It's been a while since Lethal Weapon, so maybe a 50D with a 50 1.4 would be more realistic.... :)
Ok, maybe I should just get the 7D and keep my little lenses;)
More pics............bored yet again, light was looking good on the sunporch so I tried some still life snap shots.

Once I got the sigma 30/1.4, 24-70/2.8 was useless. So I sold it and it was the right decision. No regrets at all.

Me too. f1.4 is about 100x more useful than a "slow" zoom. :)

I have both, and I use the Sigma 30 way more than the Canon 50. Getting better result hands down (not that the 50 is bad or anything - it's still good)

I have both (just traded my canon 50 1.4 for the sigma 30 1.4 TODAY) the sigma 30 and 17-55.
The 17-55 is a great lens, and the sigma 30 is really nice as well :)

I'm switching from 5d to 7d, which lens would you guys prefer on a crop? I have the sigma 50 1.4 and am debating switching it out for the 30. I would have to say that the 30 seems to have less focusing issues, and from the pictures, it appears sharper.

I have used the 17-55 for a weekend when I shot a wedding, indeed it was good. While I had it that weekend I also shot a band and at ISO1600 is worked as well at my 85mm f/1.8 (was shooting with one on each camera). My 24-60 f/2.8 is a good lens, not quite as sharp as the 17-55 but still good, too bad Sigma doesn't have anything comparable with OS.
Mike (the guy I'm borrowing the 30mm) said he doesn't use his Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 as much since getting the 30mm. I'm surprised he let me borrow it while he is going on vacation! lol
I gotta say the 30mm balances perfect on my non-gripped 30D. Feels good in the hands. :)

I've never used a 5D or the Sigma 50mm, but my nifty mounted to my 35mm film camera appears to have very close FOV as the 30mm mounted on my 30D. I've never liked the 50mm f/1.8 (this is the second time I bought one.. traded actually) and I plan on selling it. I just find it a bit too long at times and not wide enough. the 30mm seems very "natural" on the cropper. :)

If you like the FOV of the 50mm on your 5D, then buy the 30mm for your 7D. If I ever move to full-frame, I'm going to pick up the 50mm since I love my 30mm so much on my current bodies.

This has become my most used lens. In fact, in the last few months I used it for more than 50% of my shots.
A practical tip: If you have a 58mm polarizer lying around, just buy a cheap 62->58 stepdown-ring. It won't vignette, so no need to buy a seperate 62mm filter for this lens.

It's not an L: Distortions and CA could be a bit better, colors could be a bit more neutral, focus ring could be a bit smoother, but most importantly: THE RING AROUND THE FRONT OF THE LENS HAS THE WRONG COLOR! ;) :D

I guess I'm an odd duck since I own both.
The Sigma 30mm is good. I do find that the 35L locks on focus perfectly regardless of any distance.
My Sigma 30mm works great indoors at home (perfect with no front/back focus) but if I start taking photos outdoors its not as rock solid in the AF department as my 35L. The sigma does some sketchy oof shots once in a while.
I'm scared that if I get it calibrated its gonna get screwed up by Sigma.

Great shots everyone. I am really considering this lens. On a 1.6 crop, would this be a good "walk around prime"? I almost never use my 50 f1.8 because I feel its too narrow for the things I want to shooot with it. It seems like it would fit in well with my other lenses (in my sig). All advice is greatly appritiated. The other lens I'm considering is the 17-40 f4L.

Yes, perfect walk around prime. With the 1.6 crop factor 30mm replicates the classic normal prime that was the standard "kit lens" for about 30 years on SLR cameras.

On my EP-1 via an adapter. A lens is a lens right! (Still waiting for my 7D). All wide open as thats what you end up using with any EOS lens on body that doesn't speak eos. I posted these in the EP1 thread as well. Not sure if that is frowned upon ? I love the sharpness on this lens. I bought it for my 7D as I loved the Sigma 50 on the 5D2. My copy has turned out to be superb wide open. Gotta see how AF works once the 7D comes in.

I would love to see the 30mm used on the new 7D since people claim that camera has a "film like" look to it- and when I used the 30mm for a week it was the most "film like" lens that I've ever used.

I want to see if the 7D AF works with the 30mm. People are always feamongering about sigma-canon interaction and I imagine ppl want to be absolutely sure it works properly before pairing the two.
Anyone tried this combo?

Thanks Paulius! I think the complaints about this lens (particularly autofocus) are overstated. I've never had any focusing problems with this lens, and this is on my Rebel XT (not known for great autofocus!). I bought my lens here on POTN - if you can get a good used copy from someone you can trust here, go for it!

the 30 1.4 (and really, this applies to any really fast lenses) has a really thin depth of field... if you're close to your subject with this one (you usually do end up being really close with this one) there's only a really small "in focus" margin, it doesn't take much for what you want in focus to be out of focus.
All it is... a learning curve... some people immediately assume "It's a Sigma, it's known to happen" when it often isn't the issue. And yes, there are lenses out there that do need to be re-touched by Sigma, but I think that's overblown in general

After going back and fourth with either my lens being amazing or seeming to back/front focus, it really just seems to shoot off every once in awhile.
Took a self portrait using a rf transmitter, as you can see the focus was spot on when shot wide open.

Thanks. The interesting thing about this photo is that last year, around this time I had a 35L and went to the same spot with the same model (my wife) and took the same type shot (she loved it, it was her favorite) and wanted to see if I can duplicate it to some extend with my current SIGMA 30. This can't be an accurate comparison between the 35L and the SIGMA 30 but here's the 35L from last year:

Nice comparison - Just goes to show how little there is between the 35L and Sig 30 other than full frame coverage and a $1000. :)
Here's one from tonight. Not too impressive, but I was proud of the Sigma for nailing focus on the foot like this in AI-servo - especially on a rebel XS. I had 3 in a row like this and it nailed all 3 right on. My 55-250 couldn't even catch the whole kid in focus at f8! :)

It focuses just fine with the 7D. I find this somewhat sharper than the Sigma 50 I used to have on the 5DII.
I am having a different issue that while the center focus point is simply superb, the extreme left/right ones render fuzzy images. Differently fuzzy (left AF point more OOF than the right) so I think my 7D has been knocked a bit in transport and might need some realignment. It is going back to canon for some TLC.

Because 50mm is $100. Makes it easier to buy.
