Sorry if this is a dumb or too frequently asked question. But I keep seeing then in sigs on this board. So what does a kit lens refer to? Just curious.

the 18-55mm ef-s lens that comes as part of the camera+lens kit offered by canon with the rebels and the 20d.

A kit lens is a lens that you can buy that's pre-packaged with the camera.
Like the 18-55 that you can buy with the 350D/20D/30D.

Mine came with the 18-55. I think its a 5.6. Works well outside in good light...
