Check back with me in mid April and I should have one.
WOOT! Congrats!
This was in the AZ Republic last week.... I always pull out things like this and put them in a file of "places to see"... Could be interesting to take pictures of the area... Not so far away as BTA... plenty of wilderness around..... who knows what we'd find.
Looks like it's just past Lake pleasant, maybe north-east of the upper west end of the lake? It's hard to tell on the map, but I know where Castle Hot Springs Road is... If nothing else, we shoot the lake....
Interesting to anyone?
I saw that article too Kristy and it sounded like a nice day trip. Let me know.
A couple of shots from this morning... I picked up a few feathers yesterday and shot some macro. This is with the Sigma 180mm macro ... no tubes or TC on the camera. That is the next challenge... I have a few more feathers to photograph... different patterns/colors.
Nice Hatch. Glad to see you are having some fun. Thanks for sharing.

no, cold, yes some snow but only looks like it, it's more like ice now, and about 1.5-2 hrs depending on traffic. but mostly about 1.5 hrs, I haven't gone since...spring of 2004.

I hate when comedy meets irony...
I was actually stealing a line from the old Mary Tyler Moore show where news anchor Ted Baxter (played by Ted Knight) always used to start his life story with his earliest days at a "100 watt radio station in Iowa..."
Believe it or not, I was a broadcasting major in college (Central Michigan University.) I've held lots of different types of postitions in a variety of facilities from editing houses to studios to duplication plants (aka dub shops) but since about 1987, I've been a free lancer with the bulk of my work being in large format live sports. Large format in this case refers to the fact it's a production that needs multiple production units and many, many cameras and replay machines. I'd guesstimate that 90% of my work has been as a slo-mo replay operator with some editing work as well. I can run a camera and I do have some other skills but the replay world is my bag.
I won't give you the whole resume but I've done NFL, NBA, MLB, NCAA, NHL, PGA, LPGA at both the local and national level and currently I make most of my scratch off NASCAR for FOX and TNT. In fact, I'm off to Daytona next week.
Along the way I've been fortunate to garner seven Emmy awards (four national and three from the Rocky Mountain region.) And yes, the national awards do come in the form of the big, gold statue of a winged lady holding a globe. Unfortunately, we have to buy our own statues but it's worth it...!
That's me in a nutshell... :)

Owing to the fact that we now use hard-drive based devices, we can cue up the action while it's happening (and still be in record the whole time.) For lack of a better term, I'm a professional TiVO operator...

Ok, that's hillarious about the Ted Baxter line as I thought 'gee, that did sound familiar'.*slaps forehead* :)
I agree with Ryan, quite a resume, and that photo was a terrific moment!
Have you ever done the official 'Tivo' work at a Formula 1 event? That's the only sport I am into but your experience is incredible. You have made quite a name for yourself with Emmy's to boot, congrats!!!

I leave town for a couple of days and more new people show up. Welcome everyone!!
I just got back from the PMA show in Vegas and my head is still spinning. The Canon exibit was amazing. Several pros were there doing studio lighting demos as well as displaying the use of the wireless technology. The only new cameras there were the XTsi and the 1Ds MkIII. I got to play with the 1Ds using several different lenses. I would love to have one!
There were hundreds of booths with everything you can imagine. The most impressive to me was the Eizo monitors. The color and sharpness was incredible, so I'm ordering one. I'll post more later or answer questions if anybody has any.

I am located in the mesa/queen creek area.
I have mostly been taking photos of my dogs, and the dogs of friends, and some landscape stuff. But i am interested in all aspects of photography. I wanted to try and drive around tomorrow and find some nice urban areas not sure if anyone can recommend anything.
I need to get a wider lens. I am currently stuck in what seems like a common problem 17-55 IS or 24-70 2.8L..lol
Thanks again.

Welcome Home Terry! Glad you enjoyed the PMA... Fun times huh?! Sounds like you were bombarded with information. Fun to play with new toys and see the latest and greatest stuff. Did you have a chance to meet any new photographer friends?

Welcome to the group. I have the 24-70...Kristy owns a copy... Ceasar owns the 17-55 I think?
The 24-70 I have is wicked sharp... the focal range on the FF 5D is just great. The lens is well worth the money IMO. I haven't shot with the 17-55. I've read good things about is as well.

