This lens seems so money, especially on a crop body.

That's what made me wait so long. I really didn't want to buy a lens that would be unusable on a full-frame camera, but I finally gave in. This will be my last "cropped sensor" lens. I'm glad I got it, though! If for no other reason than it is teaching me a lot about how to use a lens with almost too much aperture!

Thanks.

They were both shot at f1.6 with a single af point on her eye. The wide apertures can be tricky but when you nail the focus the results are superb.

I've read of users who had 1.6x crop cameras and kept the 30 when they moved to 1.3X, but this is the first time that I can remember reading of someone without a 1.6X buying the lens. I have been interested in this lens for quite a while but was having a hard time finding one during an extended holiday in Europe. Yesterday I finally found one at a shop in Germany and was able to give it a brief try on my 40D. Here are a couple of pics at f/1.4.

Straight from camera and resized only:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2143/2513384230_352b74110f_o.jpg

This is my attempt at a handheld focusing test with focus point on "objektive & filter" -cropped and very slightly resized:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2004/2512558877_e379f98469_o.jpg

Pretty good in my opinion... I am very happy to see this lens can work straight from the shop. Matter of fact, I think I will go back this morning when they open and buy it. And that is my 24L (which I will be keeping) in the picture.

Rotate the focus ring a few times. flip the AF/MF switch a few times. Sometimes this helps (not sigma or even 30mm specific).

Beautiful photos everyone!!! :)

For the past couple weeks I've been having an internal battle with myself over what my next lens purchase would be. It's been a battle between either the Sigma 30mm 1.4 or the Sigma 10-20mm. I still think the 10-20 would be a lens I would have more "fun" with but with a trip to Washington D.C. coming up soon, I thought a fast lens would be more practical for some of the museums since flashes are not always allowed. So I just went ahead and pulled the trigger and ordered the 30mm 1.4 from B&H, I can't wait till I get it! I'll be sharing some photos from this lens when it arrives.:D:D:D

Yeah, I really like using it as a walkaround lens. I tend to carry the the 17-55 in my bag in case I need something wide. Though even then I tend to find myself around the 24mm length. Only other time I use it is for portrait work so I'll probably do well to change it for a 24-70L.

I prefer the bokeh of the 30mm and of course the ability to get sharp images right down to f/1.4 is great (Assuming I get the focusing right!). I don't see any difference really from f/2.8 up, but I'm not a pixel peeper. I can count the amount of times I found IS useful on the 17-55 on one hand.

Not very often, right? I don't see it being very useful to me either. Well, not recently anyway. I'm considering the 30, but I deeply want the 24L. I don't know if I want to get rid of my 17-55 for the wide end and the long end for portraits like you said...hmm. I could always invest in an 85 also, though :]

'Finally, those of us in London actually got to see the sun. The weather was great so the girlfriend & I headed to Green park. Before getting there she bought a magazine since "You (I) could run off with my camera for 5 minutes".

Well once we get there, she spots two squirrels and suddenly she's the one that's run off.

But it was worth it, got a couple cute shots of her and her new friend. They even eat their nuts the same way... see ;)

You must have a different 5D from mine. I tested the 30mm Sigma on my 5D and there is a clear black curtain vignette on the screen and image. The Sigma specs indicate that its not designed for a FF body in any case.

I specified they were PP'd, but the sharpness is the sharpness in the non lens blur areas.

This is a great lens! The few problems I have seen using this lens were actually body issues with AF or people trying to shoot too close to the subject.

I borrowed one of these for a month last year from a friend who had just bought a 5D. I found at the time that I barely used it as it seemed like an awkward focal length. Anyway, I actually ended up buying the exact same lens off that person a few months back and it has become my most used lens on the 40D.

Hi All,

I received my Sigma 30mm 1.4 this week and wanted to share my thoughts and pictures....

Initial impression- when I opened the box, I was suprised to see a quality lens case. Once I opened that, I found a sturdy lens safe inside. The fact that it comes with a hood as well is great (although the hood fits on the lens a bit loosely).

I decided to put that lens on my 20d and take it to work with me the next day. I took a walk around NYC during lunch and took some shots.

Please note - these images are straight out of the 20d, no post processing whatsoever. The hood was used, but no filters of any kind (a CP really would have been nice). I wanted to show people the types of images this lens produces natively.

The second of each pic is a 100% crop.

My 30mm 1.4 is slow focussing and is now REALLY squeaky, anyone have this problem? This is even after the trip to the service center...

I love my sigmas and im not trying to sway anyone towards another brand. Should I send it back to sigma in hopes that they will correct their mistake 2x over? I LOVE this lens, but it limits me due to its abnormalities. I would love to have a FAST, quiet, sharp 30mm 1.4...

Mine only squeaks if I point it straight up in the air...I can live with it. If in doubt, send it back. Otherwise you will always have a nagging feeling in the back of your mind each time you use it.

So does mine, also when I point it straight down. Hasnt affected the focus speed one bit though.

Don't think I've ever heard mine squeak. Always fast and quiet. I'll check for infinity focus next time I put it on... (unless I forget, which I tend to do rather often).

I just sent mine in today for the same squeaking problem (I've taken about 400 pics over the last 5 months). Hopefully they can resolve this issue on the first try.

Hi,

I went through all the pictures today, there's alot of talented people on here! I have a quick question, Where can I send my lens if it has a focus problem and any other problem. I'm in the US. A phone number and address would be great. Thanks!

I thought someone said it was either in NYC or Jersey. Someone had commented on the fact they drove by and they did the service while they waited. Maybe that person will see this and give you the pertinent info!

I also wanted to know if the 30mm 1.4 lens is out of warranty, what would the charge be?
