Lol he was stiff cause the jacket was riding up his neck plus it was windy!
He hates wearing his winter jacket.
We got him a real nice snowsuit as well which he only wore for 15 mins total!
The poor soul didn't move when he had it on and it was such a sin to see him like that so we took it off!

It happens with many lenses that are able to open up as wide as f2 and bigger.

No it is the lens itself. The Siggy 50mm f/1.4 focuses better in the dark than the 30mm.

Hi guys (and girls !) !

I've had last week a Sigma 30mm f1.4. Great lens, but I think it suffers of front focus (used with a Canon 500D/T1i)...

Here, focus on the L of Silva:
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_woGuR3g2rgc/S6-9NTWYTgI/AAAAAAAAHqs/6YSWcu71GSw/s800/IMG_2003.JPG

We can easily see that's it's not correctly focused...

However some can be quite good :
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_woGuR3g2rgc/S6-9MID-AwI/AAAAAAAAHqg/8EY5bApGhr4/s800/IMG_2002.JPG

Both picture are taken @ f1.4, 1/4000 s, ISO 100.

It's like it happens only when I'm doing a "macro-like" shot, I mean when I really want to shoot a particular zone. I did some chart tests and I tried to shoot my computer's screen (desktop) and in both case the focus was on another line/icon before my focus point, but I can't say those tests were done in good conditions...

Can you please advise me if that's a user mistake (quite a newbie here) or if my lens really have a problem ?

Thanks !

When you're closer in your depth of field is super tiny. Your issue may just be from the difficulty of using 1.4 in close range

So if I try at f5.6 for example it should be well/better focused ?

EDIT: I read some article about DOF, large aperture, etc... I think I understand better how it works now, I'll try to do further tests.

SamHunter
29th of March 2010 (Mon), 11:52
Well not even 5.6.

For my hot chocolate one above, I tried it at 1.4 and once you focus on something close, if you move just an inch its gonna be out of focus. So I went to 2.2 and its super sharp

Around 50-60 cm.

I redid some tests yesterday (unfortunately I don't have the pics here), like putting an object in diagonal (a little donkey plush, one part closer to me than the other), focusing on the farthest part (head): the closest (tail) is on focus :(

I think it's going back to the shop in order to being repaired/changed. That's a shame when there's no way of testing lenses first.

Are you shooting on a crop or ff?

According to EXIF data he is shooting on crop (20D). This lens would give pretty big vignette on a full frame body as it is designed for apsc bodies, although... i saw quite good samples taken with 1D, so when stopped down it can serve APS-H as well. ;]

omg - gorgeous doggy gorgeous photo!

this lens is pretty incredible for what it is :D

thanks and yeah for the price it can't be beat. Though I am selling mine soon to pick up a 35L. The sigma is great and all but I need to start building my lens lineup to accommodate a FF camera as well.

I just got my lens. Considering my only prime in the past was a Canon 50mm F1.8. While i do love it, it does feel a little too soft at times at 1.4. This is normal though right?

At 1.4. A little soft of the edges of the face.

That might not be softness, but shallow depth of field. The edges of the face aren't on the same plane as the nose/center of the face. If you focused on the center of the face at f/1.4, you should expect subjects in front of/behind that plane to be more out of focus.

Read a few, can't remember any specific ones to point you to - But the general consensus was that this lens was miles better and even came close to the 35mm F/1.4 -- I think it'd be in the same ball park, not as close as most say though.

Buy new. You can exchange it at the store or send it back to Sigma if you have any troubles with it.

I would suggest buying used, someone has already tried it and will tell u about issues. I did the same, mine was like new/in box and had no focus issues and i saved £150

Mine just flew today to the store, I hope its front focus problem will be solved, because I can have some pretty good results with it, I'm amazed by this lens. It'll be even better when it'll focus right where it should :D

Honestly, it worths it. If you can, test it directly in the shop and find a good copy.

I was a bit worried about focus issues when I was buying this lens, but mine came perfect for my T1i and its my most used lens (that doesn't say too much 'cause I currently only have 2 buuut).

Sharpness is SICKENING! I was have small buyer's remorse, wondering if I should've bought a zoom in the general purpose range instead of a prime. But after using it at a theater performance, I know that the 1.4 comes in handy.

I posted 2 shots with crops just to illustrate how sickenly sharp this thing is. Tripod mounted. First crop is f2.8, then its f4.

Hi XxDJCyberLoverxX

For the most part, in Lightroom, I significantly decreased the vibrance and saturation. And boosted the recovery, fill light, blacks, brightness, and contrast. I did a few other small things, but that was the main part.

Thank you for commenting :D

A polarising filter?

I have a B&W polfilter. Problem is I rarely use it, because situations that require one usually involve a different focal length (wider mostly).

That said, any good 62mm polfilter should do I think. Nothing really specific for this lens.

A) nice light. Under crappy indoor lightbulbs, everything looks soft. Open the blinds and let in a little sunlight.

B) Nail focus. With this lens and its fast aperture and shallow DOF you have to know exactly where you are focusing. If it is a person, always aim for the eyes - thats what people will look at. In your picture, you hit focus on the lips and hat, but not the eyes, so even though those are sharp, the picture looks soft. If it was the other way around and the eyes were sharp and the hat soft, everyone would think it was a sharp photo.

C) Don't always shoot at f1.4 just because you can. This lens gets crazy sharp at f2.8. If you have the option, I would shoot above f2. The focusing is easier if you stp down, too, because the DOF is thicker. The Sigma is probably one of the best lenses around at f1.4, but that doesn't mean it doesn't get better stopped down.

So by bumping up the f stop, you can get a faster focus with the Sigma when it's set at Auto focus?

With a smaller aperture, you have greater depth of field, so minor focus discrepancies are more forgiving.

If you have a bounce flash, I might use it, but not the pop up flash. Really I was just saying you won't get the "Wow that is sharp!" kind of shots without some nice light. You can still get good shots in low light (that is what f1.4 is for) but crummy light doesn't have the contrast to really make the shots pop. I still use mine all the time in low light, though.

For example:

Crummy light. This is technically a sharp shot and in focus, but the lighting was really poor, so it does not stand out. Still a good shot and with any other lens, I would have been in a tough spot.

http://i416.photobucket.com/albums/pp241/tkbslc/kids/IMG_2886.jpg

And then this one has some nice contrasty window light lighting it along with stopping down to f2.0. It looks a lot sharper mainly due to the contrast and nicer light.

I focused on the fruit the most at the back, the red one was in focus. It's clearly not a DOF issue as it not only a part of my fruit that's not in focus, that the whole fruit while another one in front of it is OK.

I did some tests with the Sigma @ f3.5 vs my Canon 18-55 IS from kit. Front focus wih the Sigma, not the Canon. Same aperture, same DOF, no ?

For the previous picture if we assume that the face of the kid was the main focus zone, it's a front focus issue, not DOF... And that was the exact same stuff that I had, front part of a hat nice, out of focus face.

I think a key attribute to shooting with 1.4 indoors too is using Manual. Av or P / Auto modes are never accurate in my opinion, at least in doors.
