I am little confused re the following:

a. Do the Canon Extenders multiply the telephoto reach? I mean if a 2X Extender is attached to a 300mm lens; does the combo produce the same reach as a 600mm tele?

b. Or the extender just magnifies the tele image as it’s done by the so called digital zoom on point & shoot cameras!

Clarifications would be highly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

tonylong
13th of January 2010 (Wed), 23:24
The TC optically magnifies the output of the lens. They create an image that is the equivalent of the focal length x the magnifier, although they don't actually magnify the focal length, of course. It's more like using a magnifying glass.

So, in answer to be, there is not "digital zoom" effect going on.

Hi Tony, nice to see u here. As I understand your explanation; the image brought closer by the telephoto lens is being magnified by the extender. Am I right?

If so, the problem is; cropping of images may be hampered. Shooters frequently crop images particularly bird images captured by tele lenses. However, the magnification by extenders may create resolution problem if images are cropped.

May I request your comments on this please? Thank you.

Yes, there is some loss of IQ due to the addition of two layers of glass. If you can fully frame a subject with a TC you are happy. If you have to do a 100% crop of a subject with a 2x TC you are not as happy. But still, the 300 is one of the best lenses for handling the 2x TC.

FlyingPhotog
14th of January 2010 (Thu), 02:26
There is also a loss of light...

The 1.4X TC will cost you one stop = 300 x 1.4 = 420mm @ f/4 max aperture
The 2.0X TC will cost you two stops = 300 x2X = 600mm @ f/5.6 max aperture

Thank u Tony and FlyingPhotog for ur nice explanations. Now, it's clear to me.

Well, I was thinking of getting the EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM and pair it with the 2X Extender to produce a 600mm effect instead of getting the much pricier 500mm. Now, I gotta get back to drawing board and rethink. Thanks again for the valuable inputs.

What body are you shooting with?

I think a lot of birders pair the 300 with a 1.4 TC on a 1.6 cropper. That would get you some reach with out loosing IQ.

In fact for really high quality bird images; some factors must combine. Probably those are as follows:

a. A very fast super telephoto lens
b. A good body
c. Enough light
d. Shooting from close distance (may be in a sanctuary)
e. Shot in RAW
f. PP in CS4 Macintosh

Some outstanding bird images I viewed on the net meet such prerequisites. However, exceptions are also there.

Birding and sports are two fields where everything counts. Good glass is extremely important, and works with a good body. The two combine for responsive AF and good resolving power. Sadly, we are doomed -- we always need more:)! The 300 was a great lens for me when it got the reach -- sadly I had to sell it a year ago.

c. Enough light

This is where you take what you can get. Here, the body plays a part -- I shoot with a 1D3 because I need a high ISO with high resolving power (in other words I have to be able to shoot at ISO 1600 and higher and not fret about noise when cropping closely). Also, I frequently use the 100-400 with a 1.4x TC, meaning I shoot at f/8 or narrower. The 1D series has AF at f/8 using the center point. Also, the 1D series has very responsive AF.

d. Shooting from close distance (may be in a sanctuary)

Of course, a lot of the exquisite bird shots we see are from zoos and other enclosed refuges. I, though, go into the wilds to get the most rewarding captures of the critters, which means all of the above is necessary:)!

e. Shot in RAW
f. PP in CS4 Macintosh

I always shoot in Raw, but given good exposure a jpeg can give a good result. Raw is less about shooting birds and more about getting the best overall image quality.

Software can play a part in the ability to get your subject to stand out -- a combination of basic image quality and then the ability to massage that image in post-processing. I use Lightroom, but Photoshop has high quality tools. Selective sharpening/softening of the background can make a big difference.

Some outstanding bird images I viewed on the net meet such prerequisites. However, exceptions are also there.

This forum has some outstanding bird photographers.

Well, neither CS4 or a Mac are required to get excellent results.

