I think my copy got front focusing issues(not a lot but some). See the TV is clearer than the piano? I focused on the little girl's face. I assume if my copy is spot on, the music sheet on piano will be clearer than the TV, right?
http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w174/iamdogdog/zoe/IMG_9319.jpgWith objects this small, this close together, I think it's very difficult to make a definitive decision. Spread them apart, stagger them front-to-rear and left-to-right more and then re-shoot.

Couple of early goes with the lens. I don't know if I am expecting too much, but I'm certainly not seeing "pin sharp" when the lens is wide open. Going back through the thread I haven't found any non-sharpened examples either. I like the look and feel of the lens though, I just need to stop pixel peeping :D

Hi guys,
I have a problem. I bought a Sigma 30mm f1.4 a few days ago. Working out great for photos and focus is pretty much dead on.
However, when I view photos at 100% crop, I see ALOT of noise / sparkles in the photos. It looks like hot pixels. It seems to be related to ISO levels (increases with ISO settngs).
I have done testing back to back with use the same exposure settings and shutter speed on a 18-55 kit lens, testing back to back, and the difference is very obvious in dark areas of the shots.
Is this normal? Here is what it looks like, 100% crop, sigma on the left, 18-55 on the right.
Setting is 1/30 sec, IS400, f4

I don't know what you were expecting . . . all of these shots are great. At those distances, your DOF is razor thin. In the first pic, focus caught her lashes you can tell by her shirt pattern just how little of a plane is present. The second catches her left eye crystal clear, but the slight tilt of her head through the right out of plane. In the last pic your focus is between the two balls. I looked at your flickr and the photos are plenty sharp and all very well done. Enjoy your lens as I enjoy mine.

Hi, Yeah I know where the focus hit, it's exactly this sort of candid shot of my daughter playing that I like a shallow DoF for. The pictures look fine after processing\resize, and taking into account it's on a crop camera and most of my test shots are with high ISO, I'm happy with the lens. It was just all the "pin sharp" wide open statements had led me into a trap of too high expectations! :)
I'd messed around with MA as well, and to be honest it's fine set to 0!

I use Lightroom 3.3 and Photoshop CS5, and never use DPP. But since you shot raw with identical settings and since the lens has absolutely nothing to do with sensor noise, the culprit can only be DPP. Do you have high ISO noise reduction turned on? If so, DPP might be giving preferential treatment to the image from the Canon lens. Whatever the case, a lens can't cause more sensor noise.
If you used a real raw converter :), you wouldn't see any noise variation between lenses.

I checked the exif of the last uncropped portrait of your daughter. You were shooting wide open from 1.5 feet (.44m). I don't know if it's realistic to expect much better than what you got in that shot; however, at that close focus distance, it looks like you might have a wee bit of front focusing. At the center of the image (where I'm assuming you were focusing) here eyelashes are a little soft, while here fingers and the printing on the bottom of the bottle appear to be sharper. Obviously I can't tell a whole lot from a small image like this, plus I can't really tell for sure from the angle whether the bottle is actually closer to the camera than her eyes but it seems likely. Anyway, you might want to set MA at +1.
I don't know if I'd call this lens tack sharp wide open, but I find it decently sharp in the center though the corners are a little soft (but with the kind of thing one usually shoots wide open that doesn't matter much). I've got the Sigma 50/1.4 and I find it both sharper in the center and in the corners wide open (on a crop camera).

The fingers look a bit sharper in the web sized image, but they're not. I've got the 50mm 1.4 as well, and it's on a par with the 30, perhaps a tiny bit sharper wide open. So far though it's only shots taken at a closer distance that I am getting anything nicely sharp, anything further away is soft. It may be focus shift but there doesn't appear to be anything remotely sharp in the shot at all at the further distance. It's still early days yet though, and I'm yet to have some decent light to get some shots in!
I've messed around with MA a fair bit on this lens, and probably still will for a bit! It was just all the reports of "pin sharp" in the centre wide open that led me to expect more. I just think my definition of pin sharp differs :)
I love the lens so far though, going to have a lot of fun with it hopefuly.

The focus sensor is actually quite a bit larger than the "dot" in the viewfinder. I'm convinced this is the cause of 99.9999% of all the "My Sigma can't focus" problems.

Mine arrived today. I am excited about taking it out to play! Unfortunately, it is very gloomy here today. I took a couple shots in my office but that really isn't a good way to test it. From 2 feet away, it is front focusing about 1 cm. Like others have stated...it is not a macro lens so I will wait to make my verdict!

Well, I took a few more test shots and sure enough...front focusing.
I used this site to guide me through testing...

I cannot post pics from work, but this pic is almost exactly the results I got from many many many shots.

I bought the lens from Abes and I could send it back, but dang if its not right before Christmas! I think I might keep it until after Christmas and then send it to Sigma.
My other option is to just live with it. I took some shots of my daughter this morning and they were good pics, especially since it was very overcast.
I am all over the place with my thoughts and maybe I will just sleep on it and make a decision later.

I highly recommend not just living with it. Mine front focused also and it always bugged me but I lived with it and in some situations it wasn't a big deal. Then I got the 7D and did some microadjusting. I'm blown away by the difference and I'm MUCH more likely to use this lens now because now it's a fun lens.
So either exchange it or send it for calibration, but you'll enjoy it so much more if it's right.

