-That's almost straight out of the camera. Very light tweaking (mostly just a bit of sharpening) and of course reducing for upload.
It's an oil-rig tender, a sort of multipurpose tug boat, in Cook Inlet, Alaska, about 90 miles due south of Anchorage. The mountain visible on the right is Mt. Redoubt, a volcano that erupted as recently as 1989.
Rebel XT with the "kit" lens (hey, I was just driving along- I was lucky to just have a camera!) 1/500sec, f5.6, ISO 100. As I recall, I set the white balance to "daylight" and bumped the exposure compensation up a bit.
Wish I didn't have that lens-flare spot, but if I ever decide to print this, I can lose that in Photoshop.

It's a gorgeous shot, but I would get rid of the flare.

really pretty. the feeling of tranquility is so strong... the flare does really take away from the photo. To me they are the composition killers, you just can't see anything but the flare...

-Better? Not the best erasure, but not bad. Poor location for simple cloning and pasting, since there's a surprisingly wide range of tone and color on that spot.

Lovely shot Doc, and much improved without the flare. Do you know the name of the mountain at the back right of the photo?

Hey, I know it's a nice photo, but there were words attached to it. :D Either that or I'm being whooshed. :)
As I said in the first post, that's Mt. Redoubt, which is actually a volcano. It last erupted in 1989. It's on the same "seam" or fault or whatever you might call it, as Mt. Illiamna which just erupted a few weeks ago, and is still active. (It's about 100 miles to the left in the photo.)

:o My bad. The words were the squiggly characters underneath the first photo that I just skimmed past.

Figured out the flare is from my cheap UV filter I have on the lens as a scratch-protector. Didn't even think about it- I use the "kit" lens just as a carryaround, it's cheap and light (and at the moment, I don't have anything better for a day-to-day zoom.)
If I'd have thought about it, I'd have just pulled the filter... Oh well, life is itself a learning experience. :D

Excellent, much better without the flare. Another picture which shows that the kit lens IS capable of good results.
