This guys wasn't the best magician I have ever seen but really made up for it with personality and audience interaction. I enjoyed his show.

It sure was fun.

What do you think of the photos?

The first would have benefited from a little fill flash ... the bright background and his left hand in the sunshine overbalance his face ... faces are always the focal point. I might also have cropped it a little tighter. In the second image background is distracting because it is too well focused ... and fill flash might have helped it, too. I think both images tell the story well, but with "slight of hand" still images aren't the optimum medium.

my first responce was, why is such an old man doing this...lol
I would try and convey that story.
Does he do it for the fun? Capture smiles and such
For the money, shoot him counting
Is he tired of doing it, wiping sweat off....

Just my 2Cents :-)

I like #2 BTW ;-)

danedel, I am almost as old as he is ... we all do it for the same reasons we always did it ... we are all 19 years old inside our heads! I started shooting world class performers at 59 ... you know, people like James Brown, B.B. King, Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn, Tom Jones, Clay Walker, Al Green, Seal, Merle Haggard ... folks like that ... in fact last night I shot Brooks & Dunn. I am 19 inside and 60 outside. Let me know what you think about the "old man" in these pictures in 40 years. :-)

Ok, I tried my best with photoshop to get a blurred background. Used another photo of mine with a shorter DOF to get an idea of what I needed.

What do you think?

Only make the 'transition' smoother: Now the OoF erea begins right behind his feet. It should be more gradual. Apart from that: quite good shopping!
