From a wander around town yesterday. It's not the first choice many would go to for a walk around lens, but I love it!

Uhh, yeah... It's not that much, when you consider someone may carry an 85L, a 50L, and a 24L, added together equates to even more than the price of the 300L.

It just shows that the lens doesn't specifically have to be used for sport, or wildlife photography.

Where do you suggest I use the lens?

Ahh, yeah fair point. I'm usually very particular with where I go also, but fortunately when those shots were taken I was with 6 other photogs in a group so I felt safe enough to be able to use the lens.

I went out on a wildland fire with the 300 for the first time. The smoke and dust was thick at times, but the 300 locked focus quick and accurately.
Here's a shot as we were wrapping up the day.

With a 2x TC, handheld, harsh light...nothing serious but nice to practice. Maybe me but I find it very hard to handle this lens at 600mm on a 50D, regardless of shutter speed. Maybe I ask too much ;)

Great shot, and you are definitely not alone. With my use of this lens, with or without a TC, a sturdy ballhead-mounted monopod was my bestest friend. Note this and other big lenses at sporting events -- monopods are pretty ubiquitous, and for wildlife they are very handy as well -- portable, and a good ballhead gives you flexibility, and you can carry the 'pod, camera and lens over your shoulder while you are trekking around.

I have a .3 ND and threaded drop in holder that I bought from a fellow POTN member.

FWIW, I'm extremely pleased with the results. I often shoot prop-driven aircraft so being able to keep my settings around 1/125 @ f/8 instead of f/11 allows me just a slightly shallower DOF. I'll probably add a two-stop eventually so I can get to f/5.6.

I've tossed in the CPL on occasion. Being an idiot I usually forget to grab it on the way out though, that's the biggest problem of having to many bags.

Rakesh, there is a good article on tigers in India in the June issue of Outdoor Photographer. The guide says that the chances of seeing tigers in Bandipur is relatively low, here are his relative ratings:

High
Bandhavgarh
Kanha
Ranthambore

Medium
Corbett
Kaziranga
Nagarhole
Pench
Periyar
Tadoba

Low
Bandipur
Dudhwa
Satpura
Sundarbans

Unlikely
Panna
Sariska
Simlipal

Here is the link to the full article, its worth a read:

I have been to India several times on business and always bring some camera gear but never long lenses; it would be great to do so to shoot wildlife sometime. I will be in Bangalore later this fall, any photo opp suggestions would be appreciated.

Man thats hard, we spent 2 days in Ranthambor and managed to see 6 tigers, 1 on day 1 and 5 in the afternoon drive on day two, cubs with mother but they were quite old and not fluffy and cute ;) another tiger was spotted on another track and the driver (and most of the park) turned up there. Wish I had the 300 then, not a dicky 100-400 that couldnt focus for toffee. Loved India! Dear Randy

Yes, sighting of Tiger and other predators is very high in the area you mentioned and listed in outdoor photographer. But seeing tiger in south is very special.

It is not like that I've not seen tiger in south but everytime when I saw tiger for some reason or the other I was not carrying my gear. Once I saw four tigers on highway inside Bandipur forest but the time was around midnight when I was on night patrolling.

Please let me know your exact dates of visits to Bangalore and then I can suggest you and if found possible then we may plan a trip together.

No, not right, i buy only the best lens and i know i will not sell what i buy high end items to regret selling or buy it again, this is not learning, this is a stupid idea/thing to sell something and buy it again because finding out it was a great item that shouldn't be sold whatever reasons. ;):p

Ah, if only we were all perfect. Then again, if it meant being arrogant with it, perhaps not.

I don't know if you have to sell something to buy another, because i thought most members here or online are rich enough, i am not rich, and i also would like to buy many much more things but i can't until i sell something, so i don't buy anything until i can afford it, but to sell perfect excellent gear to buy another gear i feel it is not a good idea, i have few friends who sold something excellent to buy things less excellent, and i was hoping it is for business, but too bad they did for fun only.

