If you don't know how to take it apart DON'T. Send it in or just use manual focus.

Mine arrived today! I got it out, put it on my T2i and did a few shots. It is perfectly sharp, but appears to front focus by about 1 inch at f1.4 at 24 inches. At f3.5 it's about 2 inches of front focus. Yes, it focuses in front of where it should be. I did this several times in several tests and it's consistent. I was very careful on where that focus square was landing and angled in such a way that the area actually in focus is definitely outside the focus square with room to spare.
However, my 7D will be arriving tomorrow. So the question...do I sent it back for another copy? Do I send it in to be "calibrated"? Or do I say the hell with it and adjust the micro focus on the 7D and go on my merry way?

@cdo221: nice bridge shot. I like the way the fog made the photo feel almost surreal.
Thanks drew. I love having a bit of fog to get that effect... though too much and I can't get anything haha.
Here's some more SF fog at the Golden Gate Bridge, this time at F/9.0

Very nice, I like it.
Guess what cdo221, looks like I'm going to be "looking to buy" this lens soon....again . I have a 40D on it's way to me....again
Hopefully I get a a copy just like yours
Nice! I feel somewhat bad/greedy because I never want to give this lens up even though it was originally yours haha.

OK. Got the 7D yesterday and the focus adjustment seems to fix the problem. What would you do? Would you send it back for another? Or is this common enough that I may just get another with the same problem and keep paying shipping for it?

It should also work well on your T2i right? I'd have it calibrated. People seem to get good results.

If anything send it to get it calibrated, that's a safer bet. However, since you have it MFA'd on your 7D, i see no reason at all to put it on the t2i.

I'm sending it back to Adorama. They are shipping a replacement and covering the shipping. I hear that for calibration they want the actual camera too and I really don't want to ship my new toy away. Why would they need the camera to just get the thing to their own specs and focus properly on a standard body? Do they not know what that spec is? Can't they just calibrate it to a generic body?

Hey. That Raynox appears pretty nice. Have any more shots with it? Is there a thread for it?
In my 2 following sets on flickr, every shot was taken using the Raynox 250 on either the Sigma 30mm f1.4 or the Canon 50 f1.8:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dpockett/sets/72157627001874783/
(last 8 shots were Panasonic FZ50)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dpockett/sets/72157627001861973/
But the Raynox is a pretty cool inexpensive way to get macro shots, very sharp on a sharp lens - working distance is the only barrier, but it doesn't stop me, I just clip it onto one of my other lenses if I need more space...

I was probably only 10cm away or thereabouts, it is a very small working distance, but if your subject is still enough you can get good results.

I still wanna get a macro lens one day, but not until I go FF and get a 100mm f2.8, so the Raynox will do me just fine until then. To be able to focus 1:1 and to infinity with one lens is what I want, but just for macro shots the Raynox is a very handy investment - excellent bang for buck!
It will fit your 50mm perfectly, and your 55-250 - be prepared for some vignetting on the Sigma 30, and also the 18-55 (at wide end). But to be honest, a little crop or vignette adjustment in PP and it's fine anyway.

Thanks...The photos were shot RAW and converted with LR3. The only adjustments were to change the WB to "auto" (I had it set for daylight! lol), add the normal contrast, clarity, and sharpness necessary when shooting RAW. I pulled the luminance down a bit in the sky of the second to make it a bit more rich. I actually got the exposure I was looking for so no real adjustments needed in that dept. The colors were pretty much right out of the camera/lens.

Do any of you users actually have a gripe about the MFD? I looked up the MFD of the 28 1.8 and the 30 1.4 and there's only a 3.7" difference. I'm wanting this lens but I wanted to ask if you all have any issues.
I plan to use it as a walk around and for indoor candids of my daughter. This focal length seems like it will really suit my shooting style.

The MFD is 40 cm or 15.7 inches. To me that works just fine. Are you looking to shoot macro with it or something. That is not really within the scope of this lens.
+ the distortion when shooting buildings
Distortion can be fixed in less than a second in LR3. I have an import preset that does it and I never know the difference.
I plan to use it as a walk around and for indoor candids of my daughter. This focal length seems like it will really suit my shooting style.
I think you will very much enjoy the lens for what you describe. It is a really functional all purpose lens. Much more useful on the 1.6 crop cameras than the 50 mm IMO. Mine is quite sharp. Love it and use it all the time.

The 30 will be great for small children. Don't worry about the MFD. For shooting toddlers, getting in to close is going to result in distortion anyway. I've used it extensively for my daughter's first 18 months, and it produced keeper after keeper for her 1yr old birthday last year. Recently with her running around at 20 months it's a bit wide as I need to be to close and I end up in her area of attention, often losing the candid opportunity, but otherwise, it's spectacular. And mine is the "old" finish, but requires no micro-adjustment.

