I want to thank all the photographers who have contributed here. Thank you very much for giving me ANOTHER thing to buy

;) :p

Actually I was thinking of buying this lens for WA street stuff. Your posts just pushed me over the edge.

Now I want the Canon 10-22, 24-105L, Sig 150-500 and the Sig 30mm. Time to start saving. :)

Won't someone fly to Hong Kong to buy my 17-55?! ;)

Those shots look slightly backfocused?

In number 3, the guitar neck looks more in focus than the vocalist. I think.

I also wanted to know if the 30mm 1.4 lens is out of warranty, what would the charge be?

my 30mm 1.4 was out of warranty and I had no receipt. I just sent it in and they dealt with it for free.

they did quote me 80-180$ over email before seeing the lens though and that was with damaged AF and back focus problems.

You are definitely in a minority. I own the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 and I love it. I love it so much that I also got a Sigma 10-20 recently and I love that too.

I got my Sigma 30mm today. Had to send it back to Amazon. Couldn't get it to focus on anything - short or long. The only crisp shot on my Xti I could get was at f8 and infinity. I had to break out my Canon 50 1.8 to make sure I wasn't going crazy. Again things were sharp.

Oh well, going to try one more time. If this next one doesn't work then its going to be the Canon 28mm 1.8 for me.

BTW, I loved the feel, weight and focus speed. Too bad it was a dud. Wish me luck for the next one!

my 30mm 1.4 stays on my 40D all the time
i find the 50mm too narrow for everyday/all around use

i think 30mm on a crop body is more fun to use than the 50mm

ALaS

I see. I really want both lenses. I feel like the 50 would serve me better since my 17-55 is mosty mounted. Or I might just skip it nad go 85 for portraits, but I feel its too long indoors. I need to feel both lenses again.

grizzy
26th of August 2008 (Tue), 17:30

I thought I would rarely use my 30mm f/1.4 or 50mm f/1.4, but I find I use them all the time! I like the clarity/sharpness, but I REALLY like not using a flash very often. I use both the 30mm sig and the 50mm canon more than I use my megabucks (to me) 16-35mm f/2.8L, even though it's only one stop higher.

ALaS

Not using a flash is the key...so nice to use available light.

You know, I'm not sure. I usually use the 50mm for portraits, as it works out to a good length for my 40D. I use the 30mm for a general walk-around. The 30mm seems to be a higher quality lens, so it feels better in my hands than the 50mm.

I think f1.4 is sharp out of mine. I use Autofocus all the time on mine - I'm a rubbish judge when manual focusing!

The center is sharpest sharpest at f/4. The border sharpness increases until f/8 (or possibly higher).
http://www.photozone.de/canon-eos/298-sigma-af-30mm-f14-ex-hsm-dc-test-report--review?start=1

I use AF all the time. It's too hard to MF with a small viewfinder and no split prism.

I generally shoot at f/2 or f/2.8 during the day unless I want extreme DOF then I go even wider, and f/1.4 or f/1.8 at night in low light conditions. Even though f/1.4 is already amazingly sharp, I try not to use it wide open as the DOF is very unforgiving - I am afraid I will accidently change focus as I recompose. I use f/8 or above for sceneries.

This lens is freakishly sharp and the colours are amazing. I still want a 35L for my gearbag and also for comparison sake. The CDN price for the Sigma 30mm is $489 and its worth every penny.

Have you read "Without Remorse" by Tom Clancy.

That's my favourite book of his. "Rainbow Six" was good too.

I like the ones with more action.

Oh and nice shots BTW. ;)

bleh, i want a 30 or so mm prime so i could get a wider view on my 40d, since 50mm is a bit tight sometimes. but i know i want FF soon, so i promised myself no more crop lenses. nice pics though!

One of the ONLY reasons I sold mine and went with the 35L is that I own a FF & a crop. For the price, for a crop, it's a bargain for sure.

I'm jelous :) I'm still contemplating on buying a 35L and replacing the nifty with a 1.4 version.

However the Sigma 30mm has only shown its ugly front focus head several times out of my 500 pics I've taken this week.

You did? Who is the lucky individual?!

Every time I looked back on the images I had taken with my first SIGMA ... although AF problem plagued, there was just something about the pictures ... it is subtle... and whatever it is made me give it another go. I have a good feeling about this one though. Here's a couple older ones I don't think I posted here before:

A lot of people seem apprehensive about this lens because they want to eventually buy a FF, but it seems to me that it will never be difficult to sell one of these without losing much money, assuming that Canon keeps making cropped cameras and you have a good copy. But I guess if you can afford a 35L then it doesn't really matter :)

jbkalla

From what I understand, it's quite probable that Canon will stop making "crop sensor" cameras entirely in the not too distant future. Of course, that's completely speculation, and the lens will still be fantastic with the cameras it's with now. In my opinion, the great price and the fantastic build quality make the lens worth it, no matter what happens! Really, I think it's just about my favorite lens!

Stop making crop sensors, and ditch the entire low-budget amateur market ? Even though FF sensors might become cheaper to produce, the required glass for them is rather unlikely to. At least in the near future.

My third copy is on its way to Sigma for calibration. After having two horrendously front focusing copies, the third copy backfocuses, though not nearly as badly as the first two front focused. I decided to keep this one and send it to Sigma, so hopefully it'll come back perfect! Also sent my slightly front focusing 24-60 f/2.8.

The only reason I'm willing to put up with this crap is because the image quality of a properly focused shot is stunning.

How sharp do you guys find this wide open? I just picked up a copy yesterday and it seems a little soft at 1.4, but once I stop it down to 2.8 it's wicked sharp. Is this typical or should I take a walk over to the service center and see if they can calibrate it for my 40D?

It should be pretty sharp at 1.4 and wicked sharp at f/1.8 - f/2

The center of mine is completely useable at f/1.4 and extremely sharp at f/1.8. However it drops off pretty quickly the closer you get to the edges. If you want 100% crops let me know.

Heres one at f/1.4. Wide open with this thing the weird green CA is more of an issue then sharpness. I think i desaturated the green channels in this one to mostly get rid of it.

http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/8085/dsc01392editct3.jpg

at f/2.8. Both of these have had sharpening and basic PP applied.

First time posting photos here.... this is my favorite lens on my 40D, and the one that I keep on it at most times. I am still learning, and shoot fully manual almost all the time, but sometimes I forget to check things like ISO, so I end up taking shots at higher ISO when lower would have worked just as well. Oh well, they still end up ok. Oh, and all of these are handheld. On the first shot (beer steins) I give the full shot and then the 100% pixel view. I tried playing with Unsharp Mask in PS but did not get great results (I always shoot in RAW so they come out of the camera unsharpened). Anybody got any suggestions on Unsharp Mask settings for a 40D? That shot had USM, and the Starburst Gourmet photo had USM and white balance corrected in PS. All others are straight jpeg exports from iPhoto.

Gotta be honest here and say my copy doesnt hit the mark everytime. Im positive its not user error. Ive had it for over a year now. I have a feeling it may be my 30Ds. Once i get my hands on the 50D and try it out with that then i can say its not the 30Ds.

When it hits the mark though its amazing - even at F1.4
