Kristy,
I know it may not be any comfort, but what you are seeing, is exactly what my 6 month old 5D does. It does it with every lens I own. When I open the original image, I can definately tell that my focus point is at the very end of the DOF, or even beyond it. I really don't think it's my lenses, because they don't show this issue on my 20D.
I've come to the conclusion that I'm just going to live with it. I've gone round and round with Canon service, and just watched you go through it. In my mind, I've determined it's a feature for studio work. :) It helps me get that "out of focused background" look so much more easily.
Brian,
This (IMO) shouldn't be the case... the issue has me thinking... and of course this is just a WAG... that shooting distance is playing an issue with how you both are shooting. I shot with the 20D and loved it... making the move to the 5D I had read the DOF is shallow compared to the 20D. I had to move back some to nail more shots. So... as I just mentioned in an email to Kristy... my keeper rate is low when shooting F/4.0 and below... but... I'm not getting the results you both are producing.
Is it the cameras? The distance to subject?
We recently photographed a model and one of the mistakes I made while shooting wide open on the 70-200 is I didn't adjust my f/stop while moving in closer and closer to her... so... I ended up with just slivers of her face in the focal plane. Another lesson leared the hard way :) But... again... where I placed the focal point is where the camera focused and from that area moving outwards the image was in focus....fading off out of the focal plane. If all that jumbo makes any sense.
So... is it the camera? Defective 5d's ? Or shooting styles? Just some my .02 and curiosity...
Hatch
Terry mentions AI Servo... good call :) I use it 95% of the time...
Another helpful item... a focusing screen for lens f/2.8 and faster.... my keepr rate when up... best $35 I spent IMO.

You mean 95% of the time or 95% of the time shooting people?

The camera is set to AI Servo all the time.. I hardly ever change it off the mode. Even when shooting people... I switched to one shot mode in the studio. I never use AI focus... just me but I didn't find it useful.

Okay guys... I'm just sitting here reading this all again... and it hit me..... DUH!! I used to always shoot around f/3.5 to f/4.5 with the 20D. The sweet spot really is around f/4.5.
So somewhere along the line, I decided i need to learn to shoot wide open... and started practicing at it.... Then I bought the 5D (which really was defective... ask Hatch and Steve... the tested it with me...). And as you test a lens/camera combo. The focusing problems are most notable wide open.... so then I got in the habit of shooting wide open because I was constantly testing the freaking thing. LOL...
So now.... I realize I need my shutter at 1/160th or higher to get the sharpness I need from the shot (as I am not steady Eddie by any stretch)..... Which puts me at a wider aperature to increase shutter speed. I'd like to keep ISO under 640 in a perfect world, because I am not a fan of too much grain. I don't want grain unless I'm going B&W.....
Pixel peeping is a problem... I admit it.... but it's important because if I need to print something at 20x30... It has to be a darn perfect shot to look good enough to make the grade. So my goal is to have every shot that I produce be the quality of 20x30 print....
Are my expectations too high? Do I need to stop down my aperature? Should I step back and not shoot so close to my subject? Yes, Yes, and Yes.
Will someome please grab me by the shoulders and shake very well until this all sinks into my thick head... Or else soon I will throw away my camera to the first $20 bid on Ebay and run as fast as I can to Fry's Electronics and get me a really cool P&S camera.. got any recommendations.....?

And Brian.... I hope you aren't getting those results consistently.. I just could absolutely not live with it that way.. I refuse. And the funny thing is that I never had problems with my 20D until after Canon messed with it.....
Did I say more testing to follow? Tomorrow is a new day with a new aperature setting. :)

Kristy,
Good luck with your testing. I found that it didn't matter what f/ stop I used, it still happened. If I did stay with an aperature around f/8 to f/11 I could usually salvalge the photos. I really think it is an issue with the 5D. I initially tried one in mid 2007, but I returned it because of this issue. It was even worse than the one I have now. Let me go through some of my RAW files and see if I have some good examples. These are in the home studio with 2 300 watt modeling lights on full, and enought light so that focus isn't an issue.

Hatch,
AI Servo doesn't help. You have to be able to actually get a focus lock initially. Those focus points are really small, and trying to line them up with a small target, like an eye, which is usually moving is a royal pain. Besides if you are shooting AI server, would you really want to use a tripod?

