Brian... stay away from my tree!!! :)
Another shot from this morning. What I enjoyed was working on the image for about 20 mintues... she had many stray hairs from the windy conditions... after the 20 mintues I was supposed to save the shot as a print and as a web image... I saved only the web version. :( I get to edit this one all over again. ROFL!! Time to call it a night. :)
Golden reflector used in the shot...

That shot/pose is all yours, Hatch. My shots there came out with some really ugly shadows. I guess I need to have a professional reflector holder, like you did. :)
I'm really looking forward to seeing your gelled flash shots.

I did have a seasoned professional on the reflector. :) Many thanks! Sorry to hear the shadows are there... any chance of pulling them out some with the shadow/highlight filter in PS?
The gel shots... YIKES!!! LOL Not so hot... I will send on over tomorrow. A little scary... ROFL
Come to think of it... did I hold the reflector or did Mom? LOL :D

I don't know who was holding it, to be honest. I know I was getting tired because it should have been relatively easy to see those shadows if I was paying attention.
Sorry to hear about the gel shots. I kinda figured they would have problems. Usually if you are going to use artificial light on the background, it is a good practice to use some on the subject as well. I was going to mention it to you, but I got into a conversation with Mom, and got distracted. I was really mostly interested in seeing how my background was going to look, but I needed a subject for reference. I'll know what to do better next time.

Brian, love that last shot with her hand under her chin. she totally looks like elisha cuthbert in that shot.
Scott, those are great shots. I love the first as well.
Hatch, nice job on the stray hairs. I have no patience for that kind of stuff. one reason why photojournalism seems so interesting to me is that I can leave all that crap in the photo or else ethically it's just right to doctor such a photo :-P lol

I forgot to mention the lighting setup, basically a two light setup.
Main was in a medium sized soft box camera left (iso 100 s/s 125 f11), the hairlight was a shoot thru umbrella (iso 100 ss 1/125 f16) shot at 1/125 at f14.
Should have shot the umbrella as a reflector, had some light spill on the models left shoulder.

Since the theme of the month seems to be pretty girls, I'll play:
One Light Source with a huge scrim (ie Sun behind high overcast...)
40D + 70-200 ISO 100 @ f/2.8
Minor eye sharpening and not much else. Just liked the spontaneous smile. C&C at will...
(PS...Does she look a bit pinkish/magenta to anyone else? Something in my work flow is yielding garbage looking sRGB and I can't seem to neutralize it. Adobe RGB on screen and printed is perfect... I dunno...)
[EDIT: The one on the left is the original in sRGB. The one on the right is in Adobe RBG. On my end, the Adobe RGB version matches what I see in CS3. Screw sRGB, I'm posting in Adobe RGB from now on...]

Jay,
Yes, she does look at bit red/magenta. I noted that right away, even before I read your text. Are you capturing in RAW? What colorspace do you edit in? How are you converting to SRGB?
Kristy
12th of May 2008 (Mon), 14:24
SHe has a very slight cast... but honestly, I wonder how much of that is her natural coloring... when there is too much magenta, there is an absence of yellow. And I see plenty of yellow in this image.
She looks to be a bit Irish, which naturally has more of a reddish skin coloring.... When I have a free minute, I'll pull out some of the magenta and post it to see what I think can be done to improve it... but personally, I think it's passable. :)

Okay, here goes me doing that thing I do...
Steve.. I love your image... Did a quick touch to it.. Don't be afraid to push the limits on curves and contrast when doing B&W... it really keeps them from looking muddy... I messed with it a bit and here's where I landed... Hope you don't mind. It's an excellent shot, I just wanted to give it a little kick... :)
My edit first, your original second... slight change but it works nicely.
Hope you don't mind the 2 minute fix-ups... now back to work for me... :)

And Jay's girl.. She may be slightly magenta, but hardly... Here's a quick adjustmen of selective color and pulling magenta out of the red channel and then a color balance layer adjustment as well.. bumped yellow and cyan just a teensy bit.
OF course all women like to know that we are beautiful and wrinkle free... so I did my duties to soften her facial lines just enough to keep them natural, and to keep her happy.. the camera picks up everything... things that we don't even see with our eyes.. so it's our job to minimize and beautify! :)

