These are excellent Spencer... great stuff! Might be tempted to lose #3 simply because there are only backs involved... but otherwise peachy.
Shame that Thurrock lost yet again! They'll be heading for a relegation battle at this rate.
Also a shame you didn't do the job for the NLP as the pics in there today were distinctly 'average'. They offered me the game last Monday, but I had to turn 'em down because I was already booked for Grays vs Dagenham.
Keep up the good work! I'm sure Neil will be well chuffed with these.

Thanks gavin, results are getting better as the lights improving. I really, really need to get a better lens (and more talent!) lol...
Its a shame the rocks game was off as there isnt many more i can cover this season due to other commitments, hopefully next saturdays game will be on and they reschedule this one for a time i can make.
I had a call from Kelly on wednesday about covering the game but when i explained i was already covering
east thurrock and all i could possibly offer them was half a game (if neil was in agreement) she said she wanted the whole game covered. The guy that was there was from Brighton! (didnt get his name) an older guy, long hair, shooting on Nikon with 70-200 f2.8 and 300 f2.8
The thing with the NLP is that I didnt realise their deadlines were quite so strict, The guy who was there went off at half time and wired the pictures in, I could of got them to them by about 6.30pm but i dont have the equipment to wire them in. The other photographer said they need the pictures by about 5pm??!
I was going to ring kelly that night and say i was at the game after all and offer her some pictures but there was no need after all.
I saw grays drew 1-1, should be a good replay tuesday night, are you going?

Yep, the fact that it's no longer dark by 3.30pm certainly helps matters!
As for the NLP - yep, the deadlines are tight and you'll generally need to wire during the game or immediately after it. I'd generally send 3 or 4 pics in at half-time and couple more at the end of the game.
I didn't recognise the name of the tog that covered the Thurrock match - and there was a new name covering Canvey as well. Looks like the NLP recruitment drive is working... Brighton to Thurrock though? Hmmm...
Just sorted my pass for Tuesday night's game - hopefully it'll be a better match than Saturday's which was chaotic to say the least. Are you going over there? There should still be time to get the pics in Thursday's Gazette (just) - so perhaps Neil would be interested? Also, I didn't see a Gazette tog at the New Rec on Saturday which was a bit odd given that it was a Quarter-Final?

Looks like the NLP is out for a while then lol, Id love to go to the grays game but I dont know if ill be able to sort it, Ill have a word with neil.
I dont know if there was anyone there on saturday, I was going to offer but i know its a little harder getting me into grays games so i went for thurrock instead. Ill email him now although i feel a bit inadequate with my small lens and all you guys there with you big ones ;) lol
The guy at the thurrock game said he knew kelly from when she worked with him on a paper in brighton so maybe she was calling in a favour?

Good series Spencer. I was thinking about giving sports photography a try too. What sort of focal length do you tend to use on average?

Hi, I use a 70-300 4 - 5.6, far from ideal but funds are tight and this was cheap! lol. Thanks for the comments, give sports a go, its great fun! Your 70-200 should be fine.

I wouldn't worry about the gear Spencer, there were several togs there on Saturday will all kinds of equipment - one was shooting with that stuff called 'film' ;) The important thing is that the light was good so faster glass wasn't 'essential'.
If Neil needs pics from Saturday - he knows my e-mail address  Obviously I can't approach him for 'ethical' reasons ;)
Certainly sounds like Kelly was calling a favour in... that's what comes from booking 3 games in South Essex all on the same day!

Film! whats that? I know! its that clear plastic stuff you get over the screen of a brand new digital SLR right? Yeah, the light was good on saturday but obviously the replay wont be as good for my basic equipment... i should still get something though... ill wait and see what neil says, if he comes back to me do you want me to mention that you have pics from saturday?

Yep, that must be the kind of film he was talking about... although he seemed to be putting it inside the camera... most odd?
Obviously I can't approach Neil as the Gazette's the Recorder's competition (and comes out a day earlier). Also, he probably won't want to use pics from Saturday AND Tuesday... so don't put yourself out of a job on my account! So only mention it to him if you think it's appropriate... cheers for offering. Having said all this, we'll probably discover that the guy shooting film was, in fact, working for the Gazette  and has a nice pic of Grays goal (which I don't  )

Ooh, talking of the NLP, I got a few of their columnist Stuart Hammonds having rings run around him. It was just a shame that our 42 year old legend Adie Harris didn't come off the bench to embarrass him, he'd have had to put something in his column about that!

Stuart will have to change his pic in the NLP for one of your action shots I reckon ;)
