Sorry I never made it / posted, etc. Had a family emergency. Anyway, I saw that some hikers got washed away on Saturday down in Sabino canyon, which is right near Lemmon. Must have rained a bit, eh?

Glad we got off the mountain before it started to rain - did you snooze on the way home, I did a little LOL

So does this vacation ending mean you are now going to have the ability to purchase more gear soon? Like, did you get a new job? ???

Yes I could put some people to deliver door to door around 10,000 flyers and make some presentation cards and go to some stores and leave some on each and promise a cut to the owners for each event and take 2 years to process the pics in my computer lol or I can buy another computer first and practice some photoshop and then do that but if you do it I can help you ;)

FWIW and grins and giggles - added a guest book to the calendar as an experiment. You can post every 48 hours if you like and include a pix you took on one of our adventures. 120kb max size - will show up as a large type thumb and then you can click on the pix and see it grow! I posted and example.

This can stay up as long as I do not have to babysit. If I have to babysit, and I am thinking of visitors, it will probably come down, I am recording IP addresses so I can block them, but do not really want to be bothered. So have some fun and hope our fellow web people will show a little respect for y'all.

Cheers,

I don't think I could do even the occasional wedding. Too much stress for me. On the other hand, maybe we just need some practice. I think we should get Josh to put on a white dress and Geoff can put on a black funeral suit. Everyone else can be the guests and family. We can practice on them.

**Jumping up and down, clapping hands, and doing the happy dance!!**

I just got my first set of prints in... after purchasing my new monitor, and after an entire year or more of off-color prints, blown highlights, dark shadows, etc... it's been a calibration nightmare..

Well.. today's prints, are P-U-R-R-R-F-F-E-E-C-C-T-T!! I mean WOWZA! I can't believe it! They look exactly like my screen! Never thought I would see it happen... and I just can't contain myself... Stupidly, dumb happy about it.

Who would have thought that a matching print would evoke such emotion! Call me crazy, but... I haven't had this much fun in a LOOOOOONNNNNNGGGG time!

Maybe I need to get a life, huh?

But did I say that I am TOTALLY and COMPLETELY stoked, excited, happy, and blah, blah, blah....!!!

AdamB - good luck on the job ssearch!
CeaserVai - sounds like you just found one? Congrats!
Hatch - I don't know how you get Macro shots that good! I was out playing with the Sigma 70-300 Macro I just got, that shallow DoF is hard to get right, and every time i push the sutter button the camera shakes (no, I don't have a remote yet) i got 1 or 2 acceptable shots out of the 20 or 30 I took.

Oh... nice shot here... just a wee bit of camera shake.... but keep on working at it.. you'll get there.

Let me tell you that Hatch is absolutely incredible. He handholds EVERYTHING.. as far as I have seen.... He is so freaking steady it's stupid... infuriating actually. If we could all be so steady.. He has a gift with this macro stuff. I tried shooting some things at the Hassayampa Preserve... and man! It's tough trying to handhold a shot when your at a weird angle.. Many thanks to Tammy for sharing her 100m macro. another toy to put on my wish list now.. :)

Glad you are enjoying the new software. Thanks for participating and sharing. I thought it could be fun for the crew. I'll put a Mt. Lemmon in there for your nice picture and add you to the list. Being a guest book, edits by authors are not allowed :( and I did not want to start another forum, this one is fine. You can, however, click on the little pencil and make comments. I have put a couple in as an example.

I changed the settings - you can 'sign' every 9+ hours.

Hatch - I don't know how you get Macro shots that good! I was out playing with the Sigma 70-300 Macro I just got, that shallow DoF is hard to get right, and every time i push the shutter button the camera shakes (no, I don't have a remote yet) i got 1 or 2 acceptable shots out of the 20 or 30 I took.

Honestly... I just press the button and things happen. LOL Well... here are some tips...

