Haha well it's a big cat! And it's an RC car. The "effect" is pretty simple actually. I shot it at f2.2 and had the camera on the floor (roughly 5-6 feet away). I was in a pretty decent sized warehouse so the bokeh is pretty nice, even at a relatively small aperture.

Just re-ordered a sigma 30 1.4. I had one, but I found I didnt use it as much as my 17-50 2.8 and 11-16 2.8. but now I want something faster and with more of a shorter DOF. Cant wait to get it.
Old post but I just ran across this and found it funny. I've had the same thoughts. Every since I got my 17-55 my sig 30 hasn't seen much use. I keep contemplating selling it but I just can't bring myself to part with it for some reason, don't know what it is. I do still consider it one of my favorite though. I'll have to mount it as my only lens for a while and see what I can come up with.
For the sake of a pic thread, here are a few from a while back

@arctic98z amazing capture, I'm using you used the clarity slider though? I tend to set it via the adjustment brush just because i don't particular like the haloing effect it creates (like where the mountains meet the sky) but it's entirely personal i guess.
Anyways here's a relatively boring shot of a window.

I'm still deciding whether I like this lens or not. The sharpness so far hasn't blown me away, but then again it could be user error. I actually find my Canon 60mm macro sharper or is that not a fair comparison.

You know what...sometimes I feel that mine is too sharp. Things have a real 3D look sometimes. I see this was shot at f/4. Mine is razor at that aperture. This shot looks pretty good, but difficult for me to really tell how sharp it is d/t the lighting and subject matter. The 60 macro might come off sharper it you are using it for macro and looking at all this nice fine details.

You could be right. Maybe it's my eyes since it looks OK to you. I'll have to try and do a more direct comparison with the two lenses. If it's not going to blow me away I might just go for a zoom lenses within the range. Here's a pic more open at 1.8

Well, a zoom isn't going to get you the speed the prime will. Nor will it get you the shallow DOF at say...30 mm. I must say that the above photo doesn't strike me as "sharp" either. Not real sure where the focus point is. I tend to make my judgment based on where I put my focus point. At 1.8 and close distance there is such a thin DOF that you may get the wrong idea about the lens simply because there will be a great amount of the photo that will not be "in focus" You need to base your impression on where you actually shot. For example, this shot I put the focus on my boy's left eye. This was shot at 1.8 as well. It appears pretty good. I might even say I'm "blown away" ;). If I remember right this was all natural light.Try a few more and pay real close attention as to where you put the focus point. Try some stopped down a bit as well. I tell you, my guess is you are going to have to shell out some serious coin for a zoom that is going to be razor wide open at 30 mm. I'm thinking 17-40 L.

How would you rate yourself at being to hand hold at a slow shutter speed like 1/40? 1/60 is generally the bottom limit for hand held shots, the focal length to shutter speed ratio only works so far. This obviously does vary depending on the person. On my od 7D i tried to not go below 1/100 if i could help it as i found the dense sensor showed up the slightest movement. Also at 1/40 even slight movements by he subject will cause slight motion blur. None of this may apply, but I thought it worth mentioning. Also at f1.4 your DoF is pretty shallow.

1/40 is a slow shutter speed to hand hold. The shot does look soft but this could be due to movement from hand holding at such a slow shutter speed, movement of the subject or of course the lens.

It's personal opinion or might just be my not being as picky as others but the face of your dog looks plenty sharp enough at this size on the forum and at this range from the subject. Tip of the nose back to about the ears looks clear with everything else being nicely oof. I don't think I'd expect to see each hair on the nose rendered in separate detail at that distance from the subject even if viewing at 100% or more.
I started to pixel peep Sigma lenses when I bought them knowing of focus and sharpness issues with them but in the end decided that if I was happy with the image and didn't get comments when posting about having missed focus or it looking soft then it was all right for me.

Here is one taken with a 5DII, cropped a little to remove the hard vignette, and a little soft vignette applied in LR to try to make it look cool. I took this shot just to experiment. Was going for conditions that would really show the vignette. With the crop I wonder what FL it make this shots equivalent to on the FF?

There are lenses that are designed for crop in that their image circle is not big enough to completely cover a FF sensor, and other lenses that protrude into the camera body so that they can only safely be used with a 1.6x crop body without causing mirror damage. I believe that the Sigma 30 is in the first category (cannot be called compatible because of the vignetting, but otherwise fine).