- Shooting Adobe RGB
- Editing Adobe RGB (CS3)
- Resize to 1024x on the longest side
- Sharpen to taste (usually USM but sometimes I'll use the Overlay method)
- Convert to sRGB (Soft Proofing shows no change on screen...matches original perfectly!)
- Save As .jpg (at roughly 280-300Kb)
- Upload to PBase (Magenta Color Cast Appears)
- Embed Link to POTN (Ditto)
I have to make humans look a real sickly green to get flesh tones right in sRGB. Like I said, however, my Camera -> Screen -> Printer chain is dead nuts on so I'm not gonna screw that up just to get .jpgs right.

Your edit looks good. I appreciate your taking the time, really! :)
One thing to bear in mind though: You're color correcting the jpg that I posted and not the RAW file. This is where my system has a fatal flaw of some kind. In Lightroom, CS3 and Bridge, her skin tones look perfectly natural. It's jpgs converted to sRGB, posted to the web and then opened in IE that look like sh*t from my end.
Everything I read says you can't do anything about it though because IE isn't color-managed so what's a photog to do? You can't go back and forth tweaking the jpg because every re-save is costs you information because of re-compression.
Maybe I'll go back and re-edit and post it again but leave in Adobe RGB. I'd rather it looked a little flat than this godawful fuscia...

I wouldn't worry about it... as long as they print the way you like... right.
It's not awaful... it's very teensy slight IMO... hardly notable, and easily attributed to her natural coloring.... It's so weird how converting things can easily knock it out of sync.
Anyway, it's a cute shot, so fresh and natural looking.... and I'm loving the bokeh on it... :)

Jay... I'm not seeing a huge difference between the color spaces... I think the image on the left has a slight...very slight red/pink tint. But...if it was a hot day...she might be a little red. I didnt' think right away that she looked like a red hot. :) The RGB shot looks flat... I know this is common with how monitors display Adobe RGB. There is a little more yellow showing as well. Between the two...the color shifts are not huge IMO. But...we all have different standards. Not to mention... my monitor isn't calibrated. :) So... take my comments for what they are worth... :)
Cool shot Steve. I like the conversion. Kristy... your version looks like it was pushed a little far... the top/left side lost skin details. But... it could be the compression of the file and the size. A fell res shot would show more. I think something in the middle would rock!
Cool water shot. I need to get back to Florida for a little vaction... how was the weather? Starting to get humid/hot?
Good times all... back to processing photos.

Most browsers are not color managed (they just ignore the profile), so posting in sRGB is the way to go, as it is relatively standardized across displays.
On top of that, you should see very little difference when converting from XX colorspace to sRGB.. Leaving it in aRBG is probably a worse idea than converting, as anything out of gamut will just be *really* screwy.
As a side note, aRGB may be 'better' than sRGB, but ProPhoto holds the crown of 'standard' color spaces to use. I *highly* recommend using it (as does Adobe, considering it's default in their new apps, forgoing even their own color space).
A few other notes - which color space you have selected in camera matters not when shooting raw - the only thing that matter is which color space you open and save the file in the converter. Also, soft proofing sRGB doesn't work like you'd think it does - just convert it and view it - that's how it will look on the web.

And I concur. I see none whatsoever.

This is what has me scratching my head. Every possible way I can view jpgs on my computer (LR, CS3, Bridge, "Filmstrip" in My Pictures, IE Preview...) all look like the original edit in CS3. The only time my stuff looks markedly different is when it's in IE coming back off the web (PBase, Embedded in POTN or uploaded to POTN.) Zenfolio is what it is simply because those files are full-res in aRGB for printing purposes.
As a side note, aRGB may be 'better' than sRGB, but ProPhoto holds the crown of 'standard' color spaces to use. I *highly* recommend using it (as does Adobe, considering it's default in their new apps, forgoing even their own color space).
Duly noted. I need to run some images through my system totally in ProPhoto and see if I can tell any difference when they come out of the printer.
A few other notes - which color space you have selected in camera matters not when shooting raw - the only thing that matter is which color space you open and save the file in the converter.
Good nugget. Can't say I knew this...
Also, soft proofing sRGB doesn't work like you'd think it does - just convert it and view it - that's how it will look on the web.
Or not... See my note above about how things look on my end in sRGB jpg pre/post web.
Thanks for weighing in. Definately one of the best things about this group is the depth of knowledge and people's willingness to share.
Much appreciated...

