Hey all. I'm new to posting but have actually been reading and learning from this site for months now. I've just come into some money (Navy takes it's sweet time on those bonuses) i'm looking into getting the above lens for mostly wildlife photography. I know 500mm - 600mm is good but luckily 300mm will get me 480mm on my 20D and I won't be spending near as much;). That and f/2.8 should give me great dof for animals. I'm wondering what people's opinions are on this lens and maybe some example photos if anyone has them at hand. Thanks guys.
Oh yeah, and it would be my first L lens. Could be some trouble ahead for the wallet...

dont know why know ones replied to this. the ef 300f2.8 L is said to be one of the sharpest you can get also it is one of the fastest at focus speed and i belive on a 1dmk2 it is the fastest. a truly great lens depending on what wiled life it may be a bit short to be honest .

I just got the 300f/2.8L IS a week ago. Unfortunately, the weather hasn't been good, so I haven't done much with it yet except some quick shots in the backyard, using a Canon 2x TC.
I still have to "learn" the lens, but so far I really like what I see with the 2xTC. I also have the 300f/4L IS, and that lens with a 1.4TC is terrific, so I expect the 2.8 with a 1.4TC will be even better.
The 300f/2.8L IS a great lens. Using it hand held isn't totally out of the question, but not something I'd want to do; it's heavy. Great on a monopod with IS. I just added a Wimberly Sidekick and a RRS BH-40 ballhead to my tripod. Using the 300 on this setup is terrific.

Just wondering.. I could not see the Exif. (I normally just right click , properties using XP.)
I thought it might have been 1/125. (Not doubting you now you have confirmed it was 1/25, just want to learn!)
(All I know about Exif is that if I use cheaper software to edit , I lose Exif , but Photoshop retains the info. I only ever right click , properties , as it shows me all the info.)

Not with IE in XP. You have to download a third party software, or at least I did, and I have SP2 on my machines. See this thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=141429)I started earlier for a link.
BTW, it shows 1/25 on my computer but EXIF can be altered.

This lens looks like it does some great work. But do you really think it may be too short? After all the 20D has the 1.6 factor and I want to get the 1.4 II extender in the future for this lens and other lenses i hope to be able to afford one day.

If you're concerned about length, you should know that the 300-2.8 does just fine with extenders as well. Coupled with your 20D, you can get some serious reach out of this lens. Here's a crop from my 1DMk2N/300-2.8/2x:

Duck bill cleaning. If you have seen them do this then you know how fast that foot moves and it just looks like the bird is having a good scratch. I've been using the 300 with a 2x TC a lot recently -- it just gets me shots!
The downside is a bit of softness from the TC (and I often have to perch this out of a car window rather than use a tripod), but the double reach beats what you would otherwise need a severe cropping to get.
Here are a few from recent outings:

i've been thinking about renting this lens out for the airshow this summer for the F22 Raptor specifically! anyone think it'll work? or am i best sticking with my 100-400? i'm gonna get a 1.4x as well
If it is the day time [i think it should be for airshows] then use 100-400, i used my 300 f2.8 in Swimming championship in Ajman about 1 year ago, the photos i've got are unbelievable, SHARP out of the camera.

As I promised a shot with the 1.4x and the 2x. A day at the track and in good light with temps in the 50's the camera/lens performed absolutely flawlessly all day. In the past I have noticed when temps get above 70F in sunlight the auto focus has trouble with the teleconverters due to the heat haze. I have shots where the grills on cars look bent etc. Corvette was shot at speed with AI Servo coming towards me thru the corner. The focus tracking is slow to pick up but once it locks on it holds throughout the pan. 300+1.4x+2x=840mm. On the 1DM2N that = 1092mm :p
EXIF does not recognize the 1.4 on top of the 2x and only shows 600mm @f5.6 so this shot would be @f8.
Just a slight crop on both images.

with 2x teleconverter. I think a couple of the bird shots could have been a little sharper with a higher shutter speed, they were all shot at less than 1/160 second.

these are all spectacular pictures. For a little more range, I was considering buying the Sigma for Canon 120-300 2.8. Do you think I'd be able to get similar results with a lens like that? Anyone have an experience with one? Is it comparable? (or is this a whole 'nother thread???)

A lot of people that own this lens really like it, I have seen great shots from it. But also many complain about various issues and I see several sold and upgrading to the Canon 300 2.8. No issues with the Canon.

Something from today: I took a trip to my little local getaway and used my Mk III and my 300 mm 2.8 IS monted on a monopod to get these shots.
The first is full view, followed by a 100% crop and then a 100% crop of another shot.
The first is a tad soft but I still like it, the last is great both in sharpness and in, well, teeth, water drops and all!
This lens is great -- viewing at 100% is the only way to realize how it distinguishes itself. Of 300 shots taken there were only a handful that were out of focus, and I only deleted twenty-something in all!

I don't know. I need a new bird lens replacement. Dropping down $4300 for one at BH (local pickup) seems a bit expensive. :) The word "expensive" seems to be coming out from nowhere whenever I asked the sales person about the 300L F2.8 IS. My other alternatives would be getting a 40D with a 400L F5.6 and I would still coming out saving a lot of money that way. The problem is that all 400L F5.6 are out of stock in most places. BH won't get them until middle of May the latest.

The good news about the 300 (f/2.8) is that it also can play well with the 2x TC, meaning you can get more reach with AF than you can with the 400 5.6. So, you might want to hang in there for the 300, 'cause for the price you get a useable 600 f/5.6!

Wow Scuff, those are awesome.
I got mine yesterday, hit a local nature preserve for a precious 30-45 minutes over lunch today. Got someone clamming and a couple of seabirds... Will post up later.
I am LOVING this lens, especially with TCs.