For those who watched, I hope you enjoyed our efforts at Glendale on Sunday... Apparently, SBXLII goes in the books as the second hightest watched TV program of all time (behind only the finale of M*A*S*H) so that's cool.
Unfortunately, my professional duties prohibited me from being anywhere near the action or the aftermath. Some guys went inside to get a pic of the confetti carnage but I didn't get a chance to do the same. 19-hour day on Sunday (63 hrs total for the week) which is a nice way to start the year before heading to Daytona tomorrow. Now to make some serious cash! :)
I'll attempt to lurk and drop an occasional note from Florida with maybe a pic or two along the way. "Scenes From The Road 2008" will commence on PBase sometime after I get back since there's not enough bandwith (or editing time) to do much from the road.

Great shot!! Saw editing was Ok so I did a fast one just to see the difference of houses vs. no houses (could go either way as far as I'm concerned)..took speed limit sign out as well as white post in lower left hand side. As you can see I took houses to the left of the road out & left those on the right so you can decide which you like best..

Thank You Larry. Probably the best part of the entire night was seeing how happy our director and producer were when it was over. The director was happy because we had a good, clean show. The producer, well, he's a Giant's fan so he got some extra icing on the cake!

Tom- thanks, i think i like the no houses one better, it makes it look more desolate and rugged, just the one lonely road leading in and out. if you don't mind me asking, what did you use to get rid of them?
Jay- the only problem i had with the game is that COX lost coverage for the first quarter and a half where I was, so nothing you all could have fixed!!! Great game!!
Thanks to everyone for leaving feedback in the Travel & Landscape thread also. I will probly go back and shoot Superstition again by this weekend, might try to get farther away from the road and take that out of the photo also.

I must admit..I am a fan of no houses....I like the look before the settles came here (HA)
Larry, I agree. No houses makes it look more rugged & unsettled to me
[quote=Rutha73;4853370]Tom- thanks, i think i like the no houses one better, it makes it look more desolate and rugged, just the one lonely road leading in and out. if you don't mind me asking, what did you use to get rid of them?
Rutha, I'm still using Elements 2...I know..I know.. Elements 6 just came out:o..Maybe someday I'll update...I just don't rush into things..LOL
Specifically, I used the Clone Stamp Tool to take the houses out. I take it you are out here in the far east valley as I am so if you need help with that sometimes just let me know. Pretty easy once you see it.
ps..Rutha..these chandlerites & westvallens are starting to get out of hand..maybe we need a far east valley recruiting campaign!!

Just go there and click on 'Add yourself' on the left side. Color coded pins and all just for the Phoenix crew here at POTN =) Be sure to go with zip codes for the location so we don't just get a ton of dots on the center of Phoenix, hehe.

Hey Mike and AZ Pix...... :)
Welcome to our Corner... It's alwalys fun to get new friends, and we have gotten so many new friends in the last several weeks... I think there must be at least 10 new people now.. I can't keep up anymore.
Anyway, I think AZ Pix takes pictures of people.. (YAY! Another people person!).... So what do you like to shoot Mike?
Do either of you have a gallery somewhere that we can peek at? It's always fun to see what other people are up to.

Does anyone think that This Photo (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=447193) needs to have the buildings cloned out that are near the bottom of the mountain? I put it in Travel and Landscapes and no one wants to answer that question after i put it up
Hey Jake...
I did a quick edit on these for you here... http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=4853743&postcount=19
Your original had a lot of green in it.. I tried to pull some of it out... but not sure if I did a good job on the color or not...
I thought it needed less color, more shadow and maybe a different crop. The clouds are amazing... You can really play with clouds and make them look dramatic with a little shadow/highlight play... also if you burn the edges of the shadows, they become more dimensional...
A little contrast added through USM, and couple other things... Anyway, hope you like... :)

Mike (azhikr) there is a lot of web based galleries online. A few of us, as well as myself, use flickr.com for our photos. Some also use pbase. and those are the only ones that I know about. So let me tell you about flickr. It's free, up to a certain point. you are limited in your uploads per month and you can have 200 photos visible for people to see. for an additional $25 you can go "pro" and have unlimited uploads and visible photos. I like it. I actually have some podcasts that I listen to that also refer to flickr. but that's just my take on it. just do a little research and ask us any questions if you have any :-) happy shooting

Hi Mike & Welcome..there are bunches of photo sharing sites to pick from. Some are totally free but you put up with ads etc. Some you pay for but not much about $20-$25/year with a few more than that. Seems like the most popular are zenfolio, flickr and pbase. All these are used by members here and they all seem to like where they are. I just put mine up on zenfolio. I just liked the layout etc. When you decide on one, get in touch with a member here already on it and they will no doubt have a discount code for you that takes $5.00 off your first year and they will get the same credit for their next year for the referral.