Try to keep your shutter speed 1/200th or faster if your hands are not steady. This really helps eliminate camera shake.
Brace your arms in to your chest... using your elbow as your tripod... slow your breathing...or even use a steady exhale at times…and fire while exhaling. Depends on how close you are to the subject and the magnification you are shooting at. The more magnification… the more the camera shake will show in your photos…or it can I should say.
Place your support hand under the lens as far out on the lens as you can. This helps stabilize the camera. Don't be afraid to shoot ISO 400 or even 800 with the 20D. A little noise reduction software will work wonders.

Next time out... try this...
AV mode... center point focus
ISO ? depends on how much light you have... start at 200 and work your way up until you get the shutter speed around 1/200th or more.
F/9 or F/11 if you shooting with a macro lens... anything past F/13 and you start to face soft images and diffraction. When working with macro… your DOF is millimeters.
Soot raw....
AI Servo.... I listen for the camera to "chatter" when it is working hard to keep the focus... this is when I shoot most of the time.

Move slowly towards your subjects... I'm not a little person and I can sneak up on the bugs... if I can do it...anyone can :)
More than anything… practice… ordinary objects around the house look pretty cool when magnified. Plus… they do not fly away seconds before your press the shutter button. LOL

I would suggest you try to shoot natural light and then move on to macro with flash… that is another world altogether.

Hope some of this helps… if you have any questions… feel free to ask. I will help where I can.

Let me tell you that Hatch is absolutely incredible. He handholds EVERYTHING.. as far as I have seen.... He is so freaking steady it's stupid... infuriating actually. If we could all be so steady.. He has a gift with this macro stuff. Far too kind Kristy... I just point and shoot. What you all don't see is I bribe the insects prior to the taking their photos. :)

I don't know how Frank does it! But I don't want him to stop! Many thanks Geoff. Again... you all only see the good shots... not the bad ones. I have a low keeper rate with macro... either the composition is wacky due to the insect moving... exposure is off....focus is off... and so on. I shot 173 frames last night... I kept 30 which I thought were really nice shots... I have many repeats because I shoot and move....shoot and move... you never know when the insect is going to flee. Out of those 30... I narrowed the shots down to 23 which I will print. So... you see... I take many shots and work my way towards the shots you see posted. I find shooting macro to be a challenge... and I've always had a low percentage of keepers... just how it goes for me... I would think other macro shooters take the same approach as I do... shoot and move.

Enough babble. LOL

Good deal Geoff... looks like you are having fun with the site.
I haven't been there this afternoon... are we all still on for the Gardens?

I don't know if you all have seen the shots from last night?

OK, so I have to admit that i cheated on the sneaking up part, I found that beetle in the parking lot of the office I work for. It was dead, but I had never seen that metallic green color on a bug before so I brought it home and posed it on a branch I cut off a tree (notice the tips of the legs aren't holding onto the branch. I set that up in the back yard and started shooting. All i have is the onboard flash, so I wrappd some cereal boxes in tin foil and tried to brighten the subject using them as reflectors. My wife got home and saw what I was doing and thought I had finally gone nutz! She called my mom and they both had a laugh at me.

AI Servo? didn't think of that one, I will have to go try it. I think my beetle is still out back... Thanks for the tips!

OK, so I have to admit that i cheated on the sneaking up part, I found that beetle in the parking lot of the office I work for. It was dead I have to revoke your Macro Masters License :) No dead insects!!! Rule #1 has been violated. ROFL

Seriously... I understand... everything looks cool when magnified. When you are on your belly at a zoo in the Middle East... taking shots of ants and not the animals at the zoo... then people look at you like you are crazy. LOL

Give the settings I mentioned a try... it is a good starting point. Before long you will see the world in a different way. I look at all things now and wonder what they would look like if I shot them with a macro lens. :)

Arizona85224...It just take practice, it ain't rocket science. You are 100% correct... it is closer to neurosurgery. :)

anyone read yesterdays sports section? they're changing some rules with the nfl like making all journalists wear a vest while on the sidelines. photographers have to wear a red vest that has a Canon emblem on the front...kinda like an advertisement but kinda small. yet there's talk that it disrupts the journalists view of being nonpartial to advertising...what do you think?

azphotos

Frank - Thanks for revealing your MoJo! Have not tried the servo approach - do you just push the focus button once and then follow your thingy and the servo will stay active until you shoot or do you have to keep the focus button depressed the entire time? Hmmmm - i don't use auto focus for the closer shots. Is this method utilized when doing much less than 1:1, in other words, large 100% crops?