Color me cornfused... They look like night/day on my end. The left-hand image is really magenta/pink/oversaturated and the right-hand image looks 99.9% identical to what I see when I open the RAW in CS3. I agree it looks flatter but it looks 110% more faithful to what the light looked like when I shot it. Flat, difuse and softened by a high, thick cloud layer.

Now my next endeavor is learning how to sharpen selective areas. Thank you also for the kind offer...I'd LOVE to help out in a shoot sometime with you.

And Scott... Your desert photos are awesome! I would be afraid to get sand in my lens... amazing and beautiful!
Thank you Kristy! As I stated again I have TONS to learn about PP...but those 30 turned out very close to what I saw in person.
Sand? Well if Frank spent time in the Middle East he knows all about where it goes. EVERYWHERE. It was quite breezy after I walked in about a mile to that high perch and when it finally got light enough to see, my camera and lens were completely coated in sand but what I witnessed was worth it (even the border patrol agent that pulled up on an ATV agreed). Once I got back to town it cleaned right up no problem and no ill effects. Phew. But I will most likely have sand in my car forever!
Need to think of more places to make late night drives so I can photograph in the wee hours. I'll be more prepared this time and may try some exposures actually longer than 30 seconds. :)

Hi Jay,
It definitely looks better to me.
I noticed a similar issue when I order prints on-line. If i'm trying to pinch pennies-which I am (note, my wife is ALMOST done with her PhD...phew) Target can do a very nice low cost print option to 8x10. BUT, when ordered on-line through Shutterfly the JPG's get printed with overboosted cyan. I confirmed this by bringing in a jump drive with the very same JPG images and they come out looking very close to the original RGB's on my old school hi-res monitor. *shrug*
Theres my two pennies :).

Scott,
Thanks for the compliment, but still working on getting it better. I keep fighting the tendency to over-do the processing then over compensate and don't do quite enough. But it's getting better: here's the link that I used for photoshop Elements 4
http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/452529/converting_digital_color_photos_to.html
My change in bold:
Open your image in Photoshop Elements. Create two layers. On the top layer go to Enhance menu, click Adjust Color and select Remove Color (I set the foreground color to black then use the gradiant map layer instead). In the bottom right corner of the program in the Layers menu you will see a box. The default setting is Normal. Select "Color" from the list. You should see a dramatic change in the image. This changed how the program chooses which shade of gray to display for each color. You can now fine tune exactly how you want the image to appear. Select the bottom layer (the one that still appears in color) and go to the Enhance menu, click on Adjust Color once again and select Adjust Hue/Saturation. Move the "Hue" slider back and forth while viewing the image and watch the shift in the picture's appearance. Once you are happy with how your black and white image looks you will want to merge the layer together.
You will need to add some contrast to your image. Go to the Enhance menu, click on Adjust Lighting, and select Brightness/Contrast. Adjust the brightness and contrast sliders until you like the results. The goal is to create good clean blacks and crisp whites. Don't go overboard or you will loose detail in the highlights and the shadows. Next you can go to the Enhance Menu, click on Adjust Lighting and click on Shadows/Highlights to adjust the contrast in the midtones. The top slider labeled "Lighten Shadows" will default with the curser halfway up the slider. Move it back all the way. If you want to lighten your shadows you can try moving this slider up a few numbers to get the right look. The next slider down will darken your highlights. Be very judicious using this slider. You want good clean whites and this will make them gray. The bottom slider is labeled "Midtone Contrast". Move it right to add contrast to the images midtones. This will make a big difference in your final image.
When you are finished making these adjustments you may want to sharpen your image a bit and then save it. You now have an image that is not "muddy" and that looks like it was shot with true black and white film.

I'm not sure about the headshot - I pushed the exposure in Lightroom (it said I didn't blow out any area in the face) but not too sure if I pushed it too far. I like darker images so I'm not sure about this one.
The full body image was using a bare bulb hence the hard shadows!

