Give it up Dan! Anyone with a case of L-itis like you have will never be happy with anything except a lens that has a red-ring around the end!! Don't bother with other brands.......just get a 17-40 and be done with it! (you know I'm right!!)

Thanks for the compliments, it really is a good lens.
I have overlapping lens for this range, I have Sigma 10-20 and Sigma 24-70, but I cannot bring myself to sell this lens, because I think it is superior to both in the 17-35 range (although I have done no empirical tests).

Here is a good review.
http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/tamron_1735_284/index.htm
This review indicates sharp center, but pedestrian edge sharpness on a 1.6 crop digital. Most likely would have faired even worse on a 1.3 crop digital.
Other parameters were ok, but nothing outstanding.
Enjoy!

here are 14 user reviews of the lens, its scores a 9.1 :D

I've been looking for so long for some one to post a full resolution, full size picture from the lense. That way, you really see it's true optical quality. Here's mine, directly from the camera.
I noticed that the shots are not very sharp, even at high aperature... but maybe this is normal to wide angle lense. Some one please tell me if this is normal? And show me their full resolution full size picture?

Those 100% images do look a little bit softer than I'm used to with the lens on my 5D. It's always going to be soft in the corners. Once I get to about f/6.3 it's very very sharp in the centre.

9th of July 2006 (Sun), 19:23
Hey WilG, i'll do that and post it asap....but for now as i am fiddling around with the camera i might know why. I set the camera's parameter to Faithful, which basicly has no sharpness, contrast, saturation or anything applied to them with the picture i've shown to you.
Now that i set back to Neutral, iam getting a much sharpner image. Which make me happy to see!! What a break through, it's late now but tomorrow i'll go outside and shoot some test picture to see the changes!
Thanks!

(or will a 3rd party hood fit?)You would probably have to go through a dealer. You are in chicago so try Central or Calumet.
I use my hoods quite a lot because I never use filters. So I find them essential.

I was initially going to get a Sigma 17-35, but found this lens here... http://www.onestop-digital.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=46 and knew i had to go for it. That's not much more expensive than they go for secondhand here in the UK.
Off to Cyprus in 2 weeks time, so should have it by then and will post up a couple pics when i get back. :)

I shouldn't lol, but i am. I thought it would sell pretty quickly since i have it pretty cheap(220shipped). No its not my only lens. I have a 50mm also(will be picking up a 100-300 sigma lens here soon also). The only reason i'm selling it is because i'm going to buy the 17-50 tomorrow. I like the range of my current, but i hate it at the same time  A little bit more range and i'll be okay.

Anyone else find the AF to be insanely slow, and noisy? I mean slower and noisier than the 50 1.8 II, which people whinge about all the time, AF-wise.
Here are some more of mine anyway:

Flickr kinda makes them look soft, but they're not at all, when focus actually hits it's mad sharp.
I've been contemplating selling this to fund a Tokina 10-17mm fisheye but I'm not too sure, I'll probably end up keeping this and also buying the fisheye when I've worked up some funds, I kinda like this one as a walk around lens.

I LOVE this lens! It's wonderfully sharp and has great colors for the money.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v109/angryhampster/cars/031710-kraut01.jpg
I owned Canon's 17-40 for a year. I'd say this lens is absolutely comparable, if not equal in most circumstances.
100% crop of another picture, only very slight (100, .3) USM applied.

If I can find a hood for this thing, I'll be hanging onto it for a long time. Not terribly fond of the build quality or how dark the corners can get, but for the price you really can't come close.

Mine broke three months after I bought it, so I sent it off to Tamron (six year warranty!) and it took them another three months to fix it and send it back. As soon as I did get it back, I sold it.

stephen, I love your photos!
I use it on my 5D2 and I love it! I don't shoot ultra-wide often, so I didn't want to spend a lot of money investing in a 17-40L, so I got this Tammy. It's wonderful!

I just picked up one of these. I am stoked. I have been looking for one for a while. I am coming from the Canon 20-35mm USM. I wanted the extra wideness from this. I am loving it so far. Mine has a standard size filter, and it vignette badly at 17mm. I guess I need to get a thin filter.

I just received the lens today. The AF in comparison is "quieter" and slightly slower than my Tamron 28-75mm. I could only find one video one youtube with this lens mounted on a Nikon body and the AF is WAY faster than mine. Is everybody else's AF similar to this video? or it's faster because Nikon has build in motor?
Here's the link to the Nikon:

I've been using one for quite a long time, first on a 10D, then on a 5D, now on a 5D2. Operationally, the only things that annoys me is the lack of full time manual focusing (you can do it, but the lens complains audibly) and the fact that the focusing ring spins when you focus automatically. I'm also annoyed by the variable aperture--I shoot manually (especially with studio flash), so I have to make note of when the aperture changes as I zoom. In my lens, it's at 28mm...although it might be different in other lenses.
On a 24x36mm camera, the fact is that it's noticeably soft in the corners, especially above f/5.6. But wait...all zooms in this range are noticeably soft in the corners, especially above f/5.6. I have not found any consistent difference in image quality between this lens and the Canon L 17-40.
The Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 L II is, I'm sure, a better lens, but if I were in the market for that lens, I would not even be considering the Tamron. This focal length range isn't a "money lens" for me, so I'm not interested in paying that much for what would essentially be a niche-use lens for me.
It's a lightweight lens--a plus. It's not weather resistant (which the Canon lenses are, with filter attached), and I suspect it's not as physically robust.
I can't see focusing speed as a significant factor in a short lens like this--lens movement distance is extremely slight, compared to a telephoto lens. Like most 3rd party lenses, it may seem to have more difficulty finding focus, but you would have to compare it directly to other lenses in this focal length.

Yes, I am quite sure it doesn't compare to an L lens. But, it works fine for occasional use. I really like using it indoors with a flash.

Nice shot! This lens is incredibly sharp!

Actually not. The very corners are slightly soft at 17mm even at f/8. The situation is better at 24-35mm but some softness is still there. Distortion at 17mm makes sometimes some problems too.
Nevertheless, Tamron is a very good lens for a bargain price.