I like those edits, your B&W conversions are great, but one of the reasons I like the photo was the bright blue sky and the white clouds:D. I am still not comfortable with the burn tool, I tried it once and i couldn't make it look right, but I really like the color version you did!

Ryan..you are correct, the 16th is the annual chili cookoff. Amazingly enough, chili folks come from all over the US for this?? Last year the whole main street was lined with chili experts cookin away. I think you 'bought' a cup for a $5.00 donation and then you could hit all the vendors and test their chili. No gunfights that sat. as the streets are full of vendors etc. But the town is full of folks so if you are into shooting people it's a great venue.

I've been to the Ren Festival in Minneapolis alot of years ago. It's an interesting event, lots of people in costumes to shoot.
This is second hand information about the Phoenix Ren Festival (from a very reliable source):
Renaissance Festival
16 Feb. & 1 Mar. $35 p/person
Take a journey with us back into time to
the Renaissance Era. Over 30 acres of
village and marketplace for you to enjoy
street shows, music, comedy and jousting
performed by over 1000 costumed
characters. You’ll also enjoy feasting,
games and rides over 300 artisans and
crafters provide an excellent shopping
experience.
The entrance fee ($35) is a bit steep, but would be interesting none the less.

Grand Falls is VERY cool. Have fun with the directions. It's one of those places that you just have to 'know' how to get there. I'd go after lots of rain (You'll need 4x4, res roads are greeeat), or during snowmelt. The falls are HUGE!
If the water isn't very high, you can hike down and get up behind the falls, on the falls, under the falls, around the falls..
It's funny. There's no 'parking areas' or anything. You'll just drive till you hit the river, then down to the left there's a giant hole in the ground with a massive double step waterfall.
Pics don't do the size justice. It's massive. (http://www.flagstaffcentral.com/Subjects/Nature/Pictures/grandfalls.html)

I would definatley be interested, have a 4x4 can carry 3 + me + gear.
Here is the first set of directions: Latitude: 35.4275 : Longitude: -111.2
Directions: From I-40, 15 miles east of Flagstaff, take exit 211 at Winona. Drive 2.3 miles north to Leupp Rd. Turn right and drive 20.3 miles to unpaved and unsigned Indian Road 6910 (between mileposts 5 and 6). Turn left and drive along this rough road 9.4 miles to the turnoff on the left, which leads to the falls overlook (do not cross the Little Colorado River). Grand Falls can also be accessed from Indian Road 70 (instead of 6910). This road is located 15.0 miles along Leupp Rd (5.3 miles before Road 6910). Follow Road 70 8.4 miles to the same turnoff on the left before the Little Colorado River (Roads 6910 and 70 join together just before the turnoff). I recommend driving along Road 6910 instead of Road 70. Both roads are very rough going and you will need a 4x4 to drive them. But Road 6910 is much easier going and faster than Road 70.