Actually, the sweet spot is going to be more between f/5.6 and f/11 but let's take baby steps here...

Nothing wrong with shooting wide open... Since everything in photography is more or less a compromise, in order to dwell in the land of "Wide Open" you must sacrifice something to the Gods of Light. In this case, it's your DOF. (Is that Zen enough for everyone?) ;)

Your logic works in theory. However, it reads lilke you're painting yourself into a corner before you even pick up the camera. Too many constraints lead to too much frustration. You have lights, right? Throw enough light at ISO 800 and up (especially with a 5D) and I think you'll be suprised at how clean the images can be. The real bugaboo is noise in the shadows. If you aren't doing heavy "Low Key" stuff, it's not as bad as you might think.

So drop your DPI down... Not every print has to be tack sharp and be printed at 300dpi. Lots of stuff gets printed big as low as 180dpi and as long as it's not being inspected at a distance of 2 inches, it's fine. Heck my default with the Canon 9000 is 240dpi.
Are my expectations too high? Do I need to stop down my aperature? Should I step back and not shoot so close to my subject? Yes, Yes, and Yes.
God, I feel like I'm on that A&E show "Intervention..."

I think that's what we're (electronically) doing...!
Or else soon I will throw away my camera to the first $20 bid on Ebay and run as fast as I can to Fry's Electronics and get me a really cool P&S camera.. got any recommendations.....?
I'll give you $25 for it hear and now. Toss in the 24-70 f/2.8 and I'll raise my offer to $35. I hear the G9 makes nice pictures... <G, D, R>

I was about 10 feet or so from him, so DOF shouldn't have been a problem. I was holding the camera in the portrait position, using the focus point at upper left (10 'oclock position when in portrail orientation).

Okay, so I don't know how to multi-quote the same message like you did.... see I'm just whack all around...
Anyway, yes I have lights... HOWEVER.... I am a natural light junkie! I don't want to be confined to setting up lights everytime I shoot. The whole reason I bought the 5D is to shoot natural light more effectively with the beautiful ISO handling of the thing....
Thanks for the intervention... We'll see what tomorrow produces..... and if anyone wants to "teach" me a lesson or 50... I'm all ears! :)

Oh geez Brian! This is UNBELIEVABLE! It is EXACTLY the same thing I have been dealing with... I mean EXACTLY! and you know what... It sucks!! And it is ABSOULTELY UNACCEPTABLE.... there is no way I will settle at that level... so hopefully my testing will prove otherwise, or else... it goes again.
I can be an anal perfectionist at times... (okay, I am woman, so give me that..) and I can't live with those results.... If I were you I'd be so not happy and Canon would be tired of me.... Let's just keep our fingers crossed... Hatch has the 5d and 24-70 Combo and it is NOT performing that way... so I know that the equipment can function properly.. and we both should not settle for less.
Send those pics to Canon and raise a little hell.... LOL.. maybe they will ban all people from the Phoenix area... They will buy us Nikon gear to just get us out of their system... Ha!

Kristy,
One thing I forgot to mention is that it is less severe when using the center focus point without recomposing (the old bulls-eye shot). However, like you, I can't use the center focus point for portraits. The recompose is usually worse than the front focus from using an alternate focus point.
Oh, and as an FYI, I did follow Hatch's advice and get the matte focus screen. It helped a bit, but not a whole lot. It did make the viewfinder considerably darker, though.

Yeah.... I've read that the center focus point is the strongest point... and MANY people us the back button focus method... and SWEAR that it improves their images dramatically... once they master it... BUT... I'm impatient... and a huge creature of habit.. I tried it a couple of times and just didn't feel good with it... maybe that's the answer for us.
On the focusing screen... I don't understand how it changes the look of the viewfinder.. it is what it is... right? I don't get how it works... so? DUH...
I'd rather have a rule of thirds screen... now that would be cool for me! LOL...
Freaking cameras... we should burn them all and take up painting or drawing. Let's all run off to a strange commune (spelling) and force ourselves to become sketch artists... If you're nice you can use pastels...

