View Full Version : Tamron 17-35mm f/2.8-4 Di

Actually not. The very corners are slightly soft at 17mm even at f/8. The situation is better at 24-35mm but some softness is still there. Distortion at 17mm makes sometimes some problems too.
Nevertheless, Tamron is a very good lens for a bargain price.Seems to be a problem with FF cameras and this lens.

I was going to say the same because on my 500D/Rebel T1i, my copy of this lens is very very sharp across the frame. I have compared it to a friends 16-35L and for the price of the Tamron you simply cannot argue.

I do not see any problem at all and with this lens in particular. Just take a look at this comparison. (http://the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=100&Camera=453&Sample=0&FLI=0&API=3&LensComp=391&CameraComp=453&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=4) If this is a problem then Canon L zoom have it too. Or, do you mind my copy of it?

nice capture. its actually not recommended to use a polarizer under...i think...24mm. i noticed when i used one on my 17mm there were darker and lighter transistions in the sky. just the nature of polarizers.
...but correct me if im wrong

Hey guys, i am thinking of trying to pick one of these up. But i have a few questions. First of all, i shoot with a 5Dc. Will there be much vingetting with this lens at 17mm on my 5Dc? Also, it seems i pretty much can only get it used now; is there anything i should look out for or ask about when getting this lens? Last, how is it compared to a Canon 17-40 f/4L? This seems like a great bang for the buck lens if you get a good copy, and i don't know if i can justify the extra $300-400 for a used 17-40. What do you guys think?

little older post here i know, but to answer your question...i shoot it on a 5dc all the time. i love it. vingetting is there at 17mm. not too intimidating though. you can see it more wide open than stopped down. although if you have the hood on wrong it will mess your day up! heres a couple from the lens on a 5dc...
worst case...wide open (there was some bounce flash in this one as well. even with the wide panel on the flash you can see where the light starts to fall off. i think it frames the shot well though so i dont mess with it much.)

Wow. I was looking at L glass for my 5D2, but these images look great! I need something wider for cars. Hmmm

as long as you stop it down you will get nice and crisp images, it you shoot at 2.8 they aren't perfect but still very usable.

2.8 is decently sharp, not great. The real problem at 2.8 is vignetting. Ok for some stuff, terrible for others.

Thanks, I LOVE this lens, its great. The only downside I can see is that the CA is a little worst when compared to the 17-40L. But who really cares?
To the person asking about my CPL. I got a Hoya Pro1D LPF. I actually used it with a Lee system screwed in front on the above photo at Middle Rock. It vignettes for 2mm or so but still very usable.
Here it is in action in all of the following photos I took today. Some photos also feature a Lee Holder w/ Hitech NDs aswell.

Thanks Ben I asked about the CPL, can you remove the vignetting in PP? I love the one from Flatrock lookout.

Nope, its a vignette from the filter holder. I crop it out. I more often then not find myself cropping corners anyway, so its not too bothersome.
I will upload a pic sometime to show you.

Got this on my 5D. Vignetting and corner sharpness are pretty awful wide open but is not too bad at 5.6, which is probably where you'd be at if you were shooting with the 17-40L...I couldn't find any corner crops of this lens when I was researching it so I will post some soon.
