Here you go ozziepuppy.
Self-portrait (it's a good lens for full-body shots).

Has anyone here had a chance to compare it to the 28/2.8?

There are so many lenses in this category...
Canon 35mm f/2
Canon 35mm f/1.4L
Canon 28mm f/1.8
Canon 28mm f/2.8
Sigma 30mm f/1.4 (for corp only)
Sigma 28mm f/1.8
Tokina 35mm f/2.8 Macro
I won't even talk about or add the 24mm lenses.

It's very hard to find the right comparisons, but I think that the Canon 28mm f/2.8 gets overlooked a lot because at f/2.8 most people have a zoom lens that can do f/2.8 at 28mm if they are into zooms. If they aren't into zooms, then they probably want the f/1.8 version. The 35mm f/2 is a good compromise as its faster than f/2.8 but not the price of a f/1.8 or f/1.4 lens. I've been eyeing the Sigma 28mm f/1.8 but the size annoys me in comparison to say my 50mm f/1.4 or the 35mm f/2 or even Sigma's own 30mm f/1.4.

This review pokes a lot of holes at the 28mm f/2.8:

Well, I have only had a chance to play around for a little bit since mine arrived yesterday. First of all, as a noob, the "noise" does not bother me at all, so that's good. I thought it would be really LOUD, but it isn't. Have not had a chance to try it with the CP or outside at all. From just messing with it, it seems sharp to me. Can't wait to try it outside. And it is little!

Here's a another sample showing the 5-blade aperture effect on the out of focus highlights. The 35mm f/2 is a 20-year old design so thought you should understand that. I think it's a bargain lens for under $300 and is nice and small for carrying in your pocket.

$399 Canadian is worth ony $314 USD so it isn't really that bad.

Canadian prices are higher because all individuals and businesses pay A LOT of taxes. All this tax gets passed down to the end consumer, one way or another.

I regret selling this little gem. I've been wanting to pick up a 35L but I may grab another 35mm f/2 for two reasons: 1. to make sure I use it enough again, and 2. to avoid buying something 5x the cost(in canada) during the recession.

It makes a great walkaround on a FF but not wide enough for a crop. The 24mm 2.8 is also a great little lenss on FF if you like wider, or a good walkies on crop.

Well, I went to my old spot, the Griffith Observatory to test out a few shots. With the setting sun, I really wished for a hood, but it's still on the way from NY.

Going through a batch of shots, the lens is pretty darn sharp. Not 135mm f2L sharp but pretty darn good. The color temp is a bit cool but oh well, that can be adjusted in processing.

Here is a sample shot at f16 on a 5D. Shot in RAW and processed as I'd normally would. Sorry, if I like a bit more sharpening than some. But this is more real world sample for me.

LOVE IT!!! I had maybe one focus miss which very well could have been me? My only issue is @ f/2.0 the DOF gets deep quick as you move back. So I can see why the 1.4 is so popular because I'd bet that entire stop of DOF will make a difference. But this lens is so small and so light it's a nice change. The FL is also different enough from my 24 and 50 I like it a lot.

very impressive shots, no doubt, but I can speak to the 35L a bit. I have a 24L and I've already noticed the lack of separation with the 35mm because it's limited to 2.0. It's fine if you're up close to your subjects, but as soon as you try to get any working distance at all f/2 and 35mm start giving you more DOF than I'd like at times.... For the money, the f/2 version is a hell of a value, but I can see how some people want/need the 1.4... Personally I bought the f/2 version for a few reasons. First I love overlooked lenses. Second it's size/price/weight is awesome. Third is my wife uses our XSi but hates any of my lenses because they're too big. This lens is smaller than her kit lens and is a nice FL on a cropper as well. But finally I will admit, I got it to test the 35mm waters with a prime. I try to do that taping my zooms to FLs, but the lack of fast apertures means that never really works for me.

I LOVE the f/2 version, but the shallower DOF of the 1.4/L is tempting if money grew on trees. But the size is almost as big a turn off as the size of the pricetag....

I agree Ben, I love the size of this lens. It was perfect FL for me on my 30D when I had a telephoto lens on my 40D. I recently picked up a used 5D but I have not tried this lens on it. I suspect it will be too wide for my needs though, as I used this lens for wide angle performing arts shots. I'll have to test this out soon. I'd considered renting a 35L just to see if the difference was really worth the investment and I may still do that as I really like the 35mm as a walk around FL.

How does the 35mm f2 compare shooting with a zoom lens at the same focal length and settings, f2.8-f8.0? I have the Tamron 17-50mm, besides being alittle faster em I gaining any IQ or focusing speed?

Double Negative
16th of September 2009 (Wed), 13:32
^ IQ probably, but likely not focus speed. The 35mm f/2 uses Canon's original AFD, or "Arc Form Drive" focus motor... Which gives it the "bee in a matchbox" association. :)

If you don't plan on shooting under f/2.8, skip it.

I own both the 35 f/2 and the Tamron 17-50, and I enjoy both, but I use them for different tasks. In bright environments, the Tamron gives me more flexibility. When I need speed, both in af and shutter, especially in limited lighting, the 35 is my go-to lens. Both are plenty sharp.

Same "bee in a matchbox" as the fifty nifty? or a little tamer? Does it focus any better? I not a fan of my nifty which will probably be sold to help fund the 35mm f2 or the 28mm f1.8

I'm looking at using it probably wide open, mostly in low light for weddings and fashion shows, debating if I should pony up a little more for the 28mm f1.8...

