Great shots, Malcolm, clear and sharp.

I managed to get the lens out for a half hour over lunch followed by another half hour at the park on the way home. I'd say it performed extremely well and was fun to use. AF is fast and accurate as I even managed to track a dragonfly in flight. These shots are all with the 1.4x TC and handheld, ISO 200 - and I even threw in a duck for everyone. Click for larger/info:

Someone smack me. I just had the craziest thought. I thought I might be able to afford this lens if I got a second job and saved for the whole summer. I think I may give it a try. I was planning on getting a 1d mark II and a 24-70L and 2 ab1600's with skyports light stand etc...before I went away to school for shooting sports. Maybe this lens would be a better idea...Uggghhhhh.. Maybe next year!

Update on this. I got that second job so I can buy this lens before the end of the summer. I got one ab1600 and I am waiting for the other one. Went with PW's instead of skyports, bought a 40D, etc... This site is bad for me. Keep posting pics guys! It is going to be l a long 3 months working 70 hours a week for me. I am sure it will be worth it. I might need to consider a 2x TC as well! lol

Have I already posted this one? Because I think it is a true testament to how well this lens takes the t-cons....both of them.

EF 300mm f/2.8L IS with the 1.4X II and the 2X II t-cons on the 1D2n.

840mm f/8 on a tripod.....at sea level.

Yeah, I think it's around here somewhere. Hopefully it's not in this thread twice.

I really should go try this lens with just the 2X II t-con. That's the t-con that seems to soften just about everything. I bet the 300/2.8 handles it just fine.

The 2x TC is the one that I use with this lens. It tends to be a bit soft, and I typically take several shots with it so I can grab the sharpest of the bunch. But I've gotten some great shots with it!

Trying to get my daily fix of photography, I wandered over to one of my lunch hour stomping grounds for a whirlwind tour with the 300mm. This time I didn't actually use any TCs. The 300 is awesome; it captures architectural details, picks subjects out of a crowd and can even do macro duty, of sorts, when necessary. Click for larger/info:

Good to see the lens being use for something non wildlife / sports.

Question to owners, which 2x converter works best with the lens. I've read a few comments on dpreview saying the kenko 2x works better on this lens than the canon version.

^ Thanks! Yes, it's very versatile, love it!

I've used the lens more with the 1.4x than without, so far. It also takes the 2x very well. Unfortunately on the day I was shooting with the 2x, the haze in the air was absolutely monstrous... So I can't really say too much either way, but the results were good. This lens truly does take TCs extremely well.

Have you bothered with getting a third party lens cap and lens cover for it? Also do you find an air of jealousy whenever you take the lens out I shall be calling mine big bertha.

I have the neoprene lens bootie, which is better than the Canon "cap" save for one thing; it doesn't have anything solid to protect the front element; it's just neoprene - the Canon cap at least has a semi-rigid plastic disk. I believe I'm going to pick up either a Tupperware lid or a Don Zeck lens cap fairly soon.

As for LensCoat, I'm not convinced - I don't really need it for my kind of shooting as far as camouflage. I refuse to pay $80-90 for it new... So I'll bid my time and scoop one up used at some point and use it merely for protection. Wouldn't mind a "digital camo" version. :)

There is NO hiding this rig. Three times in as many days I got the following comments:

"Mike... Look at HIS camera..." (Wife said to husband on wooded trail)
"I like your camera!" (Woman walking dog in park said to me)
"That's a really nice lens..." (Woman at local historical site said to me)

...besides the "holy sh*t!" comments at work when I whipped it out. ;)

I think I saw the Don Zeck lens cap - just hope they either ship to the UK or there is a reseller over here.

Yeah, exactly - it's not like my camera, tripod, clothes or anything else is camo and I don't spend my days sitting in blinds... So the camo cover is pointless, to me. I'm very careful with my gear but would probably feel at least a little more at ease with a LensCoat - but like I said, I'm not paying $90 for it.