AI Servo does help if you are chasing around a subject. If you are in a studio setting... on a tripod...no need to use the function.
Looking at your shots... you need a new 5D. They look just like Kristy's photos and for the money we pay for the cameras... this shouldn't be happening. We used my 5d+24-70 combo at the last show in the studio... one shot setting... and I can tell you the images are stupid sharp even shot in raw...straight out of the camera. I didn't have to shapen the majority of photos...no kidding. Again... from the shots you posted... your camera is defective. I can shoot at any f/stop...keeping in mind the distance to the subject without issue. This is the beauty of natural light and/or fast glass. I wouldn't settle for a camera that is limiting. For the $ you have invested... I would send it back.
I'm hoping when Kristy shots tomorrow at a little further distance from he subject...she will have better results...
You can use my combo anytime to see the difference... just let me know. Maybe I got lucky... but... I think they should all perform like mine to a degree...
Just some thoughts... let me know if you want some sample shots from the studio... I would be happy to send them over.

All great advice Jay... but... I can tell you... Kristy isn't going to shoot beyond ISO 640 ROFL ... we fight about this... even though you can't see the noise in prints... she is a little apprehensive going beyond the 640 range. I've printed shots at ISO 1600 and loved them... but... we all have different standards. Hers are a little higher than mine :)
Good stuff

Hatch,
I'd love to see some sample studio work. Hopefully you shoot raw too, so we can directly compare your raw files with mine, as the coversion to .jpg normally has some sharpening involved.
You know, now that I think about it, it might be good for you, I and maybe Kristy to get together and test some equipment. If you have a known good body and lense(s), then that can be our control. I can try your body and lens, and vice versa. We can then also swap your lens onto my body, and my lenses onto your body. That should let us nail down, without any uncertainty, whether it is a problem with the body, or the lenses.

Send me a PM with an email address you would like the raw files sent to... not a problem at all. :) I was a little surprised you were/are having the same issues as Kristy. Again, just my opinion but given the lighting, the mood, the subject, the setting... Brian's photo is perfect. I'll say it again: P - E - R - F - E - C - T...
People pay very big bucks to get photographic portraiture that approaches the quality of a fine oil painting which (IMNSHO) his photo accomplishes...!!! A photo like this, when sharpened to the extreme may as well be fingernails on a chalk board.
A photo has to have some bite, some intangible that makes you want to study it and then study it some more. Without some sense of having been made by the hand of man, a photo looses any sense of soul or feeling. Photography is about the manipulation and capture of light. NOT wrangling 1s and 0s...

I think the shots Brian has produced are wonderful! I wish I could produce shots half as nice. Howerver, if he is limited to using only f/8-f-11 (which is great for studio ) but...if his camera is producing the shots like Kristy's camera had produced.... I would be MAD:evil: and I would have to send it back to Canon.

Song clip... couldn't resist....
Artist Dido... Song, White Flag...
Well I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be.... (just not with Canon at the moment)
Okay, so this is great banter, isn't it... I hope you take some comments with a bit of sarcasm.... because that's my specialty. :)
Anyway... Jay.. I agree that Brian's shot is FANTASTIC.... is beautiful.. However, it's not up to par... You can't even see the poor boy's eyelashes, but you can see the threads in his pants... that's just downright irritating....
I feel the pain. Maybe our expectations are too high... All I know for sure is that before I picked up the 5D, and before Canon took my gear and messed around with it.. I could bank on freaking eyelashes in my shots... and I could focus spot on every single time without a doubt if I was at f/3.5 or higher....
So yeah... I could run out and rent Nikon... to prove it... but I have files on my system that are enough to satisfy me... and the gear should perform to spec... I expect it. I work too hard for my money to just toss up my hands and deal with it...
I'm sure I'm making errors this time around... wouldn't second guess it until proper testing is done.... Especially since I'm shooting full frame and perhaps that takes some getting used to and some changes need to be made.... But I also know that I shot a newborn with Hatch's gear and some DOF when using natural light was very thin... too thin, to be honest... but the focus still landed on at least one eye in those shots... not on the pillow or the bed, or the blanket.... on one eye.
So... if you focus the eye... and Zoom Browser shows the eye at the point of capture... and your LCD shows pants... a belt buckle or a hand in focus... That's a major problem.
And the copping out on the stereo-type... Naw.... that's just the dry humor that I love... I'll forgive you though.. After all you are a man, and you were just born into it by no choice of your own... ;)
Off my soap box now....

