Ive never shot a sunrise. I may need some tidbits and hints come saturday morning.

Make sure you charge your batteries today.

Make sure you carry equipment protection with you at all times. Whether it be tojans or trash bags.

Still up in the air for me.. what can I say, indecisive. Anyway, if I do go, I'll be the guy in the white wrangler with no windows or carpet ;) The lack of windows directly contributed to the lack of carpet, seeing as I was in north scottsdale mucking around in the washes during that huge storm. 6 inches of water in your truck requires you pull the carpet and the drain plugs, heheheh...

Where's this mall we're meeting at in the morning?

Rome signed up to make the trip - are you still coming or going Ceasar? Will you be in the early crew (4am Tucson) or will you just wander on the hill at some time after?

I want to but I'm not sure my car tires are kind of  ...... someone should get a Big Van and make it the official AZ POTN mobile :p

I got a PM from Geoff. He wants to trade in his tired old truck and get a 9 passenger van just to haul all of us around. What a guy!
The pony car is hitting the road at 2. I'm further south and east, so I'm leaving at 2:30. I can squeeze you into my bug. There's even space for your gear. Let me know.

You are not too far off the mark. If I could see spendiing this much money on a vehicle, this, in a passenger config, is what I would like. Hippy Magical Mystery Bus!

:D - - - Ummm, why would I want it stand out?

No way, flame red is perfect for Geoff.

Sadly there are no pastels, pink in particular  to match Adam's TuTu -

In all seriousness, what makes this vehicle so very attractive is the mileage combined with the size. Take a couple of rows of seats out and it makes a viable weekender :D

I rented a full size van last year and it sucked down fuel in vast quantities. Other mid sized vans are more car than truck ~

It must be Friday... I can tell because Friday is poop day... and I know you all love to hear about it... It's just not enough to deal with the babies and the dog... today.. our friend GEORGE, the outdoor desert tortoise, snuck into the house through an open door.. He was hiding under the table and while I was going to retrieve him, I stepped in a nice gift that he left for me on the carpet.... which then stuck to my shoe and I didn't realize it unti it was too late... Now I have to shampoo Turtle poop out of my carpet while the babies eat their snack.

Meet George......

Well next time, get your camera out and ask us to step aside shoot some more. :) It sure was nice of you to have us. The black background was great. It was so simple to correct the lens artifacts from the hair light. Next time I shoot black, I will not be so concerned with keeping light stands, ceilings out of the pix. Though with other backgrounds it could be a real bit*h trying to make those corrections...

Thank you Kristy - I was having fun and the girls seemed to be having fun too. These are the shots the girls are going to be getting on their CDs.

My pp does not include any skin smoothing or zit removal, etc...maybe some day, but for now I am enjoying trying to express the person as they are....

Did not get the last two gals processed yet. I am so bad on names - Brittany is from across the street and what is the name of her friend?

Thanks! its general studies/liberal arts/social sciences- what ever you want to call it, i kept changing my mind on a major and ended up with a bunch of different courses of study, Crim J, Sociology, Poly Sci, Econ, Enviro Sci, Chem, Phil, Pshych, B Law so as they say "Jack of all trades, Master of none!" my transcript looks like a course catalouge  as for using the next $70 for gas and chow, my wife has already spent it on another baby class, on my birthday no less, the 28th of this month. At least those 2 Sigmas are coming that day also (or earlier if i get the mail befre she does!), so now i will have something besides the kit lens!

Looks like you all had a fun day out. Sorry I didn't make it :( From the looks of the photos I know I would have had a fun time. Well done all... the shots are great.

This is what I did today...copied from the macro forum post.... photographed on Luke AFB... figures... I drive 50 miles to Mesa... and there were dragonflies 5 miles from the house!!! LOL

What a fun time out! The 5d arrived yesterday and I thought I would see how well it could handle macro. Well... I have to say...I'm going to have to get used to a full frame camera. Coming from the 20D... this is a big change. The 100mm is now a 100mm LOL The extra reach the 20D gives me isn't there. SO... I have to get closer... all in all... it just makes shooting macro more fun. Most of these shots were at f/9.0, ISO 800 or less... many at ISO 800 and the camera does a great job with high ISO's. Shooting natural light is tough.... I think... and with the wind blowing hard... I had to crank up the ISO to keep the shutter speeds up.