SnapLocally.com

The 35 isn't a USM *but* it's pretty fast, and sharper- albeit louder- than the 28f/1.8. I just invested in a Sigma 30 f/1.4, but really like my 35 so much so that I think I'm gonna keep it as a back-up.

Same buzz - though I never really had a problem with the focus. While you can't compare it to USM, it gets the job done. The 35 is exactly like the 50 Mark I (with metal mount and distance scale) in all regards but focal length. Wide open it's not bad - better than the 28 I'd say.

Very comfortable FOV, not much distortion when doing close-up portraits, MUCH more accurate AF than 50mm f/1.8 though buzzy (wasp in matchbox it is :)) and it's quite sharp from f/2.

Just got my copy today and it's razor sharp at F/2 and the focusing noise really isn't that bad. It's not USM quiet but aquires focus super fast so you'll only hear it for a second anyway. Here are two test shots focusing on the driver's helmet. The first is at ISO400 1/125 f/2 the second is at ISO400 1/30 f/4. Both shots were hand held. Taken on my 5D of course.

I have a 5D and 50mm 1.4 at the monent,I am plann,ng to buy 35mm f2 and 85mm to pair it with different ranges I need,But I am not really sure about the optical quality of 35 mm.are you happy it with your 35mm and 5d.how they go along?

I've owned the 35L in the past and I can testify to its absolute greatness, I stopped using it when I got my 1DmkIII however and wound up swapping it out for a 50L (I don't entirely regret it, only partially because the 50L's AF isn't as reliable as the 35L was/is)

That being said, I am very very interested in the compact form factor of this lens. I would love to carry it around with me when I take my 5DmkII w/o the grip and my 50L. It would be great to have a small 35 along with it.

I would also use it on my 40D as well, but probably not as much as the 5DmkII.

I'd really like to see more samples if anyone has them.

Pixel peeper unfortunately doesn't really have any good samples from either the 40D or the 5DmkII. They all look fairly soft or needlessly grainy, could be user error, I'm guessing that's the case.

I just want a small semi wide prime! Too much to ask?

^ Consider the Zeiss 2/35 Biogon ZE... That would make a fine, fine lens.

I had the 35mm f/2 and it was a great little lens. I definitely liked it more than the nifty. Those were my only primes for about five, six years. If you're looking for a small, light, inexpensive lens then it's worth a look. I still have mine for the 1v w/o grip but sold off the nifty.

If you're referring to the ZE mount, it's a Distagon, not a Biogon: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/658553-REG/Zeiss_1762850_Distagon_35mm_T_f_2.html

it's also a whole lot more than I'd really want to pay right now (maybe in the future as it's cheaper than the L)

But what about the Older contax 35mm f/2.8? Is that one any good? I know it's not terribly expensive.

EDIT: If I ever decide I don't like my 50L anymore I will sell it and buy the ZE 50mm f/1.4 and ZE 35mm f/2

I'd look at the Contax 35mm f2.4 Flektogon if you want a nice inexpensive Zeiss 35. Incredible glass, 1:2 macro focusing and reasonably fast. I think you can get them for less than the price of the Canon 35/2

It's built better and focuses more accurately, but mostly because wider angle lenses are a bit harder to make. A 50mm is about the easiest lens in the world to design. For an XTi, the 35mm is a better all-around length, and the 50mm is a better portrait length. So I guess decide which is the better length for you. If you are more on a 50mm f1.8 kinda budget, the 28mm f2.8 is nearly identical to the 35mm f2, but slightly wider and "only" f2.8.

Has anyone compared this to the Tokina 35/2.8?

Wawrzysz
8th of February 2010 (Mon), 05:35
I own tokina 35mm 2.8 and have seen MANY samples from EF 35/2, tokina hunts a lot in low light (much more than my previously used sigma 24-60 2.8 ) it tends to be very contrasty (midtones are not as varied as 35/2) the color is neither vivid nor dull in 35/2.8 - I would say it's real, canon produces vivd color in my opinion. 35/2.8 is sharp - even at 2.8. My copy has poor coatings - much worse than my other tokina 17mm 3.5 pro, so tends to burn highlights. I like 35/2.8 pictures - they look very leica like and have an analog feel to them - and at iso 800 1/40s 2.8 it produces nice late afternoon indoor pics. Can't compare build quality. 35/2 seems more versatile to me - a fine lens indeed.

Good analysis from Wawrzysz.
The Tokina is a macro, so it's presumably sharp even with large apertures and field curvature should be minimal. I expect the AF performance to be worse with the Tokina. Canon 35/f2, while not a macro is a decent close range performer and AF speed and accuracy is good in my sample.

The 35/2 has excellent AF speed and accuracy. The AF is loud, and that causes some people to think it is slower than it really is.

I'm really trying to decide on the 35 f/2 or the Sigma 30 1.4..

Maybe playing with these two interactive charts will help you decide.

Not really, since I have no idea what the charts are showing me. :)

You can slide the aperture value on the left side to see how sharp the lens is at different apertures. The lower value purple is the sharpest. Flatter and lower means the the corners are sharp too.

I saw that as I was digging around the site some more. Does seem like the 35 f/2 has better results..

well.. 30 1.4 is wider and gives u less DOF.... and its quite sharp @ 1.4

thing to consider
