View Full Version : Theft insurance away from home

Can anyone recommend a good insurance company to insure my 10D and lenses? Im more concerned about getting it nicked away from home. I could include it under the home insurance but I wondered if there were better alternatives.

Any advice and types of policies available to me would be greatly appreciated.

I use Photoguard ( http://www.photoguard.co.uk/ ). Although I've never yet needed to make a claim, their policies are fairly thorough and the premiums are OK. Also, it is extremely quick & easy to add or amend insured items when required.

I would thoroughly recommend http://www.goldenvalleyinsurance.co.uk/
through experience with a 70-200 f2.8 which I dropped whilst changing lenses and the filter smashed and marked the front element and "ovalised" the filter mount thread, I requested a quote off Nathan @ Mifsud for a new lens and within 5 working days I had a cheque in my hand for the full amount off Golden Valley! I have no affiliation with this company, I am just very impressed with their service and have over £12000 worth of gear insured with them!

thanks people. I think taking out separate insurance is better than putting it on the household.

Both the above companies include accidental damage, is there any other companies that offer theft only? the reason is that I have a fully comprehensive policy that includes accidental damage. The only thing it doesnt include is theft.

I am in Virginia, USA
I use State Farm myself for my photo equipment, seemed reasonable at the time. It is listed as professional equipment, so it is covered when I travel.

As to whether or not I am a professional, that can be debated. But for insurance purposes I am.

[Trivia: to date, I have made no money directly off my photography, but I have made money off the products I have shot - in the meantime, I have fun taking pictures of models]