While it's likely that a lot of the images to which you refer have been processed using CS4, I'd hazard a guess that a lot of them were done with CS3 or (horror of horrors) without even using PS at all. And I'd bet money that the majority of those images were processed on a PC.

One thing is very interesting. All the users are actually promoting Canon gears more than the producer itself. Is Canon equally concerned about its users?

Look at the bird in flight shots just above posted by me. I find the AF to be very fast with the 2X; quite honestly I do not really even notice a slow down so it can not be much and I am shooting with a 50D. I was very skeptical also until I tried it; and I could not be more pleased in every way with the performance of this lens both alone and with both the Canon 1.4x and the Canon 2X. I have only used the Canon 1.4 and 2x so I can not speak for any of the others.

I tracked a buzzard with the 7D. Took 20 shots of it as it flew diagonally...too far off to post but I wanted to test the body and lens....I find AF startlingly good and it gve me 20 focussed shots!

The school I went to for photography had a 300mm f/2.8 IS and 2X TC that we were allowed to use for about the first year that we were there. When the dept head changed they decided not to let anything worth $1000 or more to leave school grounds though. Now they have a $4500 paper weight. I look forward to hopefully being able to own one of these in the future.

The use of the 2x does slow down the focus enough to make quite a difference when shooting motorsport. However several other factors eg. lighting conditions, contrast of the subject etc, make a lot of difference to A/F performance too. It is fair to say that the hit rate using the 2x is not so good as with the 1.4x, or obviously with no converter at all. What we tend to overlook however is that the A/F system is not really expected to keep perfect focus with a subject which is aproaching the camera at over 100 MPH !! (160KPH) We do expect rather a lot of our equipment don't we ?

If you can find it anywhere else cheaper, I'd suggest you start a church as you will develop a following in short order.

Other than a refurb or previously owned, I'd be shocked (given the recent upward spiral of prices) if it were available for less brand new.

I was lucky i bought this lens when it was cheap, but now i am in very bad luck as i would like to buy at least 3 more lenses and the prices all are way up than what it was since 3-4 years ago, and i have a feeling it will be very difficult to go back to the previous prices.

JC4

It can make a pretty good clunk when IS engages, compared to smaller lenses, as can the speedy AF. All IS lenses behave a bit differently, so I wouldn't worry. Just use it, I'm sure its fine.

2x + 1.4x TCs, stopped down to f/14 for the Moon, f/13 for Mars, on a 5d2. Composite, but I kept the scale.

When paired with the 2x extender, the f number goes up to 5.6 making it at par with the EF 400 f/5.6. Obviously it's much slower than f/2.8. Nevertheless, it should still be as fast as the 400 5.6. And if it is so, it's still great for both sitting birds and BIF like the 400. Comments please.

Nice shots, that is why i shoot football, and that is why i always dream to shoot soccer in Europe.
Yesterday [i mean Sunday] i was shooting a game with 70-200 and i gave my friend to use my 300 on his camera [50D], i know how amazing that 300 is but really i can get more shots with 70-200 because many actions is very close to the goal and me, so i need to move back with 300 all the time, and yesterday for first time i was able to shoot a goal by a player by my 70-200, i will never get that with 300 from my location and it is difficult to change my location in our stadiums.

Canon TCs are matched specially for superteles so I would go with canon TC unless you already have kenko TC. If you do want to use 2 1.4xTCs then use kenko and canon.

300 2.8 plus 2XTC, AF of the 7D handled 19 shots...all sharp.

http://neilburton.smugmug.com/German-wildlife/Forest-dwellers/harefeb1/780919625_4uYs6-O.jpg

Again 2xTC, these two were moving full pelt and I hardly had time to react. Again AF and the 7D were spot on.

The Kenko Pro 1.4x TC is very closely matched to the Canon in quality. Not so the 2x though. Canon is the safest bet, of course.