I know I'm looking for something older. would love to finally have that 600cc sportbike but thanks to expensive camera equipment I won't be looking too hard. :-P prolly just want to find an older cruiser or touring bike. but yeah. we shall see if i can get one this summer. btw, what do you ride?
Budget and fitment are the most important criteria, here, Ryan. I have ridden many; my current ride is for the ergos, and it fits me like a custom made, which is why I had to have it.
After learning how to drive on Dad's BMW R50/2, I had a Honda 450 precursor to the sport bike. Later, a dual sport, a Kawasaki KLR 650, a standard/sport bike Yamaha Seca II (if you can find a clean used one, GET IT) it is better than a sport bike, because it can't go so fast as to get into trouble but has so much grunt, and it affordable, and easy to maintain! I then had love affair for 5 years with a Suzuki Bandit 1200S (ABS edition), but a bad shoulder and two surgeries sidelined and cursed that relationship, as it was just over 500 lbs, and had a heavy gas tank between the arms that killed me after 2 hours for another 4 years. I almost had to give up biking.
Then I found this, a BMW F800S:
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f389/jmmesch/Motorcycling/1.jpg
401 lbs, gas tank under seat for a super low COG, and 50-70 mpg, 800cc. A bit pricy but for me, a prescription that let me stay in biking, because there is no upper weight, so I have no shoulder pain after 6.5 hours of riding. It is the only ride like it now, but a Honda VFR is similar. The BMW is a lot less to insure and it costs about the same as a new VFR. They even make a low, and extra low version for shorter men, and women riders. I know a few that have them and love them.

Here are two more, this time in color!!!
I'm not sure about the headshot - I pushed the exposure in Lightroom (it said I didn't blow out any area in the face) but not too sure if I pushed it too far. I like darker images so I'm not sure about this one.
The full body image was using a bare bulb hence the hard shadows!
Enough rambling... here are the images :
I like the shoulder peaking out in the first and it doesn't appear you blew out anything at all :). The second shot is nice with the floor diagonal (nice angle with the signature too hehe)...and it somehow works in harmony with the symmetry of her shadow. I like them both.

Looks like you had a fun session. I agree on the highlights... they are a little bit hot, but not so much that it's a problem for me at least.
Nice work on these.. Was it a TFCD session, or some kind of workshop? I'm lost... :) (which is pretty typical of me lately.... Duh.? Huh?)
WooHoo, Think I just scored, 30D and a 135 f/2 $320 out the door at a pawn shop, Played with it for a while and all seems good, will find out when I get time to play with it. 5790 on the counter........
Geez.... that's an amazing deal! I'm going to start hanging around pawn shops if they are selling "L" lenses that cheap! LOL.... I don't even know of a Pawn Shop... You are now

that is a sweet bike! I like the boxy look to it. I got to try a klr650 but my friend who let me ride it is like 6'3 and here I am on my toes on one foot at rest on the bike :-P i don't think I talked about the bikes I had...first used a kawasaki 83 550ltd. great bike. but the gas, after the bike sitting, would just spill out of the carb and pretty much just waste my gas :-( I couldn't get it work right since then. then i got a 90 kawasaki 500ex. really nice bike. looked like a sport bike but did not have the pep. plus it was really light which wasn't that great on really windy days. felt like I was turning just to go straight down the road. :-/ but yeah, just looking for something new to ride. maybe I should just rent a harley for the weekend since I'm not old enough :-P

It's an oft repeated dream in my world:
I walk into a pawn shop and there sits a pristine 400mm f/2.8L IS (with Collar, Case, Caps and Hood...)
ME: "Hey, how much for that old "telescope?" "
OWNER: "I dunno, what do you think is a fair price?"
ME: "Well, considering the fact that Mead (Celestron, etc) has released several newer versions of it, how's $100?"
OWNER: "Sounds good to me..."
Shortly after this, I wake up in a very cold sweat...
Someday. Oh yes, someday...