Just kidding - I quickly skimmed through 36 pages of posts and just wanted to say "Hi" to all the new members (can't remember everyone's name but I think I saw Ryan, Amanda, Blue-J, Tom, maybe another Mike?). Also Kristy, I wanted to say that I'm sorry for your loss - I know how important a pet can become in our lives. Also, I think someone asked about galleries for their photos and I will echo disneydork's advice - get on the Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/) bandwagon! :)
Now for a topic that I'm pretty sure has come up before, and many have probably had mixed feelings about, but what does everyone think of moving this conversation to Google Groups? Let me at least throw some pros and cons out there since it isn't a perfect solution but something we might want to consider because...
PROS:
Anyone with an email address can join, no Gmail account needed.
Options are available for instant email response, daily email updates, or no email updates.
No need to login to a forum, you start conversations and reply to conversations through your own email client by using a somename@googlegroups.com email address (where somename is the name that is picked for the group, in our case it could be AZPOTN).
If you use Outlook, Gmail, or any other email client that allows you to create filters, you can group and archive incoming emails from the group so they don't clutter up your inbox.
New conversations for each topic can be created so that we don't have to sort through one long thread for previous answers/questions/comments et cetera.
Google Groups uses Google's search engine so it's easy to search conversations/posts for information, keywords, and members.
Pages can be created for additional information sharing.
Photos and files can be shared directly (up to 100MB), so no need to link as long as we're not uploading huge files.
Members can opt out/unsubscribe at anytime.
It's basically a simple, lean, personal, and free forum.
CONS:
It's an additional forum to keep track of since most of you also post elsewhere on the Canon Digital Photography Forums.
For those who do not have Gmail, Outlook, or a way to setup inbox filters, you may receive a lot of emails in your inbox (that is if you choose to receive an email for every new response - see note about Google Group options in PROS if you missed this).
We're allocated 100MB of total file uploads (although you can't upload files to the Canon Digital Photo forums anyway).
So, what do you all think? Open and honest discussion is key, but please limit your expletives to 1 per sentence. :D All kidding aside though, I really think that creating an AZPOTN Google Group could actually enhance the conversation and info/idea sharing experience as using this single thread for all things photography can become quite laborious even when trying to keep up with a few days of missed conversation.
Anyone care to share their thoughts, ideas, comments, rebuttals, concerns, questions, pet peeves?

Post Scriptum: If you want to see an example of what a Google Group looks like and how it works, visit the "My Other AZ Photo Group" link in my signature and go to the 'Discussions' tab located on the right sidebar.

Listservers are a good idea BUT, they are not immune from the same issues you find here or on usenet. Most notably: OT Posts and thread creep.
Personally, I kinda like how this works here at POTN. I don't think we've ever been "modded" on this thread but I admit I like the fact that there is a "higher power" keeping an eye on things.
I've tried usenet and I've subscribed to a few groups via Google and both eventually decline into way too much babble. Not saying we would, but if we don't, we'd be the exception to the rule.
YMMV...
PS...Greetings from Daytona! We've been busting our humps getting ready to go on the air tomorrow afternoon but I hope to get out for some shooting on Monday and/or Tuesday when we're supposed to have a day off. Hope everyone is well. I already miss the desert.

Hey FlyingPhotog thanks for your input, this is the kind of info I was hoping to see since I know that the if something isn't broke, don't break it (yeah, I know I butchered it) philosophy is in effect here for sure!! As for the lurkers causing trouble on usenets, I completely agree that it's a possibility and an issue.
Just to clarify, Google Groups does give the option to assign moderators that can edit and delete conversations as they wish (and remove spammers) which in this case might not be an issue because the Google Group would only consist of AZPOTN members if it's not an issue on this thread, chances are it wouldn't be an issue on a Google Group comprised of members using this thread. Also, Google Groups allows moderation (and removal) of people who join so that would keep out any randoms trying to jump on the group and advertise their latest product for satisfying your lover in bed. :)
Anyway, just my 2 cents - any other feedback or thoughts on the idea?

Oh we've been "modded" before and well most likely be "modded" again. Once in a great while we get OT just a little.
Group pages are okay for family and things like that, but this is just a small part of something larger.

[quote=Kristy;4868227]You aren't kidding... all these bugs, and flowers, and landscapes... they're beautiful... but I need to practice on people... :)

If you are wanting to photograph people there is a "Fan Fest" down at the ballpak on Saturday the 9th. It goes from 9 to 4. The last couple I've worked had lots of prople, and lots of kids, playing games, getting autographs, eating and just having fun. Its free and they are letting people park in the garage free too. Figure your not a big baseball fan but there will be people there. Just an idea.

I'm kinda new on here but the one thing I like is the ability to share and CC photos as part of the forum. I looked at the Google thing at it just seemed less geard toward putting out a picture or two and talking about it if you want. I also like the fact that there is a bigbrother watching so to speak here that keeps in pretty clear of junk. Just my 2c
By the way Hi:D
