View Full Version : Pics to tell the story

Just goes to show that in shooting football not always the best technical pic is the one used or the best action pic for that
its all about telling the story

On saturday I had a few good action captures that were submitted to several papers

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v280/paperpics/IMG_6286Medium.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v280/paperpics/IMG_6448Medium.jpg

but none of the above made any papers at all
the following pics that are the ones that were picked and used

The keeper brought down the forward for a penalty on the edge of the box I was caught out and by the time I had turned the zoom on the sigma from 300 to 120 I Just missed the actual contact but got this and it was used in a local paper
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v280/paperpics/OVD_loch_bath_AW3Medium.jpg

the penalty was scored but the players ran away from me to celebrate so got nothing there
The home team got a penalty in the second half
This was used by a local paper in their area
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v280/paperpics/loch_bath_aw2Medium.jpg

Then came the telling moment at 1-1 in the last minute the visiting team had a shot punched over the bar by a defender giving the a penalty
This was used by both local papers as the it tells the defining moment of the match
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v280/paperpics/OVD_loch_bath_AW1Medium.jpg

They Scored this was used by the local paper of the team who scored
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v280/paperpics/OVD_loch_bath_AW4Medium.jpg

as was this of the manager clearly relieved

I have learned that you can try as hard as you can to get the great peak action tackles and headers every week but its usually the boring shots that get used

I was just telling someone that I am going to start taking the boring and easy shots of players this summer doing absolutely nothing like standing there during stretching because that's what seems to get published and used on cards instead of the action photos I get. Good example, in the most recent BA they had a photo of a guy drinking water in the dugout instead of the action ones I got of him. Sure glad I got that water shot!!

Very interesting thread saggy.

'Newsworthy' pics are generally a different kettle-o-fish to the peak action stuff...

As you say it's more about illustrating the scribe's story rather than showcasing the tog's work.

The editor at one paper I submit to flatly refuses to use celebration pics  and I get roasted every time I submit one, no matter how spectacular it is. As far as he is concerned they are 'ten a penny'. He did, however, use this "Mine's a Pint" one because it fitted the story perfectly: The losing team's manager had previously accused the winning side of being a 'pub team'!

Another paper that I do occasional jobs for functions in completely the opposite way... to the extent that they have on occasion phoned me up asking for the cele pics if I haven't sent any!

Sometimes of course the photo influences the story itself. This recent cutting illustrates that fact (excuse the repost).... the image reveals that one of the goals was an own-goal and was incorrectly credited to one of the home players!

It's all good fun. We wouldn't have it any other way ;)

Yep, I got quite a few action shots at thurrock last week but the gazette chose to use 1 action shot and one of the 2 new players coming on as subs... nice to get 2 used, they normally only take one.

Of course it also helps when the paper get the story right in the captions. In the cutting Gavin posted the caption lists the own goal as the second for Thurrock, yet the box below shows it was in the 84th minute and was in fact the third goal. I think they should let you write the captions Gavin - yours are always much more entertaining :)

The gazette had a slip up this week as well, at the back they post all the league tables and put the local teams in bold, for some reason this week they made york bold and not grays, they are next to each other in the table so i guess its just a slip up.

Nice one Spencer! I'll be in Grays tomorrow as I'm dropping off some collages at the club, I'll make a point of picking up a copy of the Gazette on my travels.

Here's Dagenham's second (yep, second, honest) goal of the night:

Wonder if that'll make the back page of tomorrow's paper?

Andrew: Sorry to hijack your thread! Hope we're still on topic!

Yep apologies, I keep hijacking threads, just give me a kick ;) sorry again... it looks like the east thurrock game could be off, waterlogged pitch so i might be at thurrock v weymouth, hopefully seeing them getting a win at last... ok, back on topic ;)

It'll be tough for Thurrock though as the Terras are flying high - but they must be due a win!

Just to get back vaguely on topic ;) ... just had a quick look at the Lochee United website:

"20.02.2006 Lochee went out the Scottish Cup on Saturday losing 2 -1 at Thomson Park to Bathgate Thistle. In a very competitve (sic) match Lochee lost out to an injury time penalty" ...as illustrated above ;)
