image, imo. I would remove the border-line at the top, though - I find it a bit distracting. In the end, your image, your say! ;)

Here's one from today, something a bit unusual. Some horseshoe crabs outside a seafood restaurant.

I actually thought that I had shot this with my 50 1.4, and I was thinking to myself 'damn, that looks surprisingly good. It's unusually sharp and the bokeh is uncharacteristically nice'. Then I looked at the exif, saw that it was shot at 85mm, and went 'ooohhhhh, duh!'.

That's the (admittedly lame) joke; the shot is so nice if you said it was taken with the "L" at 1.2, no one would argue. I'm a firm believer that 95% of the things people shoot with the 1.2 here would be just as nice done with the 1.8 at 1/4 the cost.

The pictures are great! But can someone tell me a major benefit of having the 85 f/1.8 over the 50 f/1.4, other than 35mm?

Right now the only two lenses I have are the Canon 24-70 f/2.8 and the 50 f/1.4. I've been *thinking* about selling or trading the 50 and getting the 85. The one upside I see is that if I get the 85, it'll be the longest lens I have.

I don't shoot a lot of sports. I'm much more into wedding photography.

Any thoughts?

just depends on which focal length you prefer. the 85 has a faster auto focus as well. I have both, and use both on my 5d. (I had both as well with an XT).

I'd save up the money and keep the 50 & add the 85 to the group. It's a great bang for the buck lens.

the major benefit is the extra 35mm. but its hard to say if it acutally is a benefit or not, i just recently shot a wedding and a stack of corporate events using the lens's listed in my thread, i used the 50mm 1.8 ($100 lens.. i know) for about 80% of the time.. but i did have a lot of freedom to walk around, the 85 however would enable you to get just that extra bit closer in the wedding hall, dont sell the 50mm though.. its a VERY convinient focal legnth for portraits for 2..ish people from a few metres away.. and then even wider than that is the 28 which is quite nice, mixed reviews apparently.. but i love mine! great AF, lovely optics and its a really good price..

Thanks!

Here was my set up.....

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k320/livelifelivepics/setup.jpg

430 EX on stand with umbrella triggered by the 580 EX on camera. Flashes in manual mode, I believe the 580 EX was 1/128 and the 430 EX was 1/8 power, reflector for fill. I did some work on her skin in post processing and a little USM.

My question is, "Are the images in this thread so wonderful because better/more experienced photographers are the ones who buy this type of lens?"

I thoroughly enjoy visiting this thread, not necessarily because I want to buy another lens ... but to see the great images, and learn more about how to compose a good image - especially of people and pets.

Thanks everyone!

I think it is 3 things:

1.) Lens is that good.
2.) Good Composition/Subjects
3.) Post Processing (lets be honest)

Yes, most of the photos in this thread could have been taken with just about any lens and turned out almost the same. Honestly, the lens is one of the least important factors when making most photos. With that said, there are things that this lens can do better than almost any other lens. One of those things is its focusing speed. Another thing that many people like is the feel of the focal length and the working distance that the lens affords.

Well this is a very good lens, imo. I haven't owned a lot of lenses before and I'm not the most experienced person around so take my opinion for what it's worth.

here is the same photo that I posted above without the skin treatment and USM...

This file was imported into lightroom and exported without any tinkering by my part. There are some lightroom presets that were applied because I shot in RAW and lightroom converts it to JPEG.

I think what makes this picture is not really the lens but the lighting... but the lens is a joy to use. It's a nice size, focuses well, is nice optically, has good bokeh, and is a great focal length for portraits.

I'm really enjoying this lens and especially the creamy bokeh it can produce. Here's one of my daughter captured in the backyard at f/1.8 on a borrowed 5D.

Yeah, loving mine too. It really matches up well with my mkIII. Some lenses seem better than others on certain bodies. The mkIII and this 85/1.8 is fast becomming one of my favorite combo's.

the major benefit is the extra 35mm. but its hard to say if it acutally is a benefit or not, i just recently shot a wedding and a stack of corporate events using the lens's listed in my thread, i used the 50mm 1.8 ($100 lens.. i know) for about 80% of the time.. but i did have a lot of freedom to walk around, the 85 however would enable you to get just that extra bit closer in the wedding hall, dont sell the 50mm though.. its a VERY convinient focal legnth for portraits for 2..ish people from a few metres away.. and then even wider than that is the 28 which is quite nice, mixed reviews apparently.. but i love mine! great AF, lovely optics and its a really good price..

Have to say that I love the 85 f/1.8 on the MarkIII as well. Not to bash the 50 f/1.4, but it's not as sharp as the 85.

Must be why it seemed to stand out in the glass case at the camera store I was at the other day. They had an 85mm F1.8 for sell and looked to be in great shape. Just wondering if $180.00 is a fair price for this used lens?

If I was going to buy this lens to do portraits etc... What aperture do most of you shoot at?.....I know it depends on what DOF you want, but lets say I wanted the whole face. Would f/4-f5.6 be enough to get the face in focus? I know the question sounds a bit dumb. I know what I want to say, but it isn't coming out right...lol

When I use this lens I typically shoot between f/2.2 and f/3.5. There is no reason that you couldn't get an entire face in focus @ f/1.8 as long as your other parameters for DOF were correct. ;) Check out one of the online DOF calculators and try out some figures to see what I mean.

Not sure if it is okay to quote ones self but I did it anyway in order to give an update.
Went down to the camera store thinking I was going to get the 85mm lens. My error was in bring the wife along to the store with me. First the price was higher than I thought but $250.00 still seemed good and it worked great on my 40D in the shop. The problem was that the wife informed me that she feels I should buy three XSI systems, one for her, my daughter and my son as they all like taking pictures too. Yes, the kids are better at it than the wife and I are and anything that get the kids into art (almost anything) instead of playing I usually agree too. So the 85mm is on hold until I can get cameras for the rest of the family.
Thanks to all that took the time to give their opinions and advice to me. Now does anyone know where I can get a second and third job?

Thanks again for the help,
Craig

well, this is no masterpiece. Just wanted to show off how well it performed with autofocus, even with the 350D, it's superfast. At least it is my fastest lens.

and of course 100% crop, which might not seem so impressive regarding sharpness, but I'd say most of the blurriness is caused by movement. Anyhow, with some quick unsharp mask work it is all good.

OK, I couldn't resist any longer. After viewing the many great shots in this thread and considering the value of having a lens that can open to f/1.8 I just bought one. This is a great lens!

I know there seems to be a plethora of dog shots here, but I couldn't resist. My sheltie loves sitting in the part of our yard that is often a "wind tunnel" (we live in the hills above the San Francisco Bay and wind just comes with the territory). I think it is in his Scottish island genes.

Thanks to all of those who posted before. You really helped me see the value of this lens.

Picture taken on a 40D at f/3.5, 1/400th second, 400 ISO. No changes in Lightroom other than a bit of a crop - then exported to Photoshop Elements and resized.

Cool-looking dog! The capture seems to be soft/OOF.

Thanks again for the help,
Craig

Would you adopt me?
Or marry me? :)

Yup. Then when we moved up to a "real bike" we used to skid so much that the back tire would have bare spots.
