Brendan,
Lightroom isn't a replacement for CS3. It enhances your Photoshop workflow.
No, but Lightroom is fantastic for organizing, developing, slide shows and other features, and if Ed Pierce was right in getting right through the lens first, I am hoping to use CS3 (or 4 or 8 when it comes) less or not at all. I also have Corel PSP XII, and it is every bit as thorough as CS3, has nik Color EFX Pro 2.0 styling and traditional filters included as a registration download bonus, is far less $$$, and much easier to use than CS3.

I'm not sure how many made it to the captivated by light seminar last night but it was great. I think Kristy was originally the one who posted the link here so thank you. I really enjoyed the presenter Ed Pierce and the information was well worth giving up Valentine's Day evening.
The only person I bumped into was Tom O. He was busy checking all the vendors out so I didn't get a chance to chat for long.
I ended up picking up one of the calibration targets and that thing is great. It comes with a good DVD which shows exactly how to use it so I have been playing around in my free time. I also signed up for Photovision for only $35 and that gets you 6 DVD's on the latest lighting techniques sent every other month for a year.
I'm also now looking into Lightroom and Nik Color Efex Pro. Ugh!!! When will the spending ever end??? Anyone here using Lightroom that switched over from CS3?? I am just starting to develop a good workflow in CS3 so I am afraid to make the jump so soon.
Myself,Steve,Kristy, and Scott were at the seminar. Personally... this was the best $20 I have spent towards photography. Tons of information provided...a free 4 hour dvd...discounted rates on products...
I've attended a few seminars over the past couple of years spending hundreds of dollars and I've walked away feeling like I wanted my money back. I walked away from this one feeling like I should send them a check and thank you note.
I just watched the first 2 hour dvd and it was just a great as the seminar. They take you through different photo shoots with working pros... You get to see how they work the shoot; post processing, file management, marketing/sales. Very creative and inspiring.
Did they push products...yes...of course... but in a subtle way... same with the dvd... you see what the top pros are using and you want to have the same gear. :) Now all I need is a light set...85mm 1.2II 16-35mm II a 90mm tilt shift...an assistant or two...a studio...an accountant...and on and on. LOL Seriously... cool stuff....
Just my thoughts on the night... I walked away very pleased to say the least.

I was there too, and since I've not had the pleasure before, I saw/met no one! Still I stayed there until almost the end, sneaking out at the beginning of what looked like a call to donate your time to photograph ill and dying babies segment (I could not take it in my condition); but the lessons were great!
I was the one, sitting midway to the rear, still coughing out whatever I could breathe, over this d**n flu. I was no longer contagious; my five-day fever had ended 24 hrs before, but today I am still coughing and I am at day 10. Good thing I had a flu shot; according to today's AZ Republic article, my condition might have only been worse w/o it.
As for the spending, I bought the 24" and 2-6" targets with DVD special, and the $35 Photovision subscription. I figured after the $19 entry fee, this was well worth it, overall. But the desire to buy more of the gear; it is contagious once you see it in use, like this. The pros make it look so easy.

I'm not sure what kind of experience your looking for but I shoot birds all the time. Not saying I'm good at it but you can see some of my bird shots on my web page www.NatureCallsPhotography.net (http://www.NatureCallsPhotography.net) if you want. If you are looking for someone to talk to and share info about shooting birds I'm up for that.

I haven't been there in a long time and don't tend to shoot captive birds, but I'll add my $0.02 anyway. Lighting is usually not optimal, so you might need a support of some kind if it's allowed in there. A little fill flash might also help.

Actually, there were a few "no trespassing" signs but I really don't know if anyone cared - with the exception of one curious guy who owned a big chunk of land we were walking around. Luckily though, he was cool about it (and possibly looking for a money making opportunity). :D

Yeah, I decided not to go to this one... There is a "Bellies and Babies" seminar coming here in June that I'd love to attend... Sandy Puc is teaching it... I love her style with newborns, and since that's totally my thing, it would be great for me to go and learn something.
She's also the person who started the "Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep" thing... I've been watching that for a while and thinking about it... weird, I know... but after watching her little sales pitch at the seminar on Thursday, I'm closer to thinking it is something I could do... Does that make me a freak?
Other than that.... Frank Doorhoof is coming here again in June as well... He will be teaching on location stuff and is looking for a location in the Los Angeles area... he said he's trying to find a mansion or something cool to hold the session at... So that would be awesome.. I love his work too! :)
That's it from this place for now.... :) HAPPY DAY!!

Anyone interested in a group effort on this eclipse event? I'm thinking somewhere like north end of Cave Creek road. Not too long of a trip for a work night, but certainly much darker skies than downtown Phoenix. Or even better, DC Ranch. Even if the eclipse shoot is destroyed by cloud cover, DC Ranch, I think, makes a nice photo target on its own.

haha, thanks. but right now there's so much cloud cover that I don't think I will be able to see it tonight :-( I hope someone else will get something good.
Also, Welcome to Kamrie. nice of you to come here and say hello. I'm some times in the west valley myself in nwphx, but the rest of the time I'm in flag trying to finish my last semester :-) so yeah, westside photogs! woohoo :-P

Hey! I seem to be drawn to nature shots... trees/lakes/etc lol. just carry my camera with me everywhere... whenever an opportunity strikes... i whip it out. Ummm.... no gallery, never thought about it. I've been fiddling around on the forum, an y'all seem to have one. Yeah, total failure on the eclipse. Had some fun with various other shots (http://xanthotech.com/gallery/v/Eclipse/) though. Then the rain REALLY started coming down. We tried to use the windshield sunshade thingy I had in my car for shelter to protect the camera for a bit, but that didn't work too well, and I totally forgot to pack a trash bag in my gear to build a makeshift poncho for the camera.

