Anyone need a truck? Will trade for your camera? http://phoenix.craigslist.org/nph/pho/855852708.html :)

Hatch

That's funny. I was just thinking about telling you guys about getting a new van and going to sell my Ford F150. If anyone is interested I might consider trading for some camera gear. ????

It's a 2003, Super Cab, XL with a V8 tow package and Long bed. :)

I thought it was sort of funny... but then again... maybe someone needs a truck more than a camera. Hope helps someone out there.

On another note... have a look at this video... I wonder what the shoot cost... $100k? More? http://video.on.nytimes.com/?fr_story=f2fab8687ece08e166706094178f79abd82fb3fb&scp=2&sq=t%20magazine%20cover%20spring%202007&st=cse

Did you see the Broncolor packs and heads they were using? $30-40k alone... add the MUA's/design crew/props/post production/studio/location rental/photographers fees... I would be shocked if it were less than $100K for the total production....:D

Just a bit more than a couple of umbrellas and a reflector, eh?

I didn't notice where this was shot but be it NY or LA, I find it very interesting that they chose to bring the beach indoors. I know it gives them far more control (no wind, no seagulls, no GWCs) but nothing really says the sea shore except, the sea shore.

I'm sure the final prints were outstanding but I couldn't help but think how the images shown at the end of the video all looked as if they'd get shredded here on POTN. "Your hightlights are blown" "You cut off this or that" "Why'd you let the ice cream melt?" "Nikon would have made these better..."

ROFLMAO...

Time for a little bit of a happy dance.

I just booked a really nice gig. The major retailer for motorcycle apparel and I met today. I took him out into my studio space, and showed him what I could do for them. I even showed him how you can use a studio gray seamless for multiple images from gray to black to white, to gelled. I explained why they weren't getting the results they wanted, and how to fix things. The meeting went super well. He is letting me spec out their camera room, he is going to fly me out to TX, to set up their camera room and show them how to use the gear and maintaing the gear, and have me do some product shots and show them how to do what I do with a camera. Eventually he wants me to get their photography staff up to a point where they can do this on their own.

My first destination product shoot, and seminar! :) Maybe I need to hire Marathon press. ;)

We actually did something quite similar when I was in college but it was to shoot a music video as a senior project in one of the advanced TV production classes. WIsh I had a way to rip 3/4" U-matic tape to mpeg...

Being a lowly sophmore at the time, I ended up working as a dolly grip and helped with the lighting.

Watching that NYT video, as soon as I saw them early on flying the the mondo soft boxes at camera right, I knew they were going for a sunny day look.

But cutting and sanding all that poly foam? Ugh, messy. I bet they'll be finding bits of it in that stuido for years...

It was/is interesting to see how these big productions work... I'm sure everything was shot wireless straight to the MAC/PC and then tweaked. Total control over everything. It's what the top shooters get paid to do. When your day rate starts at 10K you better be able to deliver. :) I can't imagine having to clean the studio afterwards... NO FUN!

I loved that video Frank... way cool. How exciting to be part of something like that. I wouldn't mind being the light girl or the reflector girl... or the prop girl.. just so I could watch all of the madness as it is happening. :)

Once upon a time, that's where rookies got their feet in the door.

Now everyone wants to go straight from XSi to doing magazine covers...

I couldn't even begin to count the gallons of paint I slopped on Cycs or the number of six packs of Coke I ran out to buy while trying to get a break in broadcasting.

And look at me now! Can't find a way out of it fast enough...

Who knows really...

It's kind of a phased withdrawl right now. Once I get done with this years' MLB Playoff run, I'm going to sit down with a 2009 calendar and the internet and see if I can find out the dates for as many airshows as I can that are within a 500 mile radius (ie, driveable...) and I plan on attending as many as I can. If it means being unavailable for some racing weekends next season, so be it. I won't ever get my face or my work in front of people sitting in a TV truck all day.

There's so many opportunities that I seem to miss out on simply because of profession and the fact that my work "week" is what it is.

I was all set to go to ABQ and the Balloon Fiesta next week but baseball playoffs came calling and it's not fair for me to dump all the income responsibilities on my wife. She has however, green-lighted me to "chase the dream" if I'm really so inclined...

So I remain firmly planted on the fence...

Money is tight so nothing special.

Congrats Brian. Sounds like your on your way.

Jay I think of ways to get more time for shooting all the time. As of this month I am eligible for full retirement from SS and can work as much as I want and draw retirement. Problem is it makes it harder to get upmto go to work but if I'm not working I can't buy new equipment. Not sure if it good or bad.

Hatch saw your shots on the G&N forum. Very good but everyone has already told you that. Its amazing to me how you guys get the models and all your gear to those locations. Keep up the great lighting work and we will be seeing you on a cover.

No worries about the gear... it isn't about the gear... it about you... your style and what you can do with the gear. I just listened to a pod cast of Zack Arias and this is almost exactly what he started out with. http://www.zarias.com/

actually, the 'Black Dress' is lingerie and a black scarf (hunk of material) thingy!
She just wrapped the material around her.

But it does look like a dress.

I printed the white dress image on metallic paper, that really added a little more pop to the end results.

Thanks for the comments.

Back story.... had a shoot today with Kristy.... really wanted to use the Lastolite Tri-lite I bought about a month or so ago on the kids we photographed. No such luck as we were lucky enough to get the shots we did. So... I asked Kristy if one of her girls would want to pose...this was after the shoot... she said of course they would. Well... LOL.... the oldest was out and about the the little one for the first time ever... didn't want to pose.... so... guess who decided she would lend a hand. :)

It is a little hot... but... I like the look so far from the relfectors... single light with the tri-lite placed in front of the main light to bounce fill. I still need more work with the setup... but... I see the potential. You can push the exposures a couple of stops up to give the skin a nice look... kids photos are going through this trend at the moment. It's like clam shell lighting but a little different.

