How loud is the focusing and is it fairly fast to focus in low light? What is the build quality like?
I was looking for a lens under 400 that allows me to more of my subject in the frame. You see what I already have in my sig...I primarily shoot portraits, and occasional weddings. How does this compare to the canon 28.1.8? better / worse?

I have never used the canon, but the focusing is quiet, it seems pretty fast to me (even in low light), and the build quality is quite nice.

Thanks, I just realised there is a sigma 28.1.8 too, that I am interested in learning the comparisons about, so I made a new thread :D

cant compare it to the canon 28 as ive never used it. Apart from that it ticks all the boxes you mention except for quick focuising in low light

Woot! UPS just showed up with mine!

Any quick tests I can do to make sure that it's focusing spot on?

I do a lot of focus and recompose with my daughter, so there's a lot of room for user error there...

I have one arriving in the next day or 2 and I also do a lot of focus and recompose with people/children. I'll be watching to see how it goes for you. Good luck and congrats!

Focusing tests? Go out and shoot. When in doubt, then start testing. The good ol' focus chart should still be around. Alternatively you could do the infamous battery check (line up some batteries and test focus).

Couldn't be better as far as I can see. At least in this size.

Unless you misfocused and the kid accidentally moved into focus :p

I just got mine in the mail from jms803, a potn member. It's perfect :-) Here's the very first shot I took with no pp at all and the requisite battery shots to assure myself the focus is correct. I don't know how to save the picture with the red focus point box showing but when I pulled it up in zoom browser it showed the focus point on the 2 center batteries which is what I was going for. I did the calculator and yardstick test, too, although all were quick and handheld. It looks perfect every time so I see no need to pull out the tripod. I'm so happy to have this lens :-)

Do it!!!!!!! I've been on a prime kick lately as it's much easier to chase my toddler around with the Xsi+30mm than the 40D+24-70L. As an added bonus, the pictures come out MUCH better!

What i've noticed is that this lens has a very smooth - feminine rendering at large (f1.4-2.8 ) apertures. The pictures (RAW) are very eye pleasing, no high contrast just smooth and silky.

thank you so much, I just realized I could have looked at your flickr, but most people don't have it available there, haha. I see so many people shooting in Aperture-priority mode..it's making me feel silly staying in manual, but I am so comfortable there, lol. this lens is amazing, I love seeing other photographers' photos with it, showing me I made the right choice. I did not want another zoom lens. I am happy for everyone that let this thread influence them!

egordon - well i do it only when my studies let me...and now i have exams so not that much :D BUt street is very tricky - some days you get great shots, some days u come back with none...and it makes u feel awful! :D
7dame - hmm I can only say: stay in manual :D when i want something very special - only manual :) i shoot AV due to the lack of time, i just know when my camera under/over exposes and correct it. I will never sell this lens and i thank the person which sol it to me (a POTN member), the best decision i have made so far :)

I ordered mine on Saturday and i was delivered a few moments ago!
First few shots with it :) all at F1.4

Click pictures to see large and zoom for pixel peeping-exif is embedded

I may have miss focused the first one, its hard to tell (yeah i was pixel peeping) I think the shoulders are more focused, but I focused on the eyes, the eyes are softly drawn on, which is why its hard to tell! also there is CA from the back lighting.

slight sharpen and color adjust

Just wanted to chime in with a positive experience with Sigma service. I got my recalibrated 30 f/1.4 back from Ronkonkoma, NY today and it's focusing much much better. So far, out of 20 or so test shots under varying conditions, things are looking good. Turnaround was 2-1/2 weeks including shipping.

I'm happy.

congrats! yay our 'family' is getting bigger and bigger.

first time shooting an aquarium ...being in a doctors office has gotta be good for something!

omigosh they were fast, and there were a lot of fish that looked exactly alike.

Took it out with and used a friend to pose for me, wanted to really test it.

Camera: Canon EOS 40D
Exposure: 0.001 sec (1/1250)
Aperture: f/1.4

LARGE FOR PIXEL PEEPERS (http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4023/4643235951_6c247de62a_o.jpg)

The main thing I noticed that it really struggles to focus in very back lit situations.I was shooting at sunset so the low sun directly behind my friend while trying to get a full body shot was to much for this lens... That said it seems to be quick to focus in regular conditions and is quiet too :)

Skin cloning and eye dodge / burn. no sharpen.
This one was natural light with the new sigma.

That is a beautiful shot. Any estimate how close you were to the subject? Did you do some cropping or are you just very close? I'm trying to learn to use this lens more effectively. It's very sharp but when I look at results like yours on this thread it inspires me to get much better! Would love to know how you did this one. Thanks.

MRagon - thank you very much! I'm very pleased that you find my work interesting and even inspiring :)
Well because i had around 1.5 meters between me and wall and the model had to fit in that gap (!) i was around 0.5-0.7 meters all the time. I prefer a bit further away because if too close i could see the distortion... And yes to get a a head an shoulders you have to be very close, but it becomes very tricky to focus, i use autofocus, due to my rebel has crappy viewfinder....This shot is cropped but a small amount (abit of sides - better aspect ratio).
Hope this was of any use :)
Cheers,
Paulius

Thanks Paulius, that helps a lot. I have been too afraid of distortion to get that close but I can see I need to do some experimenting :-) Thanks for sharing the details.

Looking forward to this as my 1d should be arriving tomorrow, and I can't decide between the sigma 30, or canon 35, and couldn't find examples of how bad the vignette is on a 1.3 crop.

Can you post pics from 1.4, 2, 4, and 5.6? Or PM me when they're up on your flickr or someone. Thanks!

You know, there's a Sig 30 for sale here, specifically because it vignettes too much on a 1.3x. It does vignette, be sure of that, but even @ 1.4 it's very small and at the extreme corners. If you want to see some better samples, PM me your email address and be happy to send you some full size examples.

BTW, you'll love your 1d; the CCD is really something else. You will soon want a newer 1d. I caved in about 2 weeks. I'll miss my 1dc but I'm planning on exacting a right of first refusal if/when the new owner decides to sell it.

Do you use extension tubes?
For that photo I used a +4 close-up filter from eBay.

So sharp. Geeze, I think I'm going to have to go with this lens. Had one before, but never really used it and had to get rid of it when I was in a bind.

Got the lens back from Sigma this week, and have been enjoying it since.

I got the lens a couple of days ago and did some focus tests. It did great in all my simple battery/coin/random object tests so I went outside and looked around. For the image below, I focused on the red/white seed in the centre of the frame. Nice! No need to send mine in.

I have a hard time using mine inside in low light. If using 1.4 to 2.0 I get really mixed results, most of them are unusable. It hunts really bad and if I get locked in using the center focus they can still be oof. Do any of you have the same problem

Strangely enough, I have the idea that my version actually focuses better in low light than in bright...

anyone know where i can get a replacement hood?