I've very pleased with the end results. I shot raw... and I can't believe how sharp the shots are coming straight from raw. I had to apply very little sharpening...if any! I shot with AI Servo...CF 17 set to expansion... I think the combo did a nice job keeping the eyes in focus. Under the conditions I was in... again... I am very pleased with the camera.

Let me know what you think...

Thanks for looking.
Hatch

Thanks for the compliment and the ID. Actually I considered this a cull shot, but it was the best of a sad bunch and I did want to share this weird looker! I am glad that I did and that you showed yours because the colors are so very different. I started chasing this one because it had the redish tint.

Sadly the SigMonster did not come out of the trunk to play, but there will be another day when it will be appropriate. I do appreciate Tammie bringing it along. Tried some nice shots with the 100-400 and if had some sleep, I would have been aware enough to change some settings and then maybe would have gotten more good shots

Frank, I just took the time to examine your photos in more detail. You should be so very pleased with "first photos" on your new tool. I am very pleased that you will now be in a position to have the option shooting natural light if you want, due to the low noise characteristics of the 5D's CCD.

Waving goodbye to 1.6 has got to be rough - instead of getting closer to the object- get the 180mm!

Hey Tofer, missed you and wifey poo. We got off the mt before it started raining hard. All we got was a few drops. It's a good thing we got off the mt since I drive a little VW bug that has not much ground clearance. I'm still waiting for Geoff to get the 9 passenger van for > $50K.

The Resident Hippy told me to go out and play in the middle of the road. So I did. It was a good thing we were there early and there was very little traffic otherwise I may have gotten run over.
At the next stop, he told me to go around and get a picture of a black beetle he could see (he claimed he tweaked his knee so couldn't walk on uneven ground). So I did. The DOF in the photo shows the slope I was on. It was a good thing I didn't fall over the cliff. :p

Looks like everyone had a great day yesterday. I had a busy one running errands and doing some family stuff... Steve came by to pick up his gear and we had a nice visit... , then off to a grown-up girls sleep-overparty...from which I walked home.. (across the street)

Awesome macro as usual Hatch! Glad your liking the 5D... lucky you! :)

I love the sunrise shots guys, even though it isn't spectacular, theres' something beautiful about the freshness of a new morning sky..

Nice bugs, fun journalistic stuff, and I always love it when Tammie plays in the street.. some of my favorites. :) the waterfalls are pretty too.. :)

Zippy - While I am certain that others would be pleased to host a website for full size pix, since you brought it up, why doesn't a generous man like you go ahead and do it?

I already have the azpotn.com name - Why don't you purchase, set up and run a group server application for us, I would be willing to donate, point that is, the name to the server. The cost of a server is peanuts - for less than the equivalent of $1.50 a week prepaid for a year, you can get 100GB of disk space with 1TB of transfer a month. And if you are frugal and pre-purchase three years, it comes to less than $1.13 weekly equivalent. That is about 2 tanks of fuel for my truck~

As it is, I am more than happy to host the events calendar and favorite photos and do so by hand and not have the headache of installing, setting up and monitoring a group server. If you want to take over the task, and get a group server like Joomla or its ilk, let me know. You would then also need to set a up a group photo Album where members can contribute, comment, etc Coppermine comes to mind as possibly being suitable for a group type of thing, though you would need to do some research on both applications.

Let me know when you want to get a hosting account set up. While I have the interest in doing this, I do not have time. If the prepayment is too much, you can always pay on a monthly basis at less than 23 cents a day prepaid a month in advance for the same disk space and 1 TB monthly transfer. And if you are unable to afford the less than 23 cents a day on a prepaid monthly basis ;;;;;;;;;;;;

Ok, these are my efforts from friday. Not sure what I am doing wrong but I can't figure out how to put the pic in the post, I was trying to get some cicada pics. Some that I took with my P&S were seen by a friend of my dad's and she wants to publish one with her cicada article. I wanted to get some better pics of them but they would get quiet as soon as I got within 20 feet of them, but these 2 guys stayed around long enough to get some pics of.