Jay...
Kristy...if you have a few of those shots.. from the testing session.. you should post them... horrible!!!
I smell a testing session in the works... all 5d owners should meet and test... Adam? Terry? Fogive me if I miss a anyone. I'm free this weekend... name the time and place. :)
Like I said, I have one too and I'd be happy to give it to someone to try this weekend. In fact, I'd like for someone to wring mine out. I'll be out of town from Thursday to Monday but can come get it Monday evening or Tuesday.
Just let me know...

A few shots from this morning...
The originals are have enough motion blur in them I couldn't print the shots... they look bad. But... with the magic of resizing for web and sharpening... they look decent. I need to crank up the shutter speeds.... these little miner bees do not like to sit in one place for long. They will hover for a second or two. Good times!

I use the back focus button/center focus and recompose and am more than satisfied with my 5D. I also use the 24-105 f4L IS.
Here is an image from lightroom with no sharpening then save for web in photoshop to get it to size to post.
This was iso 100 f4 ss 1/100 88mm, the full image and the crop on the eyes. I've seen the results from Frank's 5D.
If there is a get together to check out equipment, let me know and I'll bring my toys along.

And I won't put my hands up and surrender

LOL...Cute...
Okay, so this is great banter, isn't it... I hope you take some comments with a bit of sarcasm.... because that's my specialty. :)
No worries... I smell what you're cooking (speaking of stereotypes...hehehe...)
Anyway... Jay.. I agree that Brian's shot is FANTASTIC.... is beautiful.. However, it's not up to par... You can't even see the poor boy's eyelashes, but you can see the threads in his pants... that's just downright irritating....
Bear in mind, however, we're all looking at a compressed JPG so don't judge a book too much by it's web version... ;) The proof will be in the RAW file...
Then you have every right to crawl deeply up whatever Canon orifice you choose...no dispute here. But if everything was sweetness and light, why'd it to to Canon in the first place? What suddenly made everything not right? Maybe there is a flaw in the 5D? Why not try renting a 1DMkIII or 1DsMkIII and see what that yields?
So yeah... I could run out and rent Nikon... to prove it...
See above regarding alternate Canon products...
but I have files on my system that are enough to satisfy me... and the gear should perform to spec... I expect it. I work too hard for my money to just toss up my hands and deal with it...
Maybe I'm not digging deeply enough into my own gear but there is something in all of this that really has me scratching my head. How (if a body or lens actually is physically out of kilter) can you get any keepers at all? If you use the same body, same lens and hit the same spot with your focus point, shouldn't all images be off by the same amount and in the same direction? All misfocused slightly deep or slightly shallow depending on whether you're dealing a front focus or back focus issue. How can there be ANY keepers?
I strongly suggest someone bring a laptop and y'all do some tethered shooting so you can see the test images on something better than the camera's LCD. It would also allow for making slight adjustments on the fly so you don't have to wait until you offload the CF card.
And the copping out on the stereo-type... Naw.... that's just the dry humor that I love... I'll forgive you though.. After all you are a man, and you were just born into it by no choice of your own... ;)
Fortunately, owing to advances in modern medicine, should I ever decide to change, it's an option... However, unlike simply changing camera brands, that kind of hardware change would:
- Be much more expensive..
- Be much more time consuming..
- Mean I'd be unable to keep my hands off myself and never leave the house to go shoot.
So I guess I'll stick with my birth gender and just learn to live with my faults...