You might be able to pick up the Zeck cap from someone that will ship it to you...

That line definitely sounded like a pickup line... She wasn't married, young, jogging around the park a bit in a half-assed sort've way. Stopped near me and let that line fly. I later stopped near her and said, "that's a cute dog." ;)

I posted this earlier in the Birds forum, but this is as close to a 100% crop as I could get of an osprey flying overhead.

I was struggling with a 1D Mk III and a 300 f/2.8 IS on a monopod -- for this sequence of shots I had to hand-hold the whole rig overhead!

A little worried about the size, although I am a big strong guy, I just worry about it, I just hope the size wouldn't keep me from lugging it around, my bag is already like 35Lbs :)....And like Double N was saying....I mean, I already get comments non stop with the 1D series bodies and just about any lens....But this would take it over the top. I don't like the attention....But man, the versatility and IQ this thing is capable of with the TC's...

Congrats...

If you don't want to get the Don Zeck cap, find an Ikea near you and get a set of Reda "tupperware" bowls for $1.99. It has 5 bowls and 1 of them fit the 300's hood perfectly.

Or get a Op/Tech hood hat - I don't like this as it requires 2 hands to put on.

I just got 2 sets of Reda yesterday, one for me and one for the wife haha :)

^ I would suggest the LensCoat "hoodie" over the Op/Tech version as it has a stiff piece of plastic embedded to further protect the front element when the hood is reversed (or off). The Op/Tech is just neoprene and does not offer this extra protection. But yes, they're typically a two-handed operation, but quickly applied and taken off.

I'd suggest the Tupperware lids or a 120mm cap from B&H. $60 for the Zeck is nutty, and it's ugly to boot.

I have to say I think the Zeck cap is worth the mola, it fits like a glove and offers protection without the cap touching the glass. If you your going to plash out on the lens, I don't think 60 bucks is that much. Just my opinion!

Alternatively you can cut out a piece of plastic and put into the op/tech lenshood and voila, you have a home-made Lenscoat hoodie - that was what I did. :D

You can also fit the Reda lid inside the op/tech hood as well and make it a tight fit.

Couple of pics

1. Reda lid inside, Op/tech hood over it. I have a hood coat too so the op/tech stretches out more.
http://www.sonnycao.com/web/misc/hood.jpg

2. Just the Reda lid - it looks good and fit nicely. You can put it on with one hand and press around the rim to have a nice airtight fit. I like it

I bought the lens used and it came with it. I don't think it's part of the lens coat set as I asked the owner and he said he bought it separately from one of the forum, maybe from naturescape.com.

But, on the other hand the setup in the above pics looks pretty sweet to me:)

Another question.....Do you guys have the drop in polorizer? Do you use it? Is it decent? Can I use any 52mm filter?

I bought the lens used and it came with it. I don't think it's part of the lens coat set as I asked the owner and he said he bought it separately from one of the forum, maybe from naturescape.com.

Ahh, okay. I'm debating picking up a LensCoat myself. Not so much for camouflage but for protection as I'm usually out in the wild with this thing; whether in the woods or on the beach. Much like the Zeck cap - if you're plunking down this kind of coin on a lens, then why skimp on the accessories? But $80-90 for a bunch of neoprene makes me a little nauseus. :D

I have the 52mm dropped in CPL and used it once only. It works just like any other CPL :)

The dropped in CPL replaces the filter holder on the 300, you pull one out and insert another in. This one has a little wheel that you can turn to tune the polarizer.

There's another filter holder for gelatin filters but I don't know if 52mm cpl will fit.

The hood coat is pretty useful especially when hand holding and you need to rest it on a fence or something to stabilize it a bit.

I hear you about the lens coat :) My mom probably can sew up a few round neoprene in a few minutes haha.

...Another question.....Do you guys have the drop in polorizer? Do you use it? Is it decent? Can I use any 52mm filter?