It didn't seem to do anything to the 5DII. It just had a TON of really hard vignetting. I cropped it a fair amount to make that image. Seems like if you were going to use this a lot on the FF cameras you would have to rally be careful with composing your shots. I sold this lens yesterday and am already totally regretting it. I don't know what the heck to do now for a wider prime. I always wished it was a tad wider. So I am looking at the 35's for a FF. I just can't bring myself to throw down for the mack daddy 35L. Problem is that the sigma was so great that I now want something that is at least on par with it. Hmmmm, any suggestions?

love the lil sigma - was at monterey bay aquarium today with family - the siggy 30 was on the camera all the time. And with no flash action and horrible light - the sigma did pretty well. 21 were rejects in overall of 150 shots taken (OOF - but that can be attributed to me trying to MF when AF failed in low/no light. Here one with minimal processing with proper WB. Handheld with such poor light I dunno only the 50L would have probably done better on a FF

Nice shots, when I looked at the cylinder head it threw me for a minute and I needed to think about what type of car engine has that two cylinder configuration with an oval combustion chamber, then I remembered "flat-four" would be the only engine that would go with that cylinder head and sure enough your other pictures show your Scooby-Doo. try manual - fastest aperture you can manage without underexposing. You can try 1.6/1.8 getting the similar DOF but a slightly sharper image. Use ISO 100 if possible in broad daylight.

By a high quality ND filter if you are ending up at the max shutter speed for the camera. When I had my 1.8 lens, I used a 3 stop to get it possible to shoot, but something stronger might be more ideal.
I hope to have this lens within the next week..... had a canon 35 f2 but this thread made me change my mind

Is there anyway someone would be generous enough to post a few photos and 100% crops? Mine should get back in a few days from focus adjustment, would love something to compare IQ to. Thanks!

Some real nice pics people. You know I'm still on the fence with my copy of the lens since I just don't seem to get the sharpness I'm seeing from alot of the posted pics and want this to be my prime walk-around lens. What do you guys thing of this pic it's OOC 1/250, f3.5, manual focus on the eyes. I only have a few days left to decide if I'm keeping it, thanks.

Do you have a 100% crop of the eyes? My 30 was relatively sharp when I got it, but after sending my camera and 30 to sigma, it was very sharp. Have you thought about calibrating the lens to your camera?

@jawkneefive:
It is cropped although I think it's a slight crop. Yes, I know many have gone the calibration route, I guess with one body I didn't feel comfortable doing that. Is calibration fairly common on many lenses to max out IQ? If yes, I would rethink it, but if not there are other lenses.
@sirrith:
Thanks for the confirmation. I've just gotten so many mixed results with this lens I honestly don't know if I have a 'good' one or not. Maybe it's just a difficult lens to master for a newbie?

I have the 60d and it took a little over a week for sigma to calibrate the lens to my camera and ship it back to philly. Other than a point and shoot, it's the only DSLR I own too. I knew calibration might be something I have to do before I purchased this lens so getting a copy that needed a little adjustment didn't bother me. Calibration was just something I accepted in light of the images that the siggy can produce on a crop body.
From what I know, calibration is necessary to eek out max sharpness. I wish the 60D had the ability to make micro adjustments to compensate for front or back focusing like the 50D, but canon decided to leave out that feature. If canon left that feature on, you could probably have dialed in adjustments yourself. If you really want to be sure that your lens isn't focusing dead on, you can run through this to be sure: http://focustestchart.com/focus21.pdf

Assuming its under warranty, you have to pay shipping there - they pay shipping back. They had mine there only 1 day. But shipping to and from makes it about a week process.

ISO 12,800, f1.8, 1/80. Didn't want to shoot wide open here because of some focusing issues I have been having with this lens lately. It is very unreliable. Going to send it in -- I mostly use it in manual focus. He was moving around/dancing when I shot this though.

Wow.... looks great after calibrating. I just got mine from amazon and it is WAY, WAY off on the focusing, like not even sure if MFA would fix it. Getting them to do an overnight replacement, and if I don't get one that's good for my body I'll likely send it in. I'm kind of disappointed, but oh well, weather this weekend isn't supposed to be too great.

Man, I sold this lens a few weeks back. The buyer found it to be a bit longer than he wanted. Today I saw it back up on the the FS thread. I almost bought it back just because I liked it so much. I don't even have a body to use it on right now, not to say I won't someday. I felt like this lens was more solid than the siggy 50. I'm probably crazy. The 50 is quite nice as well, I think it is louder though.

When you send it in you send your warranty card, proof of purchase (receipt, or reciept printout), and a personal customer service form they will create for you, that tells the tech guys what to do, and where to send it back. You just have to pay for shipping and insurance there. You'll get those three forms back as well, which you should save incase there are any future problems.
