A couple of my friends before going to a halloween party. The bounce flash was not working to well for me on this occasion.

A little underexposed they could have done with a little more fill flash to my eyes. EDIT: Oops! I missed what you wrote. Yeah you noticed it too. You can always try using the fill light tool in Lightroom if you have it.

Thanks for the retouch. The flash in that room was really giving me problems. I know they're not the best photos but I think they're pretty funny.

If you think you have focus issues, remember that 1.4 is very thin DOF
give it a good chance! And have a good weekend...

right on. I will put it through the tests though as I have heard of some focus issues with this lens. Granted some of those can be attributed to lack of knowledge about DOF like you say but nonetheless.

Thank you very much! I work on a lot of student film sets shooting Behind-the-scenes stills, and have enjoyed the low-light capabilities of this prime lens immensely. I am also a sucker for sharp, thin DOF.
Give the lens a chance :) On my last shoot, I forced myself to use only the 30mm. Results were superb, in my eyes. I might post some samples.

I am seriously considering this lens for my low light glass on an upcomng trip to China. I especially want to do a lot of shooting in the night markets and believe that this lens might be the right choice.
I had a 28mm f/1.8 Sigma and I liked the focal length quite well on a 1.6x crop camera. However, like many older Sigmas, this lens will not work with any camera newer than a 10D and my 10D really doen't have the high ISO performance of my 40D.
My question is: How long is the average turn around at the Sigma service center? I am expecting to leave for China at the end of March. Would that be enough time for a couple of trips to the Sigma sevice center is necessary?

I would think easily by march, but likely you will not need any adjustments. The 30s are not as bad as the 50s for AF issues.

That's good to hear. I ordered a 30 and it should arrive tomorrow. The last time I owned the lens I bought it used and didn't have to worry about sending it in. The previous owner had gone through three copies. I sent a sigma 50 in about 10 months ago and had it back in a week, but lately it seems from what others are reporting, it is taking longer now.

OK got the Sigma 30 last night and maybe I am doing something wrong but it appears to be front focusing to me. I took this series of pictures to do two things check the focus and see where my sharpest AV was here is what I got, these are straight conversions from RAW to JPG in DPP nothing else done to them.
So in the pictures below I used single point focus and focused on the third ball in the center row, at 1.4 you can clearly see the lens focused on the second ball in the center row. My question do you see the same thing and if so how do I fix it?
I also derived from this that I should be able to take some pretty nice portraits at 2.8 because the DOF should be sufficient for a face and it appears really sharp. Am I right or am I looking at it wrong?
Thanks so much.

sconner69 those shots definitely show how some cameras overexpose at F1.4 with this lens. Typically you need to use -1/3 or more EC at that aperture. YMMV obviously.

Definitely looks like its front focusing. After inspection, mine is doing the same thing. You can see it in the first post on this page. My wife's hand is in focus while my daughters eyes are a bit soft. A +20 micro adjust got mine close. Since your camera doesn't have micro adjust, your options are to exchange it or send it in to Sigma for adjustment. I'd send it directly to CRIS in Arizona. You can get their info from Sigma. I'll be sending mine in after the holidays. Micro adjust made it so its usable, and there are conflicting reports on how long CRIS is taking to perform work lately.

Dick,
The overexposure in pic one was my fault, shutter too slow. But it still shows what I was afraid of, front focussing.
Jeff,
I will have to check on Sigma's site and see what I come up with, I do not want to be with out this lens through the holidays also, so I am going to try and keep the AV up so that it is in focus on the whole face.
Thanks for looking and giving your opinions.

Spend 1000 bucks and forget about it and in the end you don't have to scratch your head and say, what the hell happen to this pic?
Yes, this lens ruin some of my reunion pics. I should've read the reviews about the focus issue before taking this lens to that reunion. I bet the 30 f/2 would have satisfied me more that night even at f/2.0.

I came back to the SIGMA from a 35L. Used it for 3-4 months so I know how well the 35L can focus. If your lens works well, it is just as good. Don't knock it just because YOU have a bad copy. It happens, fix it and move on. Or sell it, whatever ...

sigma is sharp and the focus issue is fixable. What I dislike about sigma lenses in general is brownish cast to color, it makes the hues flat and dull, you can always try to fix stuf in PP but it will never be close to canon prime lenses - especially 35l. I looked at tons of pictures taken with 30 1.4 and yes it is a bright lens - but thats all. Just my opinion.