Thanks, Mike. That bike and me join with a few others to travel up the twisties (as we call those curvaceous roads) to Heber, Friday (AZ 87 to 266 to almost 277), for a weekend rally of about 400 or more bikes. I am taking the XTi with two lenses, the 28-135 IS, and the 10-22 for photos. I can post a few if anyone is interested.
It does 0-60 in just under 3 seconds, stops quick with its ABS on three disks and Brembo brakes, and bends over nicely as we ease up those road to the +/- 6700 ft Heber. It is just pure fun, and I am a believer of ATGATT - all the gear, all the time; helmet, jacket, pants, gloves, boots. See ya'll.

Thanks Frank. I'm happy (and relieved) to report that all four images made it through the critique session without being shredded!! Only nit picked was a suggestion by our moderator to clone out the little bit of right headlight that is poking out behind the hood on the car shot. Can't disagree with him on this one.

Jay,
Really like #2 & 3 as well...#1 has an incredibly interesting background color and effect. Do you recall what it was?
IIRC it was simply the effect of really shallow DOF (wide open on a 24-105mm f/4L as I recall) on some foliage and a purple sign in the background. Glad you like my efforts.
Really appreciate everyone's feedback on these each month. June's theme is "Water" so stay tuned!! :D

Hatch your portrait work is fantastic! It looks like you are an old pro at it, you might have to take the "rookie" reference out of your sig!
Guerry, great shots of the kitten! amazing to see how the eyes are changing color!
Brian, your portraits of your niece are absolutely amazing! I'm guessing you have been doing this for a while?
Scott, your dune shots are great, I love the one with the moon over the dunes, color, composition, exposure, lookes like you nailed everything perfect on that one!
Steve, nice captures of Noelle! your B&W conversion looks great! I really like the color shots too! I think the head shot looks good.
Jay, nice capture! to me it looks like the photo on the left has a little boost in saturation, my monitor isn't calibrated or anything so thats all I can tell you. That smile is great, looks like you caught her in the middle of a laugh! And for your rust series, I like them all! I think there is enough headlight and fender showing on the far side of the car that it looks good without having to clone anything out. I am really liking the angle and colors of that one!
Kristy, I like the shot of Cinnamon Beach, must be nice to get up and see water for a while!
Blue-J, great shot, and nice bike! I really like the BG on that one. I sold my bike about 2 years ago, I was hearing too many bike vs. car wrecks on the radio traffic reports and i was just getting way to tense/nervous when i was on the bike to enjoy it :(

BG is short for background. I know what a squid is, I have seen more than a few down here, I wore all my gear all the time also. I was riding down 202 in July in all my gear and a guy pulled up next to me on a Gixxer 1000 in sunglasses, shorts, tanktop and flip flops and looked at me like I was crazy! Just had to shake my head at that one. Hi Gang...
Here's a question for those of you who are also on PBase...
Did you get an unusually high number of hits for Thursday May 15?
Ordinarilly I'd be thrilled to get 2700 hits in one day but the more I looked at the stats for each gallery and each photo in each gallery, they seemed to be unusually evenly distributed.
Litterally every gallery had the same number of hits as did each photo in that gallery.
It just struck me as being kinda weird that the hits were so evenly distributed. At first blush, I wondered if maybe PBase had been "hacked" or "hit bombed" in some way.
Anyone else?

Kamrie,
Nice jump shot, I like the color version you posted and tried a b&w conversion from the color version. Basically, lightened the shadow on the torso, lightend the face and hair, darkened the sand. The b&w was done with a gradient map, then channel mixer adjustment layer on the background layer, levels adjustment /mask to darken the sand,
levels adjustment/mask to lighten the hair and face, added noise, sharpen using high pass, then save for web. Probably could've toned done the right leg with another levels/mask adjustment layer.

I think the next group outting will need to be out of the valley. I'm melting! :)

Thanks steve! I appreciate the adjustment :)
And thankyou to ryan and scott too :) i am partial to the color as well.
Yeah the case was only like $30 which worried me, but it was a great find!
I agree with a trip out of the valley... coming home to 103 degree weather is a bummer :/

Cool shots Kam. I too like the color photo the best but the B&W is still nice. The underwater shots came out nice. I gave that a shot down in St Thomas and St. John's but I didn't have the patience for it. The snorkeling was really awesome though.
I heard someone mention a group ride/ photo trip. That would be cool. My bike is just collecting dust in the garage.