Allright.... one more peep from the peanut gallery over here...
Mister Jay...
I bought the 5D... Ups Delivered it as I was on my way out the door to shoot a body building competition... Decided to use it, so threw the box in the car and headed to Flagstaff for the weekend. During the show, I chimped... at some point and realized that my focus was off.... at chest and not on the eyes... in studio with strobes at f/8 or f/9... thought it was my lens.. (24-70) so threw on the 85mm and finished shooting... upon downloading... EVERY shot was off... pretty much. So I PS'd the eyes and spent way too much time processing.
Sent it back to Canon... and they requested my lenses.... so they tweaked the lenses to "optimize them" for the 5d... So then the 24-70 no longer focues properly on the 20D, and the 5D was still off... All in all... sent gear back 4 times... Did tripod test chart, studio test with tripod and strobe, Put my lens on other body, other lens on my body, etc it was crazy.... and finally they replaced the 5D considering it defective... and took another 10 days to replace parts on the 24-70 because the chassis was broken (previously reported as loose).... what the heck is a chassis anyway....
So now I have a new 5D and almost new 24-70 back in my posession...
After almost 5 months..... I'm gun shy to say the least.
The LCD I'm speaking of is on my Desk.. not the camera.. I'd never trust the camera LCD... I shoot RAW, I sharpen, I check Zoom Browser for focus point, etc....
I guess you get some keepers due to luck... with focal distance, plane, etc.... larger aperatures.. and a good relationship with Photoshop... LOL.
So that's the history... All I really want to know is that the gear performs to spec and I have a problem.... I'm so willing to admit user error... but if the gear is not performing.. I'd like to get it taken care of sooner rather than later... no surprises.. you know.
As for the gender change... LOL... I'll just keep laughing at your response... :)

Since were tossing up 5D images, I did a little digging to find one that was shot at f/2.8 (EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS) and that showed some skin detail in the full size crop...
No adjustments at all. Right from the camera, into Lightroom, opened in CS3 and saved as MAX JPGs...
I don't have any of the software loaded that shows exactly where the focus point is but I'm pretty darn sure I was right on his left eye. Maybe even the left corner of his left eye.
Hope these fit the criteria:

okay... let's pixel peep! My favorite game.. and then to bed...
So typically, my front focus problem lends to the lower right or left of where I focused... i this case I'd look at his lips or shirt collar. But that's just where my eye has been trained to look... after 5 months oif it... LOL...
I think it looks fine, but I'd be interested to see a bit lower. How about a tight horizontal crop....? Just on eye mid brow and then down.
Don't you have zoom browser...? It came with your camera's software bundle. It shows focus point at time of capture.

Jay,
Nice detail and looks sharp. On a tight headshot (where the face is a majority of the image) I'm very picky about the eye sharpness. But when the eyes are less than 10% of the total image then I have to balance how sharp the eyes are in relation to the rest of the image.
What am I saying?!!? The image is junk... the 5D and 70/200 combo is worthless, but I'll give you $50 and take them off your hands!! :)
Hatch1921

Looks great to me... I think while shooting wide open we all have to keep in mind DOF and distance to subject. For a f/2.8 shot .... this looks great to me.
One of the bodybuilding shows we shot.. .I had to shoot ISO 1600 @ f/2.8 with the 70-200L IS... at 30 ft the subject was sharp and in the focal plane from head to toe... move me in to 10 feet away and then the DOF really starts to work against the shot...
As I mentioned previously... I made the mistake last time out...shooting the model... I had the 70-200 wide open and I moved in...up to just a few feet away from the subject and her right eye looks great... the rest of the image is OOF thanks to the wonderful bokeh the lens produces. LOL
The issue Kristy had on the last camera body was unreal. We shot Steve and with the focal point on his eye/s his lower right hand would be in focus and the rest of the shot would be oof. It was insane!!

No these are the old ones... just showing the point.... of when focus is off vs. when DOF is off... These are definitely a focus point issue, not shallow DOF problem.