Yes, the Canon 52mm PL-C Drop-In Polarizer. I definitely use it, but I'm a fan of CPLs for one thing; and shooting seabirds in the summer 'round here is often screwed by rather hazy atmospheric conditions. It's an ingenius little design, IMO - with the wheel on the outside of the lens to rotate the filter sitting inside. It's a bit pricey, but no more than a good (Heliopan/B+W) CPL. If you watch eBay/POTN/FM long enough you can jump on one.

They also make a 52mm threaded filter drop-in, but you a) have to be careful that your filter depth still fits into the slot and b) you have no way to rotate the filter (IIRC). These are good for using regular 52mm filters, like NDs.

Exactly, with it you don't have to worry about stuff like that so much. I think any of us could make a neoprene cover! Measure, subtract an extra 1/8-1/4" and cut - then glue the ends together with KrazyGlue(TM). The extra trimming will ensure it's snug. I may just do this. Heh.

Be thankful you're not in the UK, they want £80-90 for a lens coat!!
Got mine from the POTN shop delivered to the UK for $100. Love mine purely from a protection point of view, keeps the body and hood looking 'NEW'

^ No worries, the 300 is quite handholdable so you can get away with not having a Sidekick. :D

But I'd seriously look into a Kinesis (or similar) bag to take the rig into the field. I have the L321 with shoulder harness and M330 pouch for the extenders, PL-C, remote release and spare battery/CF. The 'pod slips into the pocket on the side. I grab my 1D2N and this bag and I'm ready to rock for a day in the wild.

I have to agree, the LensCoats do look badass... I haven't seen the "digital camo" version for the 300 yet, I'd probably go for that one. :D

The L321 is actually PERFECT for containing the 300L mounted to a body, hood ready to shoot. Unfortunately, I had hoped to have the 1.4x TC mounted on occasion, but as luck would have it, then it would be too tight. Although Kinesis makes a slightly deeper top flap for an additional $56 that would allow for that. If I reverse the hood I could have both TCs stacked on there if I wanted to, but it kind of defeats the purpose of me getting this particular bag (e.g. "ready to shoot").

The Lightware and Tenba bags are great bags. A little "boxy" in appearance, but slick. I ruled them out in my search for a couple of reasons, one of which is they don't offer the options of carrying like Kinesis; I can carry it in-hand (hand strap), off the shoulder with that strap (removable) or on my back via the optional harness. I believe they also don't allow for a "ready to shoot" combo. I don't recall exactly anymore.

Truth be told, if the Think Tank Photo "Glass Taxi" could take the 300L ready to rock I'd have gone for that without batting an eye. THAT is a sweet bag. But I hate flipping the hood constantly.

Aight. Here's one from yesterday. Something of an unorthodox use of the lens as it helped me overcome some of the challenges of the shot. Subject is standing 10 feet off the ground on a much larger elephant sculpture. I didn't have a ladder so I just put the 300 on and walked back about 60 feet.

Even though this image is slightly backfocused it should look great up to 8x10.

2. Just the Reda lid - it looks good and fit nicely. You can put it on with one hand and press around the rim to have a nice airtight fit. I like it

The 300 was more than adequate. I didn't use any TC that day. I had the 40D + 300 2.8 on one shoulder, and the 5D + 24-105 + 580EXII on another for closer shots (which still took some great aerial pictures!).
Only bad thing about that day, is that my lips are now slightly chapped from the wind

I saw lots of guys with 100-400s, one bloke with a 28-300, and others with 70-200s.

I had a 70-200 2.8 IS in my backpack that didn't come out once.

It might be a bit tight. The lens is quite fat and you don't want it crammed into a bag. Take a look at the Think Tank glass taxi. It will easily hold the lens, converter mounted to a pro size body. It is way better built than any Tamrac or Lowepro and doubt anyone else offers a bag built to such a high standard. It comes with backback stye straps, harness and a traditional shoulder strap. It can be reconfigured inside to fit say a 70/200 mounted with up to 3 lenses or flash. You can also use add on modules to carry more gear.