I am very sorry to call it as a "Stupid", but if someone for example sell 400 f2.8L IS and then he go to buy it again because he found it was a great lens and why he sold it before i don't think it is a wise decision, what make one to sell for example 200 f2L IS which perfect the go to buy it again? how could he was able to afford it first time then sell it for something else then he was able to afford it again.

Again, i will never sell anything of my current gear because it was difficult for me to afford them first time, so i can't be sure i can afford them again after the prices are increased a bit, i now look for new things only, and really i want to buy many great excellent things as well but i can't afford them, so i don't want to sell my current gear to get new things, i am not in need reason anyway.

No offend at all here, say this stupid or even crazy idea for people who really deserve to be that way [i am one of them].

The 2x will be fine. Though I'd go for a 1.4x if possible. If not, no worries - the 300mm takes to the TCs probably better than any other lens. They were made for the Big Kahunas.

Love #2^^^^Very nice^^^^

So, my new, (used USxx) 300mm came and I noticed something that I didn't recall happening with the UWxx date code I previously owned. I keep switching off the IS with my index finger. Did they change the design? Or, maybe the switch is just easier to slide in this older copy? Does anyone else have this problem? Anyone have a solution besides, say, gaffers tape?
Other than that it's very very nice to be shooting it again...I forgot just how sharp and colorful it was.

I used to have this problem until I bought a Lenscoat for it. It covers the IS switch with clear plastic. It's still possible to flip the switch, but much harder to do it accidentally.

I think you'll like what you get pairing this with a 50D.

Well now I have to wait a little while to add the 7D to my bag but I figured glass before another body was the way to go! I still want the Canon 2x as well but my bank account needs to recover first. LOL

Just got the 50D and 300L myself, it's a really nice combo, tracks pretty good, IQ is simply awesome. I have a real hard time telling the difference between the 50D and the 5Dmk2 IQ when shooting with the 300/2.8IS.....and that's a good thing:) I noticed the 5Dmk2 locks on faster with less hunting using the center point in one shot, whereas the 50D has better luck tracking in Servo.

Oh so good to hear! Although not a surprise! I have not heard anyone yet say they did not absolutely love this lens. I figure pairing it with a 50D and also a 1.4x should keep me quite happy. I can't wait to get a 2x as well. Have you tried that yet?

No, I will have the 1.4x tomorrow and will grab a 2x in the next month or so (just spent 5K on equipment, like you, need to let my bank account recover) But, last time I owned the 300 i had a 40D, the 1.4 had no effect on IQ at all, the 2x did soften the images a little, but "little" should be put into perspective...Meaning, the IQ dropped to about to the 70-200 2.8IS level....Which is pretty darn good still:)

Well there still appears to be one place left on the web you can still get this lens at it's former price new:
http://robertsimaging.com/stock/Camera%20Lenses/Primes%20(Telephoto)/Canon/EF%20300mm%20f-2.8L%20IS%20USM%20(2531A002).jsp

Looks like the price is good until 9/28

Someone else posted this place in another thread and they appear to be honoring the old Canon prices until 9/28.

I just thought I would pass this along if anyone else wants to beat the price increases.

I considered the 1.4x a "must have" for this lens, but I was never quite satisfied with the 2x on anything, including the 300. I think it was because I was always reaching too far with it -- of course, how can you not do that with anything:)!

But there are so many wonderful examples of the 2X on this lens showing beautiful results in my eyes. Many are in this thread on previous pages.

Yeah, I've posted some myself:)!

Not that you can't get some great shots but it can be challenging. Part of the problem for me is that most of the shooting I did with the lens was trekking along with a monopod as opposed to a tripod, and other times hand-held. Eventually I just figured that if I really needed 600mm I'd just have to save my nickels and dimes for the actual lens...

Well if I use a mono-pod or tripod when at 600mm like a friend of mine does with this lens if I am 1/2 as successful as what I have seen I will be happy. A 500mm and 600 mm are so hard to travel with.