Oh and BTW I think your % is quite good! Superb shots once again today!

See you found the answer for the 25th for the Gardens. That is why I put the site up - to try and keep track and also have some fun for everyone too. Tammie is busy the next two weekends, Adam and I are going to a friends house Saturday to hang out at his pool and shoot hummers and such - every now and then a sharp shin makes a visit! Also Gilas, Cactus wrens, etc, etc...

You are correct that I am having some fun with the site and I hope that it is useful and fun for this nice collection of photographers we have here. I hope the guestbook idea will be an enhancement for all concerned.

I am also playing around with a graphic version (http://geoffreybabcock.com/simplemachinesforum/index.php?action=calendar) - along with some other ideas to enhance the AZ POTN experience. And FanBoy - LOL - two points on the long hair and whom gets the tux - just remember that the cadaver tuxes are split up the back :snicker:

Ryan, Yes I saw the article and it seems like a lot of BS to me. I have no objection to them wearing a uniform, but just remember when Jim McMahon of the Chicago Bears got fined mucho dollars for wearing a sweatband with a Nike logo on it. Now a few years later the NFL is promoting this poop! It was big time $ he got fined. Wonder how much Canon had to pay off the NFL?

Rutha - ROTFLMAO when I read your confession - you shall now repent for your sins and eat the dead bug! :D

Do you guys like having an actual calendar link? Should I continue to develop this idea for y'all? Let me know please.

Geoff, I love the calendar thing you have created. I don't know about the guest book thing though. I'll talk more about this with you tomorrow.

I just Ran across this event in Pop Photo, there is a hummingbird migration and there is a banding station down south the public can visit and get a close up view of the birds. It says in the magazine that after banding that the workers will give the hummer some nectar then let a visitor hold it. (Pop Photo, August 2007 p110). and here is Arizona Bird Observatory's Site (http://www.sabo.org/photoalb/banding.htm)

OH, and I should be able to make he Botanical Garden trip!

Super - glad you can make it. Will put you on for the Botanical Garden! :D

Yes, the San Pedro House is special, :D that is why it is listed on the activities page as a possible activity.

A new addition for a possible in the same area is Ramsey Canyon, though it too is a long drive - about 198 miles from central Phoenix.

You will be a welcome addition Disney. Please drive down from Flag to join us with your Coed :D

For grins and giggles - I put up a temporary community site if anyone is interested in playing. All you have to do is create an account (http://geoffreybabcock.com/drupal/) and do the olde email verification. I am interested in discovering if there could be some value to it. This is on my testing server, so please don't invest any real time in this. Play around have fun, but it is not perm. It it is decided that y'all want this and are willing to run it, for some strange reason, there would be a clean install on a different server and any content you put in would probably be lost.

Also please don't forget to try out the "guest book (http://azphoto.info/advancedguestbook/)" and also the graphic calendar (http://geoffreybabcock.com/simplemachinesforum/index.php?action=calendar)
The guest book is already on the main server. If it proves to be useful and fun, no content will be lost keeping it

The only free decent calendar I have discovered so far is the one posted and it is part of a larger package. I have been looking for a stand alone version, but have not found anything as suitable. If anyone knows of a good calendar for Linux - written in probably php would be best, please let me know. No worries for y'all that this is on the test server as this is simply an interface for you.

As always any comments and suggestions to make AZ Potn online calendar presence better are welcomed. :D

Hey All...sorry for threadjacking but:

Anyone taken a dSLR to Chase Field (the aritist formerly known as BOB?)

Going to Saturday game Vs Washington and our seats (top of lower bowl...abeam first base) should be conducive to a 70-200 f/2.8 IS + 1.4. Probably on a 5D for the indoor lighting.

Just wondering if anyone in this group had ever taken a similar rig down to the ballpark and been denied or hassled about it? The website says no shooting for professional use (per the MLB rights deal) and no support pods.