More Mt Lemmon stories...
Goeff told me about a moth in the Men's bathroom and wanted me to go in and get a pic, but I had to draw the line. I got off the rock I was standing on and said, "No!" (It was nice of someone to put the rock there for me so I could see over the fence like everyone else. I know it was put there just for me because Adam said, "Gee, it sure was nice of someone to put a rock there so you could see over the fence like the rest of us!"). Since I refused to go into the Men's bathroom to take the pic, Geoff ripped the camera out of my hands and had to do it himself. So, here is Bathroom Mothra...

Zippyster -

Your idea has great merit. You might be our new hero when you get this up and running! Thank you. I am providing the hosting for the calender and the least you can do is provide the hosting for the photos!

Your generous offer to set up the hosting for the photos will be well appreciated from all. You can pick up a domain name for $1.99 for the first year and the 20 cent ICANN fee, when you purchase the hosting at GoDaddy. The added value to the group by your providing an area to have full size photos is great! The 100GB of space you will provide and 1TB of monthly transfer will be a tremendous asset. Thank you.

Take a look at this software : http://coppermine-gallery.net/ It is FREE and it allows registered users to upload via FTP. This will take very little time to set it up for the group and the nice thing is that it is a simple install into the hosting you will purchase for less than $1.50 a week prepaid.

hey hippie, I hope you can tell that I'm joking. why would I want anyone to go through so much trouble

Agreed it is a lot of trouble to set up and run a group hosting site, but not the simple photo site. I too considered doing a group site so others could keep the activities up to date, but determined that I do not have the time to research and set the programs up, let alone monitor and train others in the use of same. That is why I elected to simply edit, publish and host our little Calender and Diary along with hosting the funny pix. I can fully understand why you do not want to do the group website, but the Coppermine setup for photos will take you next to no time at all to get up and running.

Let me know if you need some direction in putting this into action. I would offer the hosting space on one of my 5 servers, but with you as an admin, you would need a greater degree of access than I am willing to allow, so join in and provide this added service for the group that you feel there is a need to have.

no, it was just the way these people were in the area by the stage...punching and kicking and even a sort of roundhouse or two. they did land a couple weird roundhouses at their friends...I was just worried because I totally looked out of my element there looking a bit preppy with everyone there wearing black...just hoping no one was looking for some trouble. but I'm sure the band would have backed me up seeing as how I was shooting for them and one of the guitarist brother. but I was just worried about my leg. didn't want to go through surgery again ya know :-)

Geoff, since the sigmonster never made it out of the trunk, do you wanna meet up at Desert Botanical on a Saturday morning (they open at 7)? I'm free on any Saturday except for next 2 weekends. Everyone is welcome. Maybe grill some burgers again?

Yes! Sounds like fun Tammie. After the recent moisture it should be interesting. I shall mark the AZPOTN.com calendar for the 25th August. Grilling burgers at Che' Tammie sounds delightful. :D

I'd like to go to the Desert Botanical, how long/how late/how much time do you think we'd be there or enough time to get a good look around?

I have been "advised" that we have a "family/babyshower" at 1 or 130 that day...

Think'd i'd have enough time?

Ahhhh.. sweet sweating.. :) I hear you.. I took like 6 years out because the kiddos were babies.. but then I realized I'm out of shape and getting older is not fun... so now 12 weeks or so back into it.. and man it feels good! A ways to go yet... but it's like therapy...

Keep to it.... :) Get lost in your music and enjoy some time to yourself. Make sure it works with your schedule and you'll definitely stick with it. (having a little female incentive will push you along too... so you're definitely "IN".)

Glad we got off the mountain before it started to rain - did you snooze on the way home, I did a little LOL

So does this vacation ending mean you are now going to have the ability to purchase more gear soon? Like, did you get a new job? ???
