I love this lens, even though at times it can be hard to get it to focus where I want it to (probably because of the tiny DoF and "user error" :))

I have the 17-55 which covers what this lens is able to do. But I shoot indoors often, and nightclubs. Would you guys recommend this lens? (believe me, nothings wrong with the 17-55, its just a bit too heavy and im afraid i might hurt it :P )
secondly, with the focusing issues, I am restraining from ordering it through BH and instead go to henry's to pick this up (I would end up losing $150 doing this), would you recommend i take my chances and order through BH? as I am in canada and i HATE having to mail stuff out with my own money i want to do as much as i can to avoid this.

John, I did not want to go off-topic on the thread so I have PM'd you my thoughts on the 40D.
divinemethod: great question - it's pretty debatable either way (as you have seen from the two posts above mine!) Interesting that you pose this question as well, since I am considering getting a 17-55mm myself. However, my reasoning is not for its low-light performance, but rather it's sharpness and large aperture (for better bokeh) when compared to the kit lens that I currently have on 'standby' for when I need a wide angle.
Regarding an actual opinion on your question: again, I think it's the classic IS vs. large aperture debate. Certainly your 17-55mm is much more versatile, and has IS to boot. That IS, to some degree, offsets the faster Sigma 30mm. And then, you factor in subject movement and it gets interesting. In a club, I'd imagine people / your subjects would be moving most of the time and so IS will not help here, while the Sigma will. Something else to consider is that at f/1.4, depth of field is pretty darn small on anything not far away (though not entirely problematic as the lens is relatively wide at 30mm - if it were a longer focal length, DoF would be smaller).
So, you have to think about what you will be shooting:
People posing for you? Yes - keep your Canon. No - consider the Sigma.
Would you want shots of the entire club as opposed to a small portion (such as above, a group of people)? Yes - keep your Canon (the smaller aperture will let you have more in focus and the IS will help lots)
How critical are you of the sharpness and focus-precision of your shots / are you a pixel peeper? Very / Yes - keep your Canon. No - consider the Sigma.
As far as paying a little more to avoid the hassle, for me personally, it would be worth the extra expense to not have to go through the huge hassle of sending the lens back and just knowing that should I want to exchange, it will be an easy process. Then again, should you have a copy with a focus issue, you could have Sigma take a look at it for you (and I've heard that they even request your camera body to calibrate the lens to match your body precisely)...
Good luck!

I wish Sigma would redesign this lens to work on the 1.3 croppers (the further it's stopped down, the more it vignettes). The difference in price between the Sigma and Canon version is probably the hardest pill to swallow yet.
Great great great lens on a 1.6 body.

Interesting. I had both and now the 1755 is gone.
I have both. the 17-55 certainly sees more use, as its my walk around lens. the 1.4 is fantastic for indoor no flash photography, and portrait photography. Honestly, 2.8 is often not fast enough indoors for people, since they move and the is does not help. also its nice to play with the shallow dof. If I had to give up one, i would give up the 30, but of my 4 primes (30, 50, 85, 105) its my favorite.

How is your corner-sharpness, guys? Pixel-peeping my photos (or even going to, say, 50% of full size), I can see that my center is very sharp, but towards the corners (and I'm not talking extremes either) I find quite a drastic reduction in sharpness - seems to be apparent at all apertures, too. Still, not a deal breaker for me since I don't print my images (at least not at 100%) - I mostly resize to about 25% to post on the web.

Since I almost always shoot wide open, or nearly wide open, my corners are almost always out of focus, since the DOF is so tiny.

I think I'm going to order this lens. There really is no alternative if I want f/1.4 in a lens wider than 50mm other than the $1100+ Canon 24L and 35L.
Buydig.com has the best price of any of the reputable dealers. Has anyone had to return a defective product to them? I'm wondering how good their return policy is. It states 30 days but I've never heard of anyone who's actually returned something to them.

Well I have a 40d already ;-) the only reason I ain't got another 30mm 1.4 for it is because I am now tryin' at stickin' to EF lenses with view to staying with FF useful kit. Once you have used a 5D everything else is second best. I am therefore putting up with another 50mm 1.4 instead. Not quite as good but still a sweet lens.

I'm debating the whole FF vs. glass for 1.3 crop/1.6 crop and only because the budget got busted a long time ago........;)

It's funny that half of the people singing the praise of this lens no longer even own it (looking at people's gear list).
I don't know what that means ... you'd have to drill down to why that might be to get anything meaningful. I no longer own the 24-105 IS L, or lots of other lenses or bodies ... so what?
Anyway, I have had two 50mm 1.4's and a 30mm 1.4 and I would always choose the 30mm where it not for need to cover FF. It just has a rare quality that I like. At f8.0 you aren't gonna complain at either so really you can choose safely on 'feel' of the image and focal length.

Quite - needs change, therefore need to own particular lenses / kit comes and goes. If someone asked me about a beginner / intermediate set of tripod legs and head, I'd happily recommend the Manfrotto 190XPROB and 488RC2 head, even though I no longer own them. Likewise, I wish I could still own my old 85mm f/1.8, which is optically probably the best lens I've ever owned, but needs change, so I had to sell it.

It's one of two lenses (along with the 1755 f2.8 IS) that have kept me APS-C. In fact, it has the longest tenure of any lens in my bag, IIRC.

