I just ordered another 35f2
My first I sold to fund other stuff but realize I missed the compact, light and fast format of this jem of a lens.
It will be here by the end of the week. Very excited about it.

I saw them. I saw a family of frog jumping around inside too. . . I was about to wipe them out but then they said hello and smiled.

Nah joking man. thanks for the reminder.
Took bunch of pics and they turn just fine. I like the sound. Like those robots I play when I was a kid. lol. I thought AF will be like 50mm 1.8 but this is quite a bit of an improvement. lol

Minimum focus distance is incredibly short, only something like 8 inches. It's amazing for close-quarters work.

Anybody have sample of images of a full body portrait of a couple using a FF sensor? Say from an engagement shoot at f/2? I've been thinking of downgrading from my 35L but I'm interested in how the 35/2 will perform in this sort of situation. I've seen a few in this thread, very nice images everybody but was wondering if I could get some more samples :) thanks

Thank you for answer.

The EF 50 ( L, f/1.4 and 1.8) and 35 (L and f/2) doesn`t have IS but...

the EFs 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 and EFs 17-55 f2.8 have "IS" ;-) and is useful :-D

I'm planning on buying this to fill in the lower end of the focal range of what I currently have. I have a POTN member whos willing to sell it to me and the price of a new one off of B&H and adorama is roughly 329. I'll be saving about 50 bucks if i go the used route. Recommendations?

Has anyone had both the 35mm f/1.4 and the 35mm f/2, and has opted to keep the 35mm f/2 instead of the faster 1.4 lens?

I have the 35mm f/2 which I'm happy with, I am so impressed with it that it's hard to see how the L version could be so much better that I can justify the approx. $1000 difference. I would definitely miss the 35mm f/2 small size if I upgraded.

I did recently. Had the 35L first. Bought the 35 2.0 to compare and decide to sell the 35L.
I also like the small size and the MFD.
But if I was a pro , no doubt in my mind, I would have kept the L; I rate the L a 10 and the 2.0 a 8,5.

I'm glad you replied, I'm not a professional photographer either, so I wouldn't see any return on my investment, as far as money. The 35mm f/2 has very good value for the IQ you can get from it.

Thinking of buying one of these things... anything I should watch out for/should know before buying(won't be buying anytime soon by the way, so not in a hurry here, just asking).
How durable is the lens?

My only real alternatives are the Zuiko 35mm F2.8 and the Samyang 35mm F1.4, and considering the type of shooting I want to do with a 35mm lens, I'd really REALLY like AF.
Wish Canon would refresh their smaller aperture prime lineup at some point. >.>

Canon will almost always elect to repair rather than replace. When you send it in, note that it's not the first time it's been repaired for this same issue.

They haven't refreshed it because they're all still good performers and good money-makers. Like all old-style EF lenses, the 35/2 is heavy for its size with a metal mount. The motor is loud, but fast, and while the front element extends to focus, it does not rotate. Mine hasn't taken a hit, but as long as you didn't nail the front element (see 50 1.4 as a prime example of what happens when you do) then I think the lens would hold up well, long term.

It is not often sharp wide open, but improves considerably by f2.8.

The 35/2 is probably my most-used lens. It has proven reliable in almost all lighting conditions and overall I've been very, very pleased with the purchase. Do yourself a favor and consider buying one direct from Canon as a refurb, like I did, to save a fair bit of change.

got mine a few days ago to pair with the 100mm f/2 USM. am liking the "normal" FOV that it gives on a cropper. will participate in the photo sharing soon :)

He probably used flash - the cat's eyes were probably dilated due to low ambient light and didn't adjust to the flash instantly.

That, or the cat was on a peyote vision quest.

Few things to mention after few days of using it.
AF is louder compare to Nifty-Fifty. Focus ring rotates freely if AF is enabled, which is nice. Fast to focus, because inner tube travels only few mm to focus between infinity and 1.5 meter. To focus closer it has to move much more.
My copy missing focus in bad light sometimes. More compare to Nifty-Fifty. Adding of flashlight helps in the dark.
But in extreme bright backlight it is front focusing some times.
I was focusing at cat's head on this photo:

Well, it's pretty close to the 50mm. But, works better indoors, is more solidly constructed, and is generally sharper wide open. Between the 50mm and 24-105mm in your signature, the 35mm might not be bringing a lot to the table in terms of focal length; but, I like mine for shooting the kids playing indoors or for family get togethers. It's quite situational for me, but I am a fan.

