This may seem like a weird post but im just wondering... I was just reading an article in a ski magazine about a ski photographer and he was talking at the end about how his photo equipment cost more then his car! I was really shocked but I guess if hes that much into it.

My question is, is there anyone here who is in the same boat as him, or even close to him? Just never relized how much money it cost to be a photograher haha.

Theres probably tons of people who have more invested in bodies and lenses than any single car they own, sure. :P

yep.. actually my cousin sold a car for less than what's in my camera bag.. he thought that it was hilarious and couldn't understand spending soo much money on something soo small.. it's all a matter of priorities and perspective. Besides, a car is only a means to get to the place where you take the picture...

I almost all the cars I own are worth less than whats in my camera bag. Except for two, the 1996 RX-7 3 Rotor, and the 1968 Charger R/T 426Hemi. I bought the RX-7 New, but the charger was my 18th b-day present from my grandfather, who bought the car new for about $4000.

I shoot with an A80, which is my second camera after my A40 got stolen, all up both cameras have cost me just over NZ$2,000.
My current car I bought with what was left over from the insurance after my last car was written off (women driver) and cost me NZ$2,000.

However, I have in the past spent several times more than that on all the cars I have ever owned, I would guestimate around NZ$30,000 all up.

Depends on the car's value. Both of mine are old and virtually worthless. One is a 1977 Oldsmobile Cutlass that I can't afford to restore (camera gear! lol) and the other is just a plain ol' Ford Aerostar minivan. One XT body costs more than they're worth. heh.

Hoever, my equipment could be sold and a fairly new compact car could be purchased with the proceeds...but I'm not stupid enough to do that!

I would have to agree that my camera gear is worth more then my 92 Bronco with over 215,000 miles. But I will never get rid of my Bronco, I love it and it still runs perfectly.

I paid $3,100.00 for my Dodge Caravan. It was the wife's company car and, when the lease was up, it was offered to us for sale.

I've got far more than that tied up in photo gear...

My photo gear is probably worth more than my firebird right now, but worth less than my truck. I'm working to surpass the truck...

Mmm... if your camera gear is worth more than your car then you have a serious problem.

There is a simple solution. BUY A BETTER CAR.

I'm in the same situation, my camera gear is worth more than my car.... but I still don't see the problem!

Maybe the problem is not with my car, but with me? :D

It doesn't take long for the camera gear to add up to more than the car. Especially if you shoot with 1Ds bodies. That's $15,000 right off the bat without even having any lenses.

We can't all be driving Porsches you know. And the value of a vehicle doesn't say anything about its reliability. My van looks like crap but it's reliable as can be and I like it. No one would ever imagine that crappy looking van has expensive gear in it.

It's a lot easier to save and get a thousand dollar lens here and a 2 thousand dollar lens there than it is to get approval on a loan for a 90 thousand dollar car when you don't have the salary to back it up. It's not like we all went to the mall and stood at the entrance with 90 grand in out pockets and said "hmmmm...should I buy a car today, or all the equipment I could ever want?"

why is it a problem?? Have we forgotten how much cars depreciate in value, there's no point in buying something for thiry grand today when it's going to be worth fifteen tomorrow..
Besides, a car is pretty simple, 4 wheels, and engine, a stereo (must have) and a place to sit in between taking shots :D .. Don't need to spend a lot of money on that, in my opinion not that very big of a deal.... now, camera and glass that's what's really important :D :D

Car 1 - About £500

Car 2 - About £700

Camera Gear - About £2500

So my gar costs more than both my cars, but given that I am happy to drive an old banger. As long as it gets me from A-B

My gear is worth more than my previous four cars each cost when new. Not so with my current car, though. It's still worth more than the camera gear.
