no kidding. I've been watching it on my phone all week...but I won't be able to pick up my camera till friday. I hope someone else will capture some cool stuff to show on here :-D I bet Mike will be the first to have a photo up seeing as how he's been bored shooting around the house :-P

Welcome! good luck and have fun with that lens. don't forget that it's not weather sealed! :-)
soo...someone needs to set something up so we can all go shooting :-) something not so expensive :-/ there's the car show I'm going to next week but it's $20. $50 if you wanna be a baller and go VIP :-P but then ya gotta factor in parking as well which sucks but at least you will have a spot in the parking garage.
oh, and I have a freelance shoot for phoenixnewtimes.com this friday at a club in scottsdale. hopefully when i get my stuff in I will let you guys know if I actually get published or what. we shall see.

a couple of pistols (.22, .25, 9mm, .40, .45, .44), couple of rifles (.22, 7mm WSM, .30-06) and a few shotguns (mostly Mossbergs). What do you have?
it's all my dads till I can get my gun license but he has (from what I remember) a 9mm, .22 and .45 hand guns.

There are some casual open "ranges" for shooting near Sugarloaf mountain off of 87 across from Four Peaks rd. A group of my friends used to have a giant annual "shooting day" at the whitlow dam quarry. It was a great popular place to go shooting, but since most people didn't clean up their mess out there, it got shut down. I'd be up for a shooting shoot! Timing is something else, but those of you with the crazy high fps cameras could just wing it. :)
As a possibility, if anyone is interested in shooting, er photographing that is, coral reef macros and saltwater fish, I'd be game for hosting a little potn bbq some weekend. You can easily get 5 tripods around the tank at a time and there is a ton of unusual color, shape and texture to explore. I be thoroughly interested to see the things a non-reef hobbiest picks up on. This weekend and the 7-8th are no good, but otherwise, I am open.

Welcome to our little corner Jeremy! :) Always nice to add new friends to the group.

This is Arizona, no license required for anything short of automatic weapons. Unless you mean concealed carry..
Arizona keeps no records of weapons purchases, nor are they required to.
You can buy a handgun from the newspaper if you want with absolutely no oversight.
It's also legal to open carry here almost anywhere (except where signs are posted).
21 years old? Welcome to handgun ownership. That's it.

Blue skies are boring. Weather gives the best light in the world. It also gives mud for riding! And it knocks the dust down, which makes any type of following much more pleasant. :D

You can own a handgun at 18 too. You just can't buy one or buy the ammo for it. I had my first HG given to me for a graduation present at 18. :) I love Arizona. lol

It is... kinda works both ways. Coming to Arizona (or Texas, Utah) you should automatically expect someone to be carrying, whether concealed or in the open. Should (hopefully) make criminals think twice before robbing someone. :) But... it could also get out of hand if you're not careful.

Just a little input from an ex cop. I like the AZ gun laws too but know some don't. If you go ahead and get a Concel Carry permit than you will not have to worrk about harrassment from an overexcitable cop if you have the gun in your car. I know of cases where people have been cited and their gun confiscated for just having it with them in the car. They usually get it back and all is dismissed but there is still the hassel. If you have a few hours to spare and a few bucks the claass is very useful and you always pick up some great pointers.

We make a point when traveling to immediately inform (if pulled over) of the location and status of gun(s), or just put them on the dash. Handed over grip first, etc.. sometimes they don't even want to see them. Even gotten out of tickets and been complimented for being aware, safe and forward about it...
Last thing I want is to be mistakenly shot by a jumpy cop.

Same here...I was pulled over coming home from Goldfield. I leaned out my pickup window with both hands showing and informed the Officer I had 2 1893 Colt 45's, unloaded, one on each hip. I also have a non-firing Hollywood Colt 45 in my waist band as well as an 1897 12 guage shotgun leaning on the drivers seat, unloaded.
As an ex-Police Officer I knew he would appreciate that information. After 15 minutes of discussing guns, the old west and gunfights on main street, he bid me a good day and went on his way.:D..whew:o I haven't sped on that or any street since.

We are going to be shooting at the Pond at Elephant Head one day and spending some time on the trail in Madera Canyon trying to shoot some birds and what ever. We would be glad to meet up with someone down there and do some shooting if anyone is interested.

