Found an obliging barklouse on the underside of an arum lilly leaf- made quite a good "model". All shots taken at 3.4:1 and cropped. Bug body length 1.8mm. Unless my eyes are deceiving me you can see the plant cells in some shots.

Thanks Bama- not much else about here at the moment with the cold wind- Have had to get used to shooting bugs this small- actually took the leaf this was on inside and took pics of it on the coffee table in the living room- at least it was warm there :)- I did put it back after :)

I liked the first shot- looks like it's eyeing up that bit of dirt on the leaf :)

Thanks Gordon,
I might be wrong but I think the white bits are patterning on the outside of the abdomen.

I notice it has three spots on its head similar to a Wasp ...

those being the simple eyes that only record light and dark without detail - believed to help them know which way they are up when flying!

I'll have to try blindfolding them and see if they fly upside-down :)

If you can blindfold those guys, I'd be severely impressed. Great shots of a willing model. Great work.:D :D :D

Lovely shots. You must really be a diehard to be out in the biting cold, looking for something that small to photograph. That must explain your talent!

Oh they look excellent! All of the shots are winners. I really like the first image, the posture of bark louse is really interesting, looked like it was trying to clean itself and you caught it in mid action! Nice!

No diehard here- just severe macroholicism. This was a quick look outside at the underside of some leaves near the front door- spot some bugs- cut the leaf off- take it back inside for some photography in the warm. Shooting above 3:1 I need to be able to rest the end of the lens on a solid surface. The fun bit is trying to find the bug through the lens. I did put the cut leaves with bugs back where I got them from :) when I finished, although I must admit there is a leaf hopper flying around our living room somewhere now :)

Looking through my old files - had this labelled Blackfly but is it one of your Barklouses?

What set-up do you use at the coffee table. Is it identical to the one outdoors.
