Here are a few from a wedding this weekend. I had the 85/1.8 on a 1D3 for 95% of the day...

Here's my question:

My understanding is that with a 50mm 1.8 on a 1.6X body, I should get about the same shallow dof with a similar framing and distance to subject as with the 85mm 1.8 on a full frame with the same settings, with the difference of image quality and perspective, of course...
!

you'll get the same DoF on the 50mm 1.8 as you would on a 5D. i.e more DoF than an 85 1.8.

i'd get the sigma 50mm

85mm is awesome on full frame but on crop i found it tediously tight on my old 400D

sigma 50mm is substancially better than the canon 50 1.4

I really like the focal length of the 85mm on a crop body, It's like a mini 135L. :D

Having said that - It's all personal taste, but I prefer a little more zoom, and it also makes for better subject isolation, if and when I move to full frame with a cheap 5D or a 5DmkII in a couple of years I know I'll still like the 85mm without the 1.6 crop, but I think 50mm on full frame might be too wide for my liking. That was the logic to my buying, after weeks of debating - anyway! XD

Oh and I'm glad you like the photos, I really love your photo of the girl and the guy sitting on those stone/concrete things in the street (sorry I can't describe it better) >_> I'm sure you know which excellent photo I'm talking about, the photo is much more flattering than my description. :P

Seriously though, those pain au chocolat were insane, me and the friend I was staying with cycled to the boulangerie every morning to get them. I thought it was the only was I would be able to remember them, I've never done any food photography, but I couldn't resist the pain au chocolat, they were simply too good.

And the sea was beautiful, we stayed on the rocky beach from around 7pm until 10:30pm by waves, and watched the sunset and the moon rise, no breeze, around 26 degrees C even at that time. It was fantastic.

Glad you like the pics. =)

I prefer the second shot to the first, I think that the composition is better I find the face of the dog in the top photo is too centred, and, seeing as you asked for advice, did you expose them manually, or use AV? or another mode?

I think the top shot is over-exposed with some blown highlights, and the bottom picture seems to be exposed better.

If you were using AV then, the black on the dog probably threw the camera into overexpose, and you might need to dial in a bit of exposure compensation, -1/3EV or -2/3EV, to get the exposure right. When I photograph my black cat, I have to dial in -1EV otherwise he is overexposed. :P

I also find the wire mesh in the background a little offputting.

Other than those points I think they are both nice shots of your dog. I also tend to focus on the eyes, even if other parts of the subject are oof, it tends to look better (in the majority of circumstances) I think.

Thanks for your comments and advice, the first shot is manual and the second av. Heres 2 more shots both in full manual mode, no touching up done at all, they look a bit dark to me but black should be dark right?. Thanks again,

Yep these photos look nice, I don't think they are too dark, yes black should be dark, but these is still loads of detail in all the hairs and the shine in Staffy's coat, there isn't any black where it's so dark there is no longer any detail.

You've certainly got the focus dead, they look very crisp! I especially like the second shot, I think the direction she is looking is more flattering and you've caught the expression in his/her? eye. :)

Good focus and good exposure considering the lighting. The biggest problem is the lighting though, the mid-day sun is pretty harsh and presents many challenges. You should try and do outdoor portraits in the morning or early evening hours. If you must do them during the mid-day, you should try and find some open shade.

Of course, sometimes none of that is possible. If you want to learn more about photographing people (or animals), I would recommend the National Geographic Photography Field Guide: People and Portraits. (http://www.amazon.com/National-Geographic-Photography-Field-Guide/dp/0792264991/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1220317662&sr=8-1) It's an older book, but everything still applies no matter what gear you are using.

I have seen people in this thread mention using this with extension tubes successfully but how about a 1.4x tele-convertor in a pinch? With such a fast lens, this might be tempting in some situations. Mine is en-route so I haven't gotten my hands on it yet.

Rudi
2nd of September 2008 (Tue), 04:30
The Canon 1.4x Extender will not work with the 85mm f/1.8 - the Extender protrudes out quite a bit, so you would need and extension tube just to mount it to the lens.

What is the purpose of using the TC? Why not crop instead. A 1.4 on the 85 makes it a 119 f/2.5. The addition of 34mm is not that big of a deal IMO. That would only be a slight crop or perhaps a step or two forward.