A couple days behind again all, sorry. Jay...LOVE the cone shots. The textures in combination with the colors make me want to get back on a track again soon and toss my car around some serious corners (I just might be going to the Montreal F1 race in 2 weeks-that should either help or fuel my craving for a track day). The Santa Fe shot is a TERRIFIC crop-eye opening of the patterns and makes it so much more powerful...insipring. The b/w treatment always speaks to me as I started in that medium and did it all from shooting, developing to printing.
Welcome Jeremy! Nice to see another new face...need to keep up on you all :).
I used to be a member of the South Dakota Police Combat League. Shot PPC for ~6 years (the last 3 under pressure of being the secretary/treasurer) with combat and various other matches thrown in for good handling practice. I still own handguns, most likely always will. After doing bowling pin shoots my favorite is still my G21 (.45ACP). If anyone has done one of these shoots with a 9MM or .40, they know why I love the .45 :).
Guerry-enjoy Madera Canyon...incredible place!
Group photo outings in the valley's cooler weather this weekend will work great for me! All except for early Sunday (need to be in East Mesa by 04:30 for the Monaco F1 pre-show). Anyone have ideas?

Here are a couple pics from today's "session". They showed up almost an hour late, and didn't bring any of the clothes they said they would. The boy just turned 12 months yesterday, but is bigger than most 2 year olds. He was very unhappy about having his picture taken. I only got about 3 shots of him. His sister was more cooperative, at least in the beginning. When I tried to change backdrops, she threw a 45 minute fit until she could change back into her first dress.

Snow, huh? Wierd days.... I swear it feels like February to me.

Mike you did an awesome job on the fruit shots! I like them very much. :) I've never tried shooting fruit... but yours look pretty darn good!! :)
Nice kiddo shots Brian. Beautiful eyes... the parents will love the shots for sure. Only CC I have it on the little one... try to avoid cutting off the little feet. It's nice to have them in the shot unless it's a chest/waist up shot. Otherwise, beautiful focus, color, great eye contact, etc... Your lighting looks spot on to me also.
Nice macro thread Hatch.. a perfect day for it today. :) Sigma?
Jeremy.... I don't know much about Camelbak packs, but if you take the camera, I recommend layers. I do this when I take it on the boat because I'm a freak. So camera bag goes into a black trash bag, and then tie it to keep things dry... that goes into an ice chest for an extra layer (plus when it's hot outside... I worry about the camera getting too hot... so I throw in a little coolie pack and a towel). Yeah.. I know I'm a freak, but it goes along with being a mommy. We come prepared. LOL.
TAMMIE!!! YAY! We've missed you around here! I hope you have a great time on your trip... some awesome photo opps there.. so we'll be waiting to see the results.

Ok, finally got a few shots of my wife with her horse from Saturday and thought I'd share. I'm finding equine photography generally has TONS of clutter in the background/everywhere and you can't do much about it.
I'm getting a bit more used to CS2 but have light years to go. I darkened the edges slightly, bracketed the levels around the histogram (still trying to learn curves) and gave a touch of saturation and finished with unsharp mask and saved as web image. Creativity doesn't have to end in the camera-and someday I may figure that out hehe. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
#1-taking a break and letting him cool down a bit (he's 25 now).
#2-just done riding and she was rubbing his neck (I video taped her ride then ran to get the 30D).
#3-where did mom go? My wife disappeared into the tack room for a minute-a big source of mystery :).

I got showed up on my close up/macro shots while camping this weekend by a nine yr old with a point and shoot digicam. :( I either missed focus or the background and composition were just blah. I tried taking shots of these giant fire ants that were all over camp and every one is blurry. Try and try again, right!?

We did the quick hike to the bottom and back up, that's it. It was CROWDED! And very wet and slippery. I hadn't been in several years, but apparently a rock slide took out a good portion of the steep stairway trail going to the bottom. Now the only way down is the more family-friendly path on the other side. We normally go through the cave and hike the canyon out, but there were just too many people this time.

This sounds like a really fun time and would be good for later in the summer when it is so hot no one wants to go out of the house.

Hi guys :)
Just wanted to stop by and say hello. My name is Chris and I'm 29yrs old and live in Laveen (43rd ave and Baseline area). I've been lurking on the forum for a while now. I was linked to this thread by FlyingPhotog from a recent thread of mine in the Transportation forum. The only member I have personally met on this forum is az2africa (Terry) and he was kind enough to meet up with me a while back for some pointers.
I still consider myself a n00b even though I've been shooting as a hobby for a little over 4 years now. I started off with a 300d and kit lens and last August stepped up to a 30d. I've learned a lot from this forum and I hope to continue learning. My main photo interests are cars since my friends and I are all very much into it. I also want to learn more about portrait style pics since I work in the automotive industry and wouldn't mind getting into model photography someday on the side especially since the opportunity is always there for me.
Here are a couple of my recent threads that I hope you take the time to view and provide any comments whether good or bad. I'm here to learn :)

Hi Larry...
Were the trees in this image fully "leafed?"
I ask because we had some discussion about IR at our last Desert Light Photo Group meeting. I had always asssumed that successful IR images resulted from differences in heat (ie assorbtion and reflection) but we were told by a couple of our members who dabble in IR that the quantity of vegitation in the scene makes the biggest difference.
In your shot, the grasses on the ground read well but not so much the trees which why I asked about the trees having leaves or not...
Just thought I'd toss this into the ring...