Like I said above, you really need to know what you want to focus on when using an extremely low aperture setting. Failing to do so will result is some blur, which can be cool in some circumstances and not-so-cool in other cases.
Very true...took some pics of my son (using my 50mm f/1.8) with his hair spiked up in the bathtub the other night. The one from the front looked great because his face and the front spike was in focus. Took one from the side and his ear was in focus but his hair was blurry. One looked great and the other looked horrible. Really not something I ever thought about with the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6...but pulled off right it's really a beautiful thing.

I impulse bought one of these early this morning to take pictures at our Christmas Eve party. It'll be here tomorrow, since Amazon has free 1-day shipping because it's so close to Christmas. I have two fingers crossed hoping I get a good copy.
Do you guys have any shooting tips for me? This will be my first prime.

I've noticed there's a huge difference between shooting with this lens in a 550D body rather than my old 500D. I suspect that it's in the new center crosstype AF sensor, also found in the 7D, which is not only faster focusing but also a lot more precise. The 500D used to show a small but noticeable front focus in half of the shots while the 550D is spot on 90% of the times. Also, notice this AF sensor will benefit from all f/2.8 or faster lenses. I can say I'm a happy camper now.

I may be wrong, but all rebels since the 400D/Xti have had that high precision center point and it is not the same as the one from the 7D. As far as I know, the only camera you can buy today without that center f2.8 point is the 1000D/XS

That's the point...I don't want to see your shot on Flickr, you posted it here...So, perhaps it is a nice shot but it's too small so it doesn't really say anything about the image quality when using this lens unless you leave this site and follow your link :( .

You are right, I just checked the specs on DPReview and that seems to be the case. No idea why this lens focuses faster and more accurately on my 550D then, but there have been definite changes between the two bodies regarding focus.

well I can confirm these 30mm lenses are tough. Mine took a horrid tumble on hardwood where it went from one side of the room to the other, and it lived to tell the tale. One of the rims on the front of the lens where the hood attached broke, so my hood's wobbly, but the lens still works fine!

I had the same problem when I went from my 30D to the 7D - I suddenly couldn't get it to work very well...I found out it needed a serious amount of MA to get it back in line. Maybe you need to do the same?

Goncas - sorry it is not completed yet so not yet :D But it is a lot of manual work...
Within 5 meters it needed:
1m -> +2
2m -> +2 to +3
3m -> +4
5m -> +5
This is gonna make me cry, though i wouldn't worry as much if 7D had a proper focus screen for manual focus...
The only reason why i got a 7d is 30mm sigma and because they can't get along there is no reason for me being crop...if i get the funds right all my gear is going for sale...
Either way, it behaved well before the dammed trip to canon :/

I use back button focus and AI Servo about 95% of the time and it keeps up with fast moving subjects just fine. I shoot dog agility and it doesn't have too much trouble - but it sometimes slows down if the light is REALLY bad.

I've been using it AI Servo as well and I've been pleasantly surprised by the performance, it does pretty well. As already said if in low light it can struggle, but that goes for most lenses.

I don't think they even have crackers here (I've never seen them anyway) and I had to go to some fancy imported food shop in NYC just to find some mince pies!
I was going to make them but I couldn't find mincemeat anywhere. Happily, I was able to make the brandy butter which was fortunate as you can't buy that ready-made either.

Yes - get one of each of the following: AAA, AA, D, C, Lantern, Motorcycle, and Car/Truck batteries... line 'em up, in a slight angle from where you will be shooting, on a flat surface. Set up some very good lighting, minimize shadows from interfering. Then, go to Sears, get one of these: http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00917964000P?sid=IDx20101019x00001a&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=SPM209381340 and hook that up to all of the batteries... one by one, taking photo of each, seeing how the AF does upon each battery as you test them. The battery that is best in focus will be the battery that you'll need to keep, as it is the one that passed your battery test.
:p

Looks like its front focusing? The carpet looks to be in focus rather than the eye.

that's what i was thinking. I also tried to manual focus and still the same thing. when it's front focusing and I go into the MA controls which way do you change to fix the front focusing.

For front focus - you'll adjust the (+), if it is back focusing - you'll adjust (-).

MA does not affect manual focus, only auto. How did you manually focus? The eye isn't particularly near a focus point, did you focus and recompose? Also the eye and surrounding area is very dark, AF may have trouble as there is not enough contrast, or did you focus to the edge of the eye? f1.4 is a very narrow DoF, the carpet does look in focus and you do have to take into account that the dogs head is above the carpet, probably nearly in line?

turned the focus ring all the way to the left then went turned it back until it was focused. negative, I just focused at the eye no recomposing.

Colours have been tweaked for a more subdued look (indoor light mixed with sunlight and wooden flooring makes for a very warm pic!). It's been resized for web and USM applied with 100, 0.3, 1 settings in CS5. It's at ISO400 so detail is lost a bit on the eye lashes. I'll see if I can dig out a cleaner shot to show a 100% crop.
edit: Actually that's not quite all, I've recently started using an action which resizes in steps. This finishes with a USM 100, 0.3, 1 which a lot of the time I don't actually apply as it can over sharpen. The steps I recorded are as follows (to a RAW file imported from Lightroom into CS5):
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_YuHJFANHapY/TR4pRVVaNnI/AAAAAAAAAgk/SHaDRrk76kM/s800/resize%20action.jpg (http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/XEo2yzlA3IGIbfx5dj-9Pg?feat=embedwebsite)

cool thanks for the detailed comment, the eyes and colors look great and was wondering if that was how sharp your lens was wide open lol. when you do actions do you just push record and edit away? I've never recorded actions before but i need to give it a try.