Just to keep the conversation lively...
Here's what I see when I look at each in original size, starting in the upper left and going L to R, Top to Bottom:
1) Relative to FP (Focus Point) the sharpest thing in the frame is the "R" in Princess and the sweatshirt texture near her right armpit. AF (Actual Focus) appears to be shallow but similar across the image.
2) Relative to FP, the sharpest thing in the frame are his ears and the seam of his sweatshirt which appears to be in the same plane as his ears. This time AF is deeper than FP but not by much if you consider the depth at which his face meets her hair isn't that much in front of his ears.
3) Relative to FP, the sharpest thing(s) in the frame are the Oreo Icing and the third knuckle of her left hand. AF seems to be shallower than FP but across the entire image.
4) Relative to FP, agree that the chip is sharper than his eyes, however there is hair on his head equally sharp. AF seems to be shallower than FP but the same across the image vertically.
5) Relative to FP, agree that the zipper pull is sharper than where the FP falls. Again, AF is deeper than FP. It makes sense that her foot would be sharper since you have more DOF behind your subject than in front. If the AF is deeper than FP, then more behind would be in focus.
6) Relative to FP, agree that her sweatshirt textue is sharper than the eye. However, this one doesn't miss by nearly as much as the others because (to me) the butterfly tattoo looks in focus. AF is maybe 2mm shallower than FP on this one.
7) Relative to FP, agree that the cup is sharper than the AF on the eye. IMO, this one misses the most of all examples you've posted.
So what have we learned here? Frankly, I haven't a damn clue.
Hey, I had some extra time so I thought I'd disect the evidence.
I'd be curious to hear what others see in these images. Like I said above, most do appear to miss shallow but a couple missed deep. It would make more sense to me that if a body or lens has a flaw, that flaw would manifest itself in a predictable way and not miss shallow on one shot then miss deep on the next. Or more importantly, miss shallow left, shallow right, then deep, then deep right and so on...
Sometimes I wonder if the electronic goodies we have in modern digital cameras are more of a hinderance than a help. At least with my AE-1 and FD 50mm f/1.4 (the original Nifty Fifty) I could rest assured that if it wasn't in focus, I had no one to blame but myself (or a warped film gate, bad batch of film, Sun Spots, Aliens, The Dog ate my focus scale...)
Looking forward to the results of Operation 5D Showdown...

Anyway, yes I have lights... HOWEVER.... I am a natural light junkie! I don't want to be confined to setting up lights everytime I shoot. The whole reason I bought the 5D is to shoot natural light more effectively with the beautiful ISO handling of the thing....

LOL, I was partially furiously arranging my photos into the port. It was getting a little hectic getting all my pics ready for being printed then making sure they were all cropped to the right size (I actually forgot to do several of them :-/) and then also finding out that I forgot to clean off the dirty dirty bg. oh, and I made the decision just a day before to add some space to my photos so you can actually see the model in the photos and not crop off heads and feet. AHHHH...But, i did get it done in time and turned it in this past monday. I'm gonna post up my updated photos onto flickr here tomorrow after my presentation. I have a teacher that is a friend on my flickr so I'm gonna keep it a bit of a surprise of which photos I chose for my port.
I just hope I wake up in time tomorrow for me to shave and get all my clothes ready. we have to dress up like it's for an interview. I think I will try my slightly larger jacket. hope it works out okay for tomorrow :-P

Cool smoke shot Hatch.... I've been wanting to try that for a long time.. I bought this triange shaped insence almost a year ago now and it continues to sit in my house... Wonder where I put it...
Anyway, AWESOME work as usual! So that's what people with no kids do when they have a day off work, huh? Nice.... :)
Okay, so if anyone has 8 minutes to spare.. have a peek here and feel free to tear it apart.... It's a slideshow, takes a few minutes to load, so be patient if you want to check it out. This is pretty much my "place" and the thing I love about doing what I do. Not the best pics I've ever taken, but I hope to have captured a mood just the same.. a memory, a moment in the life.... preserved. Know what I mean...
Here's the spot... hope it works... http://ksnyderphoto.smugmug.com/gallery/4786707_JFwN4#284133590_LpLyF
Thank you kindly :) just trying to fight the boredom :)

Hey Ryan... how'd the presentation go today?
It went alright. got asked a question I wasn't too prepared for, but I thought I had kind of explained it in the beginning. a teacher didn't like my plastic holders for my pics. he also didn't like that I put, what I thought was my best pic, as the last pic...but I had also put the 2nd best photo first. but it all went alright. a lot of my peers like my photos so that helps me out a lot. Anyways, i will post them up on flickr here soon and post some of the better shots on here soon.
Jay, great photo of Monte V. You should see it at night when it's lit up. some nice night shots there.

Kristy, I like what I've seen in the slideshow but, I've already seen like 3-4 today and one of them was like 15 min long. this one seems just as long, sorry :-/ idk, I think if it was shorter in length you would keep more attention. oh and I'm not a big fan of those ken burns effects. kinda takes away from the photo when you zoom a way you don't want it too...but that's just me.

