Hi All. I just talked to Scott Smith and the 2 day lighting seminar is set for the weekend of June 30th. The price and details will be up on his website in a few days.
I'll be watching his site for this!
Tammie - The 300 for portrait work was great! Those are some really fine photos, Wow!
I just needed an extra monopod to keep people from walking in front just as I pressed the shutter button.

Saturday, Adam B and I are going to shoot in Jerome, have lunch and also wander over to the Gold King Mine.
The glass in my avatar was blown in Jerome and I may have to pick up another. Might even get to shoot the glassblower - he is a really nice fellow. Y'all are welcome to join us.
The Gold King Mine is special. Lots of old vehicles and machines. But it is the owner who is really special. I hope he will let us shoot. If any of you have not been, it is a must do! This article kinda sums it up. (http://www.travelsw.com/southwest-trips/southwest-trips-arizona/goldkingmine.htm)

What time are you leaving and returning? I might be able to go, but not 100% at the moment.

We're leaving North Phoenix around 6am. I have no idea when we may return. I would like to shoot some landscapes looking east toward the Red Rocks at sunset. I guess it depends on how hot it is and how much heatstroke we can put up with.

Oh man! Jerome sounds awesome... freaky little artsy, psychic town... I would love to come, but I am soooo behind on life it's not even funny... I think I'm shooting a newborn that day anyway... which will be fun because I LOVE babies...
Have fun and I hope to see your sunsets.. I love sunsets... we'll hope for some awesome cloud formation late in the day so that your shots can be spectacular!
Happy Day!

Rats! I have other obligations on Saturday. It's been quite awhile since I've been there.
I'm going out to Boyce Thompson on Sunday. It's supposed to be in full bloom.

Hope you will be able to make it Mike.
Thanks for the nice wishes Kristy. The baby shoot sounds like fun...will have to get some lessons from the master some day. Like where do you place the bulls eye  Just kidding.
Sorry you are otherwise occupied Tammie - Boyce Thompson sounds like a blast, but I would make sure to hang out in the shade by the river - is supposed to be really hot. Mybe bring a chair, I would join you, but work gets in the way. :(
Ryan - Ohhh a DATE! With a QUEEN! LOL enjoy the queen's embrace and will catch you later!

I like this one, but not sure if I like it enough to print 20x30 or a 12x18

darn, you should have mentioned something sooner. Finals week is over here at nau and I will be heading to phx. but I might be in prescott for the summer working at a camp. I'll get random off day (one a week) so maybe for me. but yeah, just suggest something and I'm sure something will be worked out.

Okay, I'm going to be a total brat, but you asked... I like the picture and it's a nice shot.. I wouldn't print 20x30 because it isn't perfect.. but thats my opinion and we all have different views of what is perfect.. so don't be offended.. okay.
I would love it more if you shooting from a bit of a different angle and the leaves were not covering part of his body. I like the leaves in the foreground though.. they look good there, but I want to see more of this creature..
Okay.. I said it... sorry.. :( hope your not offended. But print the 12x18 because its a cool shot, and you like it.....Save the 20x30 for something
spectacular!
Now I've completely cut myself off from this group, eveyone will decide that I'm mean...... But you asked for honesty...

Kristy, I am not offended at all. I'm glad you said what you did because in a way I feel the same way about it as you do. That's the only way I can improve is for people to be honest if I ask for feedback. Thanks for letting me have it because you just helped me out. :)

I bet it prints beautifully.. I've done 20x30s on a couple of newborn/family shots and they were beautiful. I normally use WHCC, but recently sent an order in to McKenna Pro.. It should be her today, so I'm anxious to compare print quality and color... McKenna uses fuji paper which seems to have richer color than Kodak papers, but what do I know..
Did you order a linen texture on it or anything? You know what would be really cool.... check this out...... http://orders.mckennapro.com/emailNewProductMarch2007.html

Nah - it is all about how you phrase it.
Anyone can point out defects - but giving suggestions on how to make improvements is what it is tough - I am always laughing when I see some of the stuff that comes out of the camera! As long as there are suggestions on how to overcome and/or notice potential defects before the shot - that is what it is all about -
If someone says - "Your bug has soft focus" - and that is it - wrong. If you say -"Your bug seems to have soft focus, and I know how tough it is to get a shot, you could always experiment take one series at one DOF and the next series at a greater DOF and that might bring the important parts into focus." Something like that --
Well - everyone has an opinion - and this is mine -
I applaud our friend for being brave enough to ask! I further applaud Kristy for being brave enough to respond and she should be allowed at the burger fest to see the giant print!