Cross processed... and adjusted... again... a little hot on the forehead but... Mrs. Kristy was kind enough to pose. ... and she didn't make a silly face. :)

Many thanks... one thing I noticed ... is the catchlights can become dominate ... we were able to create almost a paw print of catchlights and it took away from the shots.... so... much to learn about the new toy... should be fun.

Welcome Jesse! We love new friends. Come and visit us often. :)
What do you love to shoot the most and do you have a gallery that you can share with us?

The clients have their images so here some of my shots from the Papago Park shoot. This is Kelsey.

Great shots Steve! I like the black outfit the best.. something about it. :)

Back story.... had a shoot today with Kristy.... Mrs. Kristy was kind enough to pose. ... and she didn't make a silly face. :)

He's lucky... I always make dumb faces for the camera... so I typically avoid it... In addition to having very little make up left after sweating from shooting in the sun and really messy hair....

I think the title of the photo should be Mr. Bear and Mrs. Messy hair.... but I love messy ponytails, so I guess it's fitting. LOL.... :) I was nice today... LOL

I like the tri-lite reflector.. a fun toy to play with... I think that women would really love shooting with it because all the light bouncing up helps to hide imperfections... and we appreciate that. ;)

I agree, the shot a little hot, and you loose a little detail in the cross process thingy, but the catchlights are nice... I would just bump down the exposure some in Raw.

Thanks Kristy, I like that shot (amazed that I took it as well).

You must like Frank better than me, cause all my pictures of you I'm either getting a dumb face or the don't you dare take my picture LOOK.

You had messy hair? looks normal to me! (man I'm going to catch it with that remark).

Ha! Ask Frank.. the first couple shots were my usual dumb face.. and then for whatever reason.. I giggled about "Mr. Bear" and smiled.. but oh those little wrinkles show up more when you smile... I need to learn a sulltry face.. I just don't have that look.... so I'll smile if you promise to keep your healing brush handy. lol...

messy hair.. me?? Never!! HA! Typical.. something about crazy curls. they just never want to stay in place for longer than an hour or so.

An yeah.. I really like that shot of Kelsey.. it's one of my faves for whatever reason. :)

Welcome Jesse.

No worries about the gear... it isn't about the gear... it about you... your style and what you can do with the gear. I just listened to a pod cast of Zack Arias and this is almost exactly what he started out with. http://www.zarias.com/

The guy is amazing!!! Have a look at www.strobist.com (http://www.strobist.com) for more one light tips.

Have fun with the gear!!!

Yeah Zack Arias is my inspiration for buying that gear! Just watched his DVDs a couple days ago. I can honestly say I learned more in 4 hours watching his DVDs than I have in 4 months trying to learn....

Hi guys... just catching up again! :)

Love the collage Frank. Turned out awesome. :) She is going to be so happy with what we came home with. I'll post up something later in the week. Frank and I work well together. I tease the children to make them smile and he shoots... then I shoot and they cry... LOL!!

Jay, something about a crying child is just priceless.... We journal all of their smiles because we love them.. but those pouty crying faces, tug at a mother's heart strings.. for all too soon they grow old and we don't see that pouty little lip any longer... ANd I'm not sure about the patience of a saint... but I am part angel... (**as she laughs an evil laugh....**)

Oh and Nice to know that you like girls with messy ponytails and cute teddy bears.. I'm going to have to analyze that one.... LOL.. I was a good sport... that end of the lens does not feel very natural for me.

Terry that oil painting is pretty neat looking. Photographed well.

Now be nice 'cause after tomorrow, you won't have me to pick on for several weeks (although I hope to be able to stay in touch and maybe even post a shot or two from our MLB travels...)

We start Tuesday in Anaheim. I'm so bummed 'cause our hotel is litteraly three blocks south of Disneyland but we won't see much of nothin' on this tour.

I hope the American League Championship series features the Angels... Then we might actually get a day off after a game 6. Still don't know if we'll get sent home for a couple of days if the Angels/Red Sox series goes short. If the Angels win it, I'm fairly sure they'll host the ALCS since they have the best record. Any way you slice it it's gonna be some long haul flying with the other cities being Tampa, Boston and either Chicago or Minneapolis. Ugh...

Loaded up my Slingshot 300AW with: an ungripped 5D, 70-200, 24-105, 17-40, 50 f/1.4, 1.4x TC, 430EX, my Sekonic meter, hoods for the zooms and a Rocket Blower. Might have to find room in my suitcase for a table-top tripod too.

Good Times .. Good Times...

Thanks to everyone who commented on the images, nice to get feedback. Kristy was a tremendous in helping the model relax and enjoy the shoot. And as always, she had some girlie poses that I was able to capture.

If my math is correct (and I doubt it is...I went to school in Detroit) we've averaged 10.03 posts per day since Terry posted first in Feb of '06...

10,000 posts in roughly 930 days...

Dunno...

Is there a max total replies that one post can receive?

I keep forgetting that all we're really doing is replying to the original post that started this little corner of the POTN world.
so it's all Terry's fault? I mean gracious ingenuity of starting this thread? :-)

At least the bear likes me unconditionally.... He never gets mad, doesn't argue, and perpetually sweet and cuddly. Love him. (and he's kinda cute)

so then wouldn't that be 10,000/930? that would be 10.75 posts per day...not good at math either but I got a handy calculator :-P az schools taught me to use those things when numbers get a bit large for me to comprehend w/o paper or calc :-P

Sarcasm is what keeps this world spinning. Most people don't realize that, but that's because they just don't get it. ;)
