Sure hope you make it up...can you come up early? I was thinking it could be fun to get together a bit early, if possible, grab something to eat and get aquainted. I have only met Larry and Brendan so far.
I will be working Just outside of Holbrook at a Power Plant, probably leave at noon which should put me in Phoenix by 4pm. There should be someplace at the Hotel to meet up, Bar, Restaurant or somewhere. Then after it's over 4 hours back home.............

Decided to quit bitching about not making any money with photography and do something about it. Right before the end of 2007, I opened a Zenfolio account (they had a lifetime discount deal going) so I'm going to start migrating some of my better stuff off PBase and see if anyone thinks it's worth paying for!

So far, I have four whole shots posted! I can already feel the masses headed for my site with their wallets open!!

The only one I have left is my old trusty Rebel 35mm from about 12 years ago. Have no idea why I keep it? other than I ran a ton of film through it and it's probably not worth much today. I still have all my Conkin filters etc. Haven't tried to use them with my XTi..maybe that would be fun to play with.

My film cameras outnumber my digital cameras about 10:1, I don't expect any of them to make a comeback, but there's something about shooting old film cameras that I enjoy.

Well, I "think", for me anyway, it may have something to do with how they were used vs. using a digital. I don't know about you guys but I spent quite a bit of time setting up a shot when using film. It seems I found myself checking everything 2 to 3 times before firing the shutter off. I'd look at the subject, lighting, shadows, composition not to mention the actual settings several times. Why did we do that? Obviously because it cost a lot to make mistakes or render unusable photos. Today, no big deal, fire away, turn a wheel or press a button and fire away again..don't like it...delete..fire away again. No cost!! That's a great thing or a new found freedom for me and I find it quite fun as well BUT I have also noticed that when I get into that frame of mind (no pun intended) that I sometimes don't really think about what I'm doing as much as I used to. So, for right now, I think digital is great as long as I don't loose sight of my creative process in actually setting the shots up. Not sure if you get what I'm trying to say here but I know what I meant..

I still have my film bodies as well. The T90 was (is) such a good camera that I just can't part with either of mine. I don't own any FD "L" glass but I do have a 300mm f/4 and a couple of wides (20mm, 24mm) that are SSC. The rest of my lenses are mid-grade Tamron Adapt-All with no f/stop faster than around f/3.5 Oh wait, I do have an FD 50mm f/1.4!!

Cool! :) You better start adding photos Mister... :)
I looked into ZenFolio when I was trying to decide where to host my images.. but they were brand new at the time and still working out their glitches, so I went with SmugMug... Plus I liked the idea of customizing the pages...
I'm not very "web code" savy, so I didn't create anything fancy, but for people that know what they are doing, Smug Mug allows lots of creativity.
Anyway, I'm sure you'll love ZenFolio.. same thing I'm sure, and it's such an easy way to show your work. :)
Enjoy!

Nice looking site Guerry. You did a good job. I thought about building a site but never seem to get around to it so just decided to go with a photo share site (let them do the work..LOL:o) so after looking around at a few I'm going to go with Zenfolio. Been spending way too much time going through a bunch of pics and trying to decide which go up & which don't and what would folks like and what wouldn't they like and what's wrong with this one and that one etc etc. So now I have just decided the hell with it,,gonna throw most everything up there as I don't care if they are great or not..LOL Just got to get some up. I'll concern myself with quality stuff from this point on..LOL

Hey Cool!
I'm actually at the other extreme these days. My medical is current (freshly renewed a couple of weeks ago) but I'm unable to find sufficient time to fly enough to consider myself (by my standards) current. I'd never be happy just being one of those guys who jumps in and goes three times around the patch each month.
I passed my checkride back in Ocotober of '04 and managed to make it to such diverse places as Las Cruces, Palm Springs, Blythe, Yuma, Douglas, Tucson (a bunch) and Page plus plenty o' burger runs to Prescott and Sedona. But going much beyond the usual haunts (especially through the Banning Pass into SoCal) is going to require an instrument rating which just isn't in the cards right now.
Just picking my battles as I find them...