Wow some awesome photos here lately. Well actually almost always. Cool shots of the smoke Hatch and Jay that Green Heron turned out great!
A quick question for anyone that's traveled to St Thomas in the Virgin Islands. How safe do you think it would be to bring my camera gear along. I really want to take all my stuff with me but I am scared to death of something happening to it.
Obviously I would keep it with me at all times possible but I would guess that the hotel (blue beards castle) should have a safe to keep it in if I had to go say snorkeling or something right?
Any thoughts?

Atta Boy on your presentation. I have to think it's very difficult to be too critical in a photography curiculum (sp?) since you're dealing in individual interpretations.
Aside from Exposure*, WB, Focus, Framing (look space, not chopping off limbs, headroom, etc) there can't be much that the individual student isn't well within his or her right to defend and justify.
(*Following Ryan's exploits got me to thinking about the couple of B&W film classes I took "back in the day" and students today have an unblinking "judge and jury" to deal with that I never did... The Histogram. The Digits don't lie...)
Thanks for the comment on the MV... The original was just a nice snapshot whcih meant it was perfect for the "Little Photoshop of Horrors..."

Man that's such a tough call...
You want to be able to get the best possible shots from an exotic location but you probably don't want to stress over your gear while you're trying to unwind...
The easy (but not cheap) solution would be a G9 and an underwater housing. Then you've got the best of both worlds. 12Mp, Digic III and you can take it snorkling to boot...
Have you talked to your insurance broker about a policy rider specifically for your gear? And, is it in force outside the 50 states? USVI is a territory but I'd still want the fine print deciphered for me...
Like I said, tough call. Good Luck... :D

Ryan - Glad all of your hard work is paying off!
Hatch - Ohhhh smoke! Nice. Now get out your Ravi Shankar Albums!
Flying Photo - Heron looks good and the pp on building is nice effect.
Here is the new gear that arrived. A Beach Rolly. Lets you haul your gear and take a load off and even has a little sun shade while you wait for that perfect shot. Very well built and engineered German product. It is light and folds up quite small and wheels have a ring clip and come off in a second.

Can you hang your gear on the back while sitting down on the front?
Does it balance ok with gear on the back if you get up?

Thanks. No. You do not want to get up while gear is hanging off the back. It is an excellent question. The balance is way off. The unit is super light, but quite well built. You can lift the whole thing with your finger. A small tarp would serve the purpose to set gear beside you. Also useful for those macro shots lying on your belly!

No worries... just put it out there. It's about 8 minutes total... This is what I show the parents prior to looking at the hard copy proofs.... I always do a sit down proofing/ordering session... more personal than just posting pics on line...
Who's Ken Burns.. and what's the effect...? Ignorance is Bliss... But do tell, so I can know if i need to make changes.... Movement of the slides? I go back and forth on that.... I think movement makes it come alive.. but can easily be overdone... I start with an automated random movement, and then make adjustments to soften the effects...
Here is the new gear that arrived.
That is a flipping cool toy you have there... :) There are so many toys to choose from... sometimes it's overwhelming. Looks like you'll be traveling in style from now on. :) Enjoy!

- Green Heron: Damn near stepped on him first. Very calm bird. Really happy with that particular image. Birding isn't something I've tried very often but I can see where people enjoy adding different species to their captured list.
- Challenging Hatch: I don't think he's sweating. He's still our resident "Macro Man..."
- Hotel: Like I said, it was a nice snap but needed something to give it some "umph..." I like how it turned out. It looks even better on PBase because the top of the frame just fades into the background.

I spent all day making "chum" to feed my fish for the next six months. I didn't think those are the kind of shots you'd all want to see, but I was just popping in. Good thing my post doesn't smell like my house.
Here's my photos to share of historic Flagstaff. I can't remember the name of the hotel. It is on the corner directly across from the train station with the tiny covered parking lot:
1 - need fresh air, get neighbor's wall:
http://www.projectbat.com/potn/flag1.jpg
2 - bathroom too small? It looks like they scratched away with a chisel by hand to make this door clear the toilet so you could even get in. Check out that clearance!
http://www.projectbat.com/potn/flag2.jpg
Of course when the door was closed, it meant there was a nice little window to look out in to the room. :)

I may be getting a photo or two published in the Richmond (VA) Times Dispatch...
They're doing an article on our chief spotter (guy who help the Producer and Director find good side by side racing action around the track...) and they needed a photo or two of him "on the job" to run with the article.
I shot him this morning and forwarded the images so if they like 'em they'll run them. Can't post them until after they run but I'll add them to the old "Scenes From The Road" gallery on PBase later in the month.