100mm macro, 65 MPE for you with the macro twin lite and probably something longer. Besides the macro, you want me to bring anything else for you?

I want that one as well.
I narrowed it down, I will buy the 16-35, 24-70 and 100-400. I already have the 70-200 so Im good there. Would like a 300mm 2.8 but after long sleepness nights I decided to go the other route knowing I will get more use from it.
Ok I feel better now, I better leave and enjoy this day or I will never get out.

In a way the heat feels good
It feels so good that I drive in my car with the windows rolled up and the air conditioner turned off.. when the thermostat reaches about 114 and I'm sweating really good, I pretend I'm in a sauna...
Either that or I drive to the gym with it all closed up.. so by the time I get there, my muscles ar already warmed up... .LOL.. Geez.. it's getting hot.. I was enjoying the spring....

wow I missed a lot for not checking this thread daily. so yeah, I'm back in nphx now so i can make a couple more meets if there is any.
btw, why is it so hot?!? can someone turn down that sun? :-P
You Flagstaff boys need to toughen up.. It's a dry wonderful heat.. it feels good when you step outside and you skin starts to sizzle like bacon on your body... what's wrong with you... Time to hit the pool or the lake and stay in the water all day long.. And invest all your extra photography cash in to some good sunscreen so you don't turn into some dried out raisin person.
I'm sure we will all meet again and roast are butts off
Summer meeting should be indoors.. studio lighting session... Geoff is going to teach us about macro, and Ryan and I will work to teach portrait lighting... Now to see if I can borrow a baby for a few hours... or a hot girl that we can all enjoy taking pictures of... Oh and Adam can do a floral series... Anyone else???
Yah, like for the first 30 seconds after walking out of the building after spending most of the day with my butt glued to my chair trying to decifer a DOE from someone in another state who shall remain nameless (although I could name him since he isn't smart enough to learn to use a camera even though he has a Phd and will never see this). Rant is over. I feel better now.

I dont' know if the 24-70 is good for macro.. I have it and it (and love it)... but doesn't focus well very close... You'd need the magnifying converter thingy.... Plus it's heavy... well, not as heavy as your 70-200 I guess...
I think those zoo flowers I shot.. the purple one and the red one were with my 24-70.. the wild flowers were with your lens.

haha, I'm actually going to be helping out at water world these next two weeks. it should be interesting, plus I get a free summer pass woohoo!
a studio lighting session would be fun. but we'd need to find a nice and large indoor area for all of us. plus when Mike gets his new grill he can bring it along and make some burgers :-)
I sorta got volunteered to shoot a small wedding for a co-worker. Anyone interested in being a second shooter for the practice, let me know. It will be Friday June 1st at 5:30pm in Paradise Valley.
I wish I could go and help you. I have my own wedding to shoot on the 3rd, but right now I'm planning on doing another job which will only let me off one day a week.
when california drifts away maybe we will get some nice temps, oh and buy some property a little out west so you will be ready for the ocean.
hmm, good idea. maybe after I pay off all these student loans in like 10 yrs I'll be able to afford to.
Ryan, did you decide on what lens you are going to get for the wedding.
I'm thinking about getting the 17-40. it worked well for me when I shot some photos for this choir at nau. here's what I did...next time I need to make sure to shoot in raw for these paid gigs.

