baseball is coming up and thinking 70-200 f/2.8 and when football comes around maybe get the 100-400L does this sound right or should i just get the 100-400L and wait on the 70-200 any advise would help
this decision is giving me a headache

I'd say get the 100-400. It's got a bigger range and IS would be great for low light stuff. :)

I think you might find 200mm a bit on the short side for a regulation baseball field. I like at least 300mm (on a 1D).

IS wouldn't help freeze the action which is required for sports though. So then you are a bit stuck for the shoots where it gets darker.
If you know it will all be daylight shooting, the 100-400 is a good invertment.
If you know that there will be a lot of night shooting look for an F2.8 lens (sigma 120-300 F2.8 or Canon 70-200 F2.8)
If there is going to be a mix the either the sigma 120-300 or the sigma 100-300 F4 EX lenses will do OK too

thanks everybody its all during theday so i guess "ll go with 100-400 thanks for the replies