That was shot wide open at 1.4. I was about 3 feet from the focus point. The wall in the background is about 25 ft away. Having only had 24mm on my 7D for a long time, I forgot what wide angle was. If you "reverse" the 1.6 crop, the 30mm on ff is like a 19mm on crop! I've only had my 24-105 for a long time. I can't wait for my wife to get back with it as that will be like 15mm on crop (and without the vignetting)

OK. I'm REALLY wanting to love this lens. But I received my second copy today and it too is front focusing badly at close range. I can fix it with MFA on my 7D BUT then the correction causes problems as the distance increases. I really don't get this. None of my other lenses have had this problem. Just this one. Sure, I could send it in and have the lens "calibrated" but is that really necessary to get this thing to proper specs? Wouldn't there be a "normal" which would be the same on all cameras that all the other lenses happen to have no trouble with that they could calibrate too? There's nothing wrong with my camera or it would be a problem across all the lenses, right? ERGH! I just want this lens to work!
So should I try for a third one?

kfreels....I don't know what to tell you. I have only purchased one sigma lens...the 30 1.4. I bought it used, old style, off POTN. It is right on the money with focus and sharp as hell. Therefore I'm one of the one's that loves this thing and thinks anyone that has a 1.6 crop and an affinity for primes would love it to. But having to send it back several times would put me over the edge and I would say forget it. I also think it is totally absurd to have to send your camera in with a newly purchased lens just to get it to work right. Is it really and truly front focusing or are you being too picky? Are you trying it in real life situations or are you using a focus chart and over analyzing it? I have never shot a focus chart...okay, that a lie. ;). I'm not helping so I'll stop there. It is a really nice lens and FL for your cameras though. I say try one more time.

Nope. It's not a pickiness issue. It's off quite a bit on my 7D and the results are the same on my T2i. With no MFA using the focus test chart from focustestchart.com on a tripod at 45 degrees the text that should be in focus is completely illegible but 20mm is incredibly sharp. So at 15 inches it is off by about 1.5 inches. In real world, the best portrait result is to focus on the ears to get the eyes in focus which looks better than focusing on the eyes themselves. Like I said, I can microadjust at +20 and it comes in line, but then anything at a distance is all screwed up. The only option is to manually focus based on my best guess on sharpness.
I've never been one to harp on quality control. My assumption is usually that the majority are good and the few bad ones are the ones that people talk about. But this one seems to be a continual known issue. I have a Sigma 10-20 that was perfect out of the box. The stuff actually in focus when I use this lens is awesome and I really REALLY want this to work out. I looked at the Canon 35mm 1.4 L and it is 3 times the price of this one, so I guess I'm going to stick to it and keep trying. I did find that I don't HAVE to send my camera with the lens to Sigma. I've heard people have had wonderful results after sending one in but it just doesn't seem right that I would have to take a brand new product and pay to ship both ways to have it fixed. Even worse, if I do send it in, then it still isn't quite how I want it, do I then lose the ability to return it to Adorama? Just don't know which way to go with this!

i think you have to send it to sigma together with your 7d for calibration. there's nothing wrong with your body and lens. they will just do some minor adjustments.. and if youre going to use that also with your t2i, then you you to send both bodies.

I say you should push to have Sigma pay the shipping. I would also ask Adorama if sending it in will nullify the return. My guess is it would. Hmmm, It really is a nice lens. I was just shooting with it a few minutes ago (because we were talking about it here I decided to get it out). I'm a poor grad student with a family, there is no way I could buy the 35L. Hey folks, if the sigma 30 takes a while to focus in an indoor low light situation, I'm saying it takes a good 1 to 1.5 seconds until the Single Shot beeps to confirm focus, is it the lens that's slow in focus or the camera body. I was shooting at a birthday party with 60D + 580 EX ii. Even with the aid of the flash, it took a while to focus.. I've tried switching the aperture from wide open to f/8, same result.
Any tips or advices would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

try using it in manual focus and use focus confirm. most lenses have trouble focusing super fast in really low light situations. it is possible that its your camera but my camera has that problem too but it has to be extremely low light

Very Seriously contemplating getting this lens.
Currently using a 8-16 Sigma Ultra Wide, Canon 17-55 2.8. I have the wide and ultra wide range covered well BUT using the super shallow DOF of f1.4 to f2.0 I might get interesting different types of shots.
THe only lens in my collection that I am not using now is my 28-135MM. It's in great condition so I am going to try to sell it when I return to the states.

Arggg!!! Really torn between buying this lens, or to continue saving for a FF.
I already have a 50mm 1.8 and I really like the FOV this Sigma gives on a crop (currently, I have a T1i).
Decisions, decisions....
What would you do? Save, or just buy?

Lenses before body. If you went FF, you'd have ONE lens, and it would be the cheapest one in the whole canon lineup.
You'd get way better results spending that money on lenses to use with your current body.

Say what? Reverse? A lens gets effectively longer on a crop; 30mm on a full frame is 48mm on a crop. That 24-105 that you'll get back from your wife is going to be 38-168mm.
*EDIT: Hmm... I think I get what you're saying. You're using the crop body as the reference point? So what you're seeing on a ff is what you could have seen using a different lens on a crop body. The Sigma 30 on a ff gives you what you could have seen if you had a 19mm lens on a crop. Weird thinking. Definitely backwards :p

Yeah. I have been using crop with a 30 and 24-105. When I put the 24-105 on my FF, 24 will feel like a crop with a 15mm mounted. Yes, reverse thinking as I'm used to crop FL's. In reality yes, I have been using 38mm as my widest and now I will have true 24mm.
