I am trying to create a Video CD for video files I have created with my Canon S30 Camera. To do this, the AVI files created by the S30 must be converted to Video CD (.vcd file type) format. I have found a utility called AVI-VCD and installed it, but when I run it get an error message "cannot find codec for AVI file". Has anyone successfully done this, i.e. converted a Canon AVI file to VCD format? Is there a codec that I need to install? If so, what is it and where is it? Is there some other utility other that AVI-VCD that would be better for the conversion? Windows Media Player is unable to read the Canon AVI file also and gives the message "unable to download an appropriate decompressor". Apple QuickTime is able to play the file but it isn't able to create VCD files. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My kids have a ball making video CD's of themselves skateboarding and surfing using AVI clips from the Pro90IS. It did take some time to find the right software though - I still haven't found one program that will do it all ie. AVI to VCD. So here's what we do. Firstly download Windows Moviemaker 5.1 from Microsoft and load it on to XP. Next load your AVI sequences into Moviemaker (the kids find this the most user friendly) and construct the movie. Save it to file. Open TEMPGEnc 2.5 (from www.pegasys-inc.com) and convert the file to MPEG. Save this file and then load it into Nero and select other format/video CD and then burn. Works a charm in the DVD player. I have also noted a marked improvement in quality by using this process over and above Quicktime and other converters available as shareware such as VCDEasy, avi2vcd, Videdit and Picture to TV.
Good luck

How do you edit the video and then save it in a format the camera will replay?

Can't help there. My Pro90IS does not allow you to upload AVI images from the computer! Can anyone else help here as I have often wondered why you cannot do this.

Could we have some more details please - like how? format(s) used? A good place top get the software from? Does this software build a .THM file the A70 can use?

Nero Express can be download from www.ahead.com. It is able to take the canon AVI files directly, convert on the fly to MPEG and burn VCDs.
Similarly ulead DVD pictureshow 2 can take canon AVI directly to burn VCDs. You can download demo or purchase from www.ulead.com .
Hope this helps.
