I presently use a Minolta Dimge 7i and am thinking of buying a Canon 10D. I already have a Canon EOS 500 with two lenses ,both Sigma AF lenses .
Will these lenses work with the 10D or does it use a different range of lenses. ?
thx in advance for any help

Stuart, you have to be more specific about your gear. But to answer your question about compatability, all Canon EF lenses will work with Canon EOS bodies. This can't be guarenteed of thrid party vendors. Sigma will rechip their lenses to work with newer Canon EOS bodies. Current Sigma EX lenses should work out of the box. I'm not sure how other companies handle this problem.

Thx for the answer Richie .
The lenses I have are a
(1) Sigma 28-80 f3.5/5.6 Auto Focus
92) Sigma APO Macro 70-300 f4/5.6 Auto Focus
Both lenses work perfecltly with my EOS 500 and 600.
I dont know what else I can tell you about them

Sigma will rechip lenses that don't work. They can't rechip all lenses. If yours are really old you ought to contact Sigma direct. They are helpful - well, I can only speak for Sigma in the UK.

The only other thing you could check is the manufacture date of the Sigma lenses. If they were made prior to the year 2000 there is a good chance that you will need to send the lenses in to Sigma for service.

The link above explains it all.

I had a sigma 28-105 F2.8-4.0
Not a very nice lens, but I had it and I decided I would stick it on the front of my EOS33 to see what happened.
Camera locked up as soon as it tried to step the aperture down, and I believe the same happens with the 10D too. It is similar with all older sigma lenses.
Sigma UK charge about £35 per lens to have it re-chipped for updated cameras.

£35.???
So the term"Sigma do this as a courtesy" on the Sigma.com website isn't quite what it might appear ??

I just switched from a Dimage 7i to the 10D. I got the 10D with the very popular 28-135 IS USM lens and the 100-400 L IS USM back breaker. As you probably know, the 10D esseentially multiplies the focal length of any lens by a factor of 1.6x. So, the 28-135 zoom is really a 45-216 when on the front of a 10D, giving a farily similar range to the Dimage 7i for about $400.

If you're going to buy the 10D, you should probably get at least one nice Canon lens to go with it. As for lenses in the $1000+ category, I really must say that I'm blown away by my "L" but still think the 28-135 represents a good 10D starter lens that won't break the bank. Another benefit of buying a Canon lens with your Canon body is that there is no excuse that the store or Canon can give you if the two don't work together perfectly.

One thing I learned from my first day with the 10D (actually, the first day with my Dimage 7i as well): the first charge of the battery won't last very long. Don't panic. After a few charges I've now been going several hundred shots even with the image stabilizer.

I got an answer from Sigma UK to my e-mail and what they is that the cost is £5 to have the lens rechipped if you have proof of purchase . This is to cover the cost of getting the lens back to you.
Better than the £33.99 otherwise.:-))