Hi Dana,
I was the one you met with Steve...don't feel bad, I'm horrible with names myself. The only reason I recognized your post was your mentioning of a horrible computer death when we met :). Anyway, glad to see you in here.
I concur with Hatch, a LOT of background clutter on most all of my shots from the festival. It's pretty much going to be that way in crowded events without total freedom of shooting angles so it is to be expected I guess. I have a couple decent shots I need to post with some basic PP. Not sure if I'm going back today now as my wife has too much writing to do today :(.
Terry, this post sure has been a hit. I bet you had no idea when you posted a single message that it'd go on for years!

Hatch,
I just got done looking at your gallary. Looks like you enjoy a lot of macro. Any suggestions on macro lenses?
I'm not really a fan of macro ...this is the only lens I own. ROFL :D
Seriously...
Yes... I am a macro nut case. I like to shoot other things as well but... the macro world has me hooked.
A few questions to ask yourself...
Budget
Shooting style /goals
Weight of the lens and camera shake...
Tripod...hand-held shooting
I've used the Canon 100mm the past 4 years. As with 99% of macro lenses from all brands... it is wicked sharp!!! It isn't very heavy...even though it has a lot of glass in it. The working distance in very nice. You can add extension tubes to increase your magnification. Even though the manual says you can't use a teleconverter with the lens you can attach an extension tube to the TC and then attach the lens.
If you shoot hand-held.. .this is a great lens for the job. The weight won't beat you down.
The reason I mention shooting style/goals... you can take close up shots that look great with most any lens without the need for a true macro lens. If you really want to see all the amazing details...then a 1:1 macro lens is the way to go IMO.
I think the Canon 100mm is around $400 or so. It can be used for other types of photography... just know if you photograph people with it.. .all the details show... the good and the bad. :)
I wanted a little more working distance and great bokeh the 180mm macro lenses produce. So... I bought the Sigma 180mm macro. I was nervous as I haven't purchased anything other than Canon. I'm so glad I bought the lens and saved some money. It is performing very well. I love the bokeh in the shots. The extra working distance is nice. It is harder to shoot than the 100mm due to the focal length... the weight isn't bad but you notice a difference. I would suggest a monopod or tripod. I've used the monopod with it several times... very handy!
The Sigma 105mm lens is supposed to be excellent as well as the Sigma 150mm.
For an all around/general purpose macro lens... you just can't beat the Canon 100mm macro IMO.
Hope this helps.

I was the one you met with Steve...don't feel bad, I'm horrible with names myself. The only reason I recognized your post was your mentioning of a horrible computer death when we met :). Anyway, glad to see you in here.

Thanks Hatch, great info to consider.
Will probably go with the Canon 100mm for general purpose. Going to Hawaii on the 21st of March and have nothing in the Macro dept. Looking forward to all the opportunities presented there.
What Hatch says...
But, FWIW, the 17-40 f/4L can shoot rediculously close in. True it isn't Macro but you get double duty from it as both a close up lens and a great (read: sick sharp) WA on a crop or UWA on FF...
Just tossin' in a couple of pennies while waiting out the rain in Fontana...

Great time of year to get out.

Jay is correct... and ... with the UWA the sunsets would be wonderful to capture with the lens. Not to mention the rest of the Island..

Thanks for the 17-40 f/4L option Jay, but the reviews I have read (B & H) give mixed opinions on sharpness (could just be their copies? :( ). I have the 24-105mm f/4L already, would this cover the land/seascapes?
Thanks again for all the friendly welcomes, and advise.

Ok - the trip report is published along with a picture for the Godess, showing Miss Tammie what she missed out on! Hope nothing serious precluded your presence Tammie.
Hello more new people!
FYI: I try to keep track of what we have planned for the group and also the results of outings along with a funny or two. You can see what is planned by going to http://www.azpotn.com (http://www.azpotn.com/).
And talk about outings - Frank was making some noises yesterday about getting over to the Botanical Gardens this coming weekend - something about blooms and the rain ------ and wanting to capture some more desert shots before getting into the lush German forests!

Nice shots Geoff!
I have a few to share. I am afraid the background noise was pretty bad for the vast majority of shots but here you go. First off was the awwww picture:

24mm on FF is wide but not so much on 1.6x bodies. The 17-40 would get you wider (and closer...) I hadn't seen any poor reviews of the 17-40 but I understand how it is to trust the sources we trust.
BTW, I think I owe you a welcome!

Great shots from the Japanese fest there campers. Geoff gets my gold star (for all that's worth...) for the flying drumstick experiments. Nice job of getting your gear to capture what your mind saw! Beautiful...