Here are some shots of a pair of Gila Woodpeckers nesting. I shot them from my truck windo using a Kirk window mount wiith the 40D and the 300 f4. Because of the steep angle I had to shoot at I couldn't use the view finder. I used the Live View and the programed back focus button. I don't care for the color of the sky in the one sitting on top. I'd like some CC please. What
would make them better?

Guerry,
Terrific shots! I agree with Frank...great sky color on the third shot. The top two photos sky color is normal while shooting closer to the horizon in the desert IMO.
The second one seems just ever so slightly washed out...not anything to worry about.
Nicely done!

Hey Folks,
I have to give some big thumbs up to Canoga Camera. I've dealt with them quite a bit recently, buying a 5D, and several L's, tripods, ballheads, etc. Well, 10 days ago, I bought an 85L. Yesterday, Canon starts an instant $125 rebate. I called Canoga, and they are going to reimburse me the $125. That is pretty good service, IMHO.

Great Shots! I would be hard pressed to take and get those results with a T-Pod let alone from a car window! You asked how you can do better?....IMHO "Just take MORE!"

Man, you go away for a couple of days and you get to do a lot of catching up...
Kamrie: I like where you were going with the jumping shots but I have to give a thumbs up to JmprSteve's edit. We weren't seeing your smiling face much in your B&W version.
Very cool underwater images. An alien world with which I am definately not familiar.
Guerry: Wow those are sharp images. Increadible details. Great catch in #3 with a beak full of seeds. Your birding images just keep getting better and better! As for the sky color in 1 and 2, you probably could do some tweaking with either "Selective Color" in Photoshop or with the color sliders in Lightroom (if you have either...)
Brian: Glad you had a good experience with Canoga. While I'm still kicking myself for not being just a little more patient in getting my 40D, Canoga did right by me last year when they failed to update their website regarding a Pixma 9000 rebate. They credited me the difference on that deal. They're aces in my book, too.
And finally, here's a little something I whipped up while trying to make a silk purse image out of a sow's ear photo:
(Note: Despite my earlier color rendering issues, this is correct... These were Dodge-Red cones, not safety orange...)

I decided to go back and take another crack at punching up the contrast plus a few other tricks via LR and CS3.

It's 1pm sun that is directly above and behind me.
Look at the divergent shadows being cast by the ends of the beams that make up the ramada over the entrance.
Notice also that the shadow angles match for each direction that the rain spouts are pointing:
- Down Right for the spouts pointing right
- Down Left for the spouts pointing left
Here's the original:

Kamrie, looks like Cabo was a blast, I'm liking the jumpshot! those UW pics are great too, makes me miss scuba diving :( The pic that is straight down makes me a little dizzy!
Steve, nice conversion, looks good with the shadow lightened so you can see Kamrie's face and smile!
Guerry, great shots of the Gilas! To answer your question of what would make them better, I would say PRINT THEM and hang them on the wall! I think they are awesome!
Jay, you have a great eye for photography. I wouldn't have looked at cones and thought about a shot like that! And the Santa Fe shot, Stunning. Everything about it, the crop, the light, the angles. When I saw the original I was amazed at how you picked that one part to crop into! I would have gotten a pic of the whole thing and called it good!
As for NASCAR in Japan, they have a car n the cup now, the Toyota Camry is on the track now. And if Disney is out of town and anyone wants thier bike dusted off and ridden, give me a call! I didn't want to sell mine, but did 2 years ago because i didn't want to pay for it and insurance on it.:( I would be up for some macro work this weekend, I don't think the wife has filled our schedule yet. I like to find places out in the desert where I can shoot innocent targets like melons and stuff that gives a good reaction to getting hit with a bullet. Ben Avery is about 45 mins away from me, I am close to Usery Pass (about 15 mins) and I go to Caswells for an indoor range.

That would be fun and messy! How would you set that up? Anyway, The .40 was one of the first pistols I bought and it is my carry gun (I have a CCW). I like the .40, but I would suggest trying out some of the popular calibers to see how you like the recoil of different calibers.