You can't see the noise in the shot... I was just saying the shutter speed was a little nutty. :) 1/2000th is a little much... this was resized from an 11x14... it is a little sharp...the eyes anyway from the resizing.
Skin...decent or fake? Well... if you have to ask... I did my job. ROFL I touched him up... skin smoothing but nothing like I would for a glam shot. Healing brush for the complection... a little cloning/dodging/burning....
All in all... not a ton. Looks like more that it is...again...I think that is compression from the resize... the original you still see skin pores and detial....

The processing as Steve mentioned is a little flat or it's just missing something. The 3rd shot is going to have his mother worried... he look 18 and ready to go on a date or 3. HA hA! I like the tone/pose/processing of the shot. Very nice!
Keep up the great work.
I had to post the link Jay... I got the feeling they had a slight chip on their shoulder. ROFL

Gee, ya think?
Can you say "burnout?"
I find it interesting that they aren't burning the two real bridges though because they blame "Snot nosed kids and bitchy brides" but not "overly aggressive/intrusive parents or Mother's of Bride's..."
Sort of leaves a door open as it were...

Dunno why you two don't go into business together...you're like two halves of the same brain...
Super portraiture by both!! Well Done...

haha, I work this Sat, but May 10th would work. I really want to get out and shoot some macro now that I have so much time off.
haha, I wish but I graduate that day in the afternoon at 2pm so I will either be celebrating or packing all my stuff getting ready to move back to the valley.

Nice Jay.
Here's something you don't see every day in Chandler. I was coming home from a movie and spotted these guys playing.
Edit: I always shoot RGB and forget to convert to sRGB to post. Thus the washed out look.

I was wondering what kind of aircraft they would use in 1904. I believe the only thing available would be a hot air baloon.

Cool shot of Jerome... It does look old.. now you just need to scratch it up to make it look like it's been folded in someone's nightstand for the last 50 years... LOL. :)
An Emmy! Wow! That's pretty exciting....
Always something interesting to see around here. :)
CONGRATULATIONS on finishing up Ryan!! We should all get together soon... Maybe at the latter part of May or early June...?

I have a friend in Seattle that works for a local TV station and it was strange the first time to walk into their place and see one there too.. since you always think it's the big boys/girls who get them!

Ooooh....good suggestion. I'll have to work more on my aging techniques.

This would be #5... As excitting as it is, all I have to do is visit a friend of mine's home (he's in the business as well) where he has 18 now...
congrats Jay!

Hmmm... I think I just got damned with faint praise (?)
At any rate, we've won five Emmys in eight years. Pretty good batting average I'd say! ;)

How much fun are you having with the 40D?

Steve and Kristy captured some amazing shots... they are not in this gallery :(

Congrats on a fantastic month! The Emmy is huge!!!
It's nice to get the nod from your peers. The FOX broadcast of the Fiesta Bowl (the Boise State 'Statue Of Liberty' play game...) also won an Emmy but we're trying to figure out whether or not us technical types are elegible for that one too so I may have doubled up.
How much fun are you having with the 40D?
Love the 40D. It's making me actively look for things that benefit from the high FPS and it's ability to follow focus is amazing. My (ahem) older eyes appreciate the larger LCD as well.
Holds up much, much better under aggressive cropping in post, too...

Great to hear about the 2nd possible Emmy. Keeping the fingers crossed for you.
I need to think about a second body... just to have if the 5D were to die on me. Who knows if there will be a 5DII in the future. The only issue I have with the 5D is the AF tracking of moving objects/subjects really lacks. My 20D would run circles around it! If... big if...Canon would improve the AF tracking on the next gen 5d or 6d or whatever it will be... I would buy on in a second. I love the look of the photos the 5D gives... combine that with some speed... and you have the best of both worlds IMO.

Gorgeous work...
IIRC, Kristy mentioned that these were all done in open shade with bounced sunlight? The lighting is fabulous. It's warm without being too orange and it's increadibly even. No harsh shadows or blown highlights...
Bravo and Brava...