Have a look through the thread, anything I took with a 1.4TC is a kenko, I do not have nor need a canon as IQ is (many do say) better with the Kenko. No weather sealing though :(

Any recommendations for a backpack/camera bag to carry the 300mm safely?

I just got hold of this lens a couple of weeks back and while it comes with a nice solid "make up" case, its totally useless in the field (which is what this lens is for). I currently lug the lens with the camera attached over my shoulder as I trek (it has a lenscoat covering) but its not safe in case I trip or fall or even turn around too quickly - risking the lens being hit.

I am keen to discover how owners of this lens carry this lens with camera attached in the field. Esp. in a manner which keeps the lens safe of course.

Cheers
Harry

Sure there was a thread about this recently. Anyhow, I have two bags that might work for you. The Thinktank Glass Taxi will take the lens and camera with the hood reversed. You can't carry much else though. The Lowepro 600AW will take the lens and camera with the hood in the shooting position. I's a bit heavier than the Glass Taxi, but it is my preferred solution.

It will hold the 300 hood reversed and still leave room for a body at the top of the bag as well as room for a 100-400 and a 70-200 on either side and more!

These are good when travelling, but when going out shooting I don't normally want to carry all my gear (my Airport Antidote weighs around 15 kg when full). That's what the Glass Taxi and 600AW are for - when I just want to carry the 300 plus camera, which is what I interpreted Harry's query to be about.

Hi Jay! This bag is much too big for me. It looks like I could break my back just lifting all the weight with the gear inside. LOL

Thanks for the suggestion - I may get one if I travel overseas for a photoshoot of wildlife. ;-)

I have this lens but now i am trying to save very very big budget to fund for either 500 or 600, as i plan to travel this year to Africa for Safari, and even with my 300 i feel i want longer, i will buy this long lens only for safari as i don't shoot birds or wildlife in mu country, and i didn't find any place in my country to rent those long lenses.

I really like the 7D. Due to the reach and body weight I feel this camera is ideal for hand held 'in flight' shots. I just wish I had time to get to speed on the new AF system. Something I wish the 1D4 had.

The Brown Shrike, Lanius cristatus is a bird in the shrike family that is found mainly in Asia. It forms a superspecies with the closely-related Red-backed Shrike, L. collurio, and Isabelline Shrike, L. isabellinus. Like most other shrikes, it has a distinctive black "bandit-mask" through the eye. and is found mainly in open scrub habitats, where it perches on the tops of thorny bushes in search of prey. Several populations of this widespread species form distinctive subspecies which breed in temperate Asia and migrate to their winter quarters in tropical Asia. They are sometimes found as vagrants in Europe and North America.

I was driving the golf cart when I suddenly saw this little birdie about 2 meters away. Grabbed the camera and shot it. The little birdie did not even care that I was there.

I am amazed at the noise control of the 7D. Indeed it is the king of APS-C.

Were you testing the 7Ds ISO cause the SS speed was high enough to lower ISO? Just curious.

It was on AutoISO. The camera was set for birds in flight.

My cameracraft for wild life revolves around Time Variable + Auto ISO.

The logic behind this being I want to have one control to speed up or speed down based camera based on requirement.

The bird being so near I was expecting it to fly away.

Ah ok.

Ah I see they improve on Auto ISO to allow it to go above 1600. I have the 50D and auto ISO maxes out at 1600.

I know it flies in the face of 'logic' but once you got your exposure metering in your mind tuned to the scene and having read the manual this is the easiest way to get a well exposed shot.

Now the challenge is learning two new AF systems. The next frontier so to speak.

Then again I may just go on hiatus and go into architectural/interior photography.

After the grassbird we needed a water break so proceeded to the driving range. There I spotted this very unshy fella perching on the rail. Funny how long this fella took his time as I was fiddling with the lens controls to get it to focus appropriately.

Again I am amazed by the 7D's high ISO noise performance. Incredible on an APS-C sensor.