The 300 2.8 plus full size body is quite heavy; I wouldn't carry on one shoulder so the flip feature is not appealing with a heavy rig like this.

Quick question for those of you who have stacked the 1.4 and 2x extenders. Do you still have autofocus? I tried this with my 200 and 1.4 kenko + Canon 2x II and it wouldn't focus. It kept on hunting and not focus. Should I just pick up a Canon 1.4? Btw, I'm using a 1DMKIII. Thanks.

Yes AF still works, and this is using a 10D.

With a Canon 2x tc

Little difference to sharpness, that's for sure.

The AF will work on the Mk III with either a Canon or Kenko set (the Mk III AF works up to f/8). However, less light comes into the camera, so if you're in a low light/low contrast scene the camera will naturally have a harder time focusing with the TCs, and it sounds like this might be the case here.

My other observation about shooting with stacked TCs, even with the sharp 300 f/2.8, is that results will be pretty disappointing if you have to closely crop! I know this is probably obvious, but you will do OK if you can get something that fits the frame, much less so if you have to crop a lot.

300mm f/2.8 IS L & 1.4x teleconverter & circ polarizer.

Shot at f/11, ISO 100, 1/160 second. Pocket wizards and Profoto 7B strobe to the model left. Reflector to the right. Could have used a hair light but we had enough work just getting the strip light out on a boom over the water...

The polarizer was only there because I didn't want to run back to the truck.

I was using TC's, i can't remember if i was using both of them or only one, and i don't know where i have read that Canon can auto focus but Kenko can't [if we use both at the same time].

Brand new from BH it's $4100 for the USA version. Imported is a bit cheaper. You can get it new from about $4000-$4100 depending where you go. But you can get a nice minty fresh used lens for $3,500+/-

I am lucky that i bought it when it was about $3400-3600, too bad that the prices are increased about $200-600 on lenses and so.

I wouldn't be surprised if the prices keep going up. I just paid $3600 for a 3 month old one. Probably a little high for a used one but it's brand spankin new, or so I'm told. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I've seen them down as low as $3200 but they were pretty abused.

I have used my Canon 300mm F/ 2.8 and it is the best lens I ever used. I bought a F. 4.0 first and once I got my F.2.8 I have hardly used my 4.0. I am sadly moving and closing my sports photography business and selling most of my equipment, so both of those lenses are up for sale if your interested in purchasing. Email me at cas3021@aol.com to discuss. THX

The new 5D will have to push this back a few months at least. Or at least till I find it cheap enough :p

Oh no, not again! I had just pursuaded myself that the 70-200 was the way to go after months of persuading myself the spend was worth it. How long do you think it is going to take me to justify THIS lens!! :-) ;-)

Hi, not sure what you usually take pics of but 70-200 2.8 IS is good lens, good as good but not excellent, if you dream about 300mm 2.8 IS go for your dream lens.

It might be a bit tight. The lens is quite fat and you don't want it crammed into a bag. Take a look at the Think Tank glass taxi.

Thanks for the excellent advice. My 300 is now happily being carried about in its Glass Taxi. The clincher was that I can attach some of my Lowepro Sliplok bits to it. That means I've got one bag that can easily carry the camera attached to the lens (with the TC if required) and my binoculars and small spotting-scope (or a second lens).

I was so impressed I decided to buy their Airport Acceleration. I'm off to Portugal this weekend and the AA can pack most of my gear into something that's OK for carry-on. The Glass Taxi will be getting packed in my hold baggage so I can use it while I'm there.

A couple moon shots tonight with the 1DM3 and a 1.4x TC.

I shot these at a stop apart in shutter speed -- with the first one I exposed it to be about "medium" to retain highlight detail, with the second about +1 EV. Just wanted to compare the results.

I used Lightroom to approximately even out the exposure, and to add some contrast and sharpening -- no Photoshop used.

Enjoy!

Both 100% crops:
