Terry,
Thanks for the heads-up on the lighting seminar, I'll call Scott tomorrow.

As for the 300mm attached is my 24-105 being a model. I did this hand held (forgot to bring the monopod) - trying out the macro range. The exif is 300mm, f4, iso 200, 1/13 sec, no flash. No cropping but ps'd a little and resized for the web. There is some motion blur on the lens hood (EW-83H looks like it was stamped twice) but at 1/13 of a second I was expecting some. Tried taking some shots of some quails running around in the parking lot after work but the little buggers saw the white lens and really started running. So not much luck as they darted in and out of the shadows.
Thanks to everyone for the well wishes on the wrist.

Steve,
I told you when we met about jumping out of air-o-planes. Now it's interferring with your shots. Even with IS, 1/13 of a second handholding a 300mm! That's wonderfull.:D I think all that time in and falling out of air-o-planes has damaged your brain, let alone your wrist.;) Hope it heals fast.

Hatch, let us know when you get home. We can schedule a get together and I'll let you give mine a test run. Fantastic Tammie! Thank you for the offer. I will have to take you up on it. :) I had the pleasure of looking through one for about 2 minutes over here while shooting at the motorcycle races. GREAT LENS! I should be back in the States by the 24th of this month. I will keep checking the forum to see if any trips are taking place in June.

Thanks again.

Glad to see this is going to be a success. For a lack of a better work..I suck with the flash and lighting. Macro is one thing... shooting indoor shots of people... not easy! Well...for me that is. LOL

Looking forward to the class.

I know it will be a big help to me. I'm so clueless when it comes lighting. This will be the first photography seminar I've ever attended and the first formal anything photo related since high school. I can't wait.

Sure when I win the powerball. ;) But Tammie, I think you have everything that canon makes now.

Anyone doing anything this weekend?

I'm trying to talk Geoff in a road trip to the Arboretum up in Flagstaff Saturday, but I get the feeling he wants to play with his new AB400's. Plus we have just been invited over to a friends house for a turkey dinner. (check your email). With the cost of gas I just may bow to the pressure of staying in town this weekend.

Ha, I can think of a few things I want.

I have obligations for the next 2 Saturdays, but wouldn't mind a trip to Fagstaff the following Saturday. The last time I was at the Arboretum was a few years ago.

Hi... I've been behind... I'm doing a maternity session in Orange County tomorrow... I still am not sure about the lighting class, although I really could use the learning.. I'm trying to figure out that weekend.... see if I can swing it or not...

The Flagstaff thing sounds interesting.. I'll have to check the date and see if my hubby will babysit... what time will you head out? I've never been there, but I might be doing a birthday party for my little one that day.... she's turning 3... how fast they grow up.. Anway... I'll check back and see.... :)

Happy Weekend..... Hey Mike.. what club do you go to, and have a drink for me... actually have a shot.. I'd have a southern hooter... if I were going to have one.. :)

See ya.

You have arrived at the home of the LFSO.:D With the distance involved and hills, it is probably easier to "car pool" or meet there. Adam and I both live in the Cave Creek and 101 general area. If I drive, my vehicle is a pickup, so I could handle Adam and one small person...If Adam drives, he has a Mustang and he could include me and maybe one small person.

Hmmm. Mike and I both live in Chandler (only a few miles from each other). If he's in, we'll probably carpool. I'll have to ask Russ if he wants to go too.

Tammie/Russ was/were nice enough to lend me a 65mm to play with during one of our get togethers and included a twin flash for play time too. I lked the lens as previously expressed herein. So I pulled the trigger on both it and the flash!

I was leaning toward the Ring Flash, but since I plan on utilizing the flash with the 180mm also and the twins can cast more light, it was a no brainer.

My limited use of the lens taught me the potential importance of a focusing stage. Yup, you guessed 'er, a stage is on the way too. Thought I would start out with a Bogen - Manfrotto 454 Micro Positioning Plate. I can add a 2nd plate later if I need 4 way positioning. The RRS is much nicer, but yikes! The $ would be extreme to replace ball heads and quick release plates, etc. So for now, the Bogen stuff will suffice.

This 65mm Macro is my only non L lens purchase. I hope it does not feel shunned by the elite factions - maybe I should get it a 100mm Macro to keep it company!

Thank you Steve. The precison instruments (AKA toys!) should be here in a few days. ;)

As Kristi alludes to, have to have something to do inside when it is 115 outside!

And talking about being broke again, how is your new lens doing? Do you have any more test shots to share yet? Hope the heavy thing is not hurting your wrist.

Hope your wrist will heal up enough so you can join us in Flag on the 2nd. Any progress on the wrist?

The print came out ok, I feel it could have been better. Sad thing is that it can be expensive to keep trying. I'll frame it, then replace it with another as time goes on. Thanks for asking

Geoff,
good news - bad news about the wrist. Went and had it x-rayed and was told they couldn't see any breaks (good news) then they gave me a prescription for some anti-inflammatory drugs and the number of another doctor to check with if things aren't right with the wrist. As they said - they couldn't see any breaks but this other doctor specializes in hand/wrist injuries (the bad news - they really don't have a clue).

went to Tempe Town Lake to watch the rowers there (a mini-meet - actually a micro-meet) but I took the 300mm the first picture is the original resized for the web the second is zoomed in. The boats were about 3/4 across the lake early morning.

Hi Tammie -

Thanks for asking. The Bees are great! The 400s have more than enough power for all of my indoor anticipated uses. Adam and I secured the services of a model and spent hours taking pictures of our new naked friend!!!! Well, I guess that since there was an umbrella involved and body paint, it was not quite full nudity -- We kept moving the lights so we could get hand shadows on the hip and still let the tummy express its natural shape. It was interesting how important the shadows are to expressing the models "natural contours" . The shadow could emphasize these contours and make them look larger, or they could look smaller by more light washing them out somewhat. Will try to put up some examples tonight.

As promised, here is a small sample of Alien Bees initial serious playtime. The model has promised to be available again as the glamour shots did the ego good!

Looks like the Arb opens at 9:00 AM - From North Phx - mapquest is giving a 2 hour and 5 minute drive to 4001 S Woody Mountain Road. I would like to get there by opening. We can figure out leaving times with our fellow car poolers.

that's what mapquest says...do you really drive speed limit? It usually takes me between 1:30-1:45 to get there from north phx. and traffic there is def better now that the students have left. but yeah, give urself 2 hrs and you will get there on time.

What a lovely model! I do think the harsh light makes her look fat around the belly. The umbrella is a nice touch! Maybe we need to BBQ at Geoff's and everyone bring a gorgeous model.

She was a wonderful model ;) . As the evening progressed and the lighting changed we did see a slimming effect. In some of our shots, her abs looked very chiseled. She is very healthy, don't let our first shots fool you.

Anyway - it is a good length ride to Flag, and while not this weekend, I am looking forward to it next weekend!

Naughty kitties decided that it would be fun to punch through one of the light box windows and take the box apart - think i can salvage most of it and there is some more paper - have to get it ready for new toys arriving on Friday!

Oh it was fun! :) Thanks for asking... I posted one shot for CC in the people forum if you want to have a peek.... I'm totally into the backlight right now for some reason.. and they had a huge slider with soft pretty sheer curtains, so I went a little overboard with it.... Anyway.. I'm finishing up a baby, and then I'll start editing them.. can't wait.. the couple is really young, so it will be interesting to work on them.

Happy Day and I hope everyone is well.. I"ve been busy... :)

That was fun K! Nice backlight. Glad to see some real lighting creativity expended to good result.;) A nice pleasing shot!

This entire aspect of lighting people/things is so intense - hope y'all are going to learn lots with the upcoming lessons.

The little bit of time Adam and I spent with two bees and umbrellas makes more lights very tempting! Gotta learn more about two light sources before trying more though - and to think I did "Glamour" shots with a PS and built in flash and nailing up fabic on the wall for a background!

Thank you sir.. :) Unfortunately I can't take credit for the lighting in that one.. it's was simply what nature brings us daily.. no strobe. But I'm glad you like it just the same... I'll be posting more of this session when I work through it..

We really need to have a lighting workshop of our own... to test and play around and learn from each other.. I don't know that I'll make the class that's coming in June, but it would be so helpful... at least we can all help each other out sometime.. that would be fun. With all of our lights combined, we could make an impressive 5 light set up... hair light bg light, fill, etc... Could be a fun day.. but would leave us all wanting more lights. I have 2.. I'd like to master them before adding anything else into the mix. I've only used my second light to light the BG and not as a fill yet.. I'm afraid of it.. I need to set up a studio in my house and figure out how to use 2 lights.. anyone want to play?? I think my schedule should slow down a bit in June.....

That's sweet of you to say... but honestly, I need LOTS of help with lighting. It is my most frustrating thing right now. I have to tweak everything in RAW to get it to look right... AUUUGGHHH!! ANd pretty much everything I have done is just one light with a large soft box... I have 2 lights now and need to figure it out.. Some direction would be awesome. :)

I haven't completely written it off yet, but I'm afraid by the time I'm ready to make the committment, the class will be full... I'm playing it by ear for now... Darn it....