It's also a bright lens that is sharp wide open, has fast AF and great bokeh.
You are entitled to your opinion on the color, but I think you are in small company. I, for one, am blown away by the great color and contrast of the Sigma 30. My pictures are not flat, dull, or brown.
Looking at the controlled tests between the L and the Sigma, I don't see what you are talking about: http://www.pbase.com/lightrules/30v35_2nd

Yes I had a bad copy and I'm pretty sure more bad copies are out there than good ones. Don't get me wrong, I like the size of the Sigma and its perfect for my XSi and I just wish I'm lucky like you to get a very rare good copy. As far as the 35L, the only complain I hear over at their forum is the high price so I assumed its got focus spot on.

I looked back and forth between the 35L and Sigma thread and the pics of the 35L just look amazing. The Sigma shots are sharp, but just doesn't have the amazing or pop or wow look. The color is too warm and the bokeh is harsh. I'm sorry maybe my eyes just like the 35L shots more

I looked back and forth between the 35L and Sigma thread and the pics of the 35L just look amazing. The Sigma shots are sharp, but just doesn't have the amazing or pop or wow look. The color is too warm and the bokeh is harsh. I'm sorry maybe my eyes just like the 35L shots more
You are probably noticing the shots from the full frame cameras. IT has a totally different perspective and DOF on FF.

Spend 1000 bucks and forget about it and in the end you don't have to scratch your head and say, what the hell happen to this pic?
Ricky,
Some of us don't have the extra $1000 and this lens make a viable substitute for the L
So I got one that front focuses, I have simply been focusing on the neck instead of the eyes, then recomposing. that will work (actually works quite well) until after Christmas and I will send it in to have it recalibrated.

The one I own now is my fourth SIGMA 30. Trust me, I know all about that. I can also tell you that I've tried it on another body, a 30D. And while focusing perfectly on mine, the same lens performs poorly on that 30D. Seems, at the factory, the lens gets calibrated for a certain body type and works with only it. Thats why when you send your lens to SIGMA for calibration, they insist on getting your body with it as well. It is a PITA lens for sure, but I still prefer it over the 35L - more specifically, the color rendition.

I don't have that extra money either and that's why I bought the Sigma in the first place. It turned out to be a disaster though. I know you can get it recalibrate, but its not always guarantee it'll be corrected. It's just a hassle and an insult to buyers like me knowing Sigma knows the problem, but never bothered to fix it in the first place. What's the point of saving money if you're not happy? The Sigma is an outstanding (price, sharpness and weight) lens IF Sigma can fix the problem.

What version of DPP are you using? I have 3.7.2 and it shows the AF points. Maybe you need to update?
All the AF points show as black if you use manual focus. When you use auto focus, the selected point(s) turn red.
(AF points are nothing to do with the lens, it's a body thing)

A new version? Right, I just updated to see if anything changed, but alas. Apparently when I have all focus points selected (fast moving children, so AI servo), they all end up red in DPP. When I manually select a focus points, all are black.
I once downloaded someone's raw file for some reason of a shot made with a Canon lens, and it worked just fine for that one. It just doesn't want to show the selected focus point when using Sigma lenses.
Btw, as I used this lens again this afternoon, in a pretty dark room, focus was spot on every single shot. Except when the little kids were too fast to keep up with, but that's not a lens problem . Just amazing. I would not get such results on my 400D, that's for sure.
Swann1

I just did some testing with my 40D/Sigma 17-70 and found:
One-Shot AF
Manually select AF point - only that one lights up red in DPP
Automatically select AF point - only the ones that achieve focus light up red in DPP
AI Servo AF
Manually select AF point - only that one lights up red in DPP
Automatically select AF point - all points light up red in DPP
Manual Focus
All points are black, regardless of whether you use Manual or Automatic AF point selection.
As I said, it's the body not the lens.

I don't why the AF point overlay in DPP is useful anyway. All it shows is which AF point you used. It doesn't tell you if the subject moved, or you swayed, or you recomposed, etc. So it is really useless for diagnosing Focus errors. You have no way of ruling out user errors in between focusing.

I don't think so. Nobody (including Sigma) has any info about a version 2 of this lens. You might have just seen the lens in a different mount. The Sony And Pentax mount versions came out a little later than the Canon and NIkon and look just a little bit different.

Thanks. I really do wish that at least there was some mention of the aperture it was shot at. I, for instance (and I'm talking specifically about me), would like to see how the lens holds up wide open rather than stopped down.
If stopped down, might as well use my kit lens :-)

Yes, I agree about the mention of aperture when posting shots...although if you have an exif viewer plug-in installed (Firefox) you can tell in 2 clicks anyway!
However, shooting wide open is not the only benefit of this lens. The colours, contrast sharpness, and obviously the bokeh are far superior, not to mention the HSM and FTM.
If I had to choose between the kit lens (presuming that you are talking about the 18-55) and the Siggy at the 30mm setting, I'd choose the Sigma without hesitation, even stopped down. And I say that even though I don't have a bad kit lens, quite the opposite - I've had some fantastic shots with it.