Jay,
There was very little leaf in the trees at all, this was taken in early spring, this year and the grass was in abundance but the trees appeared to be dead, but just had not leafed out at this time...does that help....my understanding is the same as you heard...the vegitation (green) is the what gives the white apperance.. I have another image using infrared..I'll see if I can find it and post..

Sweet, a car guy with a nice car. Welcome! are you going to the dubshow this saturday? I'll be there wearing my carandmodel.com t-shirt. Easiest way to find me since I'll be among plenty of other asians with large cameras there :-P
Thx! Sorry, I will not be going to the dub show. I actually was there last year with the shop I work at. American Racing gave us a decent sized booth for free. It was pretty cool but I found it a little boring. Maybe because I was technically working the whole time...The cars there are nice, but its not really my cup of tea....I'm not as much into the bling bling look with expensive cars with the biggest chrome wheels you can find, lol.
Hi Chris. Sorry, I thought you knew about this gang. If you like to shoot races then Jay (Flyingphotog) is the guy to know.He may not have mentioned it, but he was won Emmy's in this catgory.Let me know when you want to set up a car/model studio shoot and we can set something up.
Cheers' Terry
Cool, thanks Terry! I will keep that in mind. Also, I did not know that about Flyingphotog, thats amazing. Maybe I can get a few pointers some day.

Hello Everyone!
Name is Jeff. I hope I am in the right place? I just registered today.
I live in Mesa Arizona and use Canon camera and lenses.
I stumbled across this website from a post on Dpreview.com which I visit every now and then. DPreview used to be more fun a year or so ago. Someone said to check out POTN and here I am. I saw this forum about Arizona get togethers. I was wondering if you are still meeting with others i n Arizona who share Photography as their love?
If anyone cares to respond you can reach me here or at:
WolfOnDigital@aol.com.
I am near 60 and Southern in Mesa and I like to photograph Landscapes, Models (Female kind not toys lol), pets, people, and just pure creative stuff.
I hope some of you write and say hello.
Looking to talk or hook up with others in Arizona to share Photography and also to meet new friends.
Looking forward to meeting some of you,
Jeff

Welcome Jeff. I think you will find this an interesting cross section of photography buffs. Some are very talented and the rest f us try hard. There is all types of shooters here so I'm sure you'll find some like interests. I shoot a lot of birds and wildlife. Play at macro and landscapes. My wife is more artistic and does more of the still life stuff like old fences, leaves and such. Hope to meet you at a get together some day soon.

Welcome to POTN Jeff. I live where the REALLY good guys and gals live...the west side! ROFL I think Kristy and I make up the 2% which live over here... then you have about 3% out of the Phoenix area... and then 95% of the group lives WAY>>>>WAY>>>>WAY>>>> far away in the Chandler/Mesa/Tempe area.
Fun group of folks to BS with and to shoot with.
Welcome once again.

Welcome Jeff and Big C... :) Nice intro's from you both. We are a friendly group and LOTS of talent and learning going on.
I've been a little out of it lately... someday I'll catch up with myself again.. hopefully soon. Anyway, I'm on the NW side of the valley.. and believe it or not (Larry) we're pretty nice around here too .... LOL...
So I'm mostly a people photographer, I have a soft spot for babies and pregnant bellies, and any sweet little face with sparkly eyes... I've been known to get giddy over a pretty flower or a beautiful sunset... So that's pretty much the condensed version. :)
Welcome!!

You'd like me to photograph your boots in a scene with a sunset and flowers... ?? ;)
Or... are you considering posing for my fine art nude shot....? Hmmmm? We'll leave the boots off to the edge of the frame. I'll need bare feet for this one. LOL.....

Yeah.... I'm thinking mid June... when it's REALLY hot... LOL.... I'm still in a whirlwind.... story of my life I suppose.
I need to throw a FAiRY Party for Lyssie's 4th birthday... that means it has to be cute and a little overdone so I can take pretty pictures that will be spontaneous and I won't like them because they aren't "perfect".... blah blah, blah... :p

Tonto Natural Bridge is only about 10-12 miles north on hwy 87. Watch for the sign, it is a left hand turn. See my pics a few pages back. It is a gorgeous simple hike. Landscape and macro opportunities abound.

hmmmm.... I seem to remember a lighting seminar with TUTU's, Fairy wings, and a spiked collar that seemed to fit Kristy like a glove. Maybe it's time to dig in the backup drives to see if I find those...
Welcome to all, my preference is people, then people with interesting backgrounds (my version of landscape), and people holding flowers (macro). I'm over in East Mesa by Higely and Main.