Have fun at the Botanical Garden. Looking forward to some samples on Sunday! :D

I was stopped when I tried to bring in a Rebel and a 75-300 4 years ago and had to leave it in the car. Their rules state that the lens can be no longer than the thickness of the camera body. That's the official word on it. That said, you may get a lazy gate person and sneak one by. Good luck.

This destination and link are listed on www.azpotn.com (http://www.azpotn.com).

great shots Kristy!
Hatch, the second set is stunning as usual!

As for the my macro practice, Hatch, you said to use AV mode. I had trouble with that because when I got my XTi I put it on M and forced myself to learn it, without being able to control shutter speed I was going crazy, alot of the shots I tried were shaded so when I got it to f/11 it wanted to use 1-2 secs. and I can't hold that. My lens has a min. focus distance of .95 (I am assuming that is meters, because it is about 3 feet) at 300mm. Also, does anyone else use the in camera processing? I bummped up the saturation and sharpness, and haven't done very much of anything in photoshop or picassa other than resize. And yes, it was WAY TOO HOT out there when we went. most of the big animals were hiding out so we didn't get to see them, i guess if you go too late into the winter the reptiles are hiding because it is too cold, so yuo have to find the right time. I want to go back for the Raptor Free Flight sessions (that is when it gels cooler also).

The first question I have to ask... what ISO setting you were using. 100? 200? Don't be afraid to shoot up to ISO 800. This will help with your shutter speed. I shoot AV most of the time when shooting natural light. When I shoot flash... I use manual. With AV you have to keep an eye on the shutter speed... I adjust the ISO to gain the speed and you can under expose up to about 1 stop to gain a little extra speed. I like to shoot about 1/160th a sec... if I do not have something to brace on. A little slower if I can brace the shot. 1/200th and faster is where you want to shoot for. Remember... you can shoot F/9.0 to F/11.... Even F/7.1 if the subject is at a right angle to the camera. My recent butterfly shot was at a 90 to the camera. I shot F/7.1 this helped me gain more shutter speed... I wasn't worried about the DOF... I knew the butterfly was thin and at a 90 to me... so... it would be in focus.

It is all about balance I suppose... I even shot TV mode allowing the camera to choose my F/stop .... I wanted to shoot fast moving little insects... I set the desired speed to 1/250th and let the camera go from there. You have to keep an eye on the f/stop... I wouldn't let it get under F/7.1

I hope this all makes sense...

I shoot raw... no in camera processing... I like being in control.

Ryan... as we talked about at Kristy's house... line of sight with the Ste2 is the limiting factor IMO. I'm sure people have had great success with the system. Wireless is the way to go... you can buy an adaptor kit for the EX flash heads...to allow a pocket wizard to connect to them. I use the off camera shoe cord as well... so... it depends on what you want to accomplish. If I had to do it all over again... I would buy 2 Nikon SB 800's and attach my pocket wizards to them. Why Canon can't include a jack on the flash heads is beyond me. Just my thoughts... I'm sure the Ste2 would be fine if you are not going to place it out of range and out of sight.

Ryan,
Every system has it pluses and minuses ...
The STE-2 is relatively cheap and you only need one. Line of sight can be an issue at times, but you aren't tethered via cords.

2- speedlights one as a master the other as a slave will work as well. I'd use a bracket with off camera shoe cord on the master for when you want to shoot portrait mode and keep the flash above the lens. A long off camera shoe cord will give you flexibility to move the master around but then you are tethered and need to be careful to not move too far from the master.

Pocket wizards are really nice and pricey ($200 + per pocketwizard and you'll need at least 2). Also you'd need to get an adapter kit for the speedlight. Or I saw a hack to add the neccessary connection to a speedlight somewhere on the forum. The plus for pocketwizards is that once you get studio strobes (monolights) you'll be able to use the pocketwizards with them.

It really comes down to how much do you want to invest, I've used the STe2 but I was shooting headshots and award presentations (all indoors) so the line of sight was not an issue.