The 100mm is excellent, and it lets you take regular shots too, can't go wrong with this lens. The 65mm is magnificent though it is strictly a close up or macro lens. My vote and $ went for the 180mm. The 180mm gives you some extra reach when you are on a walk about while still being able to get 1:1 pix.
Thanks to Tammie and Russ, I was able to try out the 65mm and it is now on my wish list along with the twin flash.

Here is a small sample (http://azphoto.info/Jerome/) of some of todays encounters. A few more will probably hit the Album later.

Geoff,
Visited the sample pictures, looks like you had a successful day. I did a bad thing today and visited Tempe Camera for some stuff - nothing in particular just looking to see. They had - notice the past tense - a used 300 f4 L IS that was looking pretty lonely sitting on the bottom shelf so I just had to bring it home with me! Played a little with it and definitely could have used it at the zoo earlier this month. Also, just for grins I put the 2x converter with (600 f8 IS - but no auto-focus) - will take it out for some shots later (mothers day is sunday so I will be doing the family thing).

Locally, yes. They both seem to carry a good selection. B&H has a better price, but both stores have been very helpful. In my experience neither store pushes the L lense, but they make sure that you get the best lense that you can afford.

Thanks - glad you enjoyed - hope you have great success today. Was kinda fun - only little dinky black lenses - no tripods or monopods or white lenses - we were not mistaken for pros this time LOL!
Wildlife is good - was very hard for me to work on presenting the buildings, etc instead of showing you the pretty flowers and other critter pictures. Sure thought a whole lot more about composition when doing the buildings, etc! They were not moving around like the flowers and bugs!
Speaking of bugs - Adam spotted a really cool bug! My pix of it are pretty soft, so I hope he has a sharp image to share.

4 of the Radio City Rockettes were there promoting an upcoming gig.
We get swarms of bees from time to time in the spring. The queen is just resting there before moving on. It's fun to watch, at a safe distance that is. First time I've had my camera at work when a swarm is around. This one was high up in the tree.

The new lens is still new - Mother's day on Sunday so spent the day visiting my parents so didn't have time to use it. Work today and at lunch had to go and get my wrist x-rayed (biffed a landing while skydiving a week ago and the wrist isn't showing signs of improvement). Nothing broken so I guess it will take time, left wrist so I'll need to use the monopod to support the weight. btw...does any know what the IS settings 1 & 2 are all about. The lens did not come with the manual. Hopefully, I'll get sometime tomorrow at lunch to shoot something.

Hi Steve,
Sorry to hear about the wrist. Hope all is well with it.
Mode 1 is to reduce horizontal shake/vibrations...say for panning... mode 2 is both horizontal and vertical vibrations/shake.
I leave my IS lenses on 2 the majority of the time. Or, even turn them off if there is plenty of light and the shutter speeds are fast. Matter of preference I guess?
You will have to let me know how the 300 f/4 performs. I have my dreams set on the 300 2.8 IS for next years gear purchase.
Have fun with the new lens.

Nothing broken so I guess it will take time, left wrist so I'll need to use the monopod to support the weight. btw...does any know what the IS settings 1 & 2 are all about. The lens did not come with the manual. Hopefully, I'll get sometime tomorrow at lunch to shoot something.
Steve, hope your wrist starts feeling better. I know of a couple of people that leave the IS in mode 2.
I have my dreams set on the 300 2.8 IS for next years gear purchase.
Hatch
Hatch, let us know when you get home. We can schedule a get together and I'll let you give mine a test run.
For those times that the nice beastie of yours is not about, I did find this to be quite interesting (http://beachrollyusa.com/_wsn/page3.html). In addition to its normal beast like duties, with options it turns into a shaded seat (http://beachrollyusa.com/_wsn/page4.html)!!! Wonderful when you are awaiting that perfect shot!
Oh my. I actually think that contraption might have some use.

Ok. Everyone the Scott Smith lighting seminar is all set and the details are up on his website for all to see !!

It's taken some organizing, but I think it will be well worth it. He is delaying emailing the people on his waiting list to give us and the POTN crowd the first shot at it.

Looks like it would be worth it, I've never done anything like that and might consider trying it.
