Got mine yesterday. My first shot out of the box. I think I missed the focus a bit as it appears to have locked on the hair bow. But in low light and from across the room, a great capture with a fabulous lens I think!

Disclaimer: I could be wrong:)

I thought I had read in another post where many primes are plagued by this problem when used "wide open" in bright sunlight/ conditions. Check the apertures in your problem pics and see if they are all 1.8 and taken in bright conditions. If thats the case, try stopping down a bit to see if it helps.

I think it's pretty normal for this lens wide open. I don't notice it when I stop down a little though.

I notice some on mine until about f/2.2 in high contrast situations. It is pretty normal for this lens. Kind of a pain, but it can be cleaned up in PP.

maybe for outdoor shooting, but not so much for indoor shots with natural light. just depends on what you need. more reach or larger aperture.

laxx

Heh, I have both and they are both fun to use. I've been using the 85 for outdoor sports in day time simlpy for the fact that I shoot individual players at f2.2. Can't do that with the 70-200 f4 and the subject isolation is wonderful.

I'm planning on getting the 70-200 f2.8 IS, so with that around, I'm not sure if I'll keep the 85 and the 70-200 f4. We'll see.

Will it be a good decision to sell this one?Only if I didn't need what the 85 offers - short telephoto, wide aperture, fast focusing, compact package; and did need what the 70-200 offers - focal length flexibility, full telephoto. I don't see one as a replacement for the other.

No way! I love both of those lenses way too much to part with either, but I would certainly not sell the 85 even to get the 70-200 f/4 L. I would wait and come up with the cash another way.

Here is a photo from this past weekend. My daughter (far left) performed in a Shakespeare festival. The lighting was very low (they were trying to simulate a night scene)! I always use my 85mm for low light situations such as this. I shoot RAW and usually have to raise the exposure some with DPP. This is a very versatile lens!

By the way, I am relatively new to photography (just started a year ago), so any CC on the photo is welcome. Thanks!

im thinking about getting the 85 1.8,
i really enjoy shooting with the 50 1.8, but is the 85 1.8 going to give me more uses then i would with my 50 1.8 or would the difference in fl and iq be very little?
also considering maybe gettin the 135L, but then dont know if that would be too long.
i mainly take photos of my kids and random stuff walking around

The AF is much faster than for this lens than the 50 1.8. This would make it more useful in some situations.

I often find it to be a bit too long on a crop body for the kiddos indoors, but it is great outdoors when you have a little more room to work with.

I love mine, amazing lens for the price. It is a bit long indoors but it's great for getting shots of kids from a distance without them noticing.

yeah i love the 85mm 1.8 on the full frame sensor, i found it too long on my 400D, i now find 50mm and 85mm on the full frame are a perfect portrait combo, going to grab the sigma 50mm or the canon 50L soon as the 50 1.8 is a bit depressing. lol the 70-200 is awesome on the 5D as you can shoot 1600 and 3200 iso with hardly any noise, i avoided using it on the 400D as i could only shoot it in broad daylight to get fast enough shutter speeds i'd definately grab a 28mm and an 85mm for the 400D and a 70-200 for a zoom walkaround, if your mainly into portraits then the 28 and 85 are a great combo

Actually, Minis and Shetlands are different. Minis must have a height of less than 38 inches. Shetlands range from 38 to 42 inches. Shetlands can be ridden while it is not recommended to ride Minis as it can cause injury.

Well, he started with 2 (one was pregnant) and things have just gone from there. Luckily, they don't eat much more than a larger breed dog. Here in the US, registered ones can fetch a nice price so the more babies you have the better:)!

Yeah I've only had this lens just under a week, but it's definately my favourite lens now. :P I'm sad I hadn't bought prime lenses from the start, although my 70-200 f4 is still a great lens too.

I'm glad you like the photo I know what you mean about the framing, I have a shot where her head isn't so central, there is more of the background, however she is partially blinking, so that photo doesn't work. :P

Just bought the 85 f1.8. I love this focal length, farly better than my 50mm on crop.

It seems sharpless than my 50mm f1.4 :?

It seems impossible to shot under 1/100s. Are you able to shoot slower ? In this case, all my shots are OOF

I made a kind of mistake at the shop : i tried the 85L. Where i shot at 1/100s, the 85L was able to shot at 1/400s @f1.2 ! The 85L is producing an incredible bokeh. Such a piece of glass is impressive and soooo sexy ! Definitely THE portrait lens.
One day, it will be mine...

This is a truly amazing picture!

Here's my question:

I have a Rebel 450D xsi, 1.6X crop.

Taking this picture's setting as an example: I know I can't get the same shallow dof on a 1.6 crop with the same framing, lens and settings because my distance to the subject would be greater.

However, I cannot seem to be able to obtain such a shallow dof with similar framing and settings on a 50mm 1.8 which should in theory be around 80mm on a full frame.

My understanding is that with a 50mm 1.8 on a 1.6X body, I should get about the same shallow dof with a similar framing and distance to subject as with the 85mm 1.8 on a full frame with the same settings, with the difference of image quality and perspective, of course...

Can anybody help me understand this?

Thank you, this is an amazing lens, this forum helped me making a great buy!

I think this is the best lens Canon makes for under $500. You will love the difference from the kit lens as you'll be able to shoot in all sorts of conditions without flash that you couldn't before. The sharpness is very good and focusing is fast... the drawbacks would be bad chromatic aberration (color fringing on highlights) and.... hmmmm.... you have to buy the crappy hood separately? There aren't many drawbacks to this lens.

Nice!

Were you able to get the DoF to be *that* shallow with just the 85 f1.8? Or did you add some blur to the background in post processing? I only ask because I noticed halation in some of these shots.

Too right this lens is awesome!
you wont be able to recreate the 5D effect..
the only way would be to shoot with a 50L at 1.2 to get anything like the DOF you get on the 85mm 1.8 at 1.8 on the 5D

I seem to be loving this effect. Can someone explain to me how to get this effect? is it PP or some special setting?

shot wide open on the 5D, the "halation" is an effect of using the high fill light