Hope this helps.

Never had that fear before.. just stand near something taller and more metal than you. ;) I've set up under power towers before, figured they'd catch anything coming near before little me. Anyway, I just wander out to the desert and go for it, the chances are way too slim to worry about it (for me).

the something taller doesn't always work. there was a kid here last year at nau that got struck by lightning. prolly the only reason he got struck was because he was carrying an umbrella. he was near several large trees and right by a building with lightning rods on top. but still got struck

Talk to Steve... he has this really cool trick that does white balance AND helps to set exposure in a controlled situation.... Extremely simple, amazing and near perfect result... He really is a good teacher for that kind of thing....

Calling Steve... where are you Jumper Guy?

Never had that fear before.. just stand near something taller and more metal than you. ;) I've set up under power towers before, figured they'd catch anything coming near before little me. Anyway, I just wander out to the desert and go for it, the chances are way too slim to worry about it (for me).

Better get to it, Monsoon Season only lasts so long!

Hmmm?? Maybe I better come along and hang out with you... fearless freddy.. You can teach me a thing or two about lightning strikes... :)

the something taller doesn't always work. there was a kid here last year at nau that got struck by lightning. prolly the only reason he got struck was because he was carrying an umbrella. he was near several large trees and right by a building with lightning rods on top. but still got struck

On second thought... ??

grey card, custom wb, do you use cs2 or shoot raw or anything. you don't need a book.

I have Photoshop 6.0, and i do shoot in RAW

Do a potn search for white balance and you'll find all the info in the world about it.

I'm not sure about PS 6 but you should be able to make changes to your wb in whatever raw editor you're using.

I feel so inferior in height next to the az cardinals :-P saw them while I was with one of the sports writers that I work with. they were all in the training room getting ready. then as soon as I got a couple shots that I think were good went and saw the players come out from the dome onto the practice field. got a couple pics...only really recognized two of the players. link to my shots

rutha73 (Jake),
I use the one shot 14" pocketdigital calibration target by Photovision (http://photovisionvideo.com/target.html ) I think I got it at Tempe Camera. The site contains a few video's about white balance and the histogram. The target is basically a round target with Black, Gray, and white sections. Fill the view finder with the target and shoot, check the histogram and you'll see three spikes adjust your exposure and reshoot. Keep doing this until you get the spikes where you like them in the histogram. Then using the shot with the exposure you like, set the custom whitebalance using that image. I do use a lightmeter (somewhat inexpensive) and that will usually get me close to exposure I'll use but the target seems to produce consistant results. After the shoot, I normally reset the white balance to AWB before turning off the camera (I accidentally did a second shoot with a Custom WB from a shoot a couple of days prior).
Hope this helps.

Like what kristy said, don't change a thing. my camera is usually set in auto wb and I just leave it there. It's nicer to capture all the lighting that goes on from the stage. if you do a nice and reputable place like where you shot you get some good lighting on the musicians. but like the place i shot at there wasn't much on the faces of the people. The stage lights always give a nice look to photos.
oh and great shot there! wish I could go to the concerts but I'll be in flag and also I can't afford them since i will be living off of ramen once again, ok not really cause of too much sodium but you get my point. :-)

Thanks for asking Kristy! I start my new job Monday morning. :D I'll be a bill collector here soon. Be afraid, be very afraid. It's a completely different line of work then I'm used to, but it's inside, in air conditioning, I'm never on call. finally you guys liked one of my pics lol; but Kristy thats is far away from the way the pic came out like, I based the WB on the white part of the guitar then have to raise one stop on the light ( even it was like a 1/3 overexposed on the camera meter ??? ) desaturated the colors a lot and reduced color tone a lot too, a little more of contrast and a little of sharpening ( with color temperature WB I couldn't get anything close to reality from 2500 to 10,000 WEIRD) and it was iso 1250 not 1600; anyways it was an amazing night and get to meet one of the guys that I used to play at least 6 of his songs it was cool :D

Kristy, mine birthday is Sept. 18th. Which is one day before yours, which you said is one day before the Def Leppard concert.