Rudi
2nd of September 2008 (Tue), 07:26
The good thing about a TC is that it makes the image bigger without any effect on the minimum focus distance! So, it mimics an extension tube (not as effective as one of those, but you don't lose infinity focus, which you do with the extension tube). Good for pseudo-macro... :)

I understand that. I just don't see much point in using it on the 85. The MFD isn't great on this lens to start. Adding the TC won't do much for magnification in pseudo-macro, IMO. I tried using mine with tubes and found it to be quite lacking compared to other alternatives that I already owned.

EDIT: LOL, and then Pete shows us that it can work just fine. I still didn't like it. ;)

I was thinking of both macro use and also adding the extra 34mm. It looks as though the macro part would work....thanks for the great samples Pete!

You are probably right about cropping being the better option versus using the tc, Mike. I realize that teleconvertors are best used with larger lenses but thought it might be worth a shot. Thanks for the replies!

I recently tried to buy an 85L but after having 2 copies backfocus on my camera, I decided to just stay with the f/1.8. Here are a couple of shots with a 30D.

bob_r,

I'm by no means an expert but both shots look a little "cool" in regards to kelvin/white balance. Also, on that second one you maybe should have cranked the ISO up to say 500 or so to give you a better SS...the 30d can certainly handle it :).

HEY 85MM folk
im considering gettin this lens with my 400D.
i was originally looking for a bit of telephotoness (as my 18-55 is not good enough for that type of thing) and ALSO my current lens (f3.5-4.5) is not giving me the lack of DOF i want. the 50mm f/1.4 looks awesome for getting that bluryness but i dont want another 50mm lens i already got that...
would u guys recommend the 85mm f1.8 for that purpose ? will it still have good lack of dof with my 400D? or is it a full frame pro camera sort of thing? also how does it compare to the 100mm f2.0?? i have no idea what level of zoom these lenses achieve

THANKS GUYS

davo_robbo

hey :)
the 85mm is great on a 400D as well as being great on a 5D
as for focal legnth, i find the 50mm a much more 'appropriate' focal length for portraits

the 50mm 1.4 will give you incredibly different results than the kit lens..

for a general use portrait lens on the 400D i'd look at the sigma 30mm 1.4 or the canon 28mm 1.8, both are about a 50mm equivalent on a full frame camera

your next step would be the 85mm. i have a 17-50 and a 50 1.8 and wanted something with more reach after selling off a 70-200, i missed that. 85 is great for portraits. the 50 1.4 wont get you the shallow dof unless you are fairly close to the subject.

cool thanks for the help
today someone told me that if i were to get an ef 50mm for my 400d it would be pretty much like having a 85mm lens, because of the smaller image sensor in the 400d. does that mean if i set my ef-S 18-55mm to 50mm it will be appear different than a ef 50mm? does the S in EF-S mean its calibrated for smaller sensors or something???? anywho if that were true how do i calculate or quantify in some way how a normal ef 50mm (not efs) would frame a shot on my 400d???

EF 50mm is exactly the same as an EF-S 50mm lens on a crop body. The smaller sensor of the 400D (1.6x) will change the field of view for both EF and EF-S lenses, 50mm will have a field of view of 80mm compared to a Full Frame 35mm sensor.

So if you like using the 85mm on a full frame camera you will like using 50mm on the crop camera.

Just to verify EF-S is just a mount type that is optimised for crop camera's, the mm of a lens is no different to that of an EF lens.

Hope that makes sens and anyone correct me i I'm wrong!

These are a couple of recent photos taken with the 85 f/1.8 lens. I
use the Canon XTi and I always come back to this lens for its low light
shooting capabilities. You will loose one stop with the 100 f/2.0 but
you gain a bit of reach. The 85 seldom disappoints me!

Just the first shot I took of one of my new pet quails. :D

They were from a market...£2 for a pair, no one wanted them, my dad felt sorry for them so now we own them and they are living happily in an aviary with some canaries and zebra finches. :)

Yet to be named, so feel free to make suggestions. :P

And let me know if you like the shot, I think the DoF is possibly too narrow here, I just shot wide open as the light wasn't very good, and was handheld. :)

Chicken feed was about $.35 a month for the first couple of months and then about $$.60 or $.70 a month as the chicks matured. Once the cost of the feed got to that point -- SUNDAY DINNER, BABEE!