So what aperture were these taken. I'm really thinking I need to take this one for a test drive. I had a Sigma 30 that was crazy sharp. I am looking for something that might be able to compare for use on a 5DII. I am not one to run around shooting everything wide open. If this thing can produce critical eye sharpness like the your second shot by @ 2.8 or so I need one now!

DreDaze

first shot was done f4, 1/160 ISO400 with a bounced flash...second shot was f2, 1/400, ISO800(explains the noise) natural light

here are some 100% crops...i did a bit of processing on the 2nd shot...first is pretty much sooc, but i don't know what i have my settings at to be honest

Thanks for the quick response. I am not sure what to do. I absolutely loved my siggy 30. I would have loved it more if it was a tad wider. I am drawn to the 35 mm length on the FF body. I just cannot bring myself to throw down for the 35L. I wish Sigma had a high quality 35 mm prime for the FF rig.

It works great on FF - maybe a tad soft in the corners wide open, but not really a problem. Here are a couple;

I want the 24-70 for convenience. I think it sucks to take off lenses all the time for different focal lengths. Generally I believe that it's best to have a good range covered by zooms and then adding in primes to compliment.

But the 24-70 is still 1000-1200$

izthistaken
22nd of February 2012 (Wed), 10:25
That's how I feel also, but I do like challenging myself with a prime. The bokeh on a prime is wicked nice though.I want the 70-200, then either a 16-35, or just be done with zooms. Stupid money, hindering everything.

so far, .. just like my previous sig 30 1.4 and ef 28 1.8 it`s so hard to have focus accuracy in first shot.
I need 2nd or 3rd shoot to have a great focus.

I've owned all three of the cheap options for Canon APS-C standards, and so far, this is my favorite.. I dont feel that sense of "hesitation" over the images like i did with the 28mm f/1.8.. I like the contrast and colors and etc coming out of the 35 at f/2... I like how it paints to put it in a simpler term... The 28mm f/1.8 needed f/2.8 for this kind of performance, and at f/2.8 the bokeh could be really weird...

I know, Sounds weird I like the $300 lens more than the $500 one...but hey... Sometimes thats how it works

I really like the 35 f2 on FF. But.... if you're going to stay with a crop body, I'd get the Sigma 30 1.4 - faster focus, a stop faster, seems sharper to me. Also, the differrence between 30 and 35mm DOES make a difference on crop; you have just a bit more "breathing room" for indoor work. Just my two cents - really, you can't go wrong with either lens, though...

He also has an Elan, and I'm not sure how much film he shoots these days, but the Sigma is crop only - not sure if he'll get mirror clipping on the full-frame body.

I do agree, the 5mm difference is more significant than you may think.

Kenj, I find that the EF35 is my most-used lens. I couldn't care less about the focus motor noise, it's well built, focuses amazingly close and is pretty good right from f/2. I'm not surprised you're turning to it more and more.

Ah - good point about the Elan. He won't get mirror clipping on the Elan with the Sigma, but it WILL vignette horribly. Given he has a film body, looks like the 35 f2 is the way to go!

Hey, I appreciate the thoughts, but I'm pretty much a Canon brand lens buyer. I've owned two Sigmas (neither one the 30) but have found that I have better luck with the Canons. When I need wider than a 35, I'll just continue to use my 15-85. Thanks though!

FWIW, while I do really love the Sigma 30 for a cropper, the Canon 35/2 is a better value... Also the Canon focuses a lot closer which is a ton of fun

I am truly hoping that Canon updates this lens soon, along with the 50 1.4 and 85 1.8 (the other two are higher priority on my list)

I already own the 35L which I love, but I would give it up in a heartbeat for a smaller 35 f/2 with USM and good build quality.

Same story goes for my 24L II (I'd probably go back to the 28 1.8 over the new 28 2.8 IS)
