Here is a cover image I published on the net for Breguet. I was reporting on a Breguet cocktail here in Singapore. I used my trusty 30mm for the B&W photos.

I'm one that's also had problems getting sharp photos from mine. I wanted a second opinion so I took it in to see the guy at the camera store (who I bought my 20D from) and he looked at it for me. He also had problems getting sharp pictures from it. It definitely doesn't look as sharp as some of your pictures. Anyway, I'm sending it back and requesting an exchange for a different copy. Hopefully the next one will be a keeper. The build, focal length, and speed of focusing was great, so if I can get ahold of a good one, I think I will love it too.

It all depends on how close you are to the subject and where the focal point is. Yes 1.4 is VERY shallow. You can also bring some of the slightly OOF parts into focus with the right amount of sharpening.
Here is the EXIF:
PS: The DOF is on a plane. You can tilt that plane by tilting the lens angle...

Some shots of yonge street. I think I have better ones and did not pick the right ones out, these were quickly processed, I'll take a better look later. I'm going to go back to that spot and try shooting again. They were taken last night, and for some reason where I was standing was a spot that yelled out "come here and try to mug the kid". Heh, I'm lucky I was with my friend, or else I don't think I'd have my gear right now. 2 guys came up to me and began just standing there and thinking of taking my gear.

I have the Sigma 30mm and absolutely love using it. I enjoy it so much that it convinced me to buy the 35L! Now that I have gotten the L lens (about 1 month now), I have yet to decide whether to part with the 30mm or just keep it. I did a search online and found no comparison reviews of the two lenses. Instead the Siggy 30mm was often compared to slower lenses.
Personally so far I found the 35L at best 15% better than the Siggy in terms of sharpness at infinity, noise and colour. BUT its three times the cost and twice the size.
I bought the 35L because I wanted the lens on my next camera body which will be a Full Frame. Unfortunately I was told that the Siggy 30mm does not work with FF bodies. Has anyone tried this?
Thanks for reading.

Hi, I do not find the 35L long at all on my 20D. At just 5mm more than Sigma, I hardly notice it. Of course with the 1.6 Crop it seems larger and tad more than a standard but I am sure the 35L will shine at its best when I get a FF body. Its a bit soft complete open but comes to its own when stopped to f1.8-2.

I read this thread start to finish, loved what I saw, got mine on Saturday and am very impressed with it. Espeicially wide open at ISO 3200 in the back yard with ambient light at night. I can't wait to take this to some night life. Great lens for the money. I put a B&W UV Haze filter on mine just in case I get careless, and also bought a rubber hood for lower profile to stick the camera under my coat for street shooting if I ever get brave! It brings back lots of memories of my AE-1 and A-1 with 50mm f/1.4 lenses. 20D and this lens plus 17-85 IS makes a nice light and versatile package. One lens in a pocket, 580EX in another, and camera with a lens on it. Doesn't beaty my C5050 for a street shooter, but that's another life.
Sigma 30mm f/1.4--just goes to show you your L glass does NOT rule everything!

Is it me, or are a lot of the pics in this thread shot at wide open then claimed poor focus? It seems this lens serves a dual purpose--great up-close in-focus subject with blurred back ground (if thought out that way), or a great deep DOF lens when shot farther away than point-blank and at a small f-stop. Up close and in your subject's face wide open--this thing has bookoo bokeh! Stopped down say 5.6 to 8, and subject is 20 something feet away or more--way huge DOF. I like it! I'll lose weight zooming with my feet!

I just bought this lense used from a used camera shop,... for 32000 yen, ~US$270, still have the original shop warranty until Jan 2008.
but i think it has back(front?)focus issue. I took a picture of a battery at available light with tripod, and it is always out of focus. Is there another test to confirm backfocus/frontfocus ?
For general use I dont see any problem though.
I will post some examples later.

Plan on buying the sigma lens as well for a Canon Digital Rebel XTi. For those who bought online, where did you purchase from? B&H says they are out of stock. TriStateCamera sounds suspicious, sigma4less, might be a winner, but they are closed until next Wednesday, as is a lot of other companies. Adorama is also out of stock. Any suggestions? I think I will probably order from sigma4less, being that it is cheaper there and says it is in stock. Any advice is welcome! I'm heading to Spain with my g/f at the end of May and want to get some practice in with the camera and lens before I go.

A year and change later and this is still my favorite lens. I'm moving to a 20D soonish, it will be interesting to see how the lens acts on that body (I used my friends 20D for a while and all the random focus issues I have on my xt just 'went away'). I still say for the money this is a great lens, even if you have to sort any problems out with sigma.

Actually I was amazed when selling my 50mm f1.4 how much this lens is new compared to the Canon 50mm. Its over $100 US difference, which is a lot of money considering one is Canon (usually a lot more then third party) and this is Sigma, usually less then Canon. But it makes sense when looking at the 35L.
Like the Canon 24-70L is around $1200 and the Sigma 24-70 EX is around $500, sort of the same thing with the 35L/30EX and I would say that this Sigma 30 EX DC is a EFs L lens. Or the closest thing to one i have seen other then the two Canon EFs ones.

BTW I got my copy from Tristate, was a little worried about that too. Came out to be $375 shipped. I placed the order last week, got a lame follow-up call from a guy at Tristate to confirm that I had a compatible body, but then it got shipped same day and arrrived just now.

I just got mine 30 minutes ago. :D Bought the lens second hand only two month old at a very nice price. Got the 85mm f/1.8 too from the same person and both are insanely sharp wide open.
Here's a boring box photo just to test. No sharpening - straight from RAW. No more pixel peeping, I'm out of here. :D

You are right to be concerned, but my experience did work out, though not without the credit card company getting involved, and I didn't feel too bad off at the end of it.

I have both, and both are superb primes. Maybe people found they preferred the extra length that the 85mm gives. Me, I wouldn't want to lose either of them - they're both such great lenses that it'd suck to lose either of them!

Thanx! :)
Actually it was the autofocus motor noise from canon's 35mmf2 lens.....but yes....the shutter is louder so it doesn't really matter. Our baby sleeps REALLY lightly, the shutter will wake him up.....

its an EF mount and you'll get dark corners with it on a 5D. I've used it on my EOS5 wide open for some nice vignetted shots. I'd not want to use it for anyother purpose. you can use extention tubes but you'll be very close to your sunject with even a 12mm one

So without extension tubes, I can mount the sigma 30 1.4 onto my 5D? I'd like to try it and just play around but I wasn't sure if it'd mount or the mirror would slam onto the rear element.
*EDIT*
Nevermind, it works with just a bit of vignetting without tubes. Nothing a little cropping won't fix :).

To give you an idea of how much vignetting, when you take a picture and review it, one press of the "zoom in" button gets rid of all the dark edges.
It's late here with terrible terrible light but next chance I get, I'll shoot something a bit more interesting and post up the results :).