As Geoff said, you do get credit for the shot. All you, not the sun, clouds or even the moon takes any credit for your shot. You really do have a wonderful eye.

Get your shots in your tried and true ways, then try and get a little playtime in with your models and experiment.

As for having to tweak everything in RAW, that's just part of the dig. photog. way. As with film, you must develope your own images in your own way, or trust someone else to do so. Either a tech or a computer, the choice is always yours. You can always set your camera on the little green box and let it do all your thinking. Evil think to say, but true.

Thank you... you guys are good for my ego.... I struggle with creativity.

Yes, I looked at your and Adam's experiment... you have a very beautiful model.. Maybe I can get someone to come and pose for us.. I'd offer, but I prefer to be behind the camera instead of at the other end of the lens.

Yay! :) We should schedule something... I'll look more closely at my calendar.. We can do portrait work on each other.. Hey, how about we shoot portfolio shots for each other.... it could be fun. :) And Geoff... has that new macro stuff.. it's Geoff right?? So we can play with different mediums to see what can happen.. I have a large toy room that can double as a nice sized studio space... so... who is in, and what's a good weekend...? We'll all check our schedules... I'm far west though... so??

Geoff...your the AZphotos guy..right? I'm so confused about who is who... DUH...!

Thanks for this Adam... because I do need the ego boost.. I hate to admit that... darn it... And for the record.. you will never find me using that little green box... no way jose' ! I would like to get it pretty close straight from camera.. in my mind's eye.. that's what separates the great from the so-so... right now, I am so-so.. But I'll get there... I always shoot manual... and I've come a long way in a year... so I won't beat myself up... :)

Blah, blah, blah... talk too much.... Happy Thursday everyone! :)

Hi Kristy -

Yup - Geoff is azphotos - ;)

One of the nice things about shooting stationary digital is that you can tether the camera to a computer. (tethered notebook will join us - has burning capabilities so all can get copies) This allows you to take a shot and it can be examined right away. The next shot can have a slight light modification - look this one over and then another shot and on and on and on.... The hours slip by quickly doing this instant feedback type of shooting - thus I would only plan one activity per session - so portrait lighting one time, macro studies another - and save high speed for another session utilizing different mediums. Besides, I still need to build the flash triggers!

So we have to go west? How far West is our new studio?

I am in, though at the present time I am limited to Saturdays - Sunday is a work day. I wonder if it would be a good idea to wait until after the lighting seminar that is coming up on the 30th June and 1st of July - I am sure that some of our crew will be eager to try out new ideas they will have learned. Wonder if I will have another vacation day so I can go

2 Bees, hmmm, I thought you only had one, you must've snuck one in on us :D - I am looking forward to this. It will be fun to compare light box to umbrella, etc - and then getting into main and fill and finally into backlight and hair - this will be fun!

Your very welcome.

If you make money doing something, it's work. Sometimes work is fun and you love it. Sometimes works su*ks and you hate it. Sometimes it's just so-so and your bored with it. But you just stick it out, waiting for the better days to wonder along. We are all slaves to the dollar.

Learning new things always helps when your struggling with creativity. Learning to shoot a flower, might help or give you an idea when shooting a big belly.

Sometimes it help just to stop and get away from it a little while, not long mind you, just a little while. Take a couple days away and read a good book or three, something lite and fun, something not work related either.

Remember we all go though this.

Smile, for it's a wonderful day.:D

Know the perfect spot for the sigmonster - the Corkscrew Swamp, just north of Ft Meyers FL. Outstanding at migration time. More info here. (http://www.corkscrew.audubon.org/)

So when Adam wins the Powerball he can take all of us!

Must have that BBQ now:lol:

A BBQ sounds great, I personally don't have the room living in the apt life, other wise I'd gladly offer. And I don't like for my neighbors to see the goods if you know what I mean.

Whoo whee - Mike picked up the 300 and the 100! Wow! I feel your pain man. I too am trying to be good. Repeat after me - i am trying to be good - I am trying to be good!

I keep hearing a 400mm IS calling to me and then it becomes a duo because the 500mm is telling me I don't need no stinkin 2.8 f stop and then the 600mm chimes in to make it a trio and that I should quite farting around because the 600mm knows I really want her - whew! Then of course the 5D has to make it a quartet and tells me that I have to get her too! Thank goodness for indecision and too many choices!

Well, you saw how hard it was to talk me into giving you some Duck Butt!

Before I get serious, though, my wooden floor has a little too much give. I am going to have to get a slab of marble to hold the tripod and shooting table, or glue together a couple of sheets of 3/4" plywood. There is too much give in the floor to maintane critical focus.