Yeah, but you are going to have to stop down a LOT to lose the advantage this lens gives you over the kit lens.

If you ONLY shoot stopped down, yeah. It is nice to be able to shoot razor sharp shots at f5.6 outside and then walk inside and shoot nice sharp ones at f1.4-2.8.

Nice photos. when I borrowed my friend's copy I found the lens had a "natural" look to it, not razor sharp like my 85mm or even 70-200 f/4L, but still sharp enough wide open that I found the images to be pleasant to look at.

Line some identical items up and focus on one of the items and see which one is actually in focus. I used golf balls, some others have used batteries, buttons, any thing relatively small so you can see that it is focusing spot on and not front focusing like a large percentage do.

It is just because it hasn't blurred it enough. Pretty much any lens would do the same because it is only slightly blurred and there are still some sharp edges.

This was just a test shot for my new 20° grid so i don't really care for it anyways as it should of had one more light in it. the background was just a black sheet that had wrinkles in it and i can't even believe i took the time to edit those out.

Well, it's pretty much a simple curves adjustment, but as another post has mentioned, there is also a WB issue that needs correcting on the raw image.
If this is your test shot, with a "test" model...I really look forward to the real shoot - it's gonna look fantastic! And I agree, the lens is excellent in low light...I just got to get it out again and use it!

I like that last one (the original) the edit from CBokeh is very nice too but a bit over saturated. But it could look slightly different on a different calibrated monitor. :)
Very nice shot !

I bought this lens for indoor shots (Family gatherings, musuem, etc.. w/ a nice BOKEH!) My next plan is to get a 17-40L for outdoor shooting. (Will be using 20mm to 40 mm). Do you think this is redundant? The Sigma prime can still do a decent outdoor shots right? Or should I just get a 50mm prime next for reach? Possibly, a 50mm f1.4 .

Yes I do think it's redundant. Personally I don't understand why people get the 17-40 for crop bodies. Yeah it's sharp and has good colors, but I don't think there would be a huge difference over the 18-55IS kit lens for outdoor stuff. Why not look for an ultra wide, or at least a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 so you can use it for low light as well?

Man, what a view. I'd love to have a Hasselblad.

You might get more use out of it right now during the crappy winter months. ;) I like my UWA but it really only sees use in summer.

I really think that this lens is much better than any UWA.

I'm finally giving in and going full-frame (5Dmk2), so I'm giving this lens away with the 40D. It's been an amazing lens, but I suppose the 50mm f/1.4 Siggy will replace it on the 5D. (that's another fantastic Sigma!)
I've realized that I need to be able to get wider than my 16-35mm shows on the 40D, but I've loved the all-around usefulness of the 30mm. It was my first prime and my first wide-aperture lens. From the minute I started using the 30mm, I sold my high-aperture lenses and started taking a lot more natural-light shots. Love this lens!

^^^^ agreed... you do have a point there... will think about it for sure.

I just bought this lens!
I did a few handheld shots and I think it's a bit backfocusing on my 40D.
I have to do a serious test on tripod to see it's bad backfocusing orspot on.
But I'm very pleased with the speed of this lens! And the build is also great!

hey everyone, I'm about to buy this lens for my XS. Only place its in stock is amazon, which is through J&R. Is this reputable enough? Just being careful because of all the quality issues with this lens. For some reason the canon version is out of stock at B&H and Adorama.

Yes J&R is a legit store. They are located in City Hall in New York City, they own a whole city block down there. I picked up my 50mm f1.8 II there last summer, and my friend has bought his 7D from them. I go there when things in adorama or bandh are sold out. J&R is closer to me location wise, but I just like shopping at adorama much more than the other two.

I love this lens, just got it a few days ago. Here's one SOOC (RAW>JPEG, white balance adjustment only), @ f1.4, 1/40, ISO 400:

I just my copy of this lens and I really like it. This lens just took the place of my 17-40mm as my new walk around lens. The f/1.4 is really fun to play with and can change the whole feeling of the shot where the 4.0 would have lost out.
One thing I don't like is the click/lock of the hood onto the lens as compared to Canon. It feels like the hood is barely holding on.
The other thing is that is is not supported in my 7D under lens option to help with the vignetting. Only Canaon lens are. I don't know how much of an importance this is as I don't think I would like to replace the 30MM with a 28mm or 35mm Canon as they don't seem as robust in build. This 30mm looks robust on my 7D, ok not like my 70-200 2.8 IS but makes my 50 Nifty look like a toy you find in a Kellogs box.
I would recomend this Sigma to everyone. I find 30mm the perfect focal length for any crop sensor camera.
Thx