At the end of the day, it's just a job. And of course leading up to a Super Bowl, the days can be anywhere from 15 to 20 hours long...
On top of everything else, throw in the tightest possible "pucker factor" from all quarters and "Envy" is not the word you're looking for. ;)

I definitely wouldn't doubt that the fun of it all can be lost pretty easily under those circumstances. Kinda makes me glad all the shooting I do is just for personal enjoyment vs. an actual job (even if I wish I could sell enough shots to help cover costs of this expensive habit, er, hobby!)

Mostly. A lot of the time I'll just throw my 40D/30 1.4 combo in whatever bag I'm dragging around. Also I tend to carry it all around atm because I'm waiting on the new insurance...

Most of the time I have my camera with me. I used to work for my school paper here so finding events to photograph as it happens is nice to do with my camera with me. But it depends on my backpack and how heavy it is for the day :-) the 1D is a bit heavy to carry, even with the 17-40 but I will also have my flash and flashcord with me.

Hi Larry...
According to Airshowbuzz.com:
Yuma: Feb 23
Douglas: Mar 15
Fort Smith: May 17-18
Prescott: Oct 4
Kingman: Oct 11
Other events that I know of but don't know dates:
AZ Antique Aircraft Assoc Flyin @ Casa Grande (Traditionally Spring)
EAA Copperstate Fly In @ Casa Grande (Traditionally Fall)
Sedona Airport Open House + Car Show (IIRC Late Summer/Early Fall)
Tucson @ Davis-Monthan (An off year in '08..next show in '09)
Goodyear (Website still has info from '06..dunno if "sprawl" has killed it or not)
Another interesting one I ran into last spring was "Heritage Flight" practice down at Davis Monthan. Several P51s, F16s, F15s, F22s and DMs own A10s were practicing airshow formation flying. I don't remember exactly when it was (April maybe) but there were several people parked off the southeast end of the base (near the private salvage yards) just happily snapping away.

Do you mean how does one become a Heritage Flight Pilot or how does one get to attend the workups at Davis-Monthan?
As to the former (and I'm flat guessing here) but I would think it's a deal between the DoD and the Warbird section of the EAA. There's probably some ICAS (International Council of Air Shows) wheeling and dealing going on as well. There are some "under age 50" warbird owner/operators out there so I'd be safe in assuming that many/most of them were blue suiters (USAF) types at some point. Very close formation flight is generally not a skill your average weekend pilot would posses.
As to the second, I guess it helps to know people in Public Affairs or to be close to one of the pilots involved.

Hi Jay,
Thought I'd look at Airshow Heritage info, and found this. Great video of vintage aircraft. Well worth the time to watch it. Thought you'd like it. I was hopeful the group might come to Tucson, but I see the next heritage show is 2009. However, there is a show of the 355th Fighter Association 65th Annual Reunion April 24 to 27.

YOu guys are funny... :) I just need to start hanging around at Babies'R Us and strike up a conversation with the Mommies to Be. I've done that once or twice in my life.... :) And both times ended up doing both maternity and newborn sessions... LOL!
It's been over 6 months since my last newborn session.... of course I've been busy too...
I don't think I would think of trying to hang around a hospital anyway... seems a bit shady if you ask me... But I'd LOVE to journal a birth one of these days.. if the timing is ever right....
Anyway, I was half kidding on my original post... All the talk about airplanes and monster trucks.... BOY STUFF... there is way too much testerosterone going around in this thread! LOL.... TAMMIE..... WHERE ARE YOU?? lol...

If anyone is interested, there are white pelicans at Ocotillo and Price. There are also a bunch of canada geese, cormorants, widgeons, mallards, coots, pied billed grebes, Great blue herons, Great egrets, and a snowy egret.
Here are a couple. I took the 1st and Russ took the 2nd. Looks like they suffered a little from resizing. Oh well, y'all get the idea. ;)
Hey Tammie thanks for the tip on the pelicans. Lots of really cool birds over there. I really enjoyed the kingfisher even though it only sat long enough for one shot. I'm sure I will make a few more trips back out that way.