This lens is such a kid friendly lens - they need to be able to be used to having a camera in their face for headshots, but I've got soooo many lovely shots of the kids I've taken with this indoors - that the 24-70 wouldn't have been able to do, due to the slower aperture.

I agree. I think it would have been interesting to have taken two shots: One with a focus on the face and the current one. Then layer them and put the in-focus part through the lenses. I wonder how that would turn out?

I think that would have totally confused the wife!! She took the photo after a short tutorial on focussing points and what large aperture does at differing distances, she kept backing away and I kept walking forward........i'm suprised I got one in focus at all!

Well, I finally got mine a couple of days ago. I won't get into the long story of how I ordered one from buydig and wound up paying $60.00 more for one locally.... Anyhow, I picked up my lens local (Purchase local, they "special ordered it" and 10 minutes later I drive over to the Sigma Service/Warehouse center to pick it up.) and ahh.. what do we have here? a bit of front focus. TBH, I expected this and as someone earlier in this thread said, "This lens just has too much potential. I don't care if it has to go to Sigma". I agree. So I go drive 10 minutes over to Sigma. I waited for 1/2 an hour for them to calibrate it. That's it.
This lens is so much fun, I really enjoy it..even though I haven't had time to shoot much of anything besides what I can find in the few minutes I've had recently. Here's a few very generic, crapola shots I can share. They're all pretty much taken under harsh lighting conditions which is what impressed me even more with this lens. It's not typical for me to take off my 70-200 f2.8 IS. I haven't put it back on yet.

I've had two go through my hands, only because a canceled order made it to my house and was curious if I would see any copy variation. They were identical on my body, both had slight front focus. One quick visit to Sigma and focus is on the money. As I said before, I think this lens is worth a trip to service if need be. I personally consider one visit to service a good thing. I've certainly sent canon stuff in more than once for the same piece of equipment..
While I'm at it, I'd like to recommend staying away from beachcamera/buydig (yes, they are the same place). Having ordered from them several times, I have never felt comfortable with their packaging or the fact that the equipment they send out has never been touched.
Also, Having dealt with Canon, Tamron and now Sigma service (Tamron and Sigma being 20 and 10 minutes from where I live) I can say now that Sigma service has been my best EXPERIENCE. Sigma service is better than Tamrons in the form of night and day. Canon...well, lets just say "No pain, no gain".. For me anyhow.

There's really no point. It's obvious what a crop lens will do on a full frame body. It'll vignette. You should only be curious about how it does on a 1.3x (1D, 1D II/N, 1D III). Here's the answer to the latter:

Dude,
Sometimes you have to think outside the box. Maybe this lens on a 5D shot at 1.4 will give a nice smooth natural looking vignette that doesn't need to be added in PP.
I've been earning a living as a photog for 20 years. Coming from the old school film mentality, you crop and capture everything in the camera, you don't rely on Photoshop to make an image better. So if putting a 30 1.4 on a 5D gives me what I'm looking for I just saved myself some post processing time, (and about $900 for a 35 1.4L,) that I can spent shooting more images for my Stock agent. Time is Money.
Keep checking here.....maybe you'll learn something, or maybe I'll have to say "Hey Dude...you were right....It does look like your looking through a freakin pipe".
We are all here to learn new stuff, so let's keep an open mind, and see what happens.

No, it won't. The 1D series (1.3x) does that. The 5D won't be pleasant, it'll be disgusting and render the lens useless since you'll be cropping to about 50mm AOV anyway.
I really don't care how long you've been making a living as a photographer. That means nothing if you can't see what a 1.3x sensor does with a 1.5/1.6x designed lens then realize what an even bigger sensor camera would do. The 1.3x gives somewhat pleasing vignetting, sure. The 5D will only be more severe.

Everyone would have the 35L if money wasn't an issue. But really it's the best option for FF. Other than that there's the 28mm f/1.8 and 35mm f/2, the latter being kinda chinsy (think 50mm f/1.8 II).

Sigma 30mm f1.4 at 1.4 on a Canon 5d
Fashizzle Dude..........Guess what.......You were right!
It does look like your looking through a freakin pipe!
I guess this just proves that I'm a stubborn mofo!
Now we have a reference when the next stubborn SOB wants to see the 30 1.4 shot on a FF camera.
PS Just ordered the 35 1.4L

LOL told you. I guess in hindsight it doesn't hurt to show it. We can all be stubborn at times. I'm no exception. :p

Interesting post... I have the 30 that I use on my old 300D, but was afraid to place it on my 5D cause I was afraid the lens protruded to far into the body and would hit the mirror... I wonder if he has a beat up mirror?

Third party crop lenses aren't protruding like EF-S lenses.

My Sigma 30 may not protrude like an ef-s (none do I own), but I was still not going to risk trying it out. Love my 5D too much.

I just picked this up Saturday in a trade and love it. This is a fun shot today of my puppy that didn't want to be photographed!

I'm seriously thinking about this lens, but I have a ridiculous question to ask of anyone with one...
How does this lens operate with extension tubes?

I don't have this lens yet... but really want it. I also just got my first set of Extension tubes for Christmas. I had asked this question some time ago with the thinking of wow... such a sharp lens, but was told that at 30mm, the working distance isn't much... and the 30mm lens has a not so good minimum focusing distance already.

Since the rear element doesn't extend beyond the contacts, you have nothing to worry about except the disgusting black edges and corners.