Just a FWIW moment from today.
One of the video editors I work with was at the stadium today with his spiffy new Nikon 300. I only had my mitts on it for a couple of minutes and
1) It's tiny. I mean really tiny. Compared to my 5D (w/ grip) it looks more like a G9 P&S than an SLR.
- But -
2) For it's size, it's actually kind of heavy. Or maybe the better word is "dense." It has a certain mass to it that is suprising for it's size. Picture reaching for the old T70 but having it feel like you're picking up a 1DMkIII.
Thus endith today's alternative manufactuer report...

Very well done video.
As for the Tucson airshow, I guess I didn't realize that they only hold "Aerospace and Arizona Days" at Davis Monthan every other year. I'm fairly certain, however, that the Heritage Flight Conference and practice flights are held every spring prior to the start of the airshow season.
I remember last year it was windy as hell the day I parked outside the base fence so I didn't hang out as long as I usually would. The funniest part of that day is that right after my wife and I checked into our hotel downtown, the best four ship of the day (IIRC, P51, A10, F16 and F22) came buzzing past our hotel at right about the same level as our floor, but I'd left my 100-400 down in the car because I didn't want to lug it upstairs. Interesting thoughts on the 300. Let's be honest, Nikon makes some good stuff too. But the more I think about the size/weight impression you gave, the more I liked my 30D with it's Body Armor to give it even more size...just like a thicker steering wheel, it just feels right :).

This was in the AZ Republic last week.... I always pull out things like this and put them in a file of "places to see"... Could be interesting to take pictures of the area... Not so far away as BTA... plenty of wilderness around..... who knows what we'd find.
Looks like it's just past Lake pleasant, maybe north-east of the upper west end of the lake? It's hard to tell on the map, but I know where Castle Hot Springs Road is... If nothing else, we shoot the lake....
Interesting to anyone?
Castle Hot Springs: Native Americans used the natural spas here for centuries. Then came a sanitarium in the 1880s. Finally, the Castle Hot Springs Resort opened in 1896, serving 30 guests who made the arduous, five-hour stagecoach ride from Morristown. During its heyday, Castle Hot Springs was considered one of the premier resorts in the United States. Over the years it attracted members of such prominent families as the Vanderbilts, Astors, Roosevelts and Wrigleys. During World War II, the resort was commissioned as a military hospital, where wounded vets could regain their strength. Supposedly, a young naval officer named John F. Kennedy spent time there. A fire destroyed the main building in 1976. Fire trucks couldn't reach the area, which, at the time, was 40 miles from the nearest fire station. Every so often, there's talk of refurbishing and re-opening the resort. Drive by and you'll see why. It's lovely.

CHS is a beautiful area. I have spent a bit of time exploring the area of CHS road closer to Wickenburg. The road is actually a big horseshoe which starts near LP and ends back on Hwy 74 near I-60 south of Wickenburg.
Although most of my time spent was looking for snakes I do recall seeing some areas that would make for beautiful landscape photos. I would think with all the rain the area should be nice a green and would contrast well with the pink soil and rocks.

Thanks Scott. I was using the 100-400mm lens. Most of the birds would not let me get even a little close. Not sure why the exif data is not showing up. They were shot as RAW files and converted to jpeg for the net.
I was in a hurry so I didn't have time to play around with my settings. It seems I fall into the same P mode trap when I am short on time. Are you going to hit BTA this sunday?
Hehe, we'll get you trying other modes yet :).
Yes, I am tentatively planning on BTA on Sunday. I'll know by mid-day on Saturday for sure. That exhibit is also a motivator, anyone else?
Thanks to Kristy and Guerry for posting the information!

Nice shots Randy and Jay. That 17-40 shot makes we want the lens. :) Looks like you are having fun with it.
A couple of shots from this morning... I picked up a few feathers yesterday and shot some macro. This is with the Sigma 180mm macro ... no tubes or TC on the camera. That is the next challenge... I have a few more feathers to photograph... different patterns/colors.
Have a fun weekend all.

WOW! Hatch, that's amazing. I know it's a feather but you're in so close it looks like the feather veins are twisted rope or something along those lines. Really something..

10 years in AZ, passing Watch For Elk signs all over the northern reaches and I've never seen one anywhere but at (as we like to call it) the Dead Animal Museum on Speedway in Tucson.
That must have been a great sight.
